Beginning and Freshman Composition

Blogging in the Blogosphere
English 52, 60, 100

FORMAT:
When you blog, in the Title, write your first and last name as you would as if you are turning in a paper to me. Then you do not have to write my name because I know you are in my class. Write what English class you are in whether it is English 52, 60, 100 and what College.

For example, one would write:

Yue Hayes
English 52
Cerritos College
Post #1

Homelessness
Font size
In addition, for the title, pick the topic of discussion, grammar/organization, content, current events, pop culture or literature as a TITLE that we have discussed in class. Write the posts like this: write #1 Post or #2 Post or Post #50, so I can easily keep track of them and how many you write.

Of course, you are welcome to write more than several posts, and in doing so is another form of participation and does count in the participation grade. Perhaps, in class, you may not participate all that much but in the realm of the blogosphere, you can from the comfort of your own home,
  • reflect on the day's class discussion or offer up an insight that you found particularly interesting, etc., etc.

  • How does it change the way you think or thought before on the subject?

  • What actions might you take in the future? Anything is open to interpretation.

Of course, I need not go on and on about being respectful towards your peers' opinions and beliefs. If you disagree with another student's views be discreet about it: Do not say so and so is completely wrong because of this and that. Instead, say, I disagree with so and so and here are the reasons why I do. Go after their evidence and support and do not, I repeat do not attack someone else personally. This is supposed to be a forum for everyone to share their ideas and views.

*I will enforce the blogosphere by either deleting your hard work, making an example out of you here in the realm of the blogosphere or in class* . . .

Tonight was such an amazing night! I went to the Clippers game and was able to sit in a suite. It was so exciting. Such a great game as well. Unfortunatly we lost 105 to Denver 106 but it was great!! I spent about four hours today writing my essay, can you believe that? Four hours!! But I want this to be a good one. :) Anyways, I hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving tomorrow with your family or friends or whoever!

By the way from downtown LA to the Brookhurst exit took 30 minutes. And my dad was driving, he drives like a slow poke!!

Happy Thanksgiving all, and have fun, but be safe tomorrow and Black Friday!!

Isaias,

That thought has been in my head for years,

What is fact and what's an opinion.

Nothing, is really something.

Is like air, its not tangible, yet we know its there.

Like you said

"We humans are unique to understand, and question our environment.
Allowing us to change what is to come. Manipulate."

Is those characteristics that separatesus from other animals. Faith, Feelings, "common sense"

We often base so called facts on the majority's faith or believes. We tend to generalize what the majority says. however is that always right? So hence my question, how do we really prove what's a fact and what is an opinion

What is nothing and what's something. Is air something even though we cannot touch it or grab it?

Here's some of my theory on black holes:

We have been told to believe that light cannot escape black holes, but how do we really know this? For this to happen, the black holes suction would have to be stronger and faster than light itself. So is there something faster than the speed of light?
I believe that light does escape black holes, but not as light, but as energy that comes from lights. As some of us, energy cannot be destroyed nor created. But however it can be transferrable. At the speed light travels, which is very fast, it carries momentum, I believe when light hits a black hole it goes from being light, to becoming another form of matter. Something we are yet to find out, hence my research. Until we decide to venture into one, we cannot conclude what a black hole truly has, and its made out of.

My research is its early stages.

Any sharing of ideas is welcome:]

Happy turkey day!

I just wanted to wish everyone a happy thanksgiving! I had a pretty good day...unfortunantly i can not say the same for my friend Tyler...this morning his dad was hit by a car, and is not doing so well. He is critical, yet stable condition, but the doctors have to wait for the swelling to go down on his brain before they can do anything. It is really sad, and i really dont know what to say. It really made me think about my blessings, and all i have to be thankful for. It would be greatly appriciated if you kept Tyler and his family in your thoughts and prayers!

I do have some good news though, Andi woke up!! She came out of coma on wednesday morning for a good three hours. Although she is still fading in and out of coma, the doctors are positive, and say they have high hopes for her. The cancer is still not so good, but things are looking better now that she is awake, and just in time for thanksgiving too!!

all rite also...

here's how my thanksgiving went...

SUCKED MAJOOOOR HARDCORE but i'm okay

MORNING: found out there's no school on thnskgiving. YES i'm an idiot, but to lie: I LOVE SCHOOL haha.

Nick should know and erika too

Bad stuff:
realizing i don't have school i could of gone with my parents to san diego for this but too late. So i texted my close friend and asked to hang. And major complex emotional issues starts happening.

The hard part about this that she's my closet friend and we haven't hung for wat? more than 3 months already, i always keep waiting and i even skipped my friday classes for her bd, which she was still working and i hung out there while she was working.

all rite, but not to get emotional, we fought.

I kept saying we never hung and she kept bringing up she wanted/has to spend time with the family. More like WANT TO becuz she mentioned she never got to.

wat mamkes it so ironic is that that for hte past 2-3 years, her parents especially her mom treats her like shiz. And now she's got a freaken dumb person living in her house and she still wants to still cook for them. In additon, she said "you should be happy for me, i'm finally cooking for my family"

that is the most stupidest thing i ever heard. ALl the times i had bear with her, this has got to the most hurting thing i ever heard. In the end, her family had been a$$holes, and she still put them before me. i thought i had a close friend... but that is lame.

Worst of all is i'm doing my dam poem about her -___-...

On the toher hand, half of me thinks what i did was wrong to argue about it?

Was it wrong??

I think it's really sad that a lot of times, people just assume the worst in people.

I have been getting criticized for believing in people and trusting people too much. I know in many circumstances, I might just be seen as a naive person, but is that really a bad thing?

Should I be scared of the possibility that if I give people money, they would use it on things like alcohol and drugs, or should I believe that people are going to use it for what they really need?

Who am I hurting, if I don't give the money in the long run? Who I could or might be able to help is much more important than the embarassment I might receive from those who use the money for alcohol or other things. Isn't the risk worth taking? Why do people think that we're stupid or wasting time/money if we try to help someone else? I really hate that.

Isaias
Wow, you think like me. One question and thought leads to another thought and question and over and over again, only to reach nothing but more questions. It's really difficult to post something like this and even come to an end, right? Your post didn't even end, it was more of a "to be continued."

Lately I've been thinking more and more about the whole balance and truth, but it's very difficult to find people that I can share this with. Most people don't care to talk about depp subjects like these, and it's sometimes even unappreciated/unwelcomed (Maybe that's why I end up keeping all these things in my head and it starts hurting).

NOTHING is infinite, so SOMETHING is finite right? (opposite)
If nothing if infinite, then isn't everything finite? I think that things like time and space are infinite. For example, I think that everything exists within a cycle. I think that this cycle just keeps going. Within this cycle, life ends and begins, over and over again.

We humans are unique to understand, and question our environment.
Allowing us to change what is to come. Manipulate.

I think that being able to understand is a burden at times. Imagine if humans didn't exist, I'm sure that the planet earth would be way healthier.
We want to understand what is too big, too complicated, too magnificent for us to understand. We don't know when to stop.

Sometimes we need to understand that the power of nature is far greater than our ability to manipulate or understand.

Go beyond what you think is common sense, for common sense is just a state of "truth" everyone believes in, at that point in time.
Like the thing that happened with Brandon, I can't believe how important "common sense" is to people. Honestly, isn't common sense basically a proof of how adapted you are to the society's values at the time? How intelligent are you, really, when you have to start thinking according to how others want you to think? I love it that you brought this up, because it's been bothering me for some time now. Gosh, I feel less crazy knowing that someone else thinks like me. Haha.

And another thing: Maybe people are not supposed to understand how God came to be, because the being itself is again, too powerful for us to understand. Things like beginning and end might not apply to Him, because of all that He is. He is and always will be, here, there, everywhere. That in itself is too much for our mind to handle, isn't it?

And Isaias, we share a lot in common in terms of having tons of questions and having tons of different thoughts. Notice how I'm answering your questions with more questions, haha. I'm not at all trying to answer your Q's, I'm only sharing my thoughts with you.

Wow, I've rambled on and now i'm hoping I didn't forget to mention or say anything. I'm kind of tired, haha.. Well, look at the time.

Everyone
I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving (And sorry to those who didn't, like Tri). I got to cook, so I was a happy girl.

Yay for Black Friday!

we, as humans, have to understand that there are things that we will simply never know.

never.

yet we are attracted to these ideas.

we ask and ask and like you said, it becomes a burden, one that will be one of th emany reminders that tells us, we are not common animals anymore, we evolved and became master hunters, master explorers, and now, we are becoming master destroyers.

These are some sample letters:

((Use them as a guide. Only))

From an inner city middle school student, told to me a couple years later, after the fact of me being his teacher, I cleaned up the grammar obviously:

Dear Mr. Hsiao

Well, there is a lot of things you did not know about me. I love my parents to death, and they never do me wrong. See you knew I was in a gang. I do drugs, smoked cigarettes, and I have bad grades in English. I was steering in the wrong direction. The way you taught and had people come in and talk about their lives an dhow they straightened up—It got to me!

I live in New York now with my grandparents. I made an agreement with my dad. I told him what my life was like outside the house and everything, and how I wanted to change it. We agreed on me moving in with my grandparents in New York. For 14 years, all I ever did was trouble my parents and give them a hard time.

I did not want to put my family into any more pain. My sister is a screw up. She is 24 heading nowhere, and every night she makes my parents cry becausee they do not deserve a troublemaker like that. She is really irresponsible and still hangs out with the same old same old crowd. It saddens me that there is a ten year age difference and even her little brother realizes how messed up things are before she even does.

This decision I made, it made my parents proud as hell. I am starting to go to church every Sunday with my grandparents, and I will definitely not fall into the same crowd. You helped me grow up really fast, Mr. Hsiao. I am not a 14 year old anymore. I have matured so much and so thankful that your way of teaching and caring about us really opened up my eyes.

John Hsiao said...

From a high school student, I hear from time to time that he is doing special things. He wants to major in film in Chapman.

Dear Mr. Hsiao

I would like to thank you for being my English Teacher for the second semester. To tell you the truth, when I first heard we were getting a new teacher, I was a bit aggravated. The reason why being because every single year, that I have had high school English, I have had a new teacher!

I felt I was being cheated out of a good education because half of the time they did not know what they were doiong. You were totally the opposite of that. You really do love English unlike those other phonies.

After having you as my teacher, I really started to change my mind and say, “Hey, this guy is not bad at all.” Yes, of course, you gave us a lot to do, but really you were getting us ready for life. I guess I passed one more level in the game of life. I took on what you threw at us and me, and I earned what I needed to pass.

Mr. Hsiao, I would really like to tell you now that I never really was a success in English. Basically, my overall grade in English in the past 3 years was a 70%. Teachers never really understood me, and how I expressed myself. Teachers would not show me what I was doing wrong in my writing: they wanted me to guess. How is someone supposed to learn something if they do not know what they did wrong? You told us time and again that we needed to go deeper and give more details and focus on the thesis. Honestly, all the others’ comments were total BS.

I would have to say English this year was the most enjoyable. I was able to tell my life story and find things out about myself that I never knew. I was able to understand my grandfather more due to the suffering paper you made us write. I never knew how much my grandfather suffered before writing this paper. He would always tell me to finish my food because others were suffering and do not have any. I never really understood until he told me he was one of those hungry for food in Hungary. He even had to kill his horse for food and melt snow for water even when it was laced with gunpowder and blood during the war.

Mr. Hsiao, you have inspired me to further extend my English Education, and I want to minor in Poetry. I would also like to say I have enjoyed your poems as well, especially the one about your brother. I will keep in touch and ask questions when needed.

Thank you Mr. Hsiao

John Hsiao said...

From a university student, with an ESL background, I worked intensively and fiercely with her writing to pass the WPE, last I heard, she is doing quite well.

Dear Mr. Hsiao

It definitely has been an exciting and memorable semester for me. My horizons expanded through many of your lectures and words of wisdom. I find it needless to write how much I learned or improved for you must already know. It has been reare to see an educator that possesses such kindness, compassion, and enthusiasm as yourself. For everything that you did, one might see it as constant nagging but only because you care so much.

Only four months have gone by, but I can see the dramatic changes in my writing under your guidance. The love that I have for writing gradually deepens as you said it is a way in which I can express myself. All that I just mentioned above comes down to one word—inspire, only I do not explicitly state so. I may or may not see you in school next year as you have informed us, but I hope I will anyway.

It was a journey that I will never forget. I wish you the best in everything you do from now on and forever.

Regards,

P.S.

May the light of your knowledge reach those minds in the dark and heart of compassion touch those in the infinite wasteland.

John Hsiao said...

From one of the students this past semester, she touches on many aspects of the class:

Dear Mr. Hsiao

Over the last, several weeks I have learn many great things about me, life, other people, and other places. In addition, of course I learn many helpful tips on how to write a good essay, grammar, and sentences structure.
As you know it has been many years since I been in school. I have not used any of my learning skills anywhere for the last four years. Four years ago is when I stop working to take care of my daughter. Being a mom is great.
Also, being around many young students makes me think about how I am going to raise my two little ones. In class, there are many different personalities, so I wonder how my kids would be. To tell you the true, I think some of the students are just playing a role when they are in class. I do not believe what many say in regards to the discussions we have.
On the other hand, maybe that is just my imagination going wild. I do enjoy the conversations and I get much great information that is helpful. It is nice to see the class so united; however, at times I do not feel like a part of the class. Maybe that is my fault for not making conversation with others. The reason is that they are much younger than I am.
I am in no place to tell. How am I going to take advice or take seriously if I know they are different out of class? I myself am different out of class. I am quiet but not with people I know. I have learned from my classmate that you cannot judge a person by its cover. That was proven the first day of class, when we all introduced ourselves.
I know at times people have to change whom they are in order to fit in with the crowd. I did get to meet and talk to many students in class, but many times, I would just like to observe. I am always afraid someone is not going to like me or think I say a stupid thing, which is why I rather stay quiet.
The important thing is that I learn many great tools in how to improve my writing. That is something I will always have with me. Especially the fragments and run-on sentences, I hope I did not do them in this letter! Thank you for placing such emphasis on grammar and how important it is for us. I want to master them for the future because it really is necessary.
All the stories we read where great. I enjoyed Only Daughter by Sandra Cisneros I know that in many Mexican families that is how fathers react to having a daughter. Mother Tongue by Amy Tan, I can relate to this story. Even though my English is not perfect, when I speak English around my mother, it makes me uncomfortable because she does not understand it. I also like A Penny Saved Is a Penny Spent by Eve Conant, and What is Poverty? by Jo Goodwin Parker. They talked about life and how we ought to be fortunate for the life that we have and look out for the future. We could end up like this new generation and like Jo Goodwin Parker.
Professor Hsiao you have been the only instructor I had that has care so much for the class. I like how you teach the class. You are tough on us for a reason. You give us tough love to make us be the best we can possibly be. After you explain how you treat the other classes, I understood why you were so strict. Thank you.
I enjoyed all the field trips, especially the museums. It was great of you to go to all the trouble of taking us to all the wonderful places. I though field trips never happened in colleges. Being a part of the blog is an interesting thing for me. It takes me away from my problems and lets me focus on something else.
I know I did not write much, which was only because I am the kind of person that does not like to share her feelings with others.

Thank you very much for being our instructor this past semester.

Sincerely,

BOLSA CHICA WETLANDS

Pacific Coast Highway between Seapoint & Warner Ave.
Size: 300 acres with 1.5 mile trail
Parking Hours: 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Restrictions: No dogs, bicycles or horses

Huntington Beach - Bordered on one side by Pacific Coast Highway and oil fields and houses on the other, Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve wetlands is a 300 acre coastal sanctuary for wildlife and migratory birds. There's a wooden bridge crossing over a tidal inlet and a 1.5 mile loop trail providing spectacular wildlife viewing.

Over 8,000 years ago, Native American Indians lived on bluffs overlooking these wetlands Much has changed since then. In the more recent past, Southern California once counted 53,000 acres of wetland areas. It is down to 13,000 acres now.

Progress and growth has taken its toll to the tune of a 91% loss of wetlands in California, more than any other state. Many migratory birds are dependent on the remaining wetlands, with 20% of North America's migratory birds using the Pacific Flyway. Birds wintering in California's wetlands have declined from 60 million to 2 million, largely because of destruction of this habitat.

New progress was recently made through the construction and opening of a $100 million bridge overpass to allow an inlet from the Pacific Ocean to be built and opened to the wetlands, allowing for the first time in over 100 years, the ocean waters to enter the wetlands located on the east side of Pacific Coast Highway. With the hopes of refreshing and restoring an integral and significant habitat key to this Pacific flyway stopover for endangered birds, the experiment was financed by the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, in trade for expansion and acquisition of additional coastal land for port use.

For the Pacific flyway as a whole, there has been some improvement over the past ten years, partly because of the end of a multi-year drought in the northern breeding areas for these birds, but also because of a successful effort to restore California wetlands.

Over the past decade, there has been a 30% decline in the commercial landings of fish that depend on wetlands in California. There was once a very active and productive fishing industry in Los Angeles and Orange counties, but today it is almost non-existent. This is largely due to the loss of most of our coastal wetlands.

When entering the Bolsa Chica wetlands in Huntington Beach, look right (south) for two sand islands where California Least Terns and Snowy Plovers nest. Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve offers free parking and admission. Bikes, horses and dogs are not permitted on the trail.

163 pairs of Endangered Belding's Savannah Sparrows live, breed and nest at Bolsa Chica. Look for rare Light-footed Clapper Rails which have recently been spotted. On any day, you might see Great Blue Herons, Snowy Egrets, White and Brown Pelicans, Avocets and Black-necked Stilts, to name a few.

In the fall and winter seasons, Lesser Scaups, Red-Breasted Mergansers, Ruddy Ducks and Common Loons come to visit. Tours are given on Saturday mornings, through several groups.

Call the Amigos de Bolsa Chica (714) 840-1575 for tour information. A new trend in tourism involves participatory activities and active donations.

If this is your thing, you can help clean up the Wetlands and make local friends on your visit to Huntington Beach.

Saturday clean ups are sponsored by the Bolsa Chica Conservancy and donations are readily accepted (714) 846-1114.

Directions to Bolsa Chica Wetlands

Getting to the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve wetlands area traveling from the North, exit San Diego Freeway (405), at Seal Beach Boulevard and travel west toward the beach. Take a left on Pacific Coast Highway and drive south past Warner Avenue intersection. Turn left at the next stoplight into the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve. Traveling north toward Huntington Beach on the San Diego Freeway (405), exit Golden West Street. Drive west to Pacific Coast Highway and turn right where Golden West ends. Drive two stoplights and turn right into the parking lot of the Reserve at the second light (past Seapoint). If you see Warner Avenue intersection, you have gone too far.

Note: Additional information about the Bolsa Chica restoration can be obtained at the project web site: http://bolsachica.fws.gov/Index.htm

Do we have to cite the sources that we find with facts, and use them as the detail sentences?

UGH!!!!!!!!!! I WAS SOOOOOO MAD YESTERDAY. MY BOYFRIEND OF 2 YEARS JUST MOVED TO T.J. FOR A COUPLE OF MONTHS AND I WENT TO SEE HIM YESTERDAY WITH MY DAD WHO BTW HASNT LIKED HIM FOR ABOUT A YEAR AND A HALF SO IT WAS FINALLY GOING TO BE SOME "BONDING" BETWEEN THEM. I WAS SOO EXCITED, THAT MY RETARDED ASS FORGOT THE PASSPORTS AT HOME. SO THERE I AM ON ONE SIDE OF THE BORDER AND THERES MY BOYFRIEND ON THE OTHER SIDE. I CANT GO OVER CAUSE I HAVE A CACTUS ON MY FOREHEAD AND IT WOULD BE HARD TO TRY AND COME BACK WITH JUST MY LICENSE. SO I THOUGHT HE COULD COME OVER THOUGH WE HAD ALREADY DECIDED ON A RESTAURANT IN TECATE A NEARBY CITY TO T.J. BAD THING ABOUT MY GREAT IDEA WAS THAT THE LINE WAS REALLY LONG TO CROSS (ABOUT 2 HOURS) AND IF HE WOULD WALK ACROSS HE HAD NOWHERE TO LEAVE HIS CAR. SO HE WAS DISSAPOINTED AND I WAS JUST PISSED. I TRIED TO BE MAD AT HIM BUT DEEP DOWN I KNEW IT WAS MY FAULT. ANYWAY *TEAR TEAR* THERES ALWAYS NEXT WEEK WHEN HE COMES DOWN.

ALRIGHTY THATS MY UNFORTUNATE TALE FOR TODAY

steroids are bad for you, so i am assuming that no girls don't find that attractive, im not attacking you personally but why do you use steroids? especially since you play football and all i find that kinda cheating yourself

Orlando said...

Lei:

Girls don't really have a way of knowing if a guy is on steroids or not.

That being said, girls are physically attracted to guys with nice bodies. Looks should only be to get them near you. What is between you ears will prove to be what they are really attracted to. You could look like Brad Pitt, but if you have no substance, you won’t hold their interest. I have friends that look like models on the cover of fitness magazines but can’t carry a conversation to save their lives. They are able to attract girls, but can't seem to close the deal.
If attracting girls is what you are after, first make sure you look good with your shirt on. Second work on keeping them interested in you. Have nice, fun conversations with them. Make a woman laugh and before you know it, they’ll be attracted to you. The last thing you should worry about is what you look like without your shirt. By the time you get to that point, she is already interested in you and won’t care if you’re not ripped. Trust me, she’s probably just as worried about her body as you are. Plus, if she is only attracted to you because of your looks, what does that say about her.

Big things seem small:
Does any one sit at their desk and stare into "space"? Do you know anyone that does? Well tonight, once the sun goes down and if our weather permits, you might just want to take a look at the moon. Not only will you see a sliver of moon crest but Jupiter and Venus aswell. The 3 of them will triangulate and you should see something similar to a frown or a sad face. Its a very rare occasion that this can be seen and will hopefully last for a few days. Though, try not to miss tonight because it will be at its brightest, considering we have adequate visibility. Just thought I'd share to thoughs who care about enormous things that go unnoticed.

To those who watch the stockmarket...wow. It ended hard today. Dow -679.95 Nasdaq: -137.50. For those that do not watch the stock market - know that isn't a great sign for the season. As many of you shop through your holidays try to squeeze all you can out of that Zinc penny. Allocate specific money for the holiday season and stick to that budget. Set yourself up to buffer for a few recoiling months of recsession.

This also bring me to another terrible story. And my heart goes out to the family and friends of Jdimytai Damour who was trampled by anxious walmart shoppers on friday. Such animals people are/can be. Just to purchase some merchandise at the cost of pushing someone down...and NOT STOP?? My condolences. **Everyone needs to becareful. Whether it be walking across the street to your car, or in at the mall, its all dangerous. Be aware of your surroundings and if someone needs help, lend a hand, 'tis a season of giving...

Thats all for now.

A poem I wrote:

I’m walking away
I have nothing more to say
You act as if you are so great
When I know my own fate
I need to be strong
I know I won’t be wrong
Getting away from you
I will no longer be so blue
All you do is cause hurt
When you see a girl and flirt
Do you not see the damage you’ve done
You have won
I’m no longer here
There will be no more tears
I am walking away
I have nothing more to say

This is just something...I dont know. One of my poems.

We've Been Had

What of today?
tomorrow will we swear we spent it well?
I wonder if things will be different at 3p.m.
than yesterday.

what of dreams?
i could dream all day.
But then I'd be no closer to them.
what did I dream last night?

what of money?
george does not look like he's evil.
And green IS my favorite color.
it will come and go.

and now beliefs.
I believe i can't change everyone's opinion.
There is a heaven and hell here on earth:
saturdays and war.

and now war.
the problem with words is they can start a war.
Almost seems silly to think they can stop one.
Try to root for the good guys. the sooner they win.
the sooner its over.

finally, tootsie pops:
no one cares how many licks it takes to get to the center,
because we all eat blow-pops. and i dont think that myth about
getting a star on the wrapper is true.
We've been had.

Other poem:

when I wake up today
will I be Ghandi or Timothy McVeigh?
in answering I delay,
to buy the time to survey,
my mind for some fitting cliche.

But here comes the morning array,
birds and sunlight-a brand new day,
and the promises over candlelight are offered to the fray,
the future I planned is given away.

children see a chance to play,
familiar friends, gather the soiree,
its mealtime at the all-you-can-eat buffet,
but nightfall comes and they go home to lay.

The statue at home voices dismay:
"you rise in the morning everyday,
to find yourself in disarray.
Why then do you go out and play,
when you face such perilous assay?"

The child remembers the things he threw away:
"i should have stored them in a safe cache.
But before I go to bed today,
ill draft a promise to portray
the way ill act and obey."

All I can do is pray,
that throught the night and gray,
my draft does not decay,
and rises with me when I wake up today.

Exactly, you are on the right track.

What I am trying to state is the Law Of Opposites.

There is always an opposite to something. [up/down,evil/good,solid/liquid, matter/anti-matter the list goes on...]

So if the opposite law is true, then there has always been an opposite for NOTHING. That being our Universe-matter.

You are on the right track Talia.
Keep asking questions.....

Wow, this is the first time ima say this but, i'm gonna miss English. I never had an english class that i looked toward to until now and with the semester nearly done, i'm really gonna miss everyone. Some people on the blog too... i guess. Just kidding. I miss you all guys. This class was like a place where creativity and inner thinking actually came to life or was processed; i don't know if any other english class is going to be like this :(. I guess this will be something that helps realize more of where we go in life or other english classes.

I wanna give a shout out to some people ^_^, because i won't see them on thursday.

Nick: yeah i know you were kidding, but idk, i guess i was angry that day and it mixed in so yeah. You're really a good guy, there's this vibe that you put out when things seem kinda tense, but yeah, u're cool and ima miss that vibe. Seeing you and Nam, it gave me a little bit of reason to be confident when giving speeches so yeah, thanks.

Courtney: yeaaah... ima missed your uhh... idk if it's innocence or kindness but it's just this personality u have that is really cool. I just wanna say that i thought a girl with ur personality and smokes was kind of hot so yeah ;). And if you ever have a fire that your man can't put out,(heart or pants) here's my number: 7148295357.

Samantha: ummm... Nice meeting you haha. you're really out there.

Alyssa: not sure if that's how u spell it... i actually wanted to talk to you. You somewhat reminded me of my friend, but i guess our paths never crossed so i thought i say hi now. I thought you were pretty hot too, i guess it's becuz u don't look like u act like the other girls. But idk, i'm judging a book by it's cover so yeah.

I think that's about it, the rest, well i didn't really talk to a lot but i'll miss you guys too. Hopefully you can give this shout to them Mr.Hsaio.

As for tuesday:

Nick (Good Dad, Bad Mom): Ima miss you man. You're really down with it. Even though i think i was annoyed sometimes, u're still pretty cool man. Gave me confidence in myself.

Lisa: Gawd dam, you smile and laugh waaaaay too much, but it's cute and ima miss you too ^_^

Nam: Idk if i'll ever meet some other true asians man, but you rock. Wish i could of talked to you more though, you know a lot and i really wanted to share ideas, but yeah...

Kevin: I'll miss the fact that you always look so freaken calm no matter what. Idk if ti's the eyes or if u're really doing it, but i envy it man. haha

Danny:uhh yeah, you're cool man, really smooth.

Erika Martinez: I'm reallly gonna miss you yo. You were the first person that talked to me ^_^. Dude, if u just didn't get back with that ex, you could of stayed at Cypress, haha. I'm kdding. You gotta go where you gotta go. Good luck with the guys becuz i know ur bubbliness will lure them like fish. Maybe you should just stop acting all innocent, idk. But yeah, take care... and are u ever gonna bring the phone???

Mr. Hsaio: .... u got my letter right? haha So i don't think i need to say much =]. Just kdding, you're really great teacher mr.hsaio. Idk any other proffesor that makes his students blog, but it got a lot of us closer together and that is the most amazing thing i ever seen. Like i said, you shine this light on me and i think i wanna take up English major, but idk, we'll see. Depends if my computer or influcing skills is better. But yeah, as a man, i'll say "Good job mr.hsaio, it was fun being here"

I'll still be on this blog, but i'll really miss everyone...

Guest Speakers
The guest speakers were interesting. It is inspriring to see people willing to help others in need of desperate help. It opened my eyes, it has showed me how blessed I am and how much I take things for granted. When the speaker from Isaiah House said, "serve people as you were serving Jesus," really got to me. If people started to treat each other with that belief, this world would be a better place. I also enjoyed the other class being there because their teacher was banging.

I KNOW THAT WATER CAN DROWN ME BUT I DIDNT HAVE STAY UNDER WATER FOR AN HOUR TO FIGURE THAT OUT. I KNOW THAT THE KKK WOULD PISS ME OFF, SO WHEN I SEE THEM ON TV I CHANGE THE CHANNEL. SO IF SUMONE WOULD OFFENED ME IN ANYWAY I WOULDNT LISTEN TO IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Some of the poem touches my heart, and i was teared. although, i am a man, but i really can't hold that shed of tears sometimes when comes to emotional topic. Overall, those poems are fabulous and well written. Most of you are poet, and you guys just don't know that. So final is near, I guess every one is some what excited. Keep up the good work and study hard. Even we have a month off from school, don't let our writing and what we have learned in this class slip away. Enjoy the christmas holiday and be safe!

Thanks MR. Hsiao-
We were blessed to have all those speakers in our house.they all shared their love for life as well as their best experiences. I was very much impressed when our guess speaker mentioned that she had translated the bible or First testament so that others could have a chance to read and to know more about God in their own native language. That touched my heart. They all have something very special, we all perceived their joy and happiness for life. John F. Kennedy once said,” To know how to do something well is to enjoy it”. They all sure enjoyed what they do for others.

Thanks,

Where are the rest of the Cerritos College students in terms of discussing the guest speakers?

Amador,

have contributed to the discussion.

Remember that the Guest Speakers have discussed the contributions of their lives: they took a break from their normal work day or took time off to discuss what was/is important in life.

Comment please because what I will do is send them these comments in their entirety to thank them.

It will be a Thank you Card of sorts blogwise.

SHE WAS INSPIRING AND HAD SUCH A YOUTHFUL SPIRIT ABOUT HER. "MR. DOC/ ISAIAH HOUSE GUY" WAS PRETTY KOO. I WOULD LOVE TO DO WHAT HE DOES WHILE STUDYING TO BE A DOCTOR AS WELL. This week was relaxing, fun, and inspiring. All four of the guest speakers were inspiring, very successful and hero's of all different types. Samanta is a strong woman and she is totally kick ass. Excuse my language, but had to say it. Her job is very intersting and sounds like a lot of fun. It is soo cool that she wants to go futher in her career and explore much more out in her field. Brian and Ander are hero's for helping out children and adults overcome the diffulties in life and trying to make a diference. I am not sure but I think the other speaker, was Kathy. Kathy was so inspiring to me because she is a true child of God and a strong woman. I have met some missonarys but not as great as Kathy, beause she does not talk about how great she is as a missonary. She talks how she has brought God in people's life and have learned from them as well. I loved her love story about her and her husband. It was sooooo CUTE!! Kathy has actually helped me go forward with my relationship with God, to repair it between me and Him. So I have learned a lot in one week and thats really good.

I liked how all of the guest speakers all said that the all hoav gotten served. It is actually really amazing that theses people do these kind of things, it really points out how different we all are.

The speaker from the Isaiah house was very funny. Even though he said that the guy who he became friends with died and he made it sound like a joke. I held in the laugh. sorry.

Mr. Hsiao, you are really a great teacher/professor/friend--(in a way).
I love how you teach and hopefully i will take you from English 100.

And to my class mates....I know almost everything that comes out of my mouth might be funny, i don't understand how, but i am serious half of the time...Just pointing that out because i don't consider myself a funny person.

My final paper, what not to say about it. It will probably suck. I wish i had more time to work on it(I mean really, i never had time to work on it.) But i will see what i can pull off. if all goes well i will do good. =]

Wow it been a while seen I been here. It has been a hard month for me. I have been going to throw a lot of thing lately that I haven’t had time for anything. I can’t sleep, I get headache, my eyes hurts and can’t focus right. I try to stay optimistic about everything, so I try not to showing how I feel and pretend everything is ok. But there is time were I can’t even take it anymore and I just want to cry but I can’t. I am scary to talk to my friend, family and even to my best friend. I try to go out just not to think about it. It works but just few hours then it would hit me again. Then meeting Samantha and Ms. Kathy it was really wow! I see why you are friends with them Mr. Hsiao. I am really speechless with Kathy, she is an amazing person it was really nice talking to her. I had this warm feeling with her that all I wanted was to give her a hug for some reason. She had opened my eyes again to the world; it made me feel like I want to help again. During my junior year I use to go to Down Town LA and help out the homeless and during Christmas I use to go to the elderly home and sing Christmas carol to them. Hopefully this year I could do it again.
Well as for my paper, I couldn’t interview the person that say would help me. So I have to come up with something else.

I am grateful for the opportunity to get to know our guest speakers last week. Brian helped up revisit Kidworks, and it was humbling. He made a brave move to relocate himself to an unfamiliar place, and reach out to a bunch of kids that he did not know. Kidworks is a great facility set to make a difference in the lives of the children of Santa Ana. It is admirable that Brian would offer himself to relate to those who are in need of a friend such as himself. Samantha is a very interesting woman. She spoke to us as if everyone was on the same level. It was encouraging that she shared her journeys to get to where she it today. It gave me hope that even though I have started off slow and at a junior college, I can succeed in a satisfying career. The woman who gave seventeen years of her life to change lives in the Philippines was inspiring. Seventeen years away from your home to live in remote locations with people whom you cannot really communicate with it wonderful. You can see the sincerity in her eyes as she reminisced about her experience. She is a really amazing person. It was nice to see Ander again and have him speak to those who weren’t able to visit the Isaiah House. The Isaiah House continues to send a chill down my spine, and in a good way. It is truly amazing that there are people who are willing to give so much of themselves to hundreds of strangers. All of the guest speakers have made a big impact on the world. Even if it is just one or two star fishes at a time, they are making those lives that much better. Thank you for what you do, and taking the time to share what you do with us!

but i wanted to say some stuff about the speakers.

they were all so different, but yet very alike. The all came from different places and they all do different things, yet all of them became close to GOD and all of them thought they where going to serve others but they all got served. all of them where great speakers. Samantha was hilarious and so cute!! Bryan was so funny and sincere. Ander was very frank and sweet. Cathy made me want to hug her for a cool minute, and what she did out of the purity in her heart is admirable! and the 19 year old cutie was awesome! he said things that not every teenager would even think of. and he meant every word of it. He made me feel as though i can be just as great as him by caring about things and most importantly being with GOD.
Thats all for now.
before i get in trouble =]

 Indent the second and following lines 5 spaces (or one half inch).
 If no author is given, start with the title.
 Abbreviate the names of all months except May, June, and July.
 If the paging of a magazine or newspaper article is continued elswhere in the issue, include only the first page followed by a plus sign (ex. 25+.).
 If the encyclopedia does not arrange its articles alphabetically, treat the encyclopedia article as if it were a book article. Specific volume and page numbers are cited in the text, not in the list of references.
 Gale Reference Book: cite the original source being reprinted as shown under Book, Journal Article, Newspaper or Magazine Article, etc. The example shows a Magazine Article. Then include the citation information for the reference book.
 Websites: include the title of the web page, the name of the entire web site, the organization that posted it (this may be the same as the name of the website). Also include the full date the page was created or last updated (day, month, year if available) and the date you looked at it.
 Internet Magazine Articles: Include:
• The full date of the article (day, month, year if available) and the date you looked at it;
o If you are citing a journal instead of a magazine, include the volume (and issue number) and date as shown under the Journal Style above.
• As for page numbers, different databases will provide different information. Include the range of pages (ex. 25-28.); or the starting page followed by a hyphen, a blank space, and a period (ex. 64- .); or the total number of pages or paragraphs (ex. 12 pp. or 33 pars.). If no page information is given, then leave it out.
• The name of the database (underlined) and the company that created it.
• The library or other organization (and its location) that provided you with access to the database.
• If the web address (URL) of the article is very long, you only need to include the URL of the database's home page.

Hey Eng 52 (mon/wed)
It’s been a fast semester this year. It hasn’t felt like we have been together for 5 months. I am really going to miss everyone in class! I have gotten to know some pretty amazing people and hopefully gained new ongoing friendships! This class came at just the right time for me. I was beginning to feel alone and separated from good people, even though I was doing the job of being a daughter. The blog was a therapeutic outlet for me to get some things off of my mind, and help others who may be experiencing something similar. Professor Hsiao is truly a different professor/teacher than I have ever come across in the past. I feel that I have learned more valuable information about English, Myself, and Life in general than I have in the past. I hope to see most of you in English 100 or in other classes! Good luck in your futures! Good Luck on the final!!!

Example of a correct quotation

in MLA format with

author, title, and page number:

TITLE

According to _Holocaust the Events and Their Impact on Real people_

AUTHOR

by Angela Gluck Wood, she states,

QUOTE

“Einsatzgruppen adapted vans by sealing off the front compartment and piping exhaust fumes into the back compartment. They loaded their victims into the back and drove them to a trench or grave” (81).

PAGE NUMBER

They all run together.

I just double spaced to to show the emphasis.

John Hsiao said...

The quote should run 3/4 of the way down on a body paragraph.

There should be a couple of sentences intro-ing it or prepping it to introduce the quote

and then the quote itself

and thereafter a couple of sentences follow to tell me why you chose the said quote.

*****************************************

Here is an example of a body paragraph with the quote 3/4 of the way down.

The root causes of such mass genocide really is at the heart of the HOlocaust. How could there have been such hate in Germany back where people wanted other people to die? How could people be so judge other people so quickly because of the way they looked? Why were there adults teaching their children to discriminate against other children, and parents telling their children it is okay to tease and hurt someone that does not look like them? Did people really believe that killing another human because someone said it was okay? The atrocities speak in the numbers themselves. Unspeakable numbers of Jews were killed in such fashion as to make everyone take notice after the fact. According to ushmm.org, “The Holocaust was the systematic, bureaucratic, state-sponsored persecution and murder of approximately six million Jews by the Nazi regime and its collaborators. ‘Holocaust’ is a word of Greek origin meaning ‘sacrifice by fire’”(http://www.ushmm.org/wlc/article.php?lang=en&ModuleId=10005143). Obviously, Hitler thought he and all Germans were superior to the Jewish people. When Hitler came into power during the early 1930’s he blamed the Jewish people for the countries downfall after the First World War. Hitler felt as if the loss of the war was the Jews fault because the majority of the Jews were bankers. Due to the fact that Germany had an economic hardship after the war Hitler used the Jews as a scapegoat. The word scapegoat has a great deal to do with the reason Jews were chosen to be the victims of genocide. According to Merriam-Webster.com the definition of scapegoat is, “one that bears the blame for others” (http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/scapegoat). Hitler felt as if using the Jews as a scapegoat people would start to become more interested in everything he had to say. Hitler hoped that people would start to notice him for becoming the leader of Germany. He used the Jews as his scapegoat, so he could rise to power. Not only did Hitler say that Jews were the reason for the economy downfall, but he also mentioned that Jews were a constant threat to the German country--the funny thing is that if something is repeated enough no matter the message it becomes fact. The Jews were the downfall of Germany, and they had to be dealt with or so Hitler made his people believe.

******************************************

Notice that this example uses a lot of questions in the beginning even as follow ups to the topic sentence(s) and then follows with a quote and there are sentences that explain why the quotes is/are being used.

If you use the quotes and the following sentence before and after the said quote(s), then the paragraphs become halfway done. You have spent 5 to 6 sentences already.

Does that makes sense?

I WISH YOU ALL A MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

And heres a little storie for Everyone...

"…. Wiwichu a merry crismas, wiwichu a merry crismas, wiwichu a merry crismas, and a japy niu yirrrr !!!"

Soy el primero en felicitarte
las Navidades!!

I enjoyed getting to know all of you in class, and some of you even outside of class (Danny, Cianna). I hope that we could all keep somewhat in touch!

Thom and Josh, and the rest of you!! If you guys are ever in a bowling-kinda mood... CALL ME!! Haha.

I will be looking forward to seeing many of you in English 110, because I found out that many of us will be taking it with Mr. Hsiao.

Thank you for such a great semester, it was a very great year, from ending high school to the beginning of community college. I'm glad that this was my first class, it is a great start to the new chapter of my life. I found out so many things about myself you have no idea.

BLOGGERS!
All of you from Cypress and Cerritos... Man, you guys are awesome. I haven't even seen many of you in person, but I know that you all have a great heart. I enjoyed our many philosophical conversations as well as the political conversations. Some of you had great influence on my new thought process and my outlook on the world.

It's so great to have been able to accomplish all of this in a semester, and I really think that a lot of what I learned in this class was from the blogging experience. There are just some things that can't be learned in class, and this blog was able to fill in the gaps.

You all rock! I hope that one day, we'll all be able to hang out. :]

Thank you all for such a great semester! <3

Its in its name. I mean the title of the piece. Its says so much just in the few words that makes up the title....
...Luis (Fish) I also believe it is speaking in regards of how one views their own mind.
It is a very complex but yet very moving.

Question on Separation Encounter Return:
How come the writer uses so much religion into this story of journey?

-I think it is great he uses religion and God in the story, because God is the true hero. God is showing people the right path to go, if they wish.

THIS MIGHT SHOCK YOU:

BUT I'M PISSED OFF THAT THE PRESIDENT GOT SHOES THROWN AT HIM... IN THERE CULTURE SHOWING SOME THE BOTTOM OF YOUR SHOE IS A INSULT, BUT THROWING SHOES ARE JUST A FLAT OUT F*** YOU TO ALL OF US. THE PRES. IS THE SPOKES MAN FOR THE ENTIRE UNTIED STATES AND THEY DIDNT JUST THROW A SHOE AT HIM, THEY THREW IT AT ALL OF US!!!
PEOPLE WHERE ACTUALLY LAUGHING AT THE FACT THE SHOE GOT THROWN. I COULDNT BELIVE THAT!!! I MEAN YEA BUSH ISNT THE SHARPEST TOOL IN THE SHED BUT HES OUR PRESIDENT DAMN IT!!! IF YOU HATE BUSH THATS FINE, BUT REMEBER WE VOTED HIM INTO OFFICE, AND REMEBER HOW READY FOR WAR ALL OF AMERICA WAS RIGHT AFTER SEPT. 11? I REMEBER THAT!!!! I HEARD PEOPLE FROM THE FAR RIGHT AND FAR LEFT COMPLAIN ABOUT THE GOVERNMENT BUT IF IT WASNT A OPEN CAPITALIST GOVERNMENT YOU WOULDNT BE ABLE TO SAY ANYTHING BAD ABOUT GOVERMENT. SO IF U TRULY BELIVE IN THE COMMUNIST VIEW OR WHATEVER THAN WHY LIVE IN AMERICA? THATS WHAT MAKES AMERICA GREAT, ANYONE CAN MAKE A FUTURE NO MATTER WHAT THEY ARE GIVEN TO START WITH. NOW PEOPLE IN COMMUNIST COUNRTYS WILL NEVER BE ABLE TO SPEAK UP AGAINST THE GOVERNMENT, SO IF U HATE OUR SYSTEM PRETEND UR IN A COMMUNIST REGIEME AND SHUT UP!!! BITE YOUR TOUNGE IF U WANNA TALK S*** ABOUT AMERICA!! IF U DIDNT REALLY LOVE AMERICA DEEP DOWN INSIDE YOU WOULDNT BE TAKING OUR MONEY AND GOING TO OUR SCHOOLS!!!

(THIS AINT NO SHOT AT PEOPLE OR THIER POLITICAL VIEWS ITS JUST I'M FED UP WITH THE APATHY OF AMERICANS TOWARDS AMERICA)
