Fall 2009

Freshman Composition
Critical and Argumentative Writing
Blogging in the Blogosphere
English 100 and 103

FORMAT:
When you blog, in the Title, write your first and last name as you would as if you are turning in a paper to me. Then you do not have to write my name because I know you are in my class. Write what English class you are in whether it is English 52, 60, 100 and what College.

For example, one would write:

Yue Hayes
English 103
Cerritos College
Post #1

Homelessness
Font size
In addition, for the title, pick the topic of discussion, grammar/organization, content, current events, pop culture or literature as a TITLE that we have discussed in class. Write the posts like this: write #1 Post or #2 Post or Post #50, so I can easily keep track of them and how many you write.

Of course, you are welcome to write more than several posts, and in doing so is another form of participation and does count in the participation grade. Perhaps, in class, you may not participate all that much but in the realm of the blogosphere, you can from the comfort of your own home,

* reflect on the day's class discussion or offer up an insight that you found particularly interesting, etc., etc.
*

* How does it change the way you think or thought before on the subject?
*

* What actions might you take in the future? Anything is open to interpretation.

Of course, I need not go on and on about being respectful towards your peers' opinions and beliefs. If you disagree with another student's views be discreet about it: Do not say so and so is completely wrong because of this and that. Instead, say, I disagree with so and so and here are the reasons why I do. Go after their evidence and support and do not, I repeat do not attack someone else personally. This is supposed to be a forum for everyone to share their ideas and views.

*I will enforce the blogosphere by either deleting your hard work, making an example out of you here in the realm of the blogosphere or in class* . . .

III. Analysis on Erosion of Civilization

• Essay is warning us that US actions and our rise to power is similar to Iraq’s, decline is possibly imminent
1. We spend money on other countries’ crisis and US efforts have little effect because their crisis is deep-rooted
2. We have our own emergencies that can develop into bigger crisis if we don’t resolve them
3. US influence in inventions, technology, media and politics are modeled as ideal in other countries, giving the US fuel to their fire
4. We are depleting our natural resources to be able to keep up with rising demand in food, fuel etc.
5. There is uneven distribution of wealth and power among the world’s countries; most have to be kept down for others to rise (master and servant effect)
6. When the US begins to decline (economically or in natural resources etc), other countries can uprise against the US (like when Iraq began to lose its resources and surrounding societies invaded, taking advantage of the bruised country)

“Iraq and its neighbors led the world as the source of most things embodied in the term ‘civilization.’ Technology, ideas, and power flowed outward from Iraq to Europe and eventually to America. Iraq’s decline holds lesson the world should heed” (2).

“Even for a country as wealthy as the United States, there is limit to the number of $100 billion interventions we can afford, and there are many alternative uses at home for that money” (12).

Post weirdo!!

Superstition in baseball

Last year when the dodger s where in the postseason, my fiancé did some weird stuff. He was on the couch and the Dodger were losing. Well he said was going to try his luck on the floor. As soon as he sat there the Dodgers made a homerun and said for all the games he will sit on the floor. Well as Dodgers fans know they lost last year to the Phillies.

Well when they played against St Louis Cardinals; he said he will wear his “Los Doyers” shirt because it will bring them luck. They won.

On game 2 the dodgers where losing and then Janelle got a hold of his Dodgers hat. Janelle like a baby she was playing with the hat and then she spit up on it. I laughed and John got a little upset. We walk back to the car, and at that moment John heard on the radio that the Dodgers won. He yelled and scared Janelle and I. He said “I am not washing the hat. The baby’s spit up is Good luck.”

On game 3 we were at his mom’s house and the baby was asleep wrap up in a Dodger blanket. Of course John said they won because she was surrounded by the Dodgers. He is weird.

John is maybe one of the weirdest person I know. The year John was born the Dodgers won the World Series. Well now he hopes because Janelle is here they will win again.

He is a dork. Well I wanted the Giants to play in the post season, but that did not happened. To make John happy I want the Dodgers to win the World Series. Here is hoping.

Sorry Angel’s fans!! Haha ; 0 Michael.

Ever since Mister Hsiao's comment on going bar hopping all the time has resulted on sobriety. I have been sober for over a month now. I have noticed I have more pocket change from not going to bars and paying cover charge at the entrance or $8 on electric lemonades. In which case, I showed up on time on Saturday for the Second Harvest food drive. It felt good to show up and not be buzzed or recovering from a hangover. Ahaha...im not really a drunk this is all a joke...no but on the real the trip to the food drive was awesome. I got to ride with Samantha Sheperd and my friend ROBurrito. The whole time we were following the bus I was texting Kevin every direction we followed. "Exit on Euclid. Make a left. Right on lampson" while dancing to Pop Champagne. I am going to admit that I made an utter fool of myself after Fred's lecture on poverty in Garden Grove and factoring statistics like "80% of elementary students family are below poverty" Once he was through with his imformative lecture and asked with we had any questions on what he spoke about I raised my hand and inquired "How exactly is this precedure going to work out? What are we, how are we going to do this?" I thought it was a perfectly legitimate question. Samantha Sheperd chuckled along with the other 36 people crammed into the windowless room. Now that I think of it...it was an irrelevant question...I felt ditzy instantly after asking the question. On the real though. since I have never done community work in my life, I was oblivious on how this kind of thing was structured. Im just going to leave it at that. It was great though. I sorted out boxes and food and placed them on the table. Placing all the beef stews in one box and the all the spagetti with meat sauce in another box (which was a waste of time the fact that we bagged them up mixing the types of food) Afterward, I helped Roburrito count veggies into bags with Brian and Samantha. From there , there was nothing else to do. Everything was in order and people were lining up. Fred did not explain what to after we're done unpacking everthing. I guess its common sense, right? I lacked my common sense this weekend. I was congested and constantly pulling out tissue from my pocket, okay? Gee...ahaha no but after Samantha suggested that we should play with the kids reason being is because they were playing on a skate ramp without any supervision. Samantha was the leader and i just followed because i have no kid experience. I wouldnt know what to say to kid. "Hey kid, what do you think about the recession? Nothing huh? Any good books lately?" I suck talking to kids. I just followed Sam's lead and enjoyed playing Duck, Duck, goose...freeze tags (this one girl got way excited and slapped me across the face to the point were my glasses slightly slid off my face) red light green light, hokey pokey and what not. Before i knew it the food was gone and the people were packing the rest of their boxes into their car. We took a picture next to the left over towering boxes (which i still think we should have built a bridge and not an easy tower) ate at los sanchez...which was a whole lot snazzier then whittier...there was this one guy at los sanchez calling out the order through the mike with his incredibly aweful deep voice that made me giggle at a constant...you had to be there. I had to ride on the bus back because Samantha Sheperd had to leave early for work. the bus was nice though as it always is. i had a good time and i feel great at the fact that i can say "yes, i have done community work before"

 People have rights.
 The dream became a reality.
 People have changed.
 No more dividing of races.
 Freedom of speech. /people free to speak what they want.
 Accomplishments made.
 Friendships made.
 War over blacks and whites defeated/ almost still today we sometimes have certain problems.
 Over the years special movements have happened.
Barack Obama
 First black president/because of MLK’s right movement towards blacks.
 Change is still progressing.
 More change yet to come.
 Too soon to tell what change will be accomplished.
 Unity progressing more and more.
b) Will it change?

The Erosion of Civilization (3th body paragraph)

First world countries could help third world countries in need in many different ways

1. It can provide humanitarian aid once the crisis has arisen
2. It can ignore the situation and then intervene military
3. It can interne before the crisis starts

“The most effective and least expensive approach would be to help Third World countries solve their basic environmental and public health problems before they cripple societies. The cost of global programs to combat AIDS, is estimated by public health organizations at about $25 billion or one quarter the cost of a single military intervention.” (13)

“Preventing chaos abroad benefits the United States.” (14)

“Even for a country as wealthy as USA, there is a limit to the number of $100 billion interventions we can afford, and there are many alternatives used at home for that money-improving our schools, say, or fixing Social Security or establishing universal health insurance.” (12)

I am not going to lie to you Mr. Hsiao, i have not thought about posting on my third body paragraph... It flew off my mind... But here i am doing my post, everything from the top of my head...

My third body paragraph I am going to have to choose MLK's speech because it has been down in history as to one of the most powerful speeches in the world... I love history to the point were i start thinking that if it was not for one person speaking to the world and making a difference, the world would not be where it is now...

I do think that the world has changed but there is still many stereotpes towards black people... I for one, i know, i have point the finger to them... I have had very bad experience towards black people wich gets me to stereotype them and hate them... Sorry but that is how i am and because of my exepriences... Anyways, i have great respect for the King family that i have to give them props for what MLK did... This reminds me of Cesar Chavez... I wish that in class we could talk more about people that spoke because they wanted to make a difference and their voices heard... I have gone to the Cesar Chavez walk, and i take it as i am part of history in the making... Well, this is a part of what my body paragrpah 3 is going to be about... i just have to really think and study and go over the speeches...

Second Harvest Food Drive
Where do I start? Well I believe from the beginning makes sense.. It started early morning when I arrived at Cerritos campus at 7:02. I took a detour to get my hot hazelnut with a dash of cinnamon coffee from 7 eleven in my Domo cup for only 99 cent’s. I bought these pastries called Zingers which I discovered them on Friday. Sarai could not get enough of them throughout the trip, well she kept offering them to everyone, and I was surprised she didn’t offer the bus driver. I will get into more detail of the Zinger craze Sarai had later. We didn’t do departure until 8 due to one of the students that locked his keys in his car, thanks to Police campus that jimmied it, also Yessica and her friend that called them credit to Brian who kept trying to open it. On arriving the church we were welcomed inside to enter a tiny room where Fred gave us a structure of who they were as a community and the outreach towards them.

LuLu24 said...

continued..

After, we exit the church and walked to the parking lot in the back of the church. A young lady came with stickers to write our names. Followed by this older lady named Pat approached the circle and started talking to Brian, Yessica, Sarai plus me. She was very funny, filled with energy gave me a hype, later we discussed amongst us that she must be one cool a** grandma.
I walked over more into depth of the parking lot, while we were expecting trucks I made conversation with Jon who kept calling me boss and suggested we trade places. I asked him for his Blue tooth to look more like a “boss”, but he said it was attached to his ear. Very funny guy, as soon as the truck unloaded the pallets of food I felt I was in my previous job ;I used to work at Linens N Things were we unloaded and opened boxes of merchandise, but this time it was food. My sense of direction was high and felt I started being bossy so I had to tone it down. The food was organized by sections, when the salad section formed me and a gentleman from the church Carl teamed up to count the boxes. He came up with 57 I came up with 62 so we agreed to 60. Once all vegetables and food were separated into the tables, the families came outside the church with a ticket, we formed 2 helper lines, a boy line and a girl I was the first one in the girl line. Then we mixed up the line we didn’t want to be sexist. The first lady I helped was an older lady by the name of Bertha she was very grateful for the food drive and thanked me for walking her, the second lady I helped was there with her mother, they were from Argentina I joked with them about making "caldo de pollo" a chicken soup that contains squash, potatoes, cabbage and chicken. The last family I helped was a very touching story they had recently moved from Riverside and were new to the city; they said it was a miracle to find this church containing wonderful people they had met and encountering the food drive. They were appreciative of our help and the churches. I placed the box full of food in their trunk of their car and thanked me also called a fine young lady. I felt joyful to see and share the moment.
When the families drove off everyone from the church and students cleared up the tables, we took a picture at our leaning tower of cardboard creation which kept getting knocked down and rebuilt. Then after gathered up to a circle; some students spoke about their experience and we did a prayer. At that time it was our turn to eat, the bus driver took us to this Mexican restaurant called Sanchez. I saw the workers looked worried when they saw a bunch of teenagers coming off the bus. I think Brian said they were preparing for a war; we got through the line really quick. I was really hungry so I ordered a chorizo con huevo burrito, that burrito was no joke I only ate half, I felt I was in México those burritos are colossal; the other half I took home. On the way back to school partial of the students fell asleep and Sarai still offered Zingers (which nobody took because everyone was full.) In end I am grateful I got to experience this and will plan to go back in the future. This was a small seed that harvested in my heart as I will treasure forever

Is Obama the fruition of MLK's "dream"?

III. Obama is not the realization.

A. MLK dream encompassed more than "black" civil rights.
-1. Religion/ALL men
-2. Content of character rather than race
-3. Desperation clouding judgement

B. Religion is not unified
-1. Middle Eastern conflict unsettled
-2. Christian U.S. vs Muslim Radicals

C. Obama has not been judged on content of character; color of skin still at play
-1. Proof of character vs social fluidity/age and power of oration
--a. Lack of concrete experience/proof
--b. Wordsmith
--c. Hollywood influence/the "cool thing to do"
-2. Focus on the issue of Obama's ethnicity
--a. Possibility of a guilty "white" conscience/retribution/the "black friend"
--b. Blacks who support "black"
--c. People want to "make/see history"

D. Recession and malcontent bring about wavering judgement
-1. Promise of change relies on malcontent
-2. Depression clings to promises/words of hope and inspiration

E. Progress, but not the climax

I might have to sit down and give this some revision before Wednesday, but hopefully you get the idea. ;]

Reflection on the Food Drive
Starting the day off at 6:30 in the morning was hard for me because I am not a morning person at all, but I knew it was for a good cause so I got myself up early. When I got to the school I saw the bus and I just wanted to get on the bus and take a nice little nap. I saw Edilu and we walked to the bus, but Mr. Hsiao was not there. We waited and when he got there I was looking forward to getting my nap on, but there was another incident before we got on the bus. One of the guys had locked his keys in his car with the radio on, so we had to call the campus police and get his keys out so his battery would not run out. We finally were on our way and I was looking forward to my nap, but it did not happen. While we were waiting for the guy to open his car, Edilu, Yessica, Brian and I were talking and it continued unto the bus so I did not get my nap. As we were talking Edilu gave me some Zingers. I had no earthly clue what that was and I was curious. I had one and it was so delicious that now I am an addict. When we got to the church we were all squeezed into a small room where Fred gave us a run down on what our job was going to be for the day. I was excited to see how this would all play out. When we were done with the little meeting, we all went outside to wait for the trucks of food to get there. As we waited, a girl was coming around with a clipboard and having us put nametags on. It was funny to see what funny things people put on theirs. Someone had Mr. Awesome and Brian instead of just putting Brian; made his a little interesting and put “hello my name is…Brian”. After we got

our nametags, an older lady came up to us and started talking. Her name was Pat and she was really funny. She was really nice and very outgoing. She had so much energy for it being around 8 or 9 in the morning because Lord knows I was tired. After a while of talking we saw the trucks drive into the church. As we walked to the trucks I heard one of the church people say that they were surprised that there was 2 trucks because they usually only get one. We started unloading the trucks and fixing all the food onto the tables that were set up for us. Because there was so many of us, the process did not take long. I heard the church people say that they were happy to see us moving so fast. While we waited for some people to finish fixing some of the food, Edilu and I began to talk to one of the ladies from the church. She was telling us how happy she was to have us there because of all the food they were giving today. She told us that there had been a harvest and that there was extra food that was going to be given to 2nd harvest. She said it was an amazing thing that we were there because there was going to be twice the food and they were going to need twice the help. When it was finally time to give the people the food, were all given jobs. I was going to be helping the people carry the boxes that were given to them to their cars. As I got to the first person I was going to help, I noticed that she had a baby in her carriage. She only spoke Spanish, and at that time I was happy I was bilingual so I could talk to her and not just stand there in silence. I asked her how old her baby was and where she was from. She said that her baby was 4 months and that she was from nearby. She was so happy and thankful for all that the church was doing to help her out. I was so happy to have been able to be a part of that. I was touched to see how many people were blessed by what the people at the church were doing. I had done that before and it never gets old to see the people’s faces as they are being blessed. When we were done we all gathered in a circle in the middle of the basketball court we had been on. The pastor thanked us for going, but I felt like telling him thanks for giving us the opportunity to come and help them bless people. It gives you such a good feeling when you know you are doing something nice for someone. When we were leaving, all you heard us talking about on the way to the bus was how hungry we were. We were all looking forward to going to eat. When we got to Los Sanchez, I did not care what I ate I was so hungry. I ordered a burrito and enjoyed it. I was sitting with Yessica, Brian and Edilu and it was pretty quiet as we all ate. When we were done I had remembered that I had a zingers, left over from earlier that day. I did not want it anymore because I was too full so I was trying to give it away to people but everyone was too full. I offered it and no one wanted it so I ended up taking it home and giving it to my younger sister who enjoyed it. On our way back to school the bus was, for the most part quiet, as mostly everyone was taking a little nap. It was a good feeling seeing the good in everyone that was there. It made me feel good that the small thing that I was doing was going such a long way for other people and making their day a little but better.

I woke up Saturday morning at five o’clock. I was excited about the field trip. I felt anxious to use my time to do something good for someone. On my way driving to Cerritos I spent a few minutes in prayer. I prayed that my time be used to bless someone and that they would somehow be able to see God’s love through me. After the short bus trip to Garden Grove I was surprised to pull up to a church. It made me smile. Because it was a school outing, I assumed it was going to be at a park or community center. When the two trucks pulled up from Second Harvest food bank I was more than ready to be put to work. I was surprised to see what we were unloading. I thought there would be tons of canned foods. As bad as it may sound, I even expected poor quality canned goods. I thought there would be a lot of the donated goods that people give when they rummage through their cupboards. To my surprise there was nice looking fresh produce: potatoes, tomatoes, zucchini, squash, cantaloupe, coconuts, mushrooms, lettuce. Seeing this got me even more excited. It was awesome to see how fast things come together when people work as a team. We may have been bagging and organizing for 2 hours or so, but it only seemed like one. As I bagged potatoes, I heard the pastor of the church talking to a volunteer saying that last time they had over 250 families waiting to get food. As sad as it was to think that there were so many families in need, it made me feel even better to be a part of helping the get the food they so badly needed. Then the moment came. They began to line up. I believe that the elders got priority in the line. They gave their ticket, received a box and began through the line. Some came in a wheelchair, some brought a wagon, and others had strollers to put the food in. For those who had nothing but a box and maybe a child in hand, we were there to help. I myself carried at least six boxes of food for different families. Of the families I carried for, none could speak enough English to converse with, but they all expressed their thanks and smiled with gratitude when I loaded the food in their cars. My arm muscles began to stiffen and shake by the time I unloaded the last box. It was great! Some families were even able to get second and thirds of whatever was left over. At the end we all cleaned up and then met up for a word of prayer. I bowed my head and smiled; my prayer had already been answered. There is nothing more rewarding than being used to do God’s work.

Second Harvest Food Drive

This event was great. We were able to help over two hundred families get food in their homes. Not only were we able to get extra credit, but we also got to see life outside of our own. I know the first few times I worked with the poor and/or homeless, my eyes were opened. Even in our own backyads, people are living in the streets. If it weren't for events like these and programs through churches, maybe even more people would be homeless. I find it very important to give at least something back to the community. The prayer circle at the end was very uplifting. I'm not sure how comfortable the other students were, but I was very much at ease. The amount of selflessness that is displayed gives me hope that there still are good people in this world. It was a great experience to hear how they felt about their service. I enjoyed watching how happy the kids were. You could see stress and pain in some of the families' eyes, but never in the childrens'. I am glad we were able to help people, as it also helped some of us students. All in all, it was a great trip. Thank you again Mr. Hsiao. you always lead us on such great excursions.

Paragraph 3 Erosion of Civilization
* No country, no matter how wealthy, or civilized, or powerful is immune to damages. Every empire has an expiration date, because the dynamics of the world are ever-changing.
- The US can help other regions, by giving aid earlier rather than later.
-however this is unlikely to go over well with the American public, because we have our own problems to focus on.
The resources and finances of the US are depleting, and we can afford to be involved in the erosion of every civilization.

Food Drive Reflection
I think this is a very good opportunity for me to do some “good deed for others”. According to Frankl, in Man Search for Meaning, he mentions that: “One would obtain happiness by loving others more than his or herself” (have no idea which paragraphs it is). This means one should go out and help people in order to be happy. I really did it this time. Since I wrote a paper about Man search for meaning for Mr. Hsiao‘s class last semester, I did not really help anyone besides my family member. Also, I got a good topic to write about personal paper for my psychology class. So, this is how I gain happiness. I think Fred’s speech was really good too. He was cheerful, funny and a real college professor. This was the first time that I actually followed someone’s speech outside the campus. I did not know that there are people called themselves “homeless” but did not choose to live a better life even if we give them an apartment or a job though. Talking with “a very interesting light pole” was a good one too. The speech reminded me of one the one reading we discussed in class, the Sa… (Truth-force). Again, I got to see a real demonstration of how religion helps us change from a negative person to a good person. Helping others really makes me feel like I am becoming a better person every day. During the handing out food, I was a little nervous. My job was to stand inside loading the chili bag from the ground to the desk. But there weren’t many chili bags so I finished quickly and watched other handing out the food. The reason I got nervous was Mr. Hsiao kept going (or supervising) around to see his lovely students how they are doing their “good deeds”. Then I saw he going around the 2nd time, quietly walking, smiling, thinking (Good job! Good job! Maybe?). At that time, I really ran out of chili bag to load. I stood there, tried to do something with the Coconuts next to me and prayed too (.Nooooo don’t spot me …). so that Mr. H won’t see through my suspicious behavior Good! He did not see me. He walked away, kept smiling. Thank you my coconuts!(but why coconut anyways lolz)

Third paragraph

I have looked into many history books to find an answer that plays over and over in head, for I ask what make America great. The answer can be found in many places, yet one must look around at the others around them. America is a great and powerful place that anyone can chase a dream, and that dream is called the American dream. One person can make a change, or a difference in the world, yet many do not know how to relay this power. The one man that has been able to make a change that shifted the American way. One man has changed the course of this nation for many years after his death. This man was a very power full speaker, for one must when he was fighting for a huge cause. This great American is known as martin Luther king JR. after president Obama was elected I have heard that his ingurgal speech being compared to Dr kings I have a dream speech. I not born when Dr. King gave the moving I have a dream speech, but I did witness the Obama speech. Dr. Kings speech has a greater impact or the listener then Obama speech. The president took on a lot of weight as he place his right hand on the Bible his speech was very well scripted by a great speech writer. As I watched the historic speech I was bored as he went on to sates that America is going to change, yet I do not see any to much change except that now Americans will be paying more ,and more taxes. The speech had little effect when compared to the I have a dream speech . I have seen the film from start to finish during the speech one is gripped by the range of motion that Dr. King conveys to all Americans. Dr. King is speaking about an issue, civil right for blacks that he lost his life for the cause. There is true emotion coming from the heart, or the soul while he is delivering this earthmoving speech. one must have thought at the time I will never witness a event as powerful again during my lifetime. The Obama speech was not a earth moving for me I felt like it was a pep talk before a high school football game. Talking Is a motivation, but it take action and presentence to move forward. The most powerful line that is used in Dr. kings I have a dream speech is “And even though we face the difficulties of today… I still have a dream \... it is a dream deeply rooted in America.(16). Dr. King is talking about how American have always fought for a dream, yet never gave up no matter how hard. The difficulties of today have already taken place in the past, for as we as a country have moved forward from the past we must move forward to the present. Dr. King is telling America that we as one accomplish all that stands in our way, but we can not fail we must always look toward the future.

Reflection
This past Saturday I helped out at the Second Harvest Food Drive. I have done community service before and I loved it, so I was excited to be going. The day started out very early. I woke up way to early and probably could have slept in longer. Once I arrived at the school I wanted to get on the bus right away but a little mix up, with keys getting locked in a car still running happened. When we arrived at the church we packed into a small room and learned about the type of people we would be helping out that day, and the way we would go about getting our task done.
We walked out to the back of the church to begin our work. Luckily our huge group came to help that day because two trucks of food arrived, something that had never happened before. We waited for the truck driver to unload all the pallets of fresh fruits and vegetables. Then we went to work counting and bagging each piece of food. There was so much food but the whole group working together made it look all too easy. Once everything was counted, bagged and put in the right place, the families began to come out. We helped them carry their food as we walked around the tables and to their cars. Every person once they got through the line had the biggest smiles on their face and were ecstatic to have a box full of free fresh food to take home. It gave me a good feeling to know I had assisted in people getting to eat that night and for a few there after.
After the food drive I knew I wanted to go back. I love serving food and helping the less fortunate. These kinds of activities make me step back and realize how much I really do have even when I think I need more. I have a lot of respect and appreciation for those less fortunate, who work and do their best to make ends meet. At the end we all stood in a circle and shared thought about the day, and Danielle told a story about a girl who did not know how to speak English. This little girl asked people around her how to say thank you in Spanish, and when she figured it out she went and said thank you to Danielle. When I heard this story I began to tear up. We had done just a little thing that day but it meant a huge deal and made a big difference for all of those families that walked through the line that day.

Homework..

So much has been accomplished since Martin Luther King Jr. gave one of the most powerful and moving speeches at a large rally located in Washington DC. Now not only are blacks able to ride in the front of the city, but they are able to vote and hold office in the United States government. I think if Martin Luther King Jr. was still alive when President Barack Obama was chosen to be president he would have been so proud. Proud is not even the right description. I think that Martin Luther King Jr. would be astonished but baffled at the same time. I think this would be a time when the world would see a grown man cry happy tears. As we all know the United States is known as the melting pot. The United States is the melting pot of all different countries coming to America to experience our freedoms to escape inequality. But one can only think will equality really ever exist? Have we, people of America, just pushed the angst and hatred to another race? In Martin Luther King Jr.’s I Have A Dream speech he strong stated, “And even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow. I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream” (paragraph 16). I think that this is the why America is the melting pot. Everyone wasn’t to have the ability of making their own decisions, and being able to be equal like all human beings should be. Even though coming to America is hard at first the outcome is much more rewarding. Although one can only question if the racism has moved from one race to another? Sadly I think that this world can never have world peace because there is always going to be that one person who goes against the crowd, in the wrong way. Until we, as human beings, can accept one another for not what is on the outside but on the inside there will never be ‘change’.

Second Harvest Food Drive

I really enjoyed this field trip a lot because we got to work with a community. I like wake up early on a Saturday every year or so just do honest work. We helped unload and unpackaged all the food that was delivered. We then moved at bagged everything. After everything was set up we helped all the people carry their stuff to their car. That was pretty awesome, when we got to the end and dropped off the box of food at their car. No one really spoke English who I helped but just that last smile they gave me before I went to help someone else was enough said. This was my first time working at a food drive and hopefully not my last. The things that also got to me were that this place was just in Garden Grove off Lampson. These people needed much help and they are just in our backyards. It made me realize how much people need help within our own community, even if we do not see it. After everyone had a box of food they were allowed to get back in line. I overheard a lady say how she was going to get another one for her sister. It was so sincere, I like felt in her face and her voice how she knew her sister needed as much help as she did. To wake up so early in the morning with your kids is tough and these people did just for some help, have some relief in their lives. We all went home with a lot more than we showed up with. My only regret is not kicking over that box tower the first time.

Second Harvest Food Drive
On Saturday, October 10, 2009, I was given an amazing opportunity to volunteer and help others that needed it. As a class, Prof. Hsiao guided us on a journey that will forever change my outlook on helping others. At 7:30 in the morning, we loaded onto a huge bus and drove to this small Baptist Church where we were greeted with friendly faces and warm greetings. We had a small pep talk prior to getting to work and being a not so religious person, that part was not very interesting to me. However, once we walked outside and each got our name tags, we started to begin the waiting process. It is a catch 22 on when the trucks will come but once they did, you thought a bomb went off. Normally, the church gets only one truck but on this specific day, a miracle happened; two fully loaded trucks came with over 6,000 pounds of food. Once the men started to unload the trucks, our class and other volunteers got to work. We had to organize all the food and bag it which wasn’t so bad since everyone had to bring 10 grocery bags. Once everything was organized and pretty much bagged, we took our places and the families began pouring out of the church. Most to all of these families were in need of some sort of help and that is what we gave them. You had your carriers that carried the boxes for people that couldn’t co it themselves, you had your givers which gave the food to the people to put in a box the carrier was holding, and then you had your random people helping wherever needed whether it be giving out boxes, helping the line run smother, telling the carriers where to go and who to help. It was the most organized food drive I have ever seen. After everyone was gone, we cleaned up and got together for a short prayer and to receive gratitude from all those who went to the church. Something so small and so unselfish, was very well appreciated by all those who needed our help. I will never ever forget the little girl who spoke no English at all and wanted to say thank you, so she asked one of the other volunteers and figured out how to say it. When she did, she ran back over to me, gave me a big hug, and said thank you in English. That touched my heart deeply and for someone who is going through hard times herself, it was well worth it giving up my time to help others that are always in need. I will take a lot away from this experience and will always remember that sweet little girl.

Second Harvest Food Drive
First of all, it was very difficult waking up in the morning on Saturday. I did not heed Professor Hsiao’s warnings about not going out late, and did the exact opposite. The things a guy does for a girl, right? Anyways, when we first arrived to the church, I was a little skeptical because of the size. I thought, “Oh man, this is smaller then I thought. We must be donating food to like 20 people or something.” Then we walked inside, and that’s when I noticed it was a much larger church then I expected. Looking around, I first noticed children playing around with a basketball and soccer ball. This was very pleasant to see, and such a great relief to be reminded of what we were doing this for. We were doing this for families less fortunate than us. These children probably had no idea what was going on, and seemed so innocent and happy just playing around with an inflated piece of plastic. To remain so joyful in such a situation is truly a blessing.
We then came into a room for a little orientation, and the guy who spoke to us (I can’t remember him) was a happy-go fellow, who was just delightful to listen to. To help people off their feet, so that they will eventually better themselves was the message I received from the orientation. After this, we jumped outside and started helping out everywhere we were needed. It was nice seeing people working together, with a sense of unity, and with such smiles on their faces from the church and our class, the job could not have been more pleasant. There was so much food people donated. I was really surprised to see such fresh vegetables. When everybody came out, it was refreshing to see their faces. I do not even think I have seen that much food in one place in my lifetime. When we started helping people picking up food and taking it to their cars, they were so grateful. They were polite and always said thank you, including to the people that were giving out the food. It was a good feeling. In the end, we were in a circle praying. Even though I am Buddhist, I felt we were all one in a sense that we all did a good thing today.

Thank god the job is only seasonal and it ends in 3 weeks. Oh well i made a mistake and now i know i am not gonna do that again. Math will just have to wait for next semester. It sucks because i'm not use to calling quits. I feel really disappointed with myself.

okay i was going to say this in class BUT since we got the second half of our midterm today i wont be able to SO i am going to blog about it:

okay i leave my house early to drive by starbucks so i can order my iced nonfat caramel macchiato before school right? so im eating my toasted jam sandwich cut into 4 triangles in my car waiting for the left arrow light to turn green on lakewood and telegraph. if any one is familiar with that location (i doubt) i was across from pepe's mexican food...there was so much traffic that the black honda suv behind me was trying to make a left through the short cut by pepe's..."that car better not bump my bumber" i thought to myself he was way close to me...ANYWAY i was listening to the kevin and bean show and they brought up the fact that jessica simpson lost her dog daisy (apparently this wolf took it from her or something...??)the thing is was the jessica twitered, twitter? jessica twittered "help me find my dog" or whatever so shes been getting false phone calls from strangers that they had found her little dog daisy...so kevin and bean are still cracking jokes about it and i hear a dog get hit like a loud moan of pain and i was like "man that sucks kevin and bean took it too far" but i felt panic for some reason and was like "was that real?" i looked at my rear view mirror and a noticed that the black suv honda made a dramatic stop, lingered for a while and made the left hand turn into the short cut "bastard" i said and so im still thinking about that dogs moan because keving and bean didnt respond to it and all of the sudden i saw this mix sheppard limping its right paw aimlessly through traffic...it sat pittiful 10 feet from my car trying to cure itself i was like "oh my goodness...its hurt what should i do? is it going to stay there? its raining and theres mad traffic" it just sat there for what seemed to be a long while and all these thought ran through my head. i was shut off i had no idea what to do...just like it suddenly appeared it suddenly vanished from my sight...i had no clue where it went. at this poing the left arrow was green and i was at the drive thru at starbucks so i texted my mom about it...i was thinking of calling seaaca but i didnt have the number...my mom responded saying to be calm and call the police they'll know what to do...i never made the phone call i didnt have the car who hit the dogs license plate nor did i really see the car hit the dog...man i felt so helpless...

Here's to essay one

Well I must of deserved a C- on my essay or I would not have been given that grade. Though I'm not happy about. I have excepeted it. I felt like I followed the direction on the sylabus pretty good. So I'm still trying to figure out what was so bad about it. I followed my classmates suggestions and wrote about me. I was not told, nor did it say anywhere that it was to be a comparrison and contrast essay, if I had talked about Allegory of the Cave more than it would have been just that. I read Allegory and wrote an essay about my own life in relations to what I felt was my cave. So I don't see how a few typeing errors got me a c-. I just hope I get the chance to revise my essay and take my grade up.

Priscilla, I know where you were at, I love around there.

Well the only thing you can do when some hit a dog is call the Downey police station or animal shelter, but who has those number.

I used to have the numbers. Let me explain why, dogs far and wide that wanted to commit suicide would always find my mom. When she droves us to school, I was about 16 that year she made have hit like 8 dogs. It sounds like my mom is terrible person, but really she was never able to avoid them. The first time this happened we called the cops then they told us to call the animal shelter and station in the city you’re in.

Do not feel helpless. Your sad that, that happened to the dog. Let hope the dog was ok.

I have no idea how I did on the first part of the midterm. And I had a history midterm today as well, and in a few minutes I'll be on my way to do the second part of English midterm. Anyway, this has been a crazy week! All kinds of emotions have happened. I told my parents I am pregnant on Friday, and though they were upset, they took it better than I thought they would. Then Saturday we did the Food Drive, and Saturday night my family had 5 birthday parties in one (including mine) where I told my cousins that my boyfriend and I will be having a baby. They were shocked/surprised/happy and everything in between. On Sunday all I did was study study study for this week. On Monday my 2 year old's dad text me that he was about to board the plane, leaving the US for Iraq, right before the English midterm. Tuesday I took my brother to court because he had a warrant, and I managed to study during this whole thing and after court. So today I just finished my history midterm and I'm on my way to the second part of the English midterm. Agh! It's tiring just writing everything out! At least its my birthday tomorrow and I get to see Toy Stories in 3D!

Priscilla, I can totally relate to what you were probably going through with the dog!! and yes, I know where you were at, lol... I live in Pico. One day when I was driving down Washington just about to go over the riverbed to get to the 605 a van in front of me hit a dog!! I was so worried about the dog, I saw him get hit, spin on his side across to the other side of the street, and then the crazy dog got up and ran off!! I was in shock!! I'm just glad I got to see the dog get up, though I have no clue what happened after that!

Jenny, my mom used to be like your mom, but she hit birds, a lot of birds! The one time she hit a dog she freaked out! She said she was so shaken up and scared that she flagged down a cop who was driving by and was crying to him telling him what happened! I was laughing at my mom's description of how she was!! She did say that the dog was fine, and nothing happened to her, thank goodness!

Finally, I love the rain!!!! I just wish I could stay in and wrap up in a nice warm blanket and watch a movie or catch up on some of my t.v. shows!!

Erica:

A flamethrower, while certainly entertaining, causes far too much collateral damage. Microwaves, on the other hand, are able to refine that collateral damage to a definite point. Due to the properties of a microwave, such as being enclosed on all sides, it provides ample exploditude upon detonation. Also, bananas are well suited to exploding, considering the juxtaposition of both color and flammable materials inside.

I must say, there is nothing more satisfying than blowing the microwave door off and...785trn biu7654rftv5gb.

I am not too sure what has happened this semester, I feel like I have been out of it, and that it was a continuation of summer where my job and my family problems have run my life. Work problems have now been taken care of.Home problems still exist which revolve around my cave, my father.

This week has been one of ups and downs, and I had to do something. Thursday I apologize but I had woken up late and knew I could not make it in time for the observations. Over the weekend I had finally gotten the guts to talk back to my dad and challenge his stupid ideas that I am supposed to praise. An argument ensued and I was thrown out of the house for 2 days. That was sunday night... I did not have my backpack with me or any school stuff and I didnt want to bother any friends so I went to a local place and slept in my car, during the day I found things to do. I could not go to my girlfriend because early last week we agreed to have some time apart (which I know is never a good sign.....) so that we could focus on school and other things we needed to accomplish in our lives.

I know I have fallen behind.... far behind.... but most of my outside stresses have been put off for the time being in order to concentrate and I am willing to put in the work to play catch up..... I will see you all in 5 hours.

$6,000 dollars and a dalai lama:

Disclaimer:
This post is in no way intended to spite, or give a digital "i told you so". I merely want to clarify a point about the dalai lama that has otherwise been taken as off topic. No disrespect. to ANYONE.

In his open heart section, the dalai lama states: "I think that it is wrong to expect that our problems can be solved by money or material benefit." Indeed, the greater problems in life that we face cannot be squelched by a mountain of greenbacks and some gold trinkets. But then, why then does the Dalai lama state: "may the poor find wealth"?

We can all agree, and so does he, that some money is necessary to sustain life in this 21st century society. But The dalai Lama offered a prayer of WEALTH to the poor. What is wealth? In this context he must mean money, because all other aspects are addressed in the rest of his prayer. Here lies my point. We cannot all be wealthy. I will define wealth simply: The ability to aquire far beyond what one needs.

Assume all the poor find wealth-and since the only way they can aquire that wealth in a world of finite resources is to have someone elses wealth-assume all wealth is distributed to the poor. Now all are wealthy right? no. divided equally, each individual would receive $6,000. Now the challenge is to live off 6,000 in america. Rent around here, with a room mate will be 500 for your share. 500x12=2,400. utilities 50x12=600. food, gas, car bill, insurance, clothes, school, what if I get sick? what about taxes? This is where the 6,000 figure comes in. When talking about the world, Wealth for all is not viable.

I Threw It! said...

But that is another point: what is enough? I could not sustain on 6000 and i dont consider myself a wealthy guy. What of those with only 2000 a year? what of the poor and destitute? Who has those answers? I will quote what i will leave an anonymous play: "if all were so easy, none would suffer in this world."

Revised Body 1

A significant experience I underwent in one dealing with mixed marital arts. Just for those who do not know what MMA is, here is its definition. “Mixed martial arts (MMA) is a full contact combat sport that allows a wide variety of fighting techniques, from a mixture of martial arts traditions and non-traditions, to be used in competitions. The rules allow the use of striking and grappling techniques, both while standing and on the ground. Such competitions allow martial artists of different background to compete.” (wikepedia.org) Ever since I was a child, I have loved mixed marital arts in which I came across some difficult challenges’ in my life because of it. I always felt like something in my life was missing because I was never able to participate in any violent or dangerous sports. I discussed this issue countless times with my father and mother in why I could not participate in MMA. Their unchanged answer always cut my heart! My father yelled at me “Brian I said no, you know you cannot do that! You will get hurt!” My fathers reply was always “You are going to get your ass beat,” with a little laugh in the end. He made it seem like I would not amount to anything. I always asked myself maybe they were right but how did they know that? They did not feel this burning passion for the sport I admired. At this time I was around the age of fifteen. I did not have a job in order to pay for lessons myself but knew I would have to wait. Two years passed which felt like forever before acquiring a job. It was not the very best job in the world but working at Jack in the box was still something to pay certain bills. My first pay check quickly went to MMA classes. Deliberately knowing my parents would disagree on the choice I have made for myself, I still took that risk. During this time my brother and sister both participated in sports. My brother enjoyed basketball and my sister loved volleyball. In my family both of my sibling’s were supported on their decisions which were sports they still love till this day. I found that my parents never did support me on my decision nor did I care. I wanted to do something that was going to make me happy regardless of the risks. Just the way people enjoy going to the beach is how I would enjoy going to my MMA classes. After four years passed by I began to compete. There were precautions I required in order to lessen the chance to break body parts. For my legs I would hit heavy bags to toughen up the bones on my shins. Same went for my arms, knees and elbows. My trainer was giving me my first fight which was the best and worst feeling in the world. The feeling of doing it was great but fighting in front of people was nerve wrecking. Sadly, my first fight ended with a loss and everything just dropped. My pride was damaged thinking about what my parents had said to me rang in my head over and over. Feeling depressed and beat I still had to face my parents and the humiliation I was going to receive. In Allegory of the Cave by Plato,he states, “Here they have been from their childhood, and have their legs and necks chained so that they cannot move. (1)” This was true, I could not do what I wanted since my childhood and felt like I was chained down by my parents. I never had the support I wanted from them and was pretty much alone in that area. I discovered that in life not everyone will agree on choices people decide nor should it stop anyone from reaching their goals at any cost. For in life there will be situations in which one will have to take alone, through its harsh conditions and its great ones. I even continued fighting and pushed myself which lead me to compete again. This time the outcome was different. I then had a second fight that ended with a knockout punch to the body. Not long I had a third fight which lead to a judge decision victory. Now, very determined I look for another fight in December for yet another victory.

Midterms & Paper 1 Results

I am so glad the midterm came and went. It was a lot to endure the week before my birthday. I am hoping I did well, but I am not expecting an A++. My eyes have opened alot since I have been in this class. I am noticing new things all around me. I am actually listening to the lyrics in songs, rather than just the beats. I am ashamed to say that I did not know any of these things sooner. I am going to be 28 years old tomorrow. I feel like such an old lady! I have now realized that I am not a little girl anymore and I have to step up and face reality. I feel like Peter Pan and his not wanting to ever grow up. But, we have to grow up sometime. The grade I got on Paper 1 was satisfying, but I know I can do better next time. If not, I will accept my defeat.

Its Friday YAY!I just had a battle with traffic, not so fun working in L.A. But on the way to work I was listening to KIIS and there is all this commotion about the balloon boy being a hoax. Apparently he came out in CNN for an interview with his parents last night, and when his dad asked him why didn't he answer when he was calling him, the little boy said" we did this for the show." I don't know what to believe, its a possibility that it may be a hoax, but why would people put themselves out there like that? Or their kids to call attention? I don't have any children but I was hearing all the callers which were mothers. They were upset, some were crying in rage, that startled me up with them. Eventually the truth will come out, just hope its a not a hoax. What do you guys think?

Well that is the LuLu thought of the day and will also want to wish Monique a Happy birthday! Enjoy and just fly like peter pan! lol

Getty Villa
The Getty Villa museum was a great experience that a range of my class mates sadly were unable to make it. I am sure they would have liked the beauty of this museum and its statues from the ancient times. The day started by me getting ready for the trip but before that I wanted to say something amusing that happened before I even got prepared. So upon awaking up, I thought we were suppose to meet up at seven am and I ended up setting up my alarm clock to wake up at six thirty in the morning. My alarm clock never rang so I woke up at seven thirty. Mad and angry I told myself off because I had taken the day off for work and thought I’ll missed the trip. I ended up getting ready for work instead but before leaving to work I checked for homework and a piece of paper fell out from one of the books. I remembered that same paper was placed in there to remind me of the trip and it read “Getty Villa Oct 16 nine am,” I started to laugh at myself. I was so concerned that I missed the trip but was relieved that I did not. So that was my funny story. Not everyone laugh at one time…..I know it was not that funny. Upon arriving I saw a few new faces plus also some of my class mates. John Carlos, Sam (aka Samantha), Oscar, and another hand full of people were all going to the trip. We ended up getting an inexperience bus driver for the ride felt more like a roller coaster than a simple bus ride. I will tell you more about that later. We all ended up going to Alondra Hot Wings which was pretty cool. Sam, Seli, John Carlos, and I ended up getting 25wings for the whole group. Oscar had some chicken wings and fries on the side which I ate a bit of it. Samantha and I came into Alondra Hot Wings with so much energy which someone had to get the party started. She accused me of leaving her alone in the bus from the start of the trip. I had to tell her and reassure her that she would be my partner in crime. After, we cleaned up and made our bumpy ride to Getty. (For those who made the trip, understands when I mention the term bumpy). We ended up getting traffic on the way. The class, once arriving, came out with much liveliness. We took a few group pictures and had to make groups of four. My group consisted of four great individuals named Samantha, Oscar, John Carlos and I. Before I go ahead I will tell you a bit about them. Samantha is a very cheerful person with tons of positive energy that maybe her energy can power a house on her own. She is a very funny and likes to joke around which was a encouraging for our group. Oscar came to America about five years ago which I have respect for him because he caught on to our language exceptionally quick and told him to keep pushing on, regardless of what happens. For those who do not know Oscar he came from Mexico. John Carlos at every field trip I can say he carried with himself a can of monster. John is a straight forward and chill person which he was a great addition to the group. According to Mr. H is explained to us that we should explore the place without a map and we did. Therefore, my group and I went walking around to the first place we found and entered the rooms. I ended up seeing several peculiar statues, some did not even

Getty Villa Part 2

have heads nor arms but whoever discovered these pieces of art work and the numerous others, had an explanation of what was missing from them. A smart educated guess if you would say. I noticed that back then the people had Gods for everything. For example, God of the sea, love, war, wine, beauty, hate, etc. I believe you get the point. Makes me want to head back in time and view the civilization from their time so I am capable of experiencing it for myself. Questions that would want answering like these following examples: why did they believe in countless Gods? How were the living conditions in their time? Etc. Now that would be knowledgeable and gives me a better understanding of what they believed and how they lived. Samantha spent most of her time taking pictures on the artifacts’ which I believe we were not supposed to but who cares. Power to the people! One artifact that caught my attention was one that had the different sport people participated. The three I enjoyed reading about were the one of boxing, pankration, and one of the oldest sports wrestling. I did not believe it. I wish I was back in the past to fight and wrestle fighters from those times. My group and I also enjoyed being in one of the rooms which I think was meant for little kids, I think. Well everyone ended up making a picture and was able to color in vases with non permanent marker and draw on it. In that same room it had a movie screen that if someone walked behind it, all you would see is the shadows of our bodies. Samantha and I made a small play in which I wore a helmet, shield, and a sword. She only had a flower and a pot to water plants. I ended up killing her in the scene. We caught it on tape; it was really funny watching ourselves at the end. Toward the end of the trip Mr. H wanted us to watch this short clip about Getty Villa which I only remember parts and spoke about the history of it. At two thirty the class was to meet up at the starting point of our trip. The inexperienced driver arrived and boarded on. I feel he must have just started learning and the reason I said this is because once taking off home he had to drive up this hill which he could not go up. After many tries we all yelled with cheers when the driver succeeded. We caught traffic once again and that was our journey.

Revised 3rd Body Paragraph

Laying my son upon his bed tonight, my mind was awash with the fluttering bellows of my wishful nature. My soul is a wishful object, and begs wishes often. I am wishful of impossibilities, and it cannot be helped. I wish circumstances between my father and I had been very different. I wish my son to never know the aguish bereft in my heart. Laying his head upon the memory foam filled Spongebob covered pillow placed on the lower bunk of his oak bed frame, I was alone for a moment. My son was there with me, along with my daughter above him, dreaming and drooling. Nevertheless I found myself alone for just a few precious seconds. No one and nothing surrounded me. I was in a void, colorless and bleak, with such a sense of futility that I found no words to speak. That is the overwhelming expression my sensibility encourages upon me when I am suddenly aware of how similar my father and I can so easily be. Will I abandon my son? Will I cause him to feel as if his truer friends are to be found outside of the home in which he is raised, and with which I provide? Tears upon a decidedly delicate doted blessing asleep before me find their mark. I know in my heart’s splendid candor that I am incapable of anything other than finding a fond friendship with he who is I. I desire to be bonded to my boy as the very best of all families of fiction so eloquently are expressed amongst our avenues of the media. I love my son. A simple sentence to write, and a simple statement to make, but I am sure my father felt this for me. So what then does it mean to love your son? We are charged with loving our neighbors as ourselves, so how great must the love for the homonyms of our posterity be? I love my son, for he is the better of two men that share nearly identical nomenclature. I love my son, for he is the wonder in my heart made into physical form, full of splendid smiles so quick to bathe my soul. I placed him upon his bunk, and I began to weep. I wept for a multitude of reasons, but one stood out above others. I am fearful my son will know what has transpired with my father and me.

x7michael7x said...

. I am fearful my son will know what has transpired with my father and me. I am fearful my son will question how his grandfather so obviously cannot embrace his son as I embrace mine. I am fearful he will find himself rationalizing the irrational, and inevitably asking “would my daddy do this to me?” I am more and more aware of the infinite number of ways my wife and I would prevent such a pain, but regardless of all sanity I am fearful. At the foot of his bed, using my sleeve to steadily dam the river now flooding my face, I held my breath for a while. I was amazed at the amount of silence that now filled the small bedroom my children occupy. Living in a relatively large city amongst major roads of traffic, surrounded by many other homes all filled with families, possibly some encountering the same questions I am battling myself, my ears were suddenly blanked. In this quiet solidarity I found a sort of convoluted clarity fizzling through the webs of want, making peace within my mind. My son will forever be just that. He is so much more, but no action, purposeful or incidental, shall ever corrupt the pure truth that my father is within me, and I am within my son. However far my father’s heart may stray from my own, or my heart from his, my son’s belongs to me here and forever, no matter the wisdoms I wish for. A father and a son is a different magnet than daughter and mother, or any other familial relationship one can concoct. From the moment I first saw into the eyes of Noah, I dedicated myself to the continued growth of our friendship. From the first day, and until the last, I am his best friend whether he is mine or not. Noah will not wonder why his father cannot love him as a son should be loved by the bearer of his being. My baby boy may not be the carpenter of Nazareth to an apathetic auger of agnosticism; still he is the single greatest man, yet to become a man, in my life. Plato writes in Allegory of the Cave, an excerpt of The Republic “….he is forced into the presence of the sun himself, is he not likely to be pained and irritated?” (19) When we first are made aware of the very prison in which we often find ourselves, it is a painful revelation. I do not recall the primeval moment I was conscious of the missing bond between my father and me, and I am sure it was quite young, but I do not forget that the pain of that lesson has lingered. It manifests itself as a question I pose each and everyday concerning my own ineptness. My son is the sun to me. My father is in the dark. Plato is a politician via his literature, but when applied to the aspects of my life, which can be explained as my cave, it is poetic and profound. My son will continue much after I have ceased to be, and I hope he finds certainty with his son despite the uncertainty between my father, my son, and myself.

The Getty Villa
First of all, it was a beautiful day yesterday, I am glad I got to spend it outside. Anyways, my trip started off kinda crappy because I gotted lost:( Then, I got to the college, and I gotted lost again cause I couldn't find the parking lot. When I finally did arrive at the right place, the day got better. I saw some familiar faces, so I floated on over to my classmates. Then, I met this totally cool guy, Jose, and got to know him a little bit. It was nice being able to not only hang out with people I see twice a week and get to know them, but also meeting new people from other shools was kinda nice as well. We finally start heading out and our bus driver is totally ghetto and cannot make turns to save his life. But, we did go to a great spot to eat. I gotted a pastrami sandwich, it was yummay!!! The trip to the Villa was kinda long, but great scenery, once we got off the freeway. As we are driving up that steep hill to the Villa, it is like a whole different world up there. The flowers, trees, etc. alone shocked and awed me. It is a beautiful place up there, I would love to go again. Anyways, we get off the bus, do our bathroom thing, take a couple of pictures, and we are all left to explore on our own. My favorite areas in the Villa were the molten color exhibit, the family room(that was fun, we got to draw on vases, it was awesome!!), the chimaera (that was interesting, it is a mythical creature made up of a lion, goat, and snake...oooohhh yaaahhh), and the outer peristyle (it was beyond beautiful.) I learned that the Greeks had no shame in their game. They saw the body,as well as one particular function it does( if you know what I mean), as a gorgeous thing and they showed it A LOT!!! I don't have anything against finding the body beautiful and enjoying what one can do with their body beautiful, but I am kind of sheltered, so I don't want to see particular pictures depicting particular activities. The Greeks saw it as art, I guess I can look at it in that way as well. Towards the end of our exploration, it was fascinating to learn about how the Villa came to be: a love of art, a knowledge of history, and wanting to share one's love with everyone else. All in all, it was a wonderful trip and I am glad I tagged along for the ride:) I got some good food, met some cool people, saw captivating art, and was still awake to see everyone else slowly pass out.

The Greek Getty

This was one of the most interesting trips that I have ever been on. Everything looked like it was going to be normal as I approached the white coach, but seeing a dent in the rear fender was an omen that the Greek gods had an experience in store for us. Upon pulling out of the parking lot the bus rocked back and forth constantly at every corner. After we arrived at the restaurant we circled the block and did a figure eight before we stopped at a bistro for an early lunch. One turkey burger later for me and we were on our way on the freeway to our destination in beautiful Malibu. We were on the Santa Monica side of Malibu just down from the Circ de Soliel tents. The large coach drove through a very narrow gate that led up to the entrance of the Getty museum. The first thing that I saw was some of the most beautiful architecture in painted tiles. On the walls were smooth stucco in red and beige. Looking out over the colonnade I could see the sun glistening on the waves that were gently rolling ashore. We went from there to a stairway that led us to a Greek herb garden centered between two more colonnades in a Veranda setting. The walls were decorated with Greek symbols that dated before Christ about 750 years. Prior to Christianity there were many gods who were worshiped by the Greeks and the Romans. What was most interesting at first sight was that the both or their gods mirrored each other. It seemed that both had a Poseidon, Aphrodite, and a Backus, Backus my favorite was the god of wine and parties. He and Aphrodite could have been ones that everyone should have been invited to worship. Although, I was unclear as to how to worship one of these statues. In some ways we saw statue after statue and clay pot after clay pot until it seemed like the Louvre in Paris. That as museums go is probably the best in the world but there are too many mummies from Egypt on exhibit in that museum. After seeing so many mummies, I was sure that I did not want to see one more. One thing that I really liked was the exhibit of the Jewelry and coins. I was interested in the pieces that had the gods like all of the rest of the museum, but I was also intrigued by the odd things like the two vultures eating a dead deer. Who puts that stuff on their jewelry? The gods were not finished with us yet. Apparently they did not like it if you picked their herbs from their garden. After a short movie we waited for our white coach that was 20 minutes late. Finally we were in it on the way up a very narrow steep hill. When we got to the top, the transmission of the bus failed. The bus started rolling backwards. The driver put on the brakes and the other students were asking me to move to the front of the bus so it would not crash. The driver restarted the motor and it started rolling backwards again. The third time the engine died he managed to start it and make it to the top of the hill as we all prayed and cheered that we were not going to die. The ride home was nice and I fell asleep after a great day in Malibu.

When I woke up the morning to attend the Getty Villa museum I was so tired. I had set my alarm, but I woke up at 5am and would consistently wake up every after that. I was really worried about being late. I finally got off the couch and got ready. When I was getting ready I did not want to because I was not feeling good at all. My throat was hurting and was trying to drink juice, but that hurt too much. I know you guys might all say that I am a baby, but I really hate being sick or getting sick. I then talked myself into going anyway. I then proceed to leave the house and then I remember that we were going to Alondra Hot Wings and I need my ATM card. I started to look for my ATM card in my purse, but I was unable to find it. Then I was bother because I was unable to find it, was going to be late, had to go back home, and that I was not feeling good. I then turned around went back home and found my ATM card in my pants pockets. I then put my ATM card in my purse and drove once again in the direction towards to school. I knew that I was now going to be really late and was worried that the bus was going to leave me. I was worried because Mr. H said the bus was leaving at 9am. I thought to myself who could I call that was going to on the field trip. I remembered that Brain was going on the field trip. I then called home and asked Vincent my boyfriend to go in back packet to get the phone number in my binder. The funny thing was that I got Brain's phone number the first day of school. I got Brain's number and called him but, his voice mail went off and said to leave a message because his phone was not working. I got bothered once again because I was worried about the bus leaving. I then got a call back and Brain had no idea who I was. I asked him to tell Mr. H that I was running late. I guess people then told Brain I was the girl that sits in front of him. I eventually made it to school about 910 am and we were all still waiting for the rest of the people. I was relieved that they were not waiting for me. I saw my classmates and we just began to talk about random things. I noticed Jenny had brought her fiancé and baby who were so cute. It came time to leave the school and get on the bus and head for food. The bus started the bus driver then started to drive but, with the air off. It was hot so people then spoke up and he the put it on. The bus driver would do turns, but he would inch his way as though he was afraid to hit something. That inching up felt like simulator or a new person learns how to drive stick. The students on the bus were worried about hitting something or getting car sick. We arrived at Alondra Hot Wings after a small detour. I wondered what to order because I did not feel good so Brian, Samantha and John Carlo all shared 25 wings. The wings were great once again, but some how one of my wires in my brace popped out. The wire pocket out went flat somehow, but was no able to go back in the same hole which was a bit uncomfortable. I was worried to get back on the bus just because of the drivers driving because of the people who get car sick. The bus took off once again on a bumpy ride. I know that the ladies that sat behind me were worried about the bus driver hitting something or getting sick. We made our way to Malibu passing the beautiful ocean. We arrived at the Getty Villa where our driver still had a hard time entering. We all then got off the bus and listen to Mr. H and took group pictures. The group that I was in consisted of Jenny, John (her fiancé), Janelle (their baby) and I. Ironically there names all start with a "J" minus me.

Continues Post on the Getty Villa

We all went on our way throughout the museum grounds map free. I thought the map free idea was great. My group all entered the first door which then leads to information that I never knew. The museum was about the Greek Gods. I was amazed that every where I turned there was a statue. The statues were heads, or of a naked God. If times were like they were back the there would be a lot of people comfortable with their bodies and sexuality. I think that people would not worry about what size they are or worry about feeling embarrassed. I really could also not believe that there was so much knowledge about all these statues. How do we know that all these people are real and those there we Greeks that existed before me? Where do they really get all this history? Our group went through once again a new door because there were many doors to through. I saw artifacts that were so small but yet had so much detail. I could not believe these artifacts could have all that detail for being so small. The statues had readings about then about want time period they came from, where they were found and why they were in condition they were in. Once again, where to they get all information about the statues or artifacts from? What I thought was interesting to me was the story about Perserphone,Adonis and Aphordite. The story was the both like the same guy, but before Aphrodite did Perserphone had hid Adonis intentionally because she did not want any one else to have him. Perserphone saw Adonis because he got out of where he was held and wanted him too. They both fought over him till the Gods said that they would have to share Adonis. The funny part was they did not even give Adonis the option to decide to pick. He would have to spend a part of the year with each. Times are not even like that. To share to wives is not something people are proud of, but some are. Then I learned that Paris and Helen fell in love all because Venus set them up intentionally. How is that possible? Imagine if times were like that where someone said you and you will fall in love? I also saw Demeter, Hera, Hermes,Diana, Posedian, Ascleplus, Hygieia. These god and goddesses all are god of something such as health, medicine, love, hunt, war, fertility and purity. All in all I learned so much of what they all history. Our group went into a fun children s room which was more hands on which was fun. It was about time to go, but we wanted to see the movie and we got there to late. The theater was full and we were bothered and if they told us the show starts about every 15 minutes we would have went earlier. My group then proceeded to the exit to leave at 230. All the classmates were there, but there was no bus so we waited. The buses arrived and time for home. I wanted to get home to see the ending of the Dodger game, but that was possible. I was only able to get a play by play from John because of his phone. I loved on the drive to school how different every city or house looked from the freeway. Then we were finally at school where I could go home and relax. All in all the experience was amazing.

P.S. I was also very pleased to get to know my classmates more on a one on one level.

This morning is one of those nights where is like a scary movie. I went for a drive to the gas station by my house to get some medicine because I still feel sick. When I walked out the font door it was completely foggy. You could not see until you got close enough to something. I saw fog with red and it looked like a fire or a scary walk way. The red was just light from the back of a car. I know I am weird, but that is what it looked like to me. The fog was a bit scary to drive through.

GOOD LUCK TO THOSE DOING THE AIDS WALK WISH I COULD BE THERE INSTEAD OF WORK!!!!!!

The Statue That Did Not Look Right

This story has a lot of irony and a less all in one. The fact is the story caught me right from the beginning. The story had a great introduction talking about the statue. The statue is something that we will never know if it true. I eyes want to believe something is true because of what we see. The there is another part of all of us where we judge right from the beginning. People like to say that I am very quite and may not seem like I am having a fun. I am all the opposite, but people do not know that because they do not know me. I always sit back and like to look at people whether it be body language or actions. People some how get the wrong idea. It is not not weather something or someone is real or fake. To me it is about getting to know that object or person whether it be history of life. I wonder what person has not been judged or judged someone else. I also learned this working in the optic field. There was a patient who walked in with white shirt with holes. paint and extremely dirty. I thought this guy will only pay for what his insurance covered. The guy bought a a frame more that what his insurance covered and got the works on his lens. Then when he went to pay he pulled out over 2000 dollars in his shirt pocket all in different bills. The man was owner of a company and he was able to buy 3 pairs of glasses. I felt dumb because I judged, but still knew to offer him what he needed not the basic. i reason I offered what he needed was to give him knowlegde in optic and now he can not say that girl did not explain options to me or how the option help for his vision. The statue was something the Getty really wanted. The people at the Getty wanted it because of how it looked. Then before they bought it because they were a bit unsure. It is okay to be unsure or second guess. I mean they did not know all the information so the got second opinions and history. I guess I can say no matter what history repeats it self. The story was great!!!

Sunflower Sutra

This story also has the meaning of the one before. This story is talking about how dirty and greasy locomotives are. It was like the were in a junk yard. In that junk yard all they saw was ugly, broken or dead. They fought to see something so beautiful in something so ugly. This like a mean or ugly person. We or most try to fight through to see the beauty of the person. If some needs to point the beauty out. Even if you are the first person to find that beauty it is up to you to help people see it. That sunflower was the only beauty or life they saw. The sunflower mad there day. When you find that beauty in someone else it can make that persons day of life to come. If you point beauty that is blind then you can grab others attention or liven your eyes. Try to see the best things in everything. Do not try yo change that thing or person into something they are not.

Remind yourself you are amazing change for yourself not for others. Help other be confident in what they think are imperfections.

I will forgo the rather...insidious comments sortieing to the forefront of my mind in regards to our somewhat estranged wheelman. I am assured the fault lies solely with our mode of transportation. Veritably, my point wanders not towards the intended destination. Let us retrace my steps through the gardens and halls of grandeur.

The grounds, as expected, were immaculate in their reception. The design likewise possessed an air of nobility not found a short distance away, were all manner of ill-gotten activities regularly transpire. The juxtaposition of these two extremes makes the strength and beauty of the art all the more captivating. Inside were statues that have, against all odds, stood the test of time to display their wondrous nature to our generation. Every detail imaginable is accounted for on these creations, every fold of a robe, every vein chiseled in painstaking detail. With Greg and Kayla postulating alongside, we reasoned that no artist today had the skill (or the patience) to compare with these ancient maestros of stone. Verily, the expertise entangled with engendering flesh in stone has been lost in the annals of history, likely never to be recovered. If my assumption proves to be faulty, the evidence may be contained within those gilded palisades at the Villa.

In this poem, the sunflower has been covered by dirt and grime of industry, this sunflower is really representing a demise in humanity. This poem really is not about a flower, but the tragedy of losing one’s inner beauty, the brightness which makes one shine. A “sutra” is actually a cable or a fiber line that holds something together. Ginsberg’s sutra is his sunflower, or realistically his hope and creativity. As he sits and gazes at the machinery and locomotives he notices the sunflower as “a dead gray shadow against the sky, big as a man, sitting dry on top of a pile of ancient sawdust”(lines 11-12). In his mind, this sunflower is a symbol of life, even though it is dead. The locomotive and the industry discussed in this poem are examples of the destruction that has taken its toll on the nature and beauty of our world. This began with the Industrial Revolution, when there was a
noticeable shift in the use of technology and transportation (i.e. locomotives). This revolution demeaned nature and only worked for the benefits of enhancing the technology. This depressing view of industry is described as “…dead baby carriages, black treadles tires
forgotten and retreaded, the poem of the river bank, condoms and pots, steel knives, nothing stainless….”(lines 16-17). The picture this paints is a picture of grime, dust and garbage.
The sunflower stands defeated with “seeds fallen out of its
face, soon-to-be-toothless mouth of sunny air, sunrays obliterated on its hairy head like a dried wire spiderweb, leaves stuck out like arms out of the stem, [and] gestures from the sawdust root…” (lines 21-24).Its outer appearance seems to have made the sunflower hopeless and on the road to death, as we are on the road to death if we allow the industry and destruction of nature to get the best of us.

We as human beings, make mistakes throughout our lifetime. Then again, what is a human without sin? Although many of us deny it, our past makes us who we are. We learn from our past mistakes and better ourselves as a person. In Plato’s “Allegory of the Cave” Plato describes the ignorance of humanity, oblivious of its own limited perspectives. An individual escapes his limitations of the cave, and discovers the reality outside the cave. He is bewildered by what he once seemed to have known of being one way, turning out to be way different than he once thought. After being exposed to reality, if he were to return to the cave, he will be misunderstood and seen as crazy by the folks in the cave. They have not yet shared the intellectual insight as he has. Growing up, we climb out of that “cave” and see the sun for ourselves, meaning truth. We are blinded by what we, as children have been taught. Our parents keep us ignorant and naĂŻve; how they were raised. As we grow, we are oblivious to the reality of life and have to experience that reality on our own. We then learn that reality is worse far more than what we once believed. The importance of the allegory lies in Plato’s belief that there are invisible truths lying under the surface of things. Ii have made my own share of mistakes that have taken me deeper into my cave. I did not believe there was life after a miscarriage, only pain; but I have discovered there is much more than just a scar. Getting pregnant and losing my child, dealing with the aftermath; confronting my parents, and growing from that experience at a young age was a heartbreaking event in my life that has taught me not to take anything for granted.

Sunflower Sutra

This poem/story contains a lot of imagery, and starts off with a powerful illustration of a polluted world. A world that has been polluted mostly by locomotives, and in all that sawdust, a sunflower sprouted. The author, in my opinion, goes out and speaks in amazement on how a sunflower can stand with its soiled roots, and goes on describing automobiles with provocative words. Although the sunflower is withered, and nearly seedless, he personifies it deeply, by describing its yellow flowers as a crown, the face of the flower, ears, etc. With all that it's fed --spilled oil, gasoline, rust, and other chemicals-- it is still a sunflower, not a mutated, polluted object. Something as perfect and pure as a sunflower will not grow into something else, regardless of its surroundings, and I think this is true with human beings as well; only the purest shine. Towards the end, the sunflower does not forget its purity, as the author personifies it as his previous soul, something he loved when he had it once before (probably innocence or purity). The pollution could be a metaphor for the corrupted world we live in today, and how many sick things we are exposed to on a daily basis. Even when one is young, one is not aware such things are provocative, as it is the first time one is exposed to it. We must not forget our purity and goodness while we live in such a crooked world; we must not forget the sunflower within us...

.. or it could mean something completely off!

Essay Revision

Intro: Imagine having all of one’s dreams and ambitions cleared off the board, and have simple people predetermine what one’s occupation, worth, and future will be for the world. To stand in the face of humanity, filled with great ideas to aid it, and be smitten down with simple acts of prejudice is not what many call reality, but the face of evil. This world does not need any more laws to protect its people, as we are starting to see redundant policies that do nothing but cover a dead body with bleach to dispose of evidence. The throne of narrow-minded people still prospers, and so a new enemy must arise to vanquish it. Some may say the days of slavery and oppression of women are long gone, but that is clearly only wishful thinking. From the time that Georgio Agamben wrote his famous Homonyms, the fight against classifications and stereotypes has been a brutal one. Although the story speaks of classifications in the English language, it also pertains to the human race as Agamben proceeds to explain how these classifications cause paradoxes. Giving a specific label to a word takes away any other meaning it can hold, and soon we are no longer able to distinguish it from that label. As he gives examples of a Horse, not all think of the same type of horse, but nonetheless, we still think of the same animal. The color Red holds different meanings to different people, as some may see it representing blood and death, while others see love. These examples Agamben gives explain how restricting labels can be, and cause people to only see this label without any further expectations from it. Having experienced sexism in all shapes and forms, I have overcome opposition in the past, and in the present; all of which will aid me in the future to become the successful being that I am.

"The Statue That Did Not Look Right"

This was the reading out of the three that I was able to connect with the most. I love hearing and learning about the way our minds work and the vast amount we still do not know about our main control hub. The adaptive unconscious mentioned in this reading is somewhat of our judge. It makes the call for us. I can really relate this to me (as I imagine everyone else can) when you meet someone and are able to tell what kind of persont hey are from that first initial moment. Now some others might say "Noooo way, I'm always wrong at that and they turn out the nicest person, etc". However, for me it is very strange. I have really been able to tell what kind of person someone is within the first moment. I guess my adaptive unconscious is actually working up there. It is funny too because my mom knows how I am good and this and able to pick a part someone without ever themselves getting to know me. She has even asked me on ocassions to tell her what I think of people that surround her in life. What am I? some kind of Circus freak now? Hah. Better back to the story I relate to all the people who knew within the first glance the kuoros was fake. I guess it is that gut feeling we always have. Maybe the adaptive unconscious doesn't have to do with our brain/mind but our stomach? haha food for thought.

Revision Body Paragraph 2

Ignorant is the word my dad used when he was trying to have a conversation with me about my future and how he wanted me to succeed in life. I just nodded and said some words that are a blur to me now. I remember watching TV, an episode of the Simpson’s was on and the texture of the suede couch felt so soft against my arms on that cold day. It had just been a semester out of school; I had passed my first attempt to see the college life boat but seemed there was no sail to Treasure Island just a lost boat in the sea. I jumped off and was swimming to a work cave where all the money was, partying, free of worries and no commitments of anything other than doing a good job. I saw my friends tied into studying, homework, papers and group projects. While I was free from all that, I smiled and had the relieved expression when one wipes the sweat off their forehead and says “phew” I escaped that crisis. Somehow I felt safe in the cave. I had just started working a retail job in a home department store and then was referred to a financial office for an administrative assistant to the CEO of the company. I was working 2 jobs digging my way to the cave. I saw sparks everywhere, but no light. A chain that pulled me everyday to repeat the same work, home, sleep Monday through Thursday. Except Friday, Saturday and Sunday I would go out explore around the cave. After the financial job my boss moved to La Brea, the economy crisis was rising and I did not have money to spend on gas. I had the part time job at the retail store then got another job at an aerospace company full time. In a short period of time both of my jobs dived in the low production pool, the home department store was closing and the aerospace company wasn’t doing so well that they cut my hours from eight a day to five. After that I went through a phase of not being home at all. I would not want to find myself home because I encountered thoughts that I did not want to think about. I recall one Friday night (I had no money) staying home watching movies in the living room; I had the romantic temper and put on my favorite one The Notebook. I always cry to how this love found themselves back after years and throughout the years and how he accomplished what he had promised her when they were young. I wiped my tears as the movie ended, I turned off the DVD player and walked back to my pitch-black room I was laying on the comforter starring at the dark ceiling I asked myself “what have I accomplished?” It’s been 2 years and I have nothing to show for it. The thoughts that haunted me came into my mind. I thought when will I be completely satisfied with my life? I had to find my true calling and that’s what I searched for as Plato in The Allegory of the Cave says “Clearly, he said, he would first see the sun and then reason about him”(26). He sees the light and reasons why he had seen it and what reason there was behind the sun. Concerning my light, I had to find reason for the creation of my cave, and find reason for its destruction through education. I needed the feeling of accomplishment to make my way to a better life. The true motivation of school was when I was able to picture myself five to seven years in my office hanging my degree on the wall.

Whatever IS Clever - Adrian Moreira
Body Paragraph #1

I remember when I was young, clothes being passed down from my brother to me. The same went for my two sisters. I did not mind it too much since I always wanted to be just like my brother. Of course, if there was an article of clothing that was torn but wearable, my mom would simply sew it up, making it good as new. For some reason, the sewing did not apply to socks. I remember one day, in the sixth grade, I wore a pair of torn socks to school. Why did I wear a pair of torn socks? Well, I was too lazy that morning to look for a pair of clean socks without holes to wear to school so I just slipped on the first pair of socks I could find. Sure enough, on the very day I wore my torn socks to school, we were to play indoor volleyball in physical education. This required those who wanted to participate to take off their shoes. I did not know what I was going to do. I did my best to be as anonymous as possible so Mrs. Fair, my physical education teacher, would not call on me to join the ongoing game. I was worried that if she called on me to play I would have to show my fellow classmates my socks and I would have never been able to live down the embarrassment of being labeled “the kid with holy socks”. Sure enough, she looked straight at me and said, “Adrian, would you like to play next?” In my calmest, most inconspicuous voice I replied, “No thank you.” She went on to ask me why I would not play. The more questions she asked, the more excuses I had to come up with on the fly. I kept refusing and refusing but she kept persisting on knowing why. Finally, I could not come up with any other excuse so I showed her my torn socks. Her facial expression changed from annoyed to troubled. My expression changed from worried to officially embarrassed. I wished I could dig a hole and jump in it. Living in a cave at that moment sounded like paradise. She told me it was ok that I did not play volleyball that day. When the period had ended, Mrs. Fair pulled me aside and said, “It is ok that you can not afford socks. There are programs here at school to help out low-income families. A lot of our Mexican students are enrolled in it.” Giorgio Agamben writes in Homonyms “…is it true that every concept determines a class that constitutes its extension?”(2) The concept of my ripped socks caused Mrs. Fair to determine my family fell into the class of low-income. Is it safe to assume that Mrs. Fair was “unfair” in her judgment of a kid with torn socks? Did my hole-filled socks make me underprivileged? Did it make my family low income? And what did being Mexican have to do with it? I’m not even Mexican. I smiled, put my shoes back on, and left to my next class. I did not think about what she said. In Homonyms, Agamben continues and writes: “Russell linked these properties (and the pseudo classes that derive from them) with those in whose definition appear the ‘apparent variables’ constituted by the terms ‘all’, ‘every’, and ‘any’.” (3) Saying that all or every person does this or that creates pseudo classes, or classes that are not genuine. Perhaps Mrs. Fair assumed that “all” students with holes in their socks needed financial assistance. She did not bother to ask me why I was wearing torn socks. She just jumped to her own conclusions. I was just a kid who was too lazy to find some socks. I never thought I would be considered a Mexican student in need of financial assistance because of it. I wonder what might have happened if I had spoken Spanish to her.

The Getty Villa

I very much enjoyed our little Malibu getaway, minus the bus driver. Very nice guy I'm sure, but tardiness and whip lash are not two of my favorite things :) ha ha! I really liked meeting and getting to know classmates, on a more intimate level. There was a definite bonding thing going on. Fun, Fun!
The museum was gorgeous and the glass exhibit was fabulous. I watched the hand blown glass videos, and they were nothing less than impressive. It truly is an amazing craft, which takes great patients and talent. I also liked the great collection of gold jewelry and accessories on the second floor.....hmmm! Oh yes, I can't forget the kids zone where I created some amazing pottery designs. I thought I was good, until the instructor quickly erased my creation after I walked away :( The trip was an overall success and I look forward to visiting the Getty Museum very soon!!!

Revised 2nd Body Paragraph
Growing up with a family whose expectattions for my life that are higher than mountains and farther than seas go is stressful at times. My family has labeled me the golden child. I believe that this is expected for the first born. I was the first child, grandchild, and niece for both sides of my family. I know my family only wants what is best for me. I also want the best for myself. It has not been easy growing with two Mexican families that have opposing views. My mother's side of the family is a very traditional strict Mexican family. I was always told to respect my elders and obey all the rules. No exceptions or excuses were ever tolerated. I did what I was told because I did not want to get pulled to the side to be spanked. My fathers side of the family is far from strict and very much laid back. I grew up with uncles as well as my father being in a gang. There were times where my unlces and my father would go missing for a couple of months. It was because they were serving time in prison or jail. Since I was little my family never told me the truth of why they were in there, but as I grew older it did not take much to figure out the truth. At one point one of my dads brothers got shot in the head. He survived the gun shot. I saw the drugs, the tattoos with their gangs name so boldly written on their bare brown skin. As a girl a person would think Barbie dolls and my Little Pony would be my favorite toys to play with, but in my case I grew up with all boys on both sides of my family. My favorite things to do were play sports and even at times play video games with my cousins. I was raised in a family which seemed to have a tradition of girls getting pregnant at the age of fifteen or sixteen years old. My mother was one of those girls. When I reached that age I was given the "talk" about sex and getting pregnant from all my family members. On my father's side of the family the tradition was dropping out of high school and not going to college. I suppose I was never given that talk about the consequences of not graduating because dropping out was never an option for me. Most of my cousins decided to become teen moms and continue having babies. My other cousins decided to become outlaw and be put in juvenile hall, house arrest, and now in jail. In Homonyms Giorgio Agamben says, "When we say that certain objects have all a certain property...We suppose...that it can be distinct from the objects that belong to it..."(2). I am blood related to criminals and teen mothers, but I am distinct because I am not a criminal or teen mother myself. Having a family who has a criminal record and has a history of teen pregnancies has everything to do with the person I am today. I am not ashamed of where I came from and who my family is. I am a strong person because of where I came from and who my family is. I just simply do not want to live my life out the way some of my family members did. I chose to graduate high school and further my education by going to college. I am nineteen years old with no baby in my life and no criminal record. It was hard at times seeing my uncles, my father, and my cousins behind a glass window in their jail attire. Did I feel sorry for them? No, I did not have any sympathy for them. They chose that life and they chose to not learn from their mistakes. It made me really angry at times seeing my family fall and always having someone missing at Thanksgiving dinner or Christmas. How could my family not affect my life. It affected me a great deal. I could have been another criminal in the family, but I never wanted my family to have to come visit me or see me in jail. I would have been no better than them. Being the golden child has motivated me to do better and move foward with my life. I know I am far from perfect, but I try my best not to disappoint my family.

4th paragraph revised.

After were engaged me and my fiancĂ© began to see how are lives were to start growing rapidly and were to be planning for our own individual futures. I as a child have always wanted to be a teacher. After high school, I headed off to college to pursue my dreams of becoming the greatest teacher ever. My fiancĂ© really had no idea what he really wanted until Halloween of 2008. He had found what he wanted for his career and knew that this dream would not be easy. During our relationship, there was a point that was hard for us to go through. My fiancĂ© had decided to join the marines, and I was devastated. I was devastated at the fact that we were going to be apart most of the time and we were not going to be able to spent time together just me and him. Now our relationship was soon going to be interrupted most of the time by the marines and their rules and unplanned days. I as his partner had to make sure that he knew I did support him in his career decision. Giving the fact that he had joined the Marines our relationship began to live the life of a soldier. Now that we are engaged things have changed dramatically but in a good way. Now giving the fact that soon after we are married and we have settled down I will soon be only looked and labeled as, “The Marines Wife” or as around his Marines, “That’s Gomez’s Wife.” As Giorgio Agamben says in Homonyms, “How do our representations refer to objects?”(2). Some of our representations refer to objects simply how we think of them and what comes to our minds. As I will be the wife of a marine most of the marines in the corporation will look at me and will think of the first thing that comes to their mind. Giving the fact that my soon to be husbands last name is Gomez and they call him as his last name, they will think of him as they see me and then call me “Gomez’s wife.” I want to be called Janelle, I don’t want to be labeled as some woman that was married into the Marines life. I want them to know me as me, Janelle and not just for his wife. My personality is way more that just a military wife. I have a mind to speak and I have courage. I am a kind, generous, fun, exciting, loving person that wants only to called by what she is and that is Janelle not “Gomez’s wife.” Giving the fact that some things will start to change, my life will soon consist of early training mornings, long deployments, lonely duty nights, dirty cammies, sexy dress blues, lots of tears, endless prayers, care packages and love letters, over whelming pride, spending some holidays alone, and even the exciting homecomings, I am Janelle a proud fiancĂ© of my Marine.

At a very young immature age of 18 I was pregnated by my boyfriend Efren at the time. At 19 years old I had a beautiful 7 lb 9 oz little girl, Lydia. Being at how I had her at such a young age, I felt it was important to mature and grow up. I wanted to provide the very best I could for her as well as what this little person that meant/means so much to me deserved. I began to look for a job and found one, which was in the evenings. I thought it was perfect so when Efren found a job, it could be during the day we can both be with Lydia. A few months passed and Efren could not find anything and on my end found another job during the day. Ok so I would work and Efren would stay home with Lydia. I did not mind the situation; he really did try hard in finding work, yeah right. One day while doing the laundry I found a piece of paper in Efren’s pant pocket, I was absolutely shocked at what I read “Position denied due to: THC in urine sample” I was so upset with Efren, how is that I am getting up at 5:30 in the morning to be at one job by 7:30 out at 3:00 to be at my other job by 4:00 and out at 11:30 or 12:00. I was the one missing all of the fun things my baby was doing, I was the one who mentally challenged and physically exhausted, did not eat more one meal a day with maybe a few snacks, all because Efren was choosing to get high over getting a job! Resentment started towards him, I began to look at him differently, and I was easily irritated by him. A few more months passed and Efren despite my warnings of leaving him if he did not find a job or at least go to school did neither, and I left him. I never looked back, listened to the apologies, the excuses, the “I will change”, the “but I love you”, the poems, the songs, the family, nothing changed my mind. Surprisingly I did not find myself crying, or feeling upset about it. It seemed that his lack of desire to work, while I worked two jobs, and his always wanting to be high or drunk, set my mood. I knew I was better off without him, and knew I could provide for my daughter alone.

Hello everyone, I hope you are all well. Well our mid-term is finally over!! It was a such a stressful week. Good news, I started work on Friday. There were no students for it was a professional development day. I meet with all the staff 12 core teachers, 3 elective teachers, and 7 office staff members. Some of the people were very friendly others standoffish, I always say “I am not here to make friends, just my job” The school is amazing and brand new. All classrooms have state of the art technology; you can still smell the fresh paint. All the students have a strict uniform dress code, and are pushed to succeed in all areas. Each grade level (6th-9th) have 4 teams within; Norte Dame, Poly Tech, Yale, Stanford, and so on. The emphasis on going on to a college or university is the school’s goal. They have this amazing music room: it has a drum set, about 12 guitars, several amps, and other instruments, so cool!! The position is only for 6 hrs but the teacher I will be working directly with says she needs me for 8. The principal also feels that the school and staff could use my help longer. So tomorrow the principal and vice principal will try and work out a schedule, which I am crossing my fingers that it will include more hours. My day ended well and id rove for over in hour in traffic, yay!!(sarcasm) oh yeah I almost forgot, the dress code for all staff members is business casual, I don’t have clothes that is business casual!!!LOL We will see what happens with that

The Getty Villa

I very much enjoyed touring the Villa. Whitney and I carpooled and had our own little death defying adventure before we even got to the other college (forever to remain secret) The trip there and back on the other hand was very unexpected :( I hope everyone has recovered from their whiplash. It was a beautiful day and the grounds of the Villa came to life. The water fountains were so calming and gave an atmosphere of tranquility. My group and I walked the grounds and observer everything there was to see. There were mummies, mosaics, white marble statues, articles of clothing, pottery, jewelry and much much more. My favorite exhibit would have had to of been the glass. I am very much into ceramics and pottery, but the glass vases and articles were my favorite pieces. They were so carefully crafted and detailed. The sizes of them were comparable to a soda can. The other artifacts that really caught my interest were the pieces of jewelry. Many of the gold rings had a small stone on the top with an engraving of some sort. The others were just all gold but still very beautiful as well. I really enjoyed getting to spend time more intimately with a few of our classmates and a few others from the other school.

Today by far is the most tiring Sunday I’ve had (ever), but the most self-fulfilled (physically of course). I woke up early in the wee morning and made it on time to Cerritos College. We had breakfast at Alondra Hot Wings and headed out to LA once our stomach was fully satisfied. Once there, I decided to run the entire way with Leydi (thanks for being my running buddy btw!). I am, regrettably to say, fully feeling the aftermath of my decision via my legs. But the entire run was quite exhilarating! Even though I was dead tired, I kept on pushing and pushing and pushing myself to get to the finish line. Sadly, I had to decline all the free goodies everyone offered during the entire walk! Besides that, both Leydi and I made it to the finish line and walked around to canoodle with the great people there. One thing I do love about finishing is the natural high you get when you’re finally done. I love that feeling! After, we then had to wait almost two hours to wait for the group. Then we had to wait for quite a long time for the bus to arrive. LA traffic is definitely on my top ten no me gusta list. Overall, today has been an adventure! Thanks to everyone who made it an awesome day!

Do People That Snore Have More Fun?

I never went to any sleep over's when I was younger. Now, I am 25, my boyfriend Johnny and I had been dating for about a year. Naturally being in a relationship, I wanted to sleep over his house. The only thing that was stopping me was the fact that I snore. Obviously I did not want to scare him away. Who wants a girlfriend that snores? Our relationship has been going great. We are getting along and having fun with each
other. Eventually Johnny asked me to sleep over his house. Thinking back to the time when I was in the car with my cousins and sisters I said, "Maybe". Maybe in girl talk means NO, but he thought I might sleep over. Well I never did, and he was tired of asking me and said, "you are sleeping over tonight because I have something special plan for you" I
thought "I cannot sleep over he will break up with me," that moment also relates something that Giorgio Agamban in Homonyms he said, "all that in any way concerns every or each members of a class must not be a member of that class," (5). I was concerned that my boyfriend was in a "class" that thought snoring in women was bad or wrong. Then I put myself in the "class" of a woman scorned because I thought he was going to break up with me due to my snoring. Knowing he was not that shallow, I came up with the idea to start a fight. That did not work because the fight lasted less 20 minutes. I thought to myself, "Wow, he really wants to get some." With this thought I put him the "class" of a "cad" who just wants sex. I sat on the couch and pondered how I was going to get out sleeping over. The only thing I could think of was something that would gross out even the toughest of men. This was my secret weapon and the last weapon I had left in my arsenal. I told him I would really love to sleep over, but my aunt Flow came to visit and I would not feel comfortable. Johnny looked at me with a sad face
and said "I do not mind, I was not trying to get in your pants tonight. I just wanted to cuddle with you" That line felted like it came out of movie. Of course being a girl I fell for the line and agreed to stay the night. That statement removed Johnny from that "Cad class" in to "Great Boyfriend class." My fate in him was restored, but I had to devise a plan how I was going to go to sleep. Like a fierce warrior I was going over in my head of what would be my plan of attack. How was I going to fall asleep and not bother Johnny? Knowing I would have to wait for him to fall asleep first, so he would not hear me snoring. I waited. I waited for him what seemed to feel like
an hour. I stared at stuff in ordered not to fall sleep. The Sandman must get his kicks at watching me fall asleep, so before I knew I was dead to the world. I was out like an old light bulb in a dark basement. I was asleep for an hour when I woke up and I felt Johnny turned over. I
looked to see if he was awake, thank goodness he was still asleep. That whole night I may have only slept 4 hours. I was waking every thirty minutes in order not to wake him.

I suffer through the night like this because I was afraid Johnny will tell me to roll over or ask me to leave because I snore. When morning light came in the window and jumped up in a haste to get ready to leave that it woke up Johnny. He said, "why you leaving so early? You're not tired?" I felted if I did not leave I was going to die of exhaustion; so that I just gave him a quick "Nah." he said, "I know why you did not want to sleep here." I stopped and turned and gave a cool “why?” He said, "It is ok if you snore, I do not mind. I
actually found your snoring kind of soothing." My face felt so hot like fire because I started to blush. The only thing I could think to say was, "I am sorry I kept you up, I will understand if you do not me to sleep over anymore" Johnny said, "Jenny stop talking, it was ok and I
hope we could do a sleepover again." I had a quick bathroom break and lay back in bed. My head hit the pillow and it felt euphoric. I quickly fell back asleep not worrying that Johnny would be disturb by my snoring. From that day I knew I made a right choice for who to be my boyfriend. He does tease me from time to time about my snoring, but never to hurt my feeling. Now, my family and friends are a different story.

The Statue That Did Not Look Right by Malcom Gladwell

I chose to post on The Statue That Did Not Look Right by Malcom Gladwell because it talked about Art and Psychology. Art and Psychology are two of my favorite subjects. This writing made many strong points. One, to not judge a book by its cover. To think before you make any snap judgments. Third, to think logically and further research ideas. The people at the Getty Museum were completely fooled. They saw an opportunity and took it without considering the repercussions. They did not research the statue further enough. They were merely acting on impulse and eager to purchase it. Many people noticed the problems in the statue. These Art folks saw something in the statue other people could not see. They were more observant than others. This taught me that looks can indeed be deceiving. Zeri, Harrison, Hoving and Dontas were more advanced in the art business, more than the Getty team. They were more thorough with their investigation of the statue, kouros. Psychologist Timothy D. Wilson stated that we toggle back and forth between our conscious and unconscious modes of thinking, depending on the situation. He gave a good example from his book, Strangers to Ourselves about inviting a co-worker over for dinner and treating them like dirt the next day unconsciously. This taught me to not dip your pen in the company ink. But, more importantly that we as humans could be careless in our everyday lives and not know the problems we are causing to ourselves and others. I also learned about decision making situations. Many people need to have that second opinion. They live in doubt, they need hard concrete evidence. These people are cautious. For example, at my job when someone asks me if we have a movie in stock and if I tell them no right away they ask someone else. What they do not know is that I am knowledgeable of the movies we have at the store. But, since I did not make the effort of searching it for them, they thought I was lying. They decided to ask another associate just to make sure. Which is not necessarily a bad thing. It would be a waste of time on my part because I knew for a fact that we don’t carry that title, but it would make that customer feel better knowing for sure we didn‘t have it. “Decisions made very quickly can be every bit as good as decisions made cautiously and deliberately” (5). This excerpt made me believe that decisions in life can have a 50% chance of being the right or wrong answer. You just have to be willing to take the risk or not. We have to practice scenarios in our lives and learn things on our own. It sucks to say, but we must learn through our mistakes. Sometimes that gut feeling you get could be the answer you’re looking for or that thought in the back of your mind, could be your conscious mind trying to tell you something. The people at the museum made a poor decision with purchasing the statue. But, it was their mistake to make and they learned from it. Nobody is perfect. There is not one human mind that has not been fooled.

The Statue That Did Not Look Right

I read all three stories and i chose this one becuase it was the easier one to comprehend. The story was about the Getty being dooped into buying a fake Greek statue for 10 million dollars. The ironic part of the story is that the Getty was cautious at first about buying the statue. Before they made the purchase, they did extensive research and scrutinized the statue to make sure that it was not fake. After the statue passed the Getty's rigorous tests, it was purchased and showcased proudly at the Getty for 14 months. Another expert in the field of sculptures wanted to witness the rare statue that was being showcased at the Getty. It only took a glance at the statue to realize that it was a fake. Other experts took a look at the statue and came to the same conclusion. The Getty conducted some more tests and came to the conclusion that it was indeed a fake. The second part of the story talks about the psychological aspect of the purchasing of the fake statue. It posed the question why the Getty members did not realize that it was fake right away, while a number of experts realized that it wa a fake at first glance. It turns out that the Getty members wanted so desperately for the statue to be realt that their intuition and instincts were blinded. The other experts had no bias towards the statue and realized that it was a fake just by a hunch. In conclusion the article said that our intincts and prejudgements are not always wrong. In fact in some cases it can be more or just as effective as stopping, gathering information, proccessing, and then maiking a decision. This is an interesting argument. I disagree with this argument because everytime i make a decision based on instinct, i always end up into trouble.

The Perfect Disappointment

The feeling of relief flooded over me as the class of 2008 through up their caps in celebration. A sea of families went onto the football field to find their graduates to congratulate them. Everyone was pushing and shoving in order to find their family members. Across the field I see my mother and she sees me. We start walking towards each other. About half way, my mother starts crying. We finally reach each other and give each other the biggest hug. It was the type of hug that make one feel thankful to have a mother. She repeats over and over how proud she is of me. The feeling that I got from those words would be in comparison to winning the World Series. I go down the line of family members receiving hugs and praise; my cousins, my uncles, my aunts, my brother, and my grandparents. They all express how proud they are of me. The last one in line is my father. He was standing there with the stern demeanor that he is famous for. I hesitantly go up to him and give him a hug. No words are spoken between us. My mother quickly asks my father if he is proud of me. I wish that the chaos and noise that was happening all around us could have buried and stifled the words that were about to come out of my father’s mouth. “It is just high school. No big deal. This is expected. Let’s see how he does in the real world. ” He did not bother to even try and conceal the words. I heard them clears as day. Those few words took me out of the euphoria that I was feeling. The smile that I wore from ear to ear faded. Whoever came up with the saying of “sticks and stones” obviously never had a father belittle him. It was hard to be proud of my accomplishment after this. Although high school was easy for me it still required a lot of hard work and de dedication. He failed to see that I was not only a high school student, but a club member, as well as an athlete, and not to mention working a part time job. It was a juggling act, yet I passed with high honors. Still, my father treated the event as if it was nothing out of the ordinary. I was flooded with rage by the end of the night. I maintained my composure and faked my smiles the whole night. This incident was one of many where my father down talked my accomplishments. This has been going on for as long as I can remember. I have tried and failed countless of times to make my father proud of me. All I want from him is respect. This goal has changed me as a person. It has taken me through many phases of my life. I would act a certain way which would earn me a different label each time. I Georgio Agamben’s essay titled Homonyms, he talks about how one cannot label a person as one thing because the label fails to describe the persons other traits and characteristics. The actions that I have done throughout my life has been to earn my father’s respect, yet people misconstrued my actions as other things therefore earning me countless of labels. Going through these barrage of labels has made me have a different outlook on what it means earn respect and to be successful.

The Statue That Did Not Look Right

I really enjoyed reading this excerpt. The Getty’s fake purchase of the Kouros maybe could have been prevented if the people participating in the purchase would have listened to their ‘adaptive unconscious” a little closer. If we look into the theory of ‘adaptive conscious’ can we not relate to it or remember a time when we have made very quick judgments based on very little information, I can. I tend to do get a bad vibe from certain people and usually the more I find out about that person, the more I realize I do not want to be or continue a relationship with that individual. Just yesterday i met my cousin’s husband for the first time: I told my husband that there is something about this guy I don’t like, not sure what but something. I was able to say that off of the minute greeting and hand shake. As time passed and I heard him speak he was such a showoff, macho guy. I didn’t like what he had to say which in my head proved my bad vibe feeling about him. I found psychologist Nalini Ambady’s study interesting, she showed the power of adaptive unconscious. I wonder if there is anything one the other person’s part, or object, or situation that effects one’s adaptive unconscious. For example one makes a bad judgment on someone and is right. Is their unconscious behavior or their intent coming out in a negative energy, which one can pick up. OR is there like this bad person scent of aura that we unconsciously pick up??? Huh weird. I actually want to look into this new field of psychology.

Separate note: Pancho’s uncle is still in the hospital!!! They performed another surgery to remove another abscess that formed in the time he had been in the hospital. I had a dream about Pancho’s uncle, that the doctors told us/family that he had something serious: his uncle would have to undergo various treatments to “make it” I did not share my dream with Pancho. Tomorrow we will have more information from the doctors, we are all hoping it is not bad.

The statue that did not look right

I found this piece interesting. I think it is funny when someone wants something to be true so badly and everyone around them thinks it's obviously not. I understand this feeling like when I desperately thought my boyfriend was being faithful and everyone around me new he wasn't. They did not know for a fact but the change in his behavior with me made it obvious. I did not think so because I couldn't see anything wrong, I was in love(like an idiot). Many people choose what they see and choose not to see the truth, no matter how many people tell them otherwise. This I think was true for the Getty. I think they chose to believe the statue was real evn when people began to see it was not.

The Statue That Did Not Look Right

After reading the short stories i chose The Statue That Did Not Look Right. After reading this story i learned something new about the Getty Museum In Los Angeles. I would have never known that they had to go trough all that trouble just to buy one statue. After 14 months of studying the statue the Getty museum still could not come up with a answer. It was then taken to many experts and it took them only one look to notice that something was not right with the statue. Another thing that i liked about this story was the second part of the story. They talk about how we as human think. They focused on the part of our brain that leaps to conclusion and it is called "adaptive unconscious". After reading this part of the story i want to learn more about this part of the brain to see how accurate this story is.

Paragraph 2 revised

Considered an outsider in my younger days. Not because of looking differently or acting differently, but because of my inability to speak English. Even though I was born and raised in the United States for some reason I had never learned the English language. It was May 31,1983 and Jaime Valadez was born in Montebello, CA.I remember growing up during the 80’s in the city of Bell Gardens, which by that time was already primarily Hispanics. At home both of my parents spoke Spanish only. Which made it that much more difficult for me to learn the English language. To this date my father still does not speak English. School began for me at an early age. In 1986 at the age of three I was enrolled in pre-school. Eventually came kindergarten, first, second and third grade. Still I had not learned the language. During that time everything seemed normal to me, since all the other kids and teachers spoke Spanish. Then in 1994 my family decided to buy a home in the near by city of Norwalk, CA and that’s when reality hit me and other people made me feel ignorant. Most kids in my new school spoke English and that alone put me in a venerable position. At that age kids can be cruel and they sure knew how to hurt me. About that time is when for the first time in my life I was being called names and teased. They called me anything from stupid, dumb to ignorant. At times I felt like they were right, because I could not even communicate with many of them in the English language. It was not until that age of thirteen that I began to better understand, read, write and speak English. With hard work and dedication and the help of teachers, friends and family. Looking back I am glad I came as far as I have. Like Plato in The Allegory of the Cave, says, “And when remembered his old habitation, and the wisdom of the den and his fellow-prisoners, do you not suppose that he would felicitate himself on the change and pity them” (27). The quote relates to me because after applying my self and learning the English language I can look back and felicitate my self on my accomplishment. I felt that with this new knowledge nothing can hold me back.

Revision Paragraph 2

I chose to reveal these past indiscretions, because people today suffer from depression. I have been battling these demons on a daily basis now and I know I am not the only one. I want people to know that they are not alone in this. These people may feel lost and bewildered like I did. What they have yet not realized, is that they will soon escape the darkness. They will soon see the light. The occurrence that opened up my blind eyes, scared the hell out of me. At first, I felt invincible, like a Marvel Comic superhero. I feared no one or anything. But later on, I was as scared as a yellow livered cat. It had come to the point where I thought flowers were talking to me. I thought that the people walking pass my house, were out to get me. I severely thought that someone was trying to kill me. It had turned out that I had a bad case of paranoia. The doctor told me Paranoia is a sign of depression. Like the lyrics in that Buffalo Springfield song, “Paranoia strikes deep. Into your life it will creep. It starts when you’re always afraid. You step out of line, the man come and they take you away” (For What It’s Worth,1969) These lyrics are haunting to me in a way, where it reminds me of when I was in my most horrible state. I feared that one day I would be taken away from my home in a rigid white stray jacket.

Revision of Paragraph 2(continued)

I remember finding a letter in my sisters bedroom written to my mother. My sister had written my mom stating that I needed help and that I should be put in a nut house. There were times where I took my anger out on her. One time after an altercation, I threw a brick at her. My actions were not justified. I had become this monster and I could not control my fury. My behavior was so appalling that it made her feel uneasy and fearful for her own life. She wanted me to seek psychiatric help! I was both shocked and hurt she would write such words. I felt betrayed, but then I also felt ashamed. After all, I was her older sister. I was supposed to be the prime example for my younger siblings, the “Golden Child.” To this day I have never confronted my sister about the dreaded letter, nor will I. She had her reasons and I completely understand. She just wanted me to get better. I think this experience is important today because the past always comes back to haunt me. The past will constantly test you and mock you. I recently came in contact with the people I used to hang out with, back in my bad era. They wanted to know what I was up to and if I wanted to hang out sometime. Another life test, I presume. I told them that I am not into the party scene anymore and that I have my priorities to think about. They did not understand me and I felt like I did not need to rationalize. I have chosen to move forward with my life, instead of taking a gigantic step backwards. Honestly, if I were to hang out with these so-called friends again I fear that I will revert to my old ways. But, I have got to keep my feet on the ground and not look back. Depression is an ongoing battle I fight everyday. But, it is a war that I will soon conquer. I want people to know that they have got to overlook all the negative energy in their lives. In Allegory of the Cave Plato discusses, “…such an one coming suddenly out of the sun to be replaced in his old situation; would be not be certain to have his eyes full of darkness?” (32). I could relate to this quote because If I had given in to the temptation of returning to my old ways, would I choose to be that ignorant? To go back to that period of my life, I would be lost in the darkness of my cave. The sun will be no where in sight and I honestly believe that there would be no turning back next time. My eyes would be full of darkness if I were to revert back. But by me admitting my weaknesses and knowing that I am not perfect, motivates me to get better. I must learn to have the strength to overcome the negativities in life so that I can face the many challenges of the future more constructively.

I am hoping someone can help me. I'm still confused on our outline & midterm essay. The first paragraph is our intro/explanation or analysis of the reading, correct? Then we have the 3 body paragraphs and the conclusion?

For the outline, can it be in any format? Or does Prof. Hsiao have a specific expectation? I don't know why I am so lost on this, probably because I missed 2 classes recently.

Thank you to anyone that can help me! :]

LA Walk for AIDS

I posted this earlier from my phone and of course it didn't post. Here we go again.

I woke up this morning at 5:45 and I was completely exhausted. I barely remember getting ready this morning. I was running late, so I rushed to get ready and drove from Fountain Valley to Cerritos College, to be one of the first people there. I was proud of myself, considering I've been late to class a lot lately. We tried to convince Mr. Hsiao to take us to breakfast, but he insisted we go to Alondras Hot Wings. Let me tell you, a buffalo chicken salad with ranch is not the most appealing breakfast, but it did the trick for the walk. The bus ride was fun talking with Cara, she cracks me up. When we got to the walk, I met up with my sister, best friend, and two guy friends. It was much easier to walk 6.2 miles with people I am close to and we caught up with each other a lot. It was great to have supporters cheering us on the entire way. We encountered some interesting people along the walk. On one of the rest stops, we were standing on the sidewalk when a lady with a small child screamed at us for standing on the sidewalk. She didn't ask us to move, just yelled "EXCUSE ME" quite rudly. I asked her not to be rude, and she kept yelling, using profound language. She even told my sister that "a b*tch will be slapped". I was shocked. Besides that, everyone was really nice. Towards the end of the walk we met some men dressed as women, creepy clowns. It was hilarious, my sister and I had to get a picture with one. Overall, we had a great time. I love being part of charities and being involved in the community. It was incredible to see how many people came out to support the AIDS Foundation. There weren't nearly as many people at the Leukemia Lymphoma Society Walk. We sat and waited for the bus for about 45 minutes and my butt started to hurt sitting on the sidewalk, but my legs didn't want me to be standing any longer. The ride home was peaceful. Everyone seemed exhausted and it was very quiet. I would definitely do the walk again, just not any time soon. :]

White people have everything handed to them or takes it from others for there own gain. This is the stereotype that is the most present in the past. A large percentage of Americans and all other countries believe that just because one is white, one having everything handed to one. In my life, there was nothing given to me. Everything that is in my position is so because of tireless work and having to prove myself everyday of my childhood. My story begins 1993. The year of famous movies like Jurassic Park, The Fugitive, The Firm, Sleepless in Seattle, Aladdin, Mrs. Doubtfire, and the Super Bowl XXVII came out Dallas Cowboys vs. Buffalo Bills. The final score was a resounding 52-17 and was the day my mother (Julie) and my father (Terry) made a choice that would damage my brother (Austin) and I for the rest of our life, choosing to divorce and Julie deciding to leave him and move to a different city. Not till years later did she say why she did all of that for us. But also during that time, the infamous stereotype was introduced to me. One of the closest people, my own father, thought that just because I am a specific race and being adopted that things come easier to me. My father did not only try to spread the word that I am getting everything I need and want, he also was willing to spend hundreds of his own dollars to prove it. Every time he tried, I would have to tell him that his patronage was not accepted. From that moment on, that little innocent kid had to fight, work, and do anything he could for everything he owns or will ever own. In the story of Homonyms, Giorgio Agamben states “According to the formulation of the paradox, both are and are not members of themselves.” (Agamben 5). This quote proves that not all things in one grouping are a part of that said group. Just because one fits all of the criteria to be a part of a serten unit, dose not always mean that person or object is meant to be a part of it. This is the case with most people including me.
