Beginning and Freshman Composition

Blogging in the Blogosphere
English 52, 60, 100

FORMAT:
When you blog, in the Title, write your first and last name as you would as if you are turning in a paper to me. Then you do not have to write my name because I know you are in my class. Write what English class you are in whether it is English 52, 60, 100 and what College.

For example, one would write:

Yue Hayes
English 52
Cerritos College
Post #1

Homelessness
Font size
In addition, for the title, pick the topic of discussion, grammar/organization, content, current events, pop culture or literature as a TITLE that we have discussed in class. Write the posts like this: write #1 Post or #2 Post or Post #50, so I can easily keep track of them and how many you write.

Of course, you are welcome to write more than several posts, and in doing so is another form of participation and does count in the participation grade. Perhaps, in class, you may not participate all that much but in the realm of the blogosphere, you can from the comfort of your own home,
  • reflect on the day's class discussion or offer up an insight that you found particularly interesting, etc., etc.

  • How does it change the way you think or thought before on the subject?

  • What actions might you take in the future? Anything is open to interpretation.

Of course, I need not go on and on about being respectful towards your peers' opinions and beliefs. If you disagree with another student's views be discreet about it: Do not say so and so is completely wrong because of this and that. Instead, say, I disagree with so and so and here are the reasons why I do. Go after their evidence and support and do not, I repeat do not attack someone else personally. This is supposed to be a forum for everyone to share their ideas and views.

*I will enforce the blogosphere by either deleting your hard work, making an example out of you here in the realm of the blogosphere or in class* . . .

This has been an extraordinary semester. I know I really did not talk much, but I enjoyed being in Mr. Hsiaos class. I gained a lot of knowledge within this class. I learned many new things that i did not know in the past and I am very happy that I did. I had some great classmates that I got to chat with during the semester. Eva, Daniellle, Talia, Araceli, anthony, and others that I forgot to mention, it was really nice to have met you all :)

Although some of the stories read throughout the semester seemed confusing to me, luckily Mr. Hsiao was there to the rescue. He explained the story and tried to make us understand the message behind it. You really are a great teacher, your not mean, you are just strict. You only put us on the spot because you love us right?? I would know, I went through that maaannny times.

Farewell everybody and good luck on your finals im gonna study some more. BYE! i will miss you all! :)

It has been a really great semester in this class. I had a lot of fun with mr.H, you made the class fun. Even though the class is tough i still enjoyed it very much. I am going to miss comming to this class and getting to hear what everyone has to stay and their stories. I would consider taking Mr.H other english class in the future but for next semester i will not be able to. Thank you for all your hard work you are a great professor. :)

OK SO YESTERDAY I WAS FINISHING THE LAST TOUCHES ON MY ESSAY.I WAS WRITING MY CONCLUSION WHEN I MISSED SPELLED A WORD, I HIT THE BACK SPACE BUTTON AND IT WASNT WORKING SO I STARTED GETTING MAD!!! LOL AS I SCROLLED UP TO SEE THE REST OF MY PAPER I NOTICED THAT ALL MY WORK WAS GONE.... EVERY FREAKING WORD TURNED INTO SYMBOLS AND I STARTED TRIPPING OUT. ISAIAS WASNT HOME AT THE TIME SO I HAD TO FIGURE IT OUT ON MY OWN. I REOPENED THE FILE THE CLOSED THE ONE THAT HAD MESSED UP. SO I WAS GOOD..... OR SO I THOUGHT..... I CONTINUED WORKING ON MY CONCLUSION AND AGAIN THE SAME THING HAPPEN.... SO I DID THE SAME THING CLOSE AND REOPEN BUT THIS TIME A POP UP CAME UP SAYING THAT MY COMPUTER NEEDED MORE MEMORY AND IT COULDNT SAVE AND STUFF... SO I WAS F*^%&$ I RESTARTED THE COMPUTER AND IT SAID MY FILE GOT TRANSFERRED OR CORRUPT! SO BEING THE GIRL THAT I AM I STARTED CRYING LIKE THERE WAS NO TOMORROW, I COULDNT FIND MY PAPER ANYWHERE. I TEXTED ISAIAS TELLING HIM MY PROBLEM AND HE WAS BLAMING ME FOR IT! SO I STARTED CRYING MORE LOL IT WAS AROUND 11:00 AT NIGHT AND I DECIDED TO CALL MY FRIEND CESAR.... HE IS LIKE OUR PERSONAL GEEK SQUAD LOL SO HE WAS TRYING TO TELL ME BY THE PHONE, WHAT TO DO. AND I WAS STILL CRYING.... AT THIS POINT ISAIAS GETS HOME AND WE COULDNT UNDERSTAND WHAT CESAR WANTED US TO DO.... SO ISAIAS HAD TO TAKE THE LAPTOP TO HIS HOUSE TO FIX IT.... HE LEFT ABOUT 12:00AM AND I STAYED HOME CRYING SOME MORE..... IT WAS 3 AM WHEN ISAIAS TEXTED ME THAT THEY COULDNT RECOVER MY PAPER.... SO I STARTED CRYING MORE LOL I LOST HOPE AND I DIDNT KNOW WHAT I WAS GONNA DO I CRIED MYSELF TO SLEEP... ISAIAS GOT HOME AT ABOUT 5 IN THE MORNING AND HE TOLD ME THAT THEY RECOVERED ABOUT 90% OF MY ESSAY. I WAS RELEAVED....THE ONLY PROBLEM WAS THAT ALL THE PARAGRAPHS GOT MIXED UP WITH EACHOTER AND I LOST MY CONCLUSION.... SO THERE I WAS TODAY ALL MORNING TRYING TO MAKE MY ESSAY LOOK NORMAL AND STUDY FOR MY FINAL FOR ENGLISH AND ANTHROPOLOGY.... IT WAS JUST NOT A GOOD DAY AT ALL. AND ISAIAS WAS LAUGHING AT ME SAYING THAT THESE THINGS ONLY HAPPEN TO ME.... LOL AND I THINK THEY DO... THIS WAS SO UNFAIR.... BUT ITS OK NOW ITS OVER WITH.....SO SORRY MR.H IF THE ESSAY IS A LITTLE COOKY.. WELL NOW IM HOME ENJOYING A NICE COLD BEER.........ITS ALL GOOD NOW...

"Good bye" is such a terrible expression...

Seems so cold to flow from our vocal chords. Really, I just want to smash my computer when the AOL mail messenger in its automated voice trembles the speaker. (Who uses aol anymore? really?? lol.)

I do not say good byes, rather I'll see you around. We all walk the same curbs, run the same roads, glide the same air space and all while we have the same destination. The tune of "It's a small world after all" from the famous disneyland ride ten plus years ago, simmers in my head.

...what a catchy song.

I digress.

It's been a pleasure to listen to all the contributers to the blog. Thank you all for opening up and sharing from your politcal views all they way down to a wild and crazy weekend.

Figured I'd share my favorite quote on the way out:
"A wise man learns from his mistakes. An even wiserman learns from others mistakes." - Anonymous

Where others have failed you all will succeed...

Good luck and hopefully our meeting grounds do not end here.

What an experience this semester has been, to say the very least. I met a lot of people, learned a lot, wrote a lot...

My life has been rather eventful this past year, and I'm thankful for the opportunity to just sit down and write (both for this class and for myself). Mind you, "eventful" is an understatement--I just can't find a better word. Writing helped me to organize my thoughts, to reflect on my life, to attempt to understand where I am and where I stand.

I apologize to anyone whom I have offended in this blogosphere--trust me, that wasn't my intention or my goal. I don't like to offend people. Inevitably, I still do. Such is life.

I guess is it! Have a great winter break. I wish everyone the best.

I know there is no cursing and all but I think a good word to describe what I feel right now is Fuckkk. Its been a long, yet rewarding semester. I have to begin by thanking mr H for helping MANY students discover their inner writers, poets etc etc. I have gained a lot from this class. The experiences will never be forgotten and the friendships made along the way will surely remain.

Cerritos class,
I would like to apologize, I misjudged yhe quality of all of those who attend Cerritos College. But a few bad apples almost ruined it for all, It wasn't until I met, Jovana, Isaias and Salvador that I understood what a cool group of people the cerritos class was mostly made of. Haha I am glad I now know the meaning of Isaias' display name, and how deep and well educated he was. Good job cerritos! Haha

Goldenwest class,
All of you are fucking cool! Enough said haha but if I were to pick people to go to war with from Goldenwest I'd pick Brandon and Yue. I had never met, nor had a personal chat with Brandon until the day of the reading. And we had a lot of things in common, we made jokes and waited iuntil everybody was sitting down to sit ourselves. And of course Yue is just very cool, haha Goldenwest, Also, Great job!

Cypress Class,
What an amazing class, full of smart and professional individuals. It was a late class, but even then we managed to stay awake and give this class our 110%. Haha great class!

Well now that we dont have school to talk about, i wanna say that i think i have a problem. i can never keep a relationship for more than a month it seems. I dont get it. i recently had a boyfriend, and we broke up. Not anything too bad, i mean we cursed back and forth and yelled but we cooled off and talked about it. We are friends but i just dont understand it. i was telling Cely that i doubt i'll find a prince. and then Isaias said to just wait. but the thing is i do wait. i dont do anything it just happens. and i have guys that i dont want to date and they are only my friends and then they develop a crush. =[ but i dont want to date my friends. thats bad! =[ ugh. so im just bummed because i liked him and blah! and i liked fishy but blah! things never go according to plan eh. you think o this might be it. and slap! to the face! bummer.

fortunately, i do know that i have more life ahead of me. i am only 19 and i am young. so i know its not my time. it just hurts thats all. lol. but ol well. enough sadness.

crap i gotta go to Cely's house!
ahhh bye guys. you all will be missed! MMUUAAAAHHHHHHH
LOVE YOU ALL !

yah i walked up to a bunch of dressed up people and we all just knew we were there for Mr. Hsiao. Anyway, I wish there werent two tables at hoffs hut because i felt like i was missing out on the other conversation. haha idk. Ah man. everytime i come on here i feel my nose start burning, my smile drops to a frown, and i feel as though everything around me is dark and dead. its like those movies where the people are all o so very sad and the girl is walking down the street, she is walking away from the guy she loves because they can no longer be together for some reason. then the skies starts to turn gray, and the clouds begin to crash upon eachother. Thunder strikes and rain begins to pour. As she walks with her head dropped in front of her, while she holds back tears. she looks down at her worn out black chucks.
he stands at a distance thinking what should be done next. he loves this girl. . . (i dare you to move by switchfoot) she begin to cry and the tears are like the tide waves at the beach. so strong, so powerful, but yet so beautiful and natural. he keeps staring as she walks into the distance. . . .

but he doesnt go after her.
he lets her go.

thats how sad i feel when i think that this semester is really over
sniff sniff. i so sad.!

Brandon: OMG yes i think isaias told mr. h to combine the tables, but it didnt follow through. lol. but i was thinking the same o thing. lol. =] be safe hun. merry christmas and happy new year to you to.

yay! lunch time at work. nothing better than food!

Hello my friends from class.

Well it’s been a while since I been on this thing. At least I have had a good reason. Well as you guys know I had my baby. She was born on dec 5th at 9:32pm via c section. She was in the hospital for 10 days. She was well enough to go home and now she is here. She is a good baby, but she hates getting her pamper changed. She is feisty and loud like her mother. She had my boyfriend hands and feet. Here is a new pic.

hey everyone........
are we even supposed to be on here??

oh well :)

well i just came back from vacation....i went to mexico with my boyfriends family and i had so much fun...it was a lot better than i thought it would be. we drove all the way over there and i didnt mind because i got to see so much. i got to meet the rest of my boyfriends family and i really like them. it was so stress free over there. i didnt have a cellphone, i never knew what time it was or what day it was....it wasnt important. i didnt worry about dressing up....it was a break from life i really needed. and OMG everything is so cheap. i brought a puppy back with me. shes a black labrador and shes only a month old, her name is maya. i had to feed her from a baby bottle the whole trip back. shes so cute, i love her.

well to kill my buzz, i get back only to find that all my bank accounts are negative because someone ordered new debit cards for me and used them all over the place and overdrew my accounts....i went to the bank to settle this and the bank agreed only to pay for one account the other i have to pay for. its like over 350 dollars....NO WAY. plus the person opened credit cards under my name that they are trying to make me pay for too....so i had to go file a police report and go through all this drama and they tell me to wait 3 weeks while the bank is charging me late fees everyday.....and i had to quit another job because the lady only wanted to give me 3 hours a day...wth shes crazy i have bills...and to top it all off i come home to realize that my uncle decided to move into my room while i was gone and not only that he had sex with his girlfriend on my bed

UGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGhhhhhhhhh
god bless America .....right

life sucks

well i miss all you guys and i hope you guys are taking Mr. H again, i think i am......

hope everyone had a Merry Christmas and a better new year than mine

LOVE U GUYS ♥

In the story "Allegory of the Cave" by Plato simply talks about humans who are hidden beneith a cave for some odd years. They have been shackled with chains and has never been able experience what life really feels like. In reality most people today have there own caves that they hide in. I once had a cave that i felt i could never leave. To me it was impossible to let go, but anything is possible. one just has to give effort and try. Eventually things will change.

"Allegory the cave" is a philospic story about how some (well most)people are not enlighted, and plato argues to his people that if there a chance for them to see the light they also well be enlighted.

The Allegory of the cave is an analogy that explains how people live their whole lives perceiving a reality that is just an interpretation of what is true. Only when they accept the realization that everything they know is just an interpretation, can they see the way to truth. It is up to them if they want to find truth or not. Those that do find truth, become enlightened.

While reading Man's Search for Meaning by Victor E. Frank,I thought about what I saw and what I heard in the museum of Tolerance. This story is meant for people to read and think about life from different prospective, and know that there are two sides of life. White and black. Those people in the story who looked like skeletons and were disgusted with their skin and rugs, they knew what is like to starve, and they knew what is like to be weak; and at the same time they had to watch other people dyeing. The reason being was because they had no human power themselves. However, just to let you all know, if there is a chance in life to help others, do so. That is the whole meaning of life, to be good to others and it will pay off.

Homonyms by Giorgio Agamben
I found this story extraordinarily interesting. The whole concept about how and why things are name is debated through out this paper. The paper focuses on how things are classified, and how the linguistics affects ones thought process of words. As a result, concepts can not be fully grasped because one associates that very word that describes the concept with an object. Therefore, the concept cannot be grasped because one will not be able to differentiate it from the object. Then there is the whole concept of homonyms and synonyms. The whole concept introduced in Metaphysics seems to boggle the mind at first, but then it becomes understandable when described in Aristotle’s example. The example of the horse’s and how it can pertain to a group of synonyms and homonyms at the same time helps explain the concept. However, later on one discovers that the idea of synonyms and homonyms is neither a concept or an object, but rather the idea of being its self and being in language. That one cannot be named by others and that the name of something does not really matter. However, the thing must have a name in order to belong, but it can only be named be itself. To me, the whole concept of homonyms and synonyms seems to be based around ambiguity. In other words, one can not be named, yet must be expressed verbally in order to belong. This has left me perplexed and I am not completely sure what the whole paper means.

Homonyms by Giorgio Agamben

ok...WoW! in my opinion this guy isn't that great with explaining things. i found this really difficult to comprehend. I'm not sure i understood it completely but it seems to be about language. How we as people associate words with things and we catagorize everything into classes. This effects our comprehension of language and limits our ability to grasp the entire idea. I might not be right on this but i think the author uses language as an example but wants us to think deeper. How we as people are conformed to catagorizing. how we as people naturally mold ourselves into what society tells us we should be. we mold ourselves into these catagories so we can belong. the same way we catagorize words to make them " being-in-language". People are homonyms yet they strive to be synonyms, the same as every one else, normal, the model person society advertises. there is no individuality. Just like in allegory and the cave, the prisoners have the power to change their circumstances, yet they have no desire to. They have accepted life chained and in the dark as the "norm" . We hold ourselves back, if everyone was to be their own individual the world would be so much more interesting. it is sad to be told that people have conformed all the way down to language. it is even sadder to know that we are the ones preventing ourselves from greatness for sake of belonging.
" This relation does not found a new class, but is, in each class, that which draws singularity from its synonym, from its belonging to a class, not toward any absence of name or belonging, but toward the name itself, toward a pure and anonymous homonymy".

- i hope im on the right track. We definetly need to have a discussion about this in class. Please!

After reading the story "Homonyms" by Giorgio Agamben i found my self kind of not really getting anything the story was about. what i did get out of it was that it was a very confusing story and how in this story they are using very big words that i dont know the meaning of such as: paradox, logicians, hierarchy.

well i rea this story a few times and once today and i still find it a bit confusing, however i will try my best to tell you the story. He is refering to objects as things, no not things as a class and when there together theira duistinct lass that needs the help of each. As a matter a fact, he suspects trhem as a living thig as they had a soul or feelings. the rest of the story beging to talk the basics of synonyms, and other english words. he tells the reader the definition and then begin to critisize there nature of understanding.

In the story of "llegory of the cave", there is a ypung man that is bound to the earth by chains of iron of iron. behind him is a brigth illuminating fire and thus he cannot see the ligth. he is afraid of the ligth. The way it shines and its illumination as well as the dance it does over the shadow. He could hear the fire burning and thus is afraid to turn.he is forced to the shadows and does not know jow to communicate with others. But once he is sets free and escapes the horrid place, he could only wonder were the world would take him. He was bound to the earth by his won guilt and shame, he was forced to the darkness by the deception he told on others, and his lack of communication was caused by himself for not telling the things he should. this was caused by his hands alone and justice was served. now that he is set free he will no longer feel the suffering he undure while he was kept prison of his wrong doing and will tell others like him what not to do.

Its funny how I read over this story now and know what I am reading about. Last semester I remember reading the exact same story and remembering asking myself why I was reading it. Everyone stuggles with something and thos story can help many people fight through there cave!

The road not taken by robert frost

So in this poem, it talks about a fork in the road. the traveler looks at each road carfully and thus sees the changes. in one road he sees everything one migth find in a regular raod in the forest, however its not been walked much and not many travelers go thru there. on the other side we see the same road but wear down and damaged because many travelers have walked thru. the traveler now thinks and goes with the road that has been walked the less and walks a days worth. he thinks about returning and see if he could go thru the other road but desides to give it another day. upon ending the second day the travel agrees with the desicion of takling the less know road and he is contempt with the desicion.

Now the point the author is trying to say is that we humans dont necessarily have to take the path of oters. i dont remember were i saw this exacr situation when i was younger in a televison program i saw, but they desided to put it in. in one side there lies a road full oh dark and dead trees. the sun canot penetrate the darkness and its so cold by the air that comes out. on the other hand , the other road opposite is illumination with the sun, the wild flowers coming out and everything is peacefully. sometimes the things we see is not necessarily true. the road that looks safe migth not be safe at all nor does the road that looks dangerouse is not dangerouse at all. this is were the term "never judge a book by its cover" comes in. by seeing the "road" the traveler see that the road was walked upon many times and is weary. the opposite road looked almost fresh, exept with a few exeptions. the traveler saw the road that was walked upon and decided to take the lesser known path. thus becoming happy.

I read both short stories, Only daughter and Cathedral, and fouun both heart warming and interesting to read.I decided to post on Cathedral. So here i am reading this story about a blind man, then all of sudden i found myself wondering what it would be like to be totaly blind, so often we take the main senses that we have for granted. The eye sight is one of our main senses.Eventhough I wear glasses, and have had a lazy eye sense birth. I'm thankful that I'm not totaly blind.I was shocked when i was three quarters of the way through reading, and out of no where the one fellow asked the blind man if he wanted to smoke some dope. It totaly chaged where i thought the story was headed. Anyway I enjoyed it alot. and Professor Hsaio I hope Im on the right track for blogging.

Read the Story Cathedral and found it quite interesting. So often we take the sense of eye sight for granted. Though I wear glasses, and have had a lazy eye sense birth, I still found myself comparing myself to a totaly blind person. I'm thankful that I'm not totaly blind. Three quarters of the way into the story, and having a pretty good idea where it was headed. I could'nt believe it when out of know where the one fellow asked the blind man if he wanted to smoke some dope. I could not stop laughing. Professor I hope this is what you are looking for.

Homonyms was really hard for me to understand. Im not sure if I really even understand enough to blog about it. So far i think that the Author is talking about classifying with out giving something a label. In other words Don't judge something based solely on what you see, people need to take time to educate themselves first.

I picked the poem:
PIGHEADED POET by William Carlos Williams

Everything I do 1
Everything I write
Drives me 3
From those I love
If it is good 5
They are bewildered
If it is bad 7
Ashamed
At great risk 9
To the love they bear me
I walk barefoot 11
In quicksand

I felt like this poem spoke wonders about me. I feel like I could not have summed up my life any better myself. I feel like every choice I makes leaves people judging me. If I do something good in my life I don’t get much praise but if I do something that my family doesn’t approve of I never really hear the end of it. It’s hard for people to fully understand me and why I do what I do. I love the chaos and I love the risks and out comes that come with my choices. As long as I keep myself from sinking everything else will work itself out. In the end I am only battling myself.

So, I am officially sick. Yay! I think I have a cold. I am in the computer lab right now falling asleep, and trying to stay alert....I feel as if I am in a bubble.. =(

Anyways, reading Obama's speech gave me a little comfort and hope that I think that some of America has lost due to the economic/health issues. I really enjoyed his speech and I have always thought that Obama is a phenomenal speaker. "Yes we can!" is such a profound motto, it reminds me of the story of the "Little Engine That Could" and I think expresses the attitudes that many Americans possess today. I have to give it to him, whether he really did appreciate McCain, or whether it was just a face in commending McCain for all the hard work he had done not only as his opponent, but as a person, was very admirable. I believe that he is someone that can truly see eye to eye with not only the "elite" (haha), but the common folk as well which is something that every leader should possess. Kudos to Obama's speech.

The Statue That Did Not Look Right by Malcolm Gladwell
The story is a bout a statue that was bought for 10 million dollars that turned out to be a fake. The underlying main idea is that we have an “intuitive repulsion” that warns us of something that will bring us misfortune. This inner mechanism is said to be like a fight or flight decision tool. It is said that we all possess this gift and that it is somehow more reliable than deep concentration and valid research. The author illustrates that this statue in question was researched for 14 months before it was ultimately purchased. It was documented by experts who were lacking in their field and the buyer had fallen prey to the appeal to authority fallacy. I do not know about these people. If it were me, I would ask for an unconditional guarantee of authenticity if I were spending 10 million dollars of my money or anyone else’s. The story goes on to tell us that all of the evidence that went with the statue was also falsified with intent to deceive. The main idea suggests that we should rely on our “intuitive repulsion” to save us in these times of indecision. I could not help but wonder if this gambler’s fallacy would prove to be profitable at an Indian casino. Maybe I should look into this further. Although this time most of the experts from where the statue was supposed to have come from disagreed intuitively, it is still a good idea do one’s own homework. I guess if it looks too good to be true, it probably is.

I am very sure it was supposed to be under Fall 2009 but my classmates seem to be commenting here. I guess I will have to be the silly one that comments in both haha. Anyway I am really excited to be taking this class. The last english class I took was about two years ago and that is where I realized that I am not half bad at writing. I hope this class can transform my writing skills. From what I hear it will do that and then some.

Hello Everyone! Welcome Belinda, my name is Kyle Umbarger. I was born in Huntington Beach on September 16, 1988 at Huntington Hospital. I have red hair, blue eyes, and 6'2". I am currently enrolled at both Orange Coast College and Goldenwest. I am currently taking 10 units at Orange Coast, and 3 units at Goldenwest, so that I can have enough to transfer for Fall 2010. I am a Business Finance Major, and either minoring in Geology or Psychology. English is my weak subject, but hopefully I will become decent at writing by the end of this class. I would really like to improve on expanding my ideas on essays, so therefore I can have better papers. On my free time I surf, body surf, snowboard, party, or do something to entertain my low attention span. I hate being bored because it makes me feel like I am not learning anything new. I really enjoy learning new things, even when a challenge is envolved.

Cancer journals

Brest cancer is a very powerful topic these days. I see all types of women trying to raise awareness for this cause. This story cancer journals talks about how the author make her choice to leave herself. She does not believe that women should have implants after cancer. I think that no one should try to influence others to not get implants after cancer. That should be a women’s choice if you want to get them do it if not don’t. make a choice do not others make choices for you in every part of life.

I thought this was a very funny story because it starts out as one of those days when one recognizes how fabulous everything is and it ends with finding out something horrible. Not that discovering your husband is sleeping with one of your friends is humorous; I would be far from laughing. It’s just funny the way life kicks you in the face sometimes. I was there no too long ago, having a great day and then learning at the peak of all my positive energy that an on again off again ex of mine whom I had very recently stopped dating decided to get married to some random girl from his past. My happiness was comparable to flying in sixth gear on straight away, and the news was like suddenly smashing into a brick wall. I was floored. Of course it would have been much worse if I knew her or, even more devastating, had shared one of those “Yes. Just that” moments with her as Bertha was sure she and Miss Foulton did in the story. It was horrifying just the same though. I wish there was more to read, that it could have went on to explain that after everyone left she confronts him and something crazy happens, but it didn’t. I have a guy friend who recently got married. His wife has been ten times happier since then but she also complains ten times more. A couple of days ago she went through his phone and found out he still talks to THE ex-girlfriend. I felt bad for the both of them. I could only imagine the burning sensation I would get in my stomach if I got caught doing something like that, but I felt bad for her too. She felt so deceived. They are “really good pals” as well.

Baba and Daddy Gus
I’m from the South, and Baba totally reminds me of my grandmother and great-grandmother, my Granny. I have a pretty big family. My mother’s side starts in Kentucky and spreads east from there. My step dad has a huge Samoan family that seems to never end because we have had relatives in every state we have lived in. I am also very close to one of my distant sibling’s families. He has an expansive Mexican family that mostly lives in the IE. Of all these relatives, the ones on my mother’s side have made the biggest impression on me. I visited Kentucky about two years ago and it felt like nothing had changed from when I moved at the age of seven. Moving from Kentucky to Hawaii was like going from planet to planet. The stereotypes that black people shared for each other completely melted away. I could be friends with other little black girls without their mothers talking about me for being light skinned or thinking “I have good hair”. The years I spent in Kentucky shaped who I am though. My Granny was one of those people who never rode in cars or liked to leave the house much. She didn’t trust anybody, not the doctors, especially not the police. The first time she rode on a plane she was arrested for trying to sneak on a gun. She really thought everyone was after her. My mom would say her antics were a result of old age and senility, but they were not surprising to anyone. From the short years I had with her, I remember few things. She would say I was a sweet girl because I would eat anything she cooked when I came to visit. No one else would because everyone joked about it being something country like possum. She had hard wood floors that I would stomp my feet on in her house that I recall being way too rickety. It was never bright enough and it always smelled like old and spice, not old spice. She had dark, papery skin, I can’t remember her hair but I do remember her bony hands and wet thin-lipped kisses, and the swearing. My Granny had a foul mouth and she was always giving me advice about people trying to trick me that I never understood because I was five. “Play with a puppy; he’ll lick you in the mouth”, is very Granny. My grandmother was the tough lover who would make me pick my switch off the tree when I was bad. My Granny never made me feel bad about my long hair or complexion. My Grandmother would not acknowledge it because she didn’t want me to feel like I was better than my cousins who weren’t “double agents”. I value my time with both of them. The story made me think of all the old people in the south that time has passed by.

I have to admit that at first i though this idea was really weird, nut it also makes it more interesting.
The Allegory of the Cave by Plato
This story was great I really liked it because it made you reading it.It was a very simple conversation between Glaucon and Socrates but also very deep .

In todays class i understood it even better when everyone sort of shared their "caves".
In this story the prisoners are so used to their life or maybe used to being in there that they do not even want to see the real world but also, they are missing out on what really is out there. the prisoner who is free is seeing what really out there and now pity those in the cave and questions him elf whether to go back and help or let them be there in their reality.

"Better to be the poor servant of a poor master, and to endure anything, rather than think as they do and live after their manner"

This quote comes upon something really significant meantioned in this story. It conveys that it is better to suffer whatever it takes to reach the top, rather than having a false representation. It's all about giving it all your strength and knowing your limits rather than being ignorant and live in a miserable lifestlyle. As in for example; There was a time that I thought living beside my parents all my life, I will never face any difficulties. I wanted everything the easy way, therefore it was really hard for me during my senior year in high school when my parents decided to move out of town. I always though not having my parents would be very difficult and something I would've never gone through, but i realized everything takes work and time in order to reach what you want in this life. I had to learn how to face the reality and not blind myself in what I "couldn't" do.

After reading and going over the story with Mr.H i noticed what Socrates and Glaucon are talking about.

The line that got my attention is when Socrates is telling Glaucon "to them, I said, the truth would be literally nothing but the shadows of the images." (line 13). I have a friend that gets everything she wants everything is handed to her. Nothing to worry about everything you need and want is there. what she dont see is the damage they are doing to her by giving her everything. Her parents make everything look so easy so she thinks its going to be a piece of cake for herself. For example she doesnt pay bills so she dont have nothing to worry about but once her parents are gone and she has to pay them than she is going to see that what she taught it was the real world its not the true. She would have a hard time adapting the the truth. They go on trips and get everything she want so she sees that they dont have a hard time but they are they just dont show it to her. She would ask me to go with them but i already knew the thruth and wouldnt be able to go because things never got handed to me i have to work for my stuff. She would complaint because i wouldnt want to go or go shopping with her. She had money to throw away since she didnt have to work for it. Now she has opened her eyes and found the thruth of how everything really works. She saw that the image her parenst were giving her was not reality it was more of a cover up to not worry her about things at home till she figure things out.

the allegory of the cave is from a famous author known as, Plato.the story was very hard for me to understand but after taking a quiz and talking about it with mr.H and my fellow peers I think I have realized what the story means. The background of the story takes place in a cave. there is a fire with people surrounding it.Past the fire and there is a wall.past the wall the is i believe a hall way with marionette players, and in front of them there are puppets.the two main characters of the story is Socrates and Glaucon. there are also prisoners in this cave. I believe that the cave represents life and kind of being in a cave would be like our childhood and it shield's us from the cold world out there and other stuff we will probably never see. That's what the prisoners are for,i think that there us and were basically prisoners because were so shielded from everything when were younger and than we have to face it when we grow up.

Glaucon said "Yes,he said,I think that he would rather suffer anything these false notions and live in this miserable manner."

I picked this quote because not only was it the first thing i saw but i kind of thought of it as,that the guy is so real and realizes that this everything is fake and he's living miserable manner.which he rather suffer than be fake.

in this world thiers always going to be people that judge people on the way they appear. the reason is why is that they may be feel they got competiton or they may be feel threated by them. sometime they do it just to be cool. i know for a reason becasue i used hang with people that like just to talk. they felt like if they were cool kids. one day i decide to leave the so called cool kids and hang with the people that my friends. use to mouth talk, i really liked hanging out with people that just dont judge becasue for one. no one is perfect and you cant judge someone if you dont know them. like a old saying dont judge a book by its cover.

The allegory of the cave by Plato

At first i didnt understand what was going on. I had the idea of some people been stuck ina cave but was somewhat lost. Once the teacher explained i understood more of it and got the point.

some of us when we were teenagers think of runing away from problem at home with our parents. we might of seen friends move out and think everything is good in their lifes because we dont see them struggleling. In one of the lines socrates says to Glaucon "to them, i said, the truth would be literally nothing but the shadows of the images."(13).

For example i have a friend that has been living wither boyfriend in an apartment. They go out and have fun we all hangout together sometimes. We have younger friends and want the same. They think moving out is going to be easy because see my friends been happy together. They dont see that they have to struggle to pay rent, bills, food and other essentials.

cathedral by Raymond Carver

Cathedral is about how this guy is judging a blind man just because he never had a blind friend before. People shouldnt be judging other people without knowing them even though everyone do it at some point.

In Raymond carver the guy says "i dont have any blind friends." paragraph 5. I taught it was rude of him to act that way with his wife about her blind friend. she just trying to do something nice for him after he lost his wife. That why i like the quote never judge a book by its cover. You cant judge because you never know that person migh end up beign your best friend. Maybe that person might end up beign rude but atleast you got to know who they really are before judging them. The old man gave her a job when she needed it so its nice of her to let him spend time with them.

Everyone has lost someone they loved so much before but had to let go. It's really hard when people have to go through that. Some just go into depression after that. I seen parents lose a son or daughter which is the worse pain they can suffer through. I've lost family members before but the one that would hurt me the most is my grandpa.

Like in baba an daddy Gus by Hell hooks they say in line 7 "always they filled my nostrils with the scent of happiness." my grandpa has been their for me since I was little. He spoiled me when I was little but things have flipped now. I know he ain't going to last long anymore because he is really sick. I have to realize and put on my head that one day ok going to have to let go of him. It's going to be painful because he raised me when I was little. Life goes on and I know I made him proud of me. Atleast he would be in a better place.

I like how the father realize all the hard work his daughter did and finally accept the work she did. Most of us don't have that support like me. My dad never told me I'm just suppose to be a house wife or go to school he simply don't care. I like how her father saw her work and liked her story and he asked her " where can we get more copies of this for the relatives?"p.17.

I believe that a girl should be able to go to school and became someone in life not just a house wife. No matter what it is a father should always support them. I would do the same as her focus on school on my career first than later maybe get married and form a family on my own. I don't think a girl should be raised just to be a house wife it's better of to get a career. What if the husband lives her and she doesn't have a job or career she is going to suffer. That why I believe that girl should go to college not only be a house wife. A father can't force a daughter into beign a house wife and guys go to school. It should be even just that the girl has to also play the role of a wife not just work.

Its not good to be ignore you feel so alone you have nobody its juts like when parents decide to have another baby. you feel that your parents arent going to pay that attention as they use to. you will try anything to garve thir attention but it usely dosent work unless you hurt yourself thats when they do give you alot of attention. afterwords it all gone so the only thing you can do is find something to keep you busy keep the mind off such as read books, play with toys and watch tv. but when the parents come up to you they usely give a speech saying your going to be a big brother and you should be role model to them. thats they will always be pround of you becasue they know we will successed in life. its normal to be jealous and its ok if they dont give us the attention we use get but they know their proud of us and they will be thier for everything we go throught life.

I Stand Here Ironing
by Tillie Olsen

mother have a lot of stuff in thier minds they have so much to do thats is really hard. mothers go throught a lot, a mother that puts a lot of attention to their child is a lot of work but is nice. a mother aslo wants the father to enteract with their childrens because they know they need a father figure. but if a father walks ou its even harder for a mother because they know how to do around the house. mother alwya treasure something in life thats when a baby is born they will always remenber that they will never forget because thats when she gave life and begin her life. a mother knows she will do anything for her children but to all of this a mother doesnt have it easy because they do alot especially when the father walk out on them. in all of this dont take parent for granted.

Mothers go through a lot of things special when they don't have the support from the child dad. They have to live their kids with some people that can sometimes do harm. They do it because they need to work to pay rent and to bring home food to feed her kids. They hardly got time to spend with their child. That damages the child because it doesn't get the attention it needs from the mother. Mother suffer a lot having to live her child with people just to go to work and missingg out on her child life. It is very hard to work and have kids. Specialy when the child needs a lot of your attention. When they are little that when they miss the mom more. Once they grow and stuff they won't respect her because she was never there. Until they are on there own they would understand what their mom had to go through.specially when they are babies all the special care they need. I can imagine how painful is to live your child with other people because need to go to work. A mother would love to be part of their child lives but it very hard when you don't have any support.

Moths by Helena Maria Viramontes

It sad when you are treated like your not wanted at home. when parents send you to your grandpa or grandma to raise you. when that person passes away its like your left alone no one to show you love. Instead of hiting that little girl and punishing her they should pay more attention to her. Her sisters should pay more attention to her and give her advice. The parents should see what wrong with her daughter. Just beacuse she a little different her sisters or her parents shouldt be treating her like that. They should love her for who she is. Its their daughter they should be able to show her love and make her feel protected like her grandma did. To her the only persn that seem tp care for her its her grandma. She is the only one that made her feel loved. She was the only that seem to care and not judge her. Her parents are wrong for treating her like she dont matter and defending the older simblings. They all hurting her without them realizing it.

It shows how people really dont care about the loving ones until they pass alway. i know for a reason my x girlfreind mom pass alway. she was rude to her she had always fight with her. yet alone when ever she agrue with her mom she comes to me. i had always told her to not fights with her mom becuase she can never know something can go bad and end up regerting everything she had said to her but people dont listen until it happen. which it did her mom pass alway and know she has to take responsibility around her house. she has to do everything her mom use to do and she tell me she regerts everything. it just shows how some people dont appreciate their loving one until they pass alway. thats when they wish they had spent alot of time with them. the concept of this story is get to know your living loving one before they die and be nice to them.

this story brings out the fear on everyone. stroms are always scary because you dont know what could happen when a storm. storms have a mysteries ways of it power. at first storms can not always be strong but sometime at the last moment it could get stronger so theres sometime can not perdict how strong a strom can be. the person that can get scared are childrens. the childrens are the most scary ones. the reason is why, becuase they see or hear what people say about storms so they make them scared of stroms. also when its a bad stroms people are likely to tell their secrets the reason is they feel that something might go wrong so they like to say everything so in other word stroms bring family closer sometime in a good way or in a bad way. storms are scary.

At first i ddint understand the story until i reread it and i fanilly got it. just shows that we can not always have the perfect relationship thiers no such thing as a perfect relationship. theirs always going to be someone is going to do something bad to hust the other one not on purpose because they do it behide their back. they think they wont get cought but eventually they will. thats when the whole world turns upside down becuase they can not believe that happen to them. some of them are ok with it. the reason they are ok with becasue deep inside they know they still love them. everyone has a different why of feeling for each other after they been cheated.

My name is Christopher laroque. I go by Chris to make it easier. I have been here in cerritos for 2 years. My time at this school has been good for the most part. I have struggled in classes in the past. Now I feel I am doing better with my classes. I am also in the simple truth club on campus I recently started going it has helped me so much. Having this spiritual lifestyle is something good in my life. This class seems to be hard and fun at the same time. I hope I learn a lot of new things in this class.

Hello. My name is Christian Nunez and this will be my second semester in college as well as having Mr. Hsiao as my teacher. My biggest interest I have always had was working with computers. I like to play around using varieties of programs and creating art. I am a very quite and calm person. I like to listen to indie music and some 70's stuff. I am very shy at first but as time passes i will talk more. As far as my classes, I got lucky getting into two that i was on the waiting list. This class was one of them and gladly i was able to get in. I hope to enjoy this class as much as i did last time, but I am not looking forward to all the hard work their is.

One of the quotes that i like is " There are things known and their are things unknown and in between are the doors"- Jim Morrison
This is pretty much is saying that their are things that we know and do not know. The doors signifies the answers.

Well Looks like we both have something in common. :)
I too like listening to indie music, maybe we should see if we both like the same bands as well. Its always great to find people with the same musical interests.

What I learned in class: allegory of the cave
In this story there are three people trapped in a cave with nothing else to see but fire and puppets. This is how they have lived their life. then they are free and can walk around to see the world. This can be hard for someone that only knew one way. One thing Plato writes is “he will be unable to see the realities of which in his former state he had seen shadows”. Having to see something new something real after seeing nothing in so long can be hard on someone. They will want to go back to where they are comforted in what they know. What they know are shadows keeping them from growing. In our society we are shown that having grate expensive things will make us happy and popular. This is the shadow that many see, the shadow that hides what is true happiness. What is true will be new and scary for many and they will not want to come to it they will want to stay with the false shadow. Seeing the truth will be hard on them.

The Allegory of the Cave

Well this is probably my fifth time reading this story and it is phenomenal. After last semesters assignment, it really has you thinking of your own personal experiences you had relating it to your cave. Plato sends out this message to us making us think twice of what is real in life and what is not. He uses riddles to send out his message in his own way. In the beginning of the story he creates two characters chained inside a cave only seeing in front of them. In back of them there is a fire so all they see is puppets, or shadows in front of them. He later on lets them out of the cave so he can show him the real world. They come out confused and realize how all this time they were just seeing the mere reflections of the real people. In "The Allegory of the Cave" Plato says, "He will require to grow accustomed to the sight of the upper world." (21) In this quote the prisoners are released from there cave and come out to the real world. This is when the prisoners have to get accustomed to the actual real world and not the mere reflections they have been seeing all this time.

“AOTC”
This will be my first time ever reading “AOTC”. Honestly, I was very confused about what was going on. I had to read it a couple of times. Talking about the story itself, in class, helped me somewhat understand what Plato was trying to describe in his story. Plato Says, ‘’ Here they have been from their childhood ( In an underground den ) and have their legs and necks chained so that they cannot move, and can only see before them, being prevented by the chains from turning round their heads ‘’. This quote is saying to me that children tend to be sheltered ( chained ) as a child, mainly by parents, and only told or shown what their parents think is right or best fit for them to be exposed to. I can relate to this because growing up my Father was very strict and I wasn’t able to watch certain T.V shows, movies, or listen to certain music. Now that I think of it, he was trying to prevent me from being exposed to violence and cussing and anything at time that he thought would take away my innocence. I hope to better understand this short story as time goes on and we discuss what each paragraph really means.

The Allegory of the Cave

This is my first time reading The Allegory of the Cave by Plato and I found it to be very interesting. It is a story of how influence can truly affect one's way of thinking. In this story we read of prisoners who have been tied up for a long period of time inside a cave, unable to move and facing a wall. On the wall all they can see are shadows which are from puppets that are on a wall behind the prisoners and there is also a fire.

These prisoners are taught to believe that what they see is real. Their knowledge of what could be outside of the cave is vague in comparison to what they are taught by these shadows. Upon their release the first prisoner sees that there is a fire and puppets, these are the most realest things he knows of and he believes they are very real, the prisoner does not understand that there is more realism outside in the world than there is in there inside the cave. The second prisoner is let outside the cave and realizes that everything has become more real and beyond what was ever imaginable for them.

The cave is just another metaphor for thinking inside of a box. If you do not expand your knowledge you will stay ignorant of greater things out there in life. Some people choose not to think of the greater things out there. In this quote from the story (31) "Yes, he said, I think that he would rather suffer anything than entertain these false notions and live in this miserable manner." He is basically saying that the other prisoner would rather die than to accept facts that he does not want to believe in. They do not want to think outside their box because they are not comfortable with it. A stubborn mind does not gain any real knowledge of a real world.

The Allegory of the Cave
I like this story because Socrates talks in it about the wisdom. Socrates explained in very
interesting way a story of prisoners who lived in a scary cave, and they were chained. The
chains prevented them from turning around their heads. They were like the puppets that
marionette players use them. I take this story personally because it reminds me that I suppose to
leave my sins. I represent the prisoner who was chained by chains of my sins and my ignorance.
I cannot leave my sins easily. the chains of the sins are so strong, but I should try and ask God
for help. The prisoners always looks to their shadows, or the shadows of one another, which the
fire throws on the opposite wall of the cave? Also, I look to the sins of the others, and I compare
myself with them. I cannot move forward because I always look back. The Holy Bible is the
source of wisdom that represents the light. The light shows to the prisoner the way of getting out
of the cave. Socrates explained to Glaucon the way if the wisdom, and I take this philosophy in
spiritual way.

Separation-Encounter-Return

Reading this story is very bizarre and confusing. In the beginning of the story it talks about how you have your own path in life. You are the one that can make a change in your for a better future or a negative future. Later on in the story it talks about having someone to look up to. This person can be your godfather or simply someone you look up to. Having this person close to you makes you go forward in life. Without that person you can still keep going forward but with some struggles. Near the end of the first page, it talks about hero's. Richard Rohr said," a hero is one who gives his life to something bigger than himself."(6) I think this quote is trying to say how someone who is a hero tries hard with their full potential to achieve something they have never done. I think this story is a motivation to keep on going forward. Although i understood half of it, i think i got the main point. I think the story is divided into steps to be able move forward in your own life.

Separation Encounter Return
I like this article because it talks about three stages that are happened with everyone. Those
are Separation from God when one commit a sin, the Encounter with Truth decrease the
ego requirements, and the return to God give people the indoor peace. The Separation is much
more a state of consciousness or unconsciousness! Than it is an individual, immoral action. The
sins separate people from God. The Encounter with the numinous is always destruction and
annihilation for the ego. The Encounter is important step for repentance. The Return gives people
the reward of repentance. It gives the peace inside people’s hearts, and it gives the blessing in
people’s life. Jesus Christ wants us to follow his message, and the spiritual persons are suppose
to be the model of pious persons as sons of God. Finally, when someone lives God, he is not only
saying I love God, but also he follow the commandments.

Separation-Encounter-Return

To me this text is pointing out the commonly heard patterns of stories. In paragraph one we see an example of stories from religions, in the Abrahamic religions its always the same story the "messiah" is revealed, dies, and is risen.
We also see that in paragraph two there's always talk about a "second birth", usually a second birth is when a person comes out of their state of unknowing, or in other words ignorance. This text continues speaking of the many other things we see in stories such as something similar to an epiphany which comes before the rebirth. We see a guardian figure that protect the main character of the story.
The text continues on explaining what else we see throughout the story.
I believe it is a basic unraveling of oneself. In paragraph six, sentence one it says "As the cocoon of the false self ("sin") is gradually let go, the true self stands revealed." When we are "reborn" or when we get out of our "cocoons" we turn into our real selves, our true form comes out. We become a hero with a purpose and we would give it all up to accomplish that purpose

Separation-Encounter-Return

Subsequent to reading the segment I heavily pondered about my life. The title ties into everything related to being a mere human. Separation of whatever obstacle that challenges you in what may be more than one overwhelms you with who you are and who you desire to be. The alter ego we have all identified ourselves with regardless if that is now, or in our past, is what society has lead us to believe is our stance as individuals. We separate the little child from the grown adult of our dreams and soon realize later that maybe what we had envisioned really is not our vision to begin with. Thus forcing us to encounter who we truly are and what we justly believe. The face in the mirror glancing back at us and we come to accept what we have done and own up to our mistakes. We are who we are, we are all human and we do make mistakes. We learn from where we come from, we accept where we have been, having helped induce us to where we stand now in life. Nonetheless, having the return of the “new” person as a reflection of the one who we thought we would never be again. That is my take on the reading. My constant use of “we, us, and our” hopefully offends no one; it is always stated you are never alone in any position you are in. I am not sure as to who said that yet, it is applicable.

Wild Man to Wise Man by Richard Rohr
The book is very interesting. Because it cites that to be a wise man, you have to encounter difficult steps to get in return the wisdom of a wise man. The story begins by stating life will be death, failure and absurdity , which can lead to renewal, joy, and beauty. They illustrate the steps that you have to follow in life to be a wise man. Richard Rohr gives other examples like the two births to come enlightened. The first one is innate by being biological and the other one is having the opportunity to change. In the Christian west tends to call the first born “ sin” because there are not wise in life. Another , example is protective figure they give us the strength and direction to the would - be hero. It states that proactive figures are always wise elder, a guardian angel, a patron saint, a spirit guide or a wise teacher that show to follow the right path.

Separation-Encounter-Return
The first impression I got when reading S-E-R was that Richard Rohr was giving his reasons why people worship certain ideologies. The quote I found interesting was, “without the spiritual journey, we have the strange phenomenon of people who supposedly avoid “sins” but are still in the state of sin! They don’t cuss, drink, or run around but do so from a totally unenlightened consciousness of fear, disguised self-interest, social convention or even hatred of others who do such things.” This quote means to me that people who believe in some kind of religion look down on those that don’t believe in anything. They believe they live in sin because they have no faith even though they try their best to avoid sinful things. This is being a hypocrite. Those that have faith are just as sinful as those who do in many cases. Those that have faith think they are better because they believe in some kind of religion. I believe one must not judge others but look within themselves and fix their own flaws

Mindsets

This book is interesting because it talks about 2 mindsets. The first one is the Fixed mindset, people that have this mindset do not like change. The second one is the growth mindset, people with this mindset like challenges and always want to stretch their knowledge. One of my favorite quotes is in page 11 by Howard Gardner he states " Extraordinarily minds have a special talent for identifying their own strengths and mistakes." He says in the quote that smart people acknowledge their weaknesses to make them one of the their strengths. Another quote alike is on page 16 by Bengamin Barber he quotes" I don't divide the world into the weak and the strong, or successes and failures... i divide the world into the learners and the non-learners." He cites that the people what want to learn, they always waiting for another more difficult challenge.

mindset:
I'm not much of a reader but as I read through the first 3 chapters it makes you stop to think about what type of mindset you have. Theres two different type of mindset, you have people with either a growth or fixed mindset. There is a big difference between the two.The growth mind is a type of person that believes that if there is a way to expand there intelligence then they are willing to make the extra effort to do so.On the other hand the people that have a fixed mind believe that no matter how hard they try they would never be able to change how intelligent they are.

In regards to Aaron Sobolew, I wish I was present for class to witness his speech. I would definitely have loved to hear some motivation at this phase in life. Unfortunately I was unable to attend therefore, that is all that I can say, sadly.
In chapter three of Mindset, I had read that the few students who wanted to achieve studied differently than those who had went over the notes. This chapter reflects on what we do that sets us apart from one another, yet there are ways of being just as successful as the “stereotypical” nerd or teacher’s pet. Every subject matter within the chapter began with a question. However, I feel as though the underlining question is will we apply what we have learned or read to attempt to fix ourselves? Or are we pleased with who we are that no matter if we try or not, we are who we are and there is no change? Referring back to the fixed and open minded individual lecture we had discussed in class, as well as this book. I can only speak for myself, yet I know I am willing to change; it is to the degree of how far I should step out. Going ahead of my comfort zone is key yet how far will it show a vast distinction? I do not like to acknowledge that I may need to reassess myself, yet with this book I am continuously re-evaluating where I may possibly be.

Mindset, Chapter 4.

In reading chapter 4, a quote that struck the underlining message of the chapter for me was on page 95, “Character, Heart, Will, and the Mind of a Champion.. It goes by different names, but it’s the same thing. It’s what makes you practice, and it’s what allows you to dig down and pull it out when you most need it.” (Carl S. Dweck). No one chooses to be a failure; you just consent to yourself to be converted into one. There are deeper strives than what most beings are alert, at the breaking point when majority of people fall to their knees, that a miracle happens and their will brightens the way. Pride can block us from the ultimate path we seek. Your character is what sets you apart from the rest of the crowd. The motivation of your heart pushes you to do what is best for you. The will you enforce can never be limited nor shattered what is set before you. The mind of the champion is who you are as you reach for your goals. As you adjust to each milestone you break, your mind will develop into the champion you are.

Mindset; Chapter 6.

While reading this chapter, I was intrigued to find a quote that my family has their own perspective on. On page 150, “Every marriage demands an effort to keep it on the right track; there is a constant tension… between the forces that hold you together and those that can tear you apart.” Says John Gottman. With my family there is my aunt who is not divorced just yet, and is already engaged to her high school “dream boy”. This has our family torn between supporting her and being brutally honest with her. I do not wish to go into the details behind her marriage, except to say that it was a good marriage. After reading chapter six and the previous chapters, it helped me to understand myself and the way my aunt thinks as well. It is nice to see the interpretation behind the way she thinks the way she does, without having to confront her. It is amazing now that after reading the chapters just speaking to someone, I can decipher if they are fixed mindset or growth mindset. I love how this book emphasizes thinking out of the box, and uses everyday problems to clarify the purpose.

Second Harvest Food Drive;

Yesterday I had attended the food drive that was at 7am. Yes it was early, but definitely worth it. I was expecting to be wearing a hair net and putting food on trays and then speaking with people shortly after. That was nothing like what actually took place. There were a range of people coming to get food. I know a fellow classmate that attended [no names to be mentioned] was also under the impression that we would be able to converse with the individuals. Although these people where in need of help, I did not encounter one rude individual. All seemed so pleased that they were given a food ration that would last them maybe two weeks if that. There were little kids there playing, some being pushed in strollers, or even walking wanting to carry something. Really showed how far the little things in life go. I could not help but look at the babies and think of my son and how if ever we get to a point where we need help, there is someone someplace willing to help. It was such a great opportunity that I am glad to have embarked on. Even if it was for 3 hours, within those three hours I was able to do something minor to help someone I did not know. That was the most satisfying feeling to have achieved at such a start of my day.

However because I know Professor Hsaio is going to be reading this, I want to share this story of my over dramatic version. I was EXTREMELY displeased with EVERYTHING. Having to wake up to help some people I did not know, then go and know that I was impacting people with a warmth in my heart, blah! Professor Hsaio left us to have fun at Disneyland and did not even bother to bring us along. As we helped out starving we were taunted with the thought of food at this bustling Mexican restaurant that was so delicious. I was in tears of laughter with such happiness it could make one sick of the embarrassing moments of, I will not share names. Not to mention certain people getting swept off their feet with the firefighters that allowed for students to make a fool of themselves on the fire truck. Gosh, Professor Hsaio is so horrible. Never again will I go on such escapades. Hope to see you guys at the last field trip in April. =]. Hardy har Harrr!
