English 100 and 103

FORMAT:
When you blog, in the Title, write your first and last name as you would as if you are turning in a paper to me. Then you do not have to write my name because I know you are in my class. Write what English class you are in whether it is English 52, 60, 100 and what College.

For example, one would write:

In addition, for the title, pick the topic of discussion, grammar/organization, content, current events, pop culture or literature as a TITLE that we have discussed in class. Write the posts like this: write #1 Post or #2 Post or Post #50, so I can easily keep track of them and how many you write.

Of course, you are welcome to write more than several posts, and in doing so is another form of participation and does count in the participation grade. Perhaps, in class, you may not participate all that much but in the realm of the blogosphere, you can from the comfort of your own home,

* reflect on the day's class discussion or offer up an insight that you found particularly interesting, etc., etc.
*

* How does it change the way you think or thought before on the subject?
*

* What actions might you take in the future? Anything is open to interpretation.

Of course, I need not go on and on about being respectful towards your peers' opinions and beliefs. If you disagree with another student's views be discreet about it: Do not say so and so is completely wrong because of this and that. Instead, say, I disagree with so and so and here are the reasons why I do. Go after their evidence and support and do not, I repeat do not attack someone else personally. This is supposed to be a forum for everyone to share their ideas and views.

*I will enforce the blogosphere by either deleting your hard work, making an example out of you here in the realm of the blogosphere or in class* . . .

I have 2 daughters one 9 and the other 8 months. I have raised my oldest daughter to be a good person, to think of others, help people when they need to be helped, to respect people, not tell the truth, share, give, and other things. I teach these things because that is what good people do not because God said so. I do not want my daughter fearing her actions because of God but because of what her actions/decisions can do and hurt the people around her. Does that make sense? I was offended that this guy was telling me that “ok you may do all those things but, when you do them through God then it is noticed” WTF I really wanted to keep talking to this guy but I had to go to class. I do not look down on people who have a certain religion/faith and follow it, in fact I respect it. If that is what move you then who am I to say you are wrong. The other day I was driving through Compton and while at a red light I noticed two young guys on bike, white shirts, and helmets. Can you guess what religion they followed? I thought to myself how awesome it is for someone to give up two years of their life to be placed somewhere you have never been to spread your message. I will gladly hear anyone’s message/religion/faith as long as you do not try to convert me and if you are willing to hear what I have to say about what I think. Ok back to a simple path and an open mind. The message is great: serve humanity and develop good human beings. If EVERYONE followed the concept that we are all equal and one’s wish is for happiness how great would we be??? If everyone respected each other and even followed this simple prayer” May the poor find wealth, those weak with sorrow find joy. May the forlorn find new hope, Constant happiness and prosperity. May the frightened cease to be afraid, and those bound to be free. May the weak find power, and may their hearts join in friendship.” Line 17 It wouldn’t what religion we followed now would it.

As soon as I started reading A Simple Path by the Dalai Lama, I knew which reading I wanted to post on. Although I dont subscribe to any religion, Buddhism has always been appealing to me. I believe that to follow Buddhism you have to truly understand the spiritual aspects of it. Its not about following certain rules or living up to someone else's vision of how you should be. From what I have read about Buddhism, it centers on the well being of the individual. I like that, in this religion, true lightness comes from the inside; its all mental.
I also love how in tune Buddhism is with nature. Buddhist Dharmas never underestimate the power of the natural world.
One of my favorite books is Jack Kerouac's The Dharma Bums. In it, Kerouac depicts beautiful mountainous scenes and ties them in with some of the most profound works of Buddhist scriptures. Upon reading Kerouac's various works I always find myself surprised at how drawn i am to the Buddhist religion.
But after reading An Open Heart, I realized that I still have a long way to go if I ever hope to choose a religion to follow. To me, the idea of non-violence is nice, but illogical. I understand that it is not meant to be easy, nor am I saying it is impossible, but I dont believe it logical to want people to put aside anger and aggression to maintain peace. Its not the way humans are programmed to work.
Buddhist's methods of keeping peace are very admirable, but not reasonable request for people to follow.

A Simple Path and An Open Heart.

The Dalai Lama sends out a very important message that I believe everyone should keep in mind when talking about different religions.
"The point is that through these different traditions, a very negative person can be transformed into a good person. That is the purpose of religion-and that is the actual result." When i read this i thought about how people react when faced with a problem so severe they just want to be left alone. This alone time is used to reflect and think about the situation. Sometimes when there is nobody to turn to all one has is thereselves and God in whatever religion one chooses to follow. This God and through God people better themselves. It helps them keep their sanity when they are in the brink of losing it. This God helps them through the toughest of times. All this can be seen as negative but with time transformed into postive with the help of religion. Since The Dalai Lama is a promoter of peace and unity he acknowledges the result and impact different religions have on different people. Since it is a positive effect it is a good effect as long as it develops a good heart. He understands that through philosophical views and rites all relgions differ but stand on a common ground. This common ground is that they advocate love, compassion, and forgiveness.

A Simple Path and An Open Heart

Growing up in a Christian church and school I have seen many ways in which people try to spread the word of God. Some do it in a good way and others in a bad way. While i was reading this I really liked the way that he was talking about his religion. He did not try to convert anyone to Buddism but rather talked about it and explained why he belives what he believes. I really like the way he talked about other religions not putting them down but saying that to some it might be weird wo belive what he believes and thats how he feels about the other religions. it cool to actually be learning about this religion instead of having your religion and what you believe in bashed, or them trying to convert you.

A Simple Path and An Open Heart by Dalai Lama

After reading this piece I felt peaceful. Even though Im not Buddist I love the serenity that Dalai Lama had brought out especially when he states on An Open Heart parragraph 1 "If we have positive mental attitude, then even when surrounded by hostility, we shall notlack inner peace... So, mental attitude is very important:it makes a real difference to our state of happiness." This is very true we can easily be persuaded with negativity when things go wrong or someone emphasizes the bad side of anything. It is a mental mind to drive our happiness or sadness. In points I feel down but somehow I manage to get up the ground to be on that tower again even what my surroundings are. This can apply to anyone, any religion one pursues or has devotion towards we all have a mental mind that needs to be driven in a peaceful direction.

The Dalai Lama

Throughout both of these texts, Agamben's Homonyms came to mind over and over.

In P1 of A Simple Path he speaks of "good human beings" and immediately clarifies his personal definition for the word "good" in this instance, not allowing the reader to come to his/her own conclusion on the idea.

In An Open Heart he notes in the opening paragraph: "The differences are minor. Our mental and emotional similarity is what is important." The theme goes on along with the text and this quote. He seeks to bring unity amongst mankind, crossing lines of religion that are often the most boldy drawn. He talks little of differences between religions, and he notes the similar, core themes as being "love, compassion, and forgiveness" while crossing all lines of religion to reach out to those with a secular view of life.

This piece was really interesting for me, and although I have a heavy disagreement and a finding of contradiction here, I did take one beautiful paragraph that I can agree with whole-heartedly, P1 of AOH. The opening sentence reads, "If we have a positive mental attitude, then even when surrounded by hostility, we shall not lack inner peace." This correlates so well with one of my favorite quotes, which is found in Frankl's Man's Search for Meaning, a quote that is credited to yet another author, Spinoza...
"Emotion, which is suffering, ceases to be suffering as soon as we form a clear and precise picture of it."

Whether one experiences suffering or not in any given circumstance is not contingent upon the circumstance itself; rather, it is the state of mind that is and the perception and/or understanding of that circumstance which determines suffering or not.

a simple path and an open heart

this story by dalai lama was interesting to read. it was basic ans straight forward. it aws actually the first story that i did not have to read over and over or break it down to make sense of it. but even then, even as simple and basic and straight forward as it was...there was a strong message behind the entire simplicity. i was surprised that i understood the whole thing because i usually do not comprehend other religion. i was not raised with sufficient knowledge of my own religion so i usually do not say much when it comes down to religious discussions. anyway, what i got across is that any religion that one would follow will become a good person as oppose of a negative person. if one does not follow any religion they may not deny this verse: "may the frightened cease to be afraid, and those bound be free, may the weak find power, and may their hearts join in friendship" who would not want any of that? lama also goes about saying that we should respect eachothers religion the fact that there is great potential in all. he admits that he believes buddhism is the best religion from his perspective but explains that it is not for everyone and fathoms the philosophy of other religions. if everyone were as open minded and agreeable to that there will be less hostility and more inner peace. like sandra mentioned, dont discuss your religion to convert but to spread the knowledge of it. and in return listen to our creed. we shouldnt have to listen to discssions on what religion is better... we should hear the potential and respect ones religious beliefs.

A Simple Path and An Open Heart

I really enjoyed reading The Dalai Lama’s short excerpt because it was straight to the point, bluntly told as to how it is, and blows the reader away with his philosophical beliefs. What I love the most was his belief in ”us” and “them”. I have thought much about everyone as neighbors and the world as one, but he brought up an interesting point that is so simple. Once we start dividing territories up, we begin to segregate ourselves and distinguish the differences among us. This further leads to a power struggle and creates a pool of enemies and allies for future conflicts. And this will continue in a cycle as we see others as “them” and we as “us.” The world will be a much better place if everyone saw each other as brothers and sisters, neighbors, or humankind uniting as one…

Man’s search for meaning is a very powerful book I have not read from cover to cover ,but what I have read is just as powerful. No matter what you are going on in your life someone is going through a lot worse. Mr. frankl has been and see more in his life then one should ever have to. He is saying that no one can take away you mind from you. What is inside you love your life your memories can not be stiripped away. You will always have things that change your life in many way some for the better some for the worse. During all of his life he was noy given anything but death. During all of this hard times in life keep what you have in your mind.

A Simple Path and An Open Mind

Since I was born and raised in a Catholic household I was curious when the Dalai Lama kept talking about the Four Noble Truths. After doing a quick search, I found that The Four Noble Truths is a fundamental Buddhist teaching. The truths relate to suffering; its nature, origin, cessation (ceasing of), and the path leading to its cessation. In A Simple Path, he talks about the many religions and how each individual will respond differently when asked which is the best. He also goes on to say that no matter what religion you follow everyone should appreciate each religion's potential and respect those who follow them. In An Open Heart he starts off by saying that everyone wants happiness and that all of us are the same mentally and emotionally. Throughout the second piece, the Dalai Lama emphasizes that everyone is the same and that when looked at from afar, we are all part of the same planet. He also addresses the conflicts incurred by humanity and just like MLK calls for a nonviolent approach to solving those problems.

A Simple Path and An Open Heart by the Dalai Lama.
I have been sitting in the hospital since 12:00pm with my dad, and have been sitting here I reading the assignments for the weekend. I was highlighting what I thought was important and after I was done highlighting I realized this whole story is important. Let me tell you why this entire reading is important. The Dalai Lama continually wrote “...our potential is equal”. While reading this I could not help to think I am sitting in this hospital and everyone is equal. No matter what kind of person they are, what kind of disease or illness they have, everyone is made up with the same genetic orientation (two eyes, two hands, one heart, one brain, ect.) and everyone has their own opinion on life. Every person has the same potential to grow up as a person with a good mental disposition or a negative disposition. If or when a person encounters a negative situation a person has two decisions, always. The person can handle the situation in a positive way and learn from what happened, or they leave the situation in a sour way and take nothing from what happened. The Dalai Lama was saying no matter what the religious background the person has people always intend for others to have three things. All religions practice love, compassion, and forgiveness. The Dalai Lama also stated that even those with no religious backgrounds at all agree that those three components are what the world needs. How does a human being achieve such components when the world surrounding them is so negative?

kayla said...

The Dalai Lama had stated two things that come into play for a person to live life as a humble person and those were 1) A good mental attitude and 2) Inner strength. I agree with the Dalai Lama, until a person has a positive mental attitude a person will not have a warm heart. Thus causing a person to be a ‘Debby Downer’ or someone who is constantly upset about one thing or another. Not that I am saying a person should always go around having a huge smile on their face all the time, but when a situation arises when someone they do not know needs help I think that a person should put forth effort to help the other person. Every human being is the same with a different past and until people realize that just because the past is different does not mean the human being is a beast. I do not think that the wars or fighting will stop happening. No matter what a war will never solve anything and threatening will only make matters worse. Until we, as human beings, realize that fighting and arguing is no way to make solve a confrontation the world cannot succeed. This brings me back to my hospital stay. Each and every nurse in the hospital do not judge. They do not say ‘Well this is the guy that ran the red light and injured this seven year old girl. We should not help him, instead we should focus on the girl.’ The nurses treat him as another life to save. The nurses treat him as a person, not as someone who ran a red light and injured an innocent seven year old girl. Each nurse sees a patient the way the Dalai Lama sees a person with another religion, just as a person who may think opposite of his beliefs, but as a patient who needs their help.

When in high school Mr. Hsiao had brought up the Man Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankl and we had read a few paragraphs from the book. I was so intrigued by the few paragraphs we had read I went out and bought the book (plus there was an extra credit book report assignment), so anyone who is interested in these few short paragraphs I definitely recommend going out and by the book. The book is a short read but the way Viktor Frankl tells out the story is so amazing and so touching I could not help but to think how fortunate of a life I am living. No one is throwing a rock at me, and no one is telling me that I am worthless. Frustration is a great description while reading what Frankl had said about how he was treated while being in the Concentration Camps. I could not help but wonder why in the world no one was here helping these poor innocent people, who had absolutely everything taken away, besides their freedom. The freedom to hope, dream, and reminisce can never be taken away. Anyways go get the book if you were interested in the two pages.

While being at the hospital I have been thinking how important family is. Life only takes on turn until one realizes that family is everything. Learning about ones past about uncles, aunts, grandmothers, grandfathers, and so on is important because if one never asks one will never find out. With my dad being in the hospital my family has gathered, and I realized how important life is to have family around and not isolate those who you love and love you back from one another. I was not able to meet my grandfather or my grandmother from my dad’s side, and while being here at the hospital we have talked about everything. For instance my dad use to have an afro, I never would have guessed that. Another thing I learned was my grandpa worked at a factory that made the boxes for cigarettes and he would never have a set schedule. I also learned that he loved doughnuts and that he was a cowboy. I have learned that I am a 7th generation Californian and that my grandmother’s side settled into the missions in the 1800s and she had the best chocolate chip cookies. I strongly urge everyone to ask their parents about their backgrounds and ask what things were like while they were growing up because one may lose the opportunity and I, personally, would not want to live life with what if I had asked this or that.

I think the essay is very honest. The author simply talks about Buddhism in a very relaxing way. He compares Buddism with Christinity but respects both of the religion's ideas.I like last sentence at the end of A Simple Path, it states : Different traditions do not really matter as long as a very bad person can be transformed into a good person. I agree with this idea because religion does teach us to become a better person.
The Open Heart 's main idea is similar to its title. We must have a heart that readily opens/ accept everyone. This includes that we should not seek for " material benefit or violence" but our inner values so that everyone would care/love each others and the society becomes better.

A Simple Path and An Open Heart

I've heard of the Dalai Lama before and have seen pictures of him, but I have never read anything about him nor read anyting by him. I thought the Dalai Lama was just a religious Tibent leader/ guide. When I read his two letters, A Simple Path and An Open Heart, I would not have guessed how easy to read and understand they would be. The moment I read An Open Heart, I immediately felt some kind of connection to what he is saying. Maybe it was the 12 years of Catholic school teachings in me, or just commom sense, but his first sentence of "I believe that every human has an innate desire for happiness and does not want to suffer" really stuck to me. His whole talk is about how our attitude on life really affects our state of happiness. Everybody, especially girls on my team, are always saying that I am way to optmistic and that I need to be more realistic, but I am not going to change the way I think because it is what makes me happy and gets me through the day. His whole talk on how everyone is the same and that no matter what religion we serve, if any at all, the basis is always about love, compassion, and forgiveness. This also relates back to happiness, because if we have love, compassion, and forgiveness then we can be internally happy.

Dalai Lama(spellcheck?)

I disagreed with one statement the Dhalai Lama said. Rather, one concept he brought up: the concept of 'us' and 'them'. While i agree, that under the term 'humanity', we are all one, and have many common interests and goals. But to say we should relinquish us and them is in my mind irresponsible. there are plenty of them/us categories that serve a well meaningful purpose. Dictators/Presidents, haters/lovers, those that would steal from others/those that would give to others. This reading was uplifting, but it was just that, as soon as the book is closed its back to reality. Coerced coexistence cannot exist(say that 3 times fast). Is peace worth war? If i could be certain that the next war would end all wars...would i care if it was waged?

I agree with him, all religions to promote good, and i believe religion as a whole is better for humanity than secularity. THere is one thing i didnt see in this reading, a them/us dilemma about the past and present. I never owned a slave, therefore i shouldnt owe anything to reparations. I never went on a crusade, therefore i should not be held accountable to twelfth century christians. In treating each human being as that, a completely separate flavor in a jar of jellybeans, a lot of hate and descrimination could end. But its just like cancer, saving half your body doesnt save your life.

IN closing, I found his little poem at the end to be idiotic. I dont mean to insult one with such stature, and one high above my meager mind, but that is the perfect word to descrive it. The fact that he said it after describing buddhism makes it idiotic. "we must not harm others interests when pursuing our own interests"(paraphrased). WHat if our interests are at odds?

Peace is like a friendship: you laugh, you argue, you fight, you beat eachother up, you pout a little bit, you make up, and you laugh again. But no laugh lasts forever. Even heroes cry.

The Dalai Lama

The message in this writing comes down to respecting others and having a positive mental attitude. We must respect others and their beliefs because essentially everyone is equal and has the potential of finding happiness. It does not matter where a person comes from or how much money a person has because everyone has potential. In my understanding of the Buddhist teachings, I think Buddhism is the mountaintop that takes every concept of religion and fuses it together. Every concept of religion has similiar characteristics. "They all advocate love, compassion, and forgiveness" (9). According to The Dalai Lama, the purpose of religion is to transform a very negative person into a good person. By "good" we mean to have a good and more compassionate heart. And having a compassionate heart and caring for others will bring one to gain inner strength. We must use this inner strength and compassion to promote nonviolence. Essentially we are all equal living in the same world and having the same neighboring interests. Once we truly understand the concept of "us" and "them", we will be closer to nonviolence because we are the same. As it has been said, "As long as we are part of human society, it is important to be a kind, warm-hearted person" (17).

A Simple and An Open Heart

I enjoyed reading this piece by Dalai Lama because it is straight forward, honest, and easier to understand compare to the other readings. In A Simple Path he starts off by discussing about the Four Noble Truths. When I first read that term it was somewhat new to me because I was raised up in a Catholic religion so reflecting back with that term didn't really came-up to me. He simplified it by saying that it's the very foundation of the Buddhist teachings and was honest that if one is not familiar with it and doesn't have any experience with the Truths that Buddhism will be a difficult religion to practice. I like how Dalai Lama treats every religion to be equal. Even though he practices Buddhism he still says that it totally depends on the individual what religion he/she wants to practice. He also pointed out that a very negative person can be transformed into a good hearted one because that is one kind of result that a religion can give to an individual. He also said that all religions have the same potential and each of us should respect other religions for being that way. In An Open Heart he starts off by discussing that everyone wants to attain happiness in their lives and that everyone has the same potential to achieve that happiness. He stated that we are all the same in terms of our mental and emotional process and outer definitions of our race doesn't matter. Dalai Lama also pointed out that a lot of people are neglecting their values because of putting too much emphasis on material development. I like what he stated, "We must therefore develop a better balance between material preoccupations and inner spiritual growth" (2). He also pointed out that the problems that we are currently facing today are man-made problems in terms of war, conflicts, etc... Dalai Lama also said that if our planet is viewed from outer space it can be seen as one whole piece. It is when you get closer when you see the divisions that separate each countries and the humanity. Towards the end, he stated a line that was special to him and stated that everyone have and should be warmhearted to each other.

Satyagraha: Civil Disobedience, Passive Resistance, Non-Co-operation by Mohandas K. Gandhi

Satyagraha (satyāgraha) is the method and belief of nonviolent resistance by Mohandas Gandhi. The impression I got from reading this literature was that Gandhi ,like The Dalai Lama was against violence. He believed that violence was not necessary and that “man is not capable of knowing the absolute truth, and therefore, not competent to punish”(Gandhi 1) From what I understand, is that when you are in a tiff with somebody, at the end of the argument do you really even know what you are fighting about? It is just wasted energy. In the end it really does not matter. What are we fighting for ? Gandhi thought that if people can think rationally and not act on impulse, this world would be a more civil union. He wanted people to feel safe in their own homes. To not be afraid to live. In today’s world you are not safe in your own home. Anything could happen. I am not trying to scare anyone, but that is reality. Gandhi also pointed out that non-violence does not intend us to degrade ourselves while cooperating in any given situation. We will stand with our heads held high and LIVE! We will not live in fear. If we choose to live in fear, so many people will take advantage of the situation. We must not let them. But, we must not challenge them either. An act of violence will alter our futures. No one is perfect, but violence is no excuse.

Has anyone heard of that movie, "Paranormal Activity"? I think it is only playing in select theaters. You can catch the preview on Youtube. It looks really creepy and it is filmed like the movie, "Blair Witch." I don't know about you all, but I thought "Blair Witch" was a cool concept. It was very interesting, even though it wasn't real actual footage. Does anyone here believe in ghosts? Halloween is coming up does anyone have any real true ghost stories they would like to share?

Satyagraha: Civil Disobedience, Passive Resistance, Non-Co-operation by Mohandas K. Gandhi

It seems like a lot more people are writing on The Dalai Lama piece, so I will write about Gandhi. The tone of this piece is amazing. Gandhi can write so calmly about something and be so peaceful. At the same time, however, its almost as he is angry with what is going on in this world. he is angry about all the wars, fighting, and deaths caused by other men to other men. He tries to get the reader to understand truth. He says that nobody knows all truth, but if we can picture it we will make the right choices. He says that truth brings peaceful circumstances, such as bringing down tyrants. A big subject in this piece was being a martyr (dying for something you believe in). Gandhi says it is better to die in truth, not fighting back to the dictator than it would be to go out in a rage. It will basically drive the dictator to the point of going crazy because all of these people that are being killed are welcoming the death. Gandhi stated to walk towards the bullet and press the gun up against your breast. If they shoot you for nothing you have done, future persons will see your deed and follow your paths. Basically, die for what is good, and true.

A Simple Path

While reading the Dalai Lama's reasoning and thoughts on religion, I couldn't help but admire his words. I grew up in a Catholic household in which I wasn't forced to go to church every Sunday, but I was baptized and continued on to confirmation. I found these practices boring and unrealistic, and soon began challenging the ideas of the church....My Mother loved this!! The Catholic religion was overwhelming to me. Because of my inability to relate to the church's ways, I began backing away from the idea of one religion. How could just one religion satisfy every persons needs? I feel very strongly about this question and admire Dalai Lama's response "if it does not suit a particular person, what is the use in explaining it?" I believe this is his way of saying that everyone interprets things differently. One must pick a life path and religion that suits them best. Having said that he also expresses his belief in religion as a whole. The Dalai Lama supports all things that encourage people to be better individuals, and religion is one of those things. Although, he is the biggest supporter of the Buddhist religion, he doesn't belittle the many other religious paths. For his open minded perspective on life I admire him.

Yeah, I've heard of that movie too. Sadly though the closest theater from my place that's showing it is in LA and I think it's already sold out too. I got interested when I saw the trailer of this movie. It may seem funny but when I saw that trailer I kinda have a habit of keep looking in back of me. Lol. Hopefully they're gonna have more theaters here in OC for that movie. I'm interested to see that movie.

Man's Searching for Meaning
I knew what the situation Frankl was in after reading the first line of paragraph five; he was in the Holocaust. The way he described his worn muscles and draped skin immediately brought my mind to a documentary I saw concerning the Holocaust. The image he was describing was finite with real scenes documented in the film. After describing himself as a second natured human in the guard’s eyes he recalls everyone predicted death. I was common for him to say, "He won’t last long." His writing is almost like fill in the blank, but we all get the powerful scene still. I find it interesting how in paragraph eight he begin to talk of spiritual and intellectual strength, I guess that all they had left within their skin because even their sexual drive was gone. The spiritual intellectual drive I assume is what keeps them alive, when every single other amenity has literally been taken from them. He describes spiritual freedom as inner riches, because the mind and spirit conjoin as one and to keep one you have to keep the other. Living on Auschwitz or Dachau was in itself a ploy to rid one or all of their inner riches. He then goes on to say how dead he was, because the image of his wife, dead or alive, brought the same sentiment. Then again he lack of emotion, lack of life made him unsure whether or not he was alive. As he comes to his death his past becomes vivid along with his the images his eyes capture, they take him into a trance away from where he is. He noticed as I had the when I was pushed from my cave, the actions of people. How in the wake of death, everyone still had a choice, whether to submit or not to a physical control stronger than yours. Whether we recognize our emotions as suffering or decide to paint a clearer picture we have decisions to make up till death on whether or not we are still alive.

Today I dealt with Directv. Directv had told me that I needed to make a payment. I told them I would. I gave the payment on October 2nd. Then they called me on October 4th and I missed the call. Then they called me again on October 5th. I thought what the heck are they calling me for again I already made the payment. I told my boyfriend to call and then they said your payment did not go through, but the lady that I talked to on the October 4th said your payment was accepted. So i called to make the payment once again, but now the payment price has gone up. Then the new lady said I never called or tried to make a payment on October 2nd. I said what how did they just tell my boyfriend earlier today my payment did not go through. She then told me yes I do show that you called. I said wait you just told me earlier that it did not. I now got a upset tone in my voice and I gave my card to a person who took those numbers, but I now have no idea what I gave my number to. She then told me ma'ma you need to pay this higher price to get your cable turned on. I said I do not need it on and my boyfriend had told them to turn it off for temporarily because he was moving to California. Now I was fuming, I then said you know what I need to speak to a supervisor because I am not getting anywhere with you. Then I had to state the story all over again...he then said I am sorry all of it and you can pay your payment of such price and all will be okay. He made a mistake and heard the price wrong that I paid first by ten dollars less. I was not going to argue, but it was his fault. All is better, but the first associate could have alleviated it by making the price I said in the first place. That was my night experience after taking my Psychology class.

The Dalai Lama

I love the four truths and agree with the beleifs. I found it interesting that my beleifs were here in these pieces of liturature but I never heard anyone put them into words so elequently.
"If we have a positive mental attitude, then even when surrounded by hositility, weshall not lack inner peace. On the other hand, if our mental attitude is more negative, influenced by fear, suspicion, helplessness, or self-loathing, we shall not be happy. So, Mental attitude is very improtant: it makes a real difference to our state of happiness." I have learned this in another area of my life and try to live by it One Day at a Time. when the reading talks about material luxury I find that it is a matter of wanting stuff or wanting to be happy. I am gratefull that this was a required reading because I don't know that I would have picked it up otherwise. The two final paragraphs are something I am going to start using as well

May the poor find wealth,
Those weak with sorrow find joy.
May the forlorn find new hope,
Constant happiness and prosperity.

May the frightened cease to be afraid,
an those bound be free.
May the weak find power,
and may their hearts join in friendship.

The Dalai Lama

I never realized how inclusive the Dalai Lama’s teachings were before reading this essay. I really enjoyed the first part because I feel like the world’s religions are all very similar and I feel like they all teach the same basic things and that people need to stop having the “us” against “them” attitude because it does nothing positive in this world. I like that he is talking to everyone, and not just to one group of people. Of course he believes Buddhism to be the best for the world religions, but he is not trying to force it on people as the other religions sometimes do.

I especially loved his four truths because I feel that they hold true for everyone, and not just for a particular group of people. I also like his prayers, especially the ending of the essay:

May the poor find wealth,
Those weak with sorrow find joy.
May the forlorn find new hope,
Constant happiness and prosperity.

May the frightened cease to be afraid,
an those bound be free.
May the weak find power,
and may their hearts join in friendship.

I think these are beautiful thoughts. May the poor find wealth, the weak with sorrow find joy and the forlorn find hope…this is how we should all feel. Instead of being jealous and bitchy and in competition with each other we should be trying to build one another up to make this world a better place.

I took a lot out of this essay and I think those two paragraphs listed above will become something I keep in my mind on a daily basis. Just like the serenity prayer helps keep me at peace, these prayers will help keep my heart from growing hard.

Satyagraha: Civil Disobedience, Passive Resistance, Non-Co-operation by Mohandas K. Ghandhi

When I read this, I thought that he is a strong believer in non violence. He does though how ever to want people to stand up for what they believe in. Not to be scared to stand up for what you believe in or know is right. I think instead of fighting with someone you kill them with kindness. This kindness to Ghandi might mean to talk to people as though you know all so that they have no way to come back at you. If fight someone with violence you give in to them and you guys are both losers in the outcome. fighting does not solve anything. I do know that when I am mad or upset and I got work I will put in my pocket and not let it involved in work issues. I do know that Ghandi wants people to talk, and I do just not right away.

When I got in a fight in high school. There were a bunch of girls who did not like me because I played football with there boyfriends. It was not that I wanted to be with there boyfriends it was just that I loved football. I was also close to there boyfriends because I played football with them. To me Ghandi said regarded the weapon of the weak, then I was at one point surround by guys and girls who wanted to jump me. I then said to the girl she was not going to anything, she said watch. Nothing happened so I tipped toed to her level and said that is what I thought. I stood my ground and did not back down, but I did know that I called he bluff. I stood up without fighting. This to me is killing a person with non-violence. This is what I got out of this.

A Simple Path & An Open Heart by The Dalai Lama

I absolutely love these readings. I am by no means a religious person, but I strongly believe in the freedom to practice one's religion. I've never developed into my own religion, but I strive to be a "good" human being. I genuinely care about others and I am accepting to all religious faiths. I do not look at others as ignorant or stupid for practicing a specific religion. Instead, I listen and try to understand their ideas and values. In An Open Heart, my favorite quotes are "Spiritual growth need not be based on religious faith" and "They all advocate love, compassion, and forgiveness." I like both of these quotes because they both stand for what I believe in. Like I said, I am not religious. Recently, I have been finding meaning and compassion in everything I do. I feel that I have been experiencing spiritual growth. I talk about it a lot with my older sister, who feels the same way as I. The words and sentence structure the Dalai Lama uses is so strong and compelling. "May the poor find wealth, those weark with sorrow find joy. May the forlorn find new hope, constand happiness and prosperity. May the frightened cease to be afraid, and those bound be free. May the wear find poer, and may their hearts join in friendship." This quote expresses how passionate the Dalai Lama is. One can't help but be drawn to the Dalai Lama's lessons.

Man's Search for Meaning by Victor E Frank!

Reading the first couple of paragraphs I got that this story was a sense hope. When he talked about how people use to tell who would be next to go by how they looked. I could never imagine being that person who knew you were next as well as everyone around you.

When I use to play water polo the pool that I swam in was extremely cold. The pool was outdoors and not heated because it was broken at that time. I was January which was winter so when we would swim it was so hard to breath. When you were swimming it felt like your insides were caving in and that you were not going to able to make one more breath.

When he stated he would shovel to clear holes, trails and roads. He had tried so hard to catch his breath because it was so cold. He stopped. He stopped and the guard did not beat it just showed him that he was nothing by throwing rocks at them like they were animals. You would show them little or less regard because it was a way of punishment.

I know that I was to get in trouble because I had to catch my breath. i know that I would get treated with some type regard. I also know that I was not put under dieing circumstances. I would be able to live the next day and the next day while playing a sport. This job that they did was in order to survive.

His goal was just to survive because of his wife. He had accepted all that he was could because he knew if he did he would live. Striving for life was all he had. Now he came out in the long run able to tell his story to all. His story on how he survived. With me being cold I did not need to strive to live in cold. I just needed to push myself to swim hard and faster. I may have gotten yelled at my coach, but that pushed me to work. Living pushed him just like yelling pushed me to become a better athlete. I know I still have more respect for him because he endured so much more then me.

The Dalai Lama
It is always great reading about Buddhism. A Simple Path. The Dalai Lama does not dive into explaining Buddhism (The Four Noble Truths), but instead he speaks about human beings and their association with other religions. Instead of looking at a religions philosophy, he instead looks at the potential and the idea of religion. He wanted to look at religion in an unbiased point of view.
In An Open Heart, The Dalai Lama states the purpose of life. It is to experience happiness, something I strongly agree with. In our own state of mind, we must be happy in order to be happy with our surroundings. Materialism will always lead to wanting more, causing a certain desire that any of us will want to fulfill. The desire will keep growing and growing, and therefore, we will never be truly happy (This is part of the idea of The Four Noble Truths). In order to be truly happy, we must detach ourselves from our worldly possessions, Buddhism teaches. The Dalai Lama does not speak about detachment, but instead he speaks about how important inner spiritual growth is. The value of the mind has a far greater value then of the surroundings. He then leads us to human nature, and the problems we face today. He emphasizes the point that we are the same, and in hurting our enemies we hurt ourselves. He has such great faith in the human race, that we have gone a long ways believing that the one-sided victory is no longer relevant.
The message between both passages is simple, we are not different from one another, nor does religion differ from one another because the idea overall is that "...a very negative person can be transformed into a good person. That is the purpose of religion..." (8). Acceptance, tolerance, and respect should be the result of learning this. These borders the world, and us, establish between religions and ourselves, simply because of minor differences, are illusions that we need to erase in order to fulfill an understanding of unity between each other, and ourselves.

"...all beings are equal to one in one's wish for happiness and desire to overcome suffering." In combination with paragraphs 17 and 18, reading this really makes me happy.

A Simple Path and An Open Heartby the Dalai Lama

I enjoyed reading this article very much. It expresses my basic thinking, although I do see the problems that arise with it. His ideals are not necessarily utopian, but to achieve them would be. I mean, what he is saying is not far fetched; everyone look out for each other and make decisions with not only yourselves in mind. However, in this selfish society, it would never pass. I have always believed in the greater good of humanity, but it seems like most people are concerned with themselves. It is somewhat understandable (with all the bills that everyone must pay). I respect his stance about the openness of his religious philosophy. He has his own beliefs, but is understanding and respectful of others views. I interpret that he thinks that all religions are equal; there are many people in this world, so some religions appeal to some people more than others. I agree about the misplaced values in society. Material objects can only take you so far. To be stable mentally and spiritually should be much more desirable than financial success. However, it is not. Violence is embedded in our DNA I believe. I do not believe there will ever be a time where violence is void in a society. Sometimes, violence is necessary. To protect oneself, one might have to get violent. I also liked how he addressed the nonreligious crowd. He explained how they could relate to this philosophy as well. I would say that this was generally upbeat, however, I feel disappointment. I know that this simple, humane way of living could never be the norm.

A Simple Path and an Open Heart

I was really intrigued with this reading from beginning to end. I found myself relating to what the Dalai Lama was saying and his messages were unifying. There are many religions in the world today and as he said they all mostly have the same central message. When you yourself practice one religion it is easy to get caught up in it and think that anyone who tries to challenge your beliefs is wrong. I think it is hard for some people to accept that everyone is equal and has the same potential to be anything they choose. After reading this I can honestly say I do not have that big of an open mind for other religions, but realize that is not doing any good for me or anyone else. Religion is a form of unification and once we start to accept the teachings and idea of other religions our world may become a happier place.

i almost forgot to post!!! D: anyway, i read the dalai lama story about an open heart and a simple path. i really enjoyed that in the story, he never once said that his religion, buddist, was better. he told the reader different ways to get closer to god or how to become a much more relaxed person. in the buddist religion, meditation is very important and even though they dont believe in one god in particular, they do believe in and after life and spirits. the religion was very different in the one that i was "supposed" to be brought up in. i am not a very religious person and dont think i ever will be but this story was set up for all sorts of readers to enjoy and wasnt pushing anyone to be in a specific religion. dont know how many times people have tried to convert me to their side,....i like my side thank you very much.

A Simple Path and An Open Heart by The Dalai Lama

I enjoyed reading both of these excerpts about Buddhism and the direct and their straight forward philosophies. The thought that everyone can coincide and all is equal is a far stretch, but is what everyone should stride for. It is true that everyone is given the same potential. Whether they take the opportunities that they are give is their choice, but they are given the freedoms. I do agree and can see that many religions overlap and share common beliefs and that it is getting harder for one to just choose one. Religions have become a melting pot and we are all one as long as we all have the same purpose in changing bad to good and bettering our world. Our emotional status does affect us and the way that we take thing in around us. Having a positive outlook is for the better of the people and gives us happiness. Strength and confidence can ward off many evils and is more powerful than money and materialistic things. Simplicity and love is what I think is the overall message that the Dalai Lama is trying to give to us.

I really liked this excerpt. This class is always weird in terms of the reading expands my thoughts.

When I went to Church with my boyfriend a while back, I had realized that growing up in an environment like that was very healthy. I mean, yes, these children are being forced the religion, however, they are learning to be great people while having fun.

I know that a parent would want their child, regardless of the religion or demographics, to grow up to be a kind-hearted person. I think religion, indeed, is a great way of teaching that to young kids.

I really do not like that for many, religion is so fun as a little kid, and they benefit so much from it... Yet when they are grown up, they do not want anything to do with it, or they are sick of being forced.

"If we looked down at the world from space, we would not see any demarcations of national boundaries. We would simply see the small planet, just one."

I feel like this sort of supports my thought earlier about the "alien attack." I mean, I went really far out there in my thoughts, but I think this is what I meant to say. Boundaries are all man-made, therefore many of the conflicts we have are man-made.

Gosh, I wish more people thought about things like The Dalai Lama!

Man's Search for Meaning

I chose to post on this essay because I don't think enough people appreciate that last human freedom that Frankl says can never be taken away, myself included. These paragraphs seemed to speak to me and the attitude that I have had for the past few weeks.

I agree with Frankl when he says that the one thing that cannot be taken away from you is your choice over your attitude. A lot of the time, we feel hopeless and like we have no control over our situations. I know I've been feeling like that these past few weeks. But what we do have control over is how we react to the situations we are thrust in and our attitude. We have control over how happy we are.

Frankl makes the point that the way we react to our trials in life shows whether we are worthy of our sufferings. You are worthy if you bear the trials and come out a better person. I like this idea, it reminds me a bit of the Christian idea that this life is a test and God will never give you more than you can handle.

How we deal with the stresses and trials of life is our choice that no one can take away. It is the one thing that will always be our choice, no one else can make that choice for us. This is why it is the one thing that truly shows who we are. It shows what kind of a person you are. It shows what kind of morals and values you have.

I know I don't have nearly as much to deal with as Frankl did, and reading his story made me appreciate what I have. It also made me a bit ashamed of my feelings and attitudes that I have had lately. Life has been rough especially these last two weeks, and I have not handled it well. Reading Frankl's essay has inspired me to be worthy of my sufferings.

A Simple Path and An Open Heart- The Dalai Lama

I was surprised how much I enjoyed this. I liked the fact that he said that all the major world religions have the potential to serve humanity and develop good human beings. That quote says right away that he is not trying to push religion onto anybody. People who are normally religious tends to do that. The other part I enjoyed was when he said "Human nature is such that sometimes, in order to justify our adoption of a new religion, we may criticize our previous religion and claim it is inadequate. I can personally relate to that. I grew up Christian and now I am looking into every religion but. All in all I really loved this story. It told the truth, without pushing anyone. For someone to accomplish that I have to say great job. Not a lot of people can inform without pushing.

Do not set yourself up to fail. Just go with the flow of life and your dreams are more likely to come true. I like the fact he states that we need not to put all our focus on one goal because one never knows what life will bring.
The Holocaust was a very tragic event in our history. Even though it is an upsetting event, I do like hearing the stories about the turmoil and pain victims went through. This story is an interesting story to read. Learning about the numbness of the "prisoners" that grew into a new form of hope and life is awesome. The funny thing is, I just finished a fictional book that pertains to the same idea of breaking down a person's spirit, only to have that same person lift their spirit back up. It all comes down to one's self in the end, i guess. If one allows themselves to lose hope, then their hope will forever be lost. Tis a good lesson for everyone, no matter how much others try to take you down, we are all strong enough to keep ourselves up. Thanks for the uplifting readings, Professor Hsiao. :)

Satyagraha by Gandhi
Gandhi wrotr this piece to explain the idea of non-violent protest, due to the oppression the British had over India for several years. His concept of passive protest was rather strong instead of weak. Through violence, the cycle of blood spilling will constantly continue. Gandhi understood this, and that is why he promoted non-violent protest. Only peace could be achieved if both sides were satisfied. Satyagraha is not an easy thing to comply with. Gandhi explains that is very difficult, and without the determination and suffering, the idea is useless. To achieve it, one must have the courage and discipline necessary. I can only imagine the suffering and pain the Indians have endured. Watching loved ones fall helplessly beside you would put a man in a sort of animalistic state, like the effect of war on a young mind. Instead, Gandhi and his fellow believers stood their ground and took their tragedies and did nothing about it. At the time, most British soldiers saw them as weak, simply because they were dying. They were terribly wrong. The Indians always had the option of fighting back, but instead they were smart enough to see the big picture and hold out until the dream was finally achieved. Also having your friends and family die beside you in protest forcefully places you in desperation and the "nothing to lose" category. This is where men are when they are most dangerous. To hold back and control something so emotionally powerful, you must truly be strong both inside and out. It is astounding to see how men and women have such courage and discipline to stand up against to such tyrants.

I liked the book Men Search for Meaning by Viktor E. Frankl for that reason i am going to talk about Mr. Frankl...

To me, he can be an inspiration to anyone when it comes to the meaning of "no retur"... There was a posibility that he was not going to make it out of the camps, but as education came into, he made it out... He is a hero to me and it should be to everyone else too... The men came out of the camp alone, un-healthy, sad, and with nothing in his hands and he wrote about his "time" in the camps... It is a very sad sad book but with a great value to get after, "to hark back to its title, it is hoped that 'optimism' for our future may flow from the lesson learned from our "tragic' past"... Only those that have a strong mentality and a positive attitude, anything good can come from anything worse...

Man's Search for Meaning

In the title "Man's search for Meaning" everyone looks for meaning in life. It could be from what someone wants to be in life or maybe the purpose for living in this harsh, cold world we live in. In the start of the story Frankl talks about happiness and success. According to Viktor he states "Happiness must happen by not caring about it." (1) How does success just happen? In our world in takes dedication, hardships and through hard work to reach success. Maybe I am misunderstanding what he is trying to say but from what I understand he states, it just happens! Certain things do not just happen. For example this first essay Mr.H assigned us, could not just taken lightly for it can affect out ending grades. Frankl said success just comes to you? Well not in this life time. I needed to struggle and push myself to the best of my ability and english being one of my weakness's, I could not wait for sucess just to happen! Success is earned and learned. The only thing I agree in his statement is the part about happiness. Happiness to a certain extend can and could just happen, but sometimes it must be found!

Now getting to the story, it was very heartbreaking to read about the harsh conditions he went through. Reading the story is makes me think about how can man treat people in this manner for they were people like everybody else. According to Frankl "He may retain his dignity even in a concentration camp." I respect this statement for a think its true. Frankl went through horrible conditions which many men fall and they took everything from him but his human dignity. Even in a concentration camp! They can talk everything but this! Also his emotions from past helped him push through against all the odds which many others would just give up. To this day I am still disgusted for what Hilter and his followers did to the Jews which I hope every last one of them burns in hell for it!

Man’s Search for Meaning

I totally agree with Viktor E. Frankl quote about success and happiness, “Don’t aim at success- the more you aim at it and make it a target, the more you are going to miss it. For success, like happiness, cannot be pursued; it must ensue…” This is true because the more you think of getting something the more you stress it and act the wrong way. Because by thinking about something specific you want in your life, you might end harming your self or other. I also believe that happiness has to flow into your life and you don’t have to sacrifice your self to obtain it. And that in order to accomplish anything in life you attitude counts a lot, because it is the type of attitude we have that makes us “succeed”. With succeed I mean that your attitude is the only thing that will make you accomplish you desired goal.

It is really amazing that after the horrible experience Frankl was through, he still managed to keep an optimistic attitude about the situation. As he explains in this next quote, “Everything can be taken away from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms- to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way.” Even in the most atrocious situation like his, you attitude is your only weapon to survive. Everything was taken from him like; rights as a human being, their sexual desired, their freedom, but not their DIGNITY. This is a really profound reading because it showed the great mental and spiritual power he had. Frankl did this by keeping a positive attitude through the unpleasant situation he was forced to experience.

A note for those who suffered in American Samoa
My Heart goes out to the families of the victims. For those who did not loose loved ones the total devastation of the landscape must be painful to bare. I cannot imagine loosing an automobile and having to buy a new one. Then I look at the news and see that stores, houses, schools and buildings are all destroyed. People who still have to make mortgage payments on a vacant lot where their childhood house used to be are still in disbelief. It was Katrina in 2005 when I gave my cousin up for dead. He later re surfaced in 2009. I wonder if the US government has any funds they can give for the victims. I will lift them in my prayers and hope that help finds them at this time of need.

Satyagraha by MK Gahdhi
It means holding on to truth. It is Civil disobedience, the weapon of the weak and it cannot exist without a just cause. Although it sounds submissive, it does not require one’s cooperation. Victory is impossible unless you remain calm. This is how Gandhi fought the British. The Jalianwala people had to undergo nonviolent training and discipline. This was the discipline of their conscious. Everyone involved had to self examine and constantly correct themselves in order to practice Satyagraha. This was important to have calmness under fire. Henery Thoreau practiced civil disobedience by not paying his taxes in protest of slavery.

Satyagraha: Civil Disobedience, Passive Resistence, Non-Co-Operation

I'm actually getting a head start this time instead of waiting until the morning of! =)

I have great respect for people who can give everything they have to a worthy cause. Gandhi really does give everything to his cause, right down to being willing to give up his life without a fight. I think that right there is amazing. To be able to face death and not flinch, knowing that you are dying for the greater good. It's not something that I could do. It's not something I would want to do. I think I would be too scared to calmly face death even if it was something I wanted to do. I don't think I could overcome the human instinct to fight for survival.

Gandhi's message is a simple one, and yet it is so very difficult. All he is asking for is complete nonviolent civil disobedience. The idea itself is easy enough to grasp. The practice of it is near impossible in my opinion. Gandhi writes that "satyagraha excludes the use of violence in any shape or form, whether in thought, speech or deed". Nonviolence must be practiced in every aspect, even down to thoughts. I understand that: to think something, to want something, is the first step in doing it. Violence must be avoided so throughly that even that first step is not taken. Like I said, very difficult to practice.

It is so important to be completely nonviolent because that is the only reason that this approach works. When you think about it, it makes perfect sense. Gandhi explains that "the might of the tyrant recoils upon himself when it meets with no response". I explain this to my best friend all the time. She has a nephew who is very annoying. I'm talking completely and purposefully pushing all the right buttons. And my friend always reacts with anger, which amuses him. I've tried explaining to her that all he wants is a reaction and that if she would stop giving it to him he would get bored and stop. She's tried my approach a few times and had great success, but unfortunately most of the time her temper gets the better of her. It is this same concept that Gandhi is describing. By failing to submit and give in to the temptation to react violently, which is what the British want, they ultimately take the power away from the British and make them look ridiculous for using so much force on people who aren't fighting back.

Mahatma Ghandi

Ghandi, a few ways, was very similar to Dr. King. He was involved in a revolution of sorts just as MLK called for a peaceful revolt against white oppression. Ghandi has a wonderful worker of words concerning his message of peaceful, yet powerful provocation. He called for all of India to band together against a British tyranny that held them down for far too long. Ghandi, albeit a strange hot dog in his personal life, was a leader that was unique among leaders. He actually did not consider himself one for many many years. The words written here are attractively human, and sincerely forceful. I love the way he calls for willing sacrifice of self. Reading the words of such a pained aspiration is an undertaking in and of itself. The comprehension required to match an understanding of discipline similar to Ghandi is exhausting. I cannot fathom such a peaceful outlook on such a dire circumstance. If I were in the positions of Ghandi and/or Dr. King, I would have to say I definitely wouldn’t have such a positive disposition.

A Simple Path and an Open Heart

Prior to reading “A Simple Path and an Open Heart,” I had almost no knowledge about the Buddhist religion. To be quite frank, in reading it, I thought it to be very selfish in nature. Through the vast idioms of "political correctness," was an undertone of pure selfish desire. To amply support my claim, I have detailed the following examples:

1. "Caring for our neighbors' interests is essentially caring for our own future. Today the reality is simple. In harming our enemy, we are harmed" (13).

2. "However, throughout all these years, I learned about compassion, about caring for others. This mental attitude has brought me inner strength" (4).

3. "We thereby recognize that our own future happiness and welfare is dependent on the many other members of our society" (3).

Within these quotes is a common theme of "charity;" however, it is in the motive behind such deeds that I find to be selfish. Each act of “charity” is quickly preceded by a self-serving intention behind it. From a Christian perspective, the out-and-out focus on the self predominately stuck out to me, for in the Christian faith, all acts of charity are to be done for God, and not for the welfare of our own personal happiness. As I continued to read this piece by The Dalai Lama, one particular verse from the Bible came to mind. “Whatever you did for the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me” (Matthew 25:45). I believe this verse adequately displays the aim of the Christian faith, as opposed to the intention of the Buddhist religion. Interesting stuff!

Man's Search for Meaning

While reading A Man's Search for Meaning I realized how many people take this beautiful life for granted. Life is so precious and priceless. First off, I could not even begin to imagine all the horrible things that this man went through in the concentration camps. How vividly he spoke about every encounter and about every memory. How does someone NOT give up hope? This story was even better than watching a movie about the Holocaust. These men stuck together despite of the circumstances. Those are real men. The guards took away their appearance, their families, their freedom, but they never took away the men they were inside. Everyone who survived the Holocaust and even those who did not have such a big hearts. The aww factor was that the love for his wife kept him going everyday.

Man’s Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankl

I think the whole purpose of this reading is for Viktor Frankl to teach everyone that they are all entitled to find their meaning to life. He believes that everyone has their own way of finding that meaning. He mentions his experience in a concentration camp and he is able to do it so descriptively. Reading about the holocaust always gets me feeling gloomy, but it is so captivating at the same time. It is just so amazing to read about all the bad things that went on, and have a survivor talk about how they managed to survive. Frankl survived off of the thoughts of his wife, teaching, and being at home. Not many people are mentally strong enough to be able to imagine such things. Many people just died from lack of faith and hunger. One must go through life’s obstacles in order to find a way to their meaning in life. He went through a great deal with watching others around him pass away and being treated like an animal. It has made him the person he is today. We must ensue and not pursue our success.

Satyagraha By Gandhi

Reading Gandhi work was a little confusing to me. I was wondering if someone preached non violence why they are talking about people to getting shot. Then we talked about it in class and I understood what he was saying. In one of the paragraph he talks bout how people going to die, it is better to stand there facing their attacker then to coward and give them the satisfaction of letting them to see you scared.

Let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Gandhi talks about Truth. Gandhi states “Satyagraha is literally holding on to Truth…Truth-force.” He says that human are not capable of truth then why are capable to punish. People are quick to punish. People feel when they are wrong they want to retaliate at the person who wronged them. Like when we get cut off while driving. When I get cut off I will say under my breath “I hope you stub your toe.” I do not care how bad someone has wronged me I will never wish someone to get hurt. A stubbed toe is just a quick pain that I feel is karma coming back to bite them in the butt.

Gandhi is someone that practice peace and non violence. He rather uses words then guns. Sometimes words and non violence can be more powerful then guns. People have a tenancy to listen more with out a gun to their heads.

Man's Search for Meaning by Viktor E. Frankl

First off, I found it so interesting about the relationship of inner strength and outer strength. While a man may be muscular and strong looking, if they had a week spiritual and intellectual life, it became harder to survive. The holocaust was a disgusting act of human violence that is to be looked down upon for the rest of human life. What I enjoy, if that is an appropriate word, about it, is the stories like Frankl's that come from it. They are sad, but extremely inspirational. I thought it was very interesting how Frankl looked at the attitudes of the men and related them to survival. He states, "any man can, even under such circumstances, decide what shall become of him-mentally and spiritually."(14) Attitudes are a very important part of life in every aspect including school and relationships. I agree that we decide our fate by deciding our attitude toward what is going on in life. There are always those people who come to you saying how there life is horrible and you wonder what would they do in your shoes or someone worse off. Personally, when things in my life are going wrong I like to think on those who have it much worse off. I need to remember that I have my freedom, my family, my friends, my country, my house, my car, my clothes, my luxuries and most importantly my life. Embrace life because you never know when it will end, make the most out of every day and live for those who cannot.

Mans search for meaning by Viktor E. Frankl

This reading was very detailed. Frankl is talking about his time in the concentration camps. Life was a living hell. I could not imagine my self having to live what he lived trough. Imagine being with people and just by looking at them having an idea when their time might come. How hard it must be to look at your self and think that your time is coming soon. My favorite part of this reading is his optimist outlook on life. He says "everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of human freedoms-to choose ones attitude in any given circumstances, to chose ones way". This particular quote stands out to me because i know people that have great losses in their lives and totally flipped and on the other hand i know people that have also had great losses and overcame them. At the end of the day it is ultimately up to you to chose your way.

Man's Search for Meaning by Viktor E. Frankl

This reading reminded me of a book I read in my 10 grade english class callded Night. I don't recall the last name of the author but he was a Holocust survior as well. What i got out of this reading is how man when put in harship, unhuman, painful, gloomy, and horrible situation some look for reasons to survive or ask question why is this happening to me. I agree what he is saying through his writing about how humans can be taken away from all of the material stuff, be broken in spirit, and emotionaly. However, is ones decision on how one take on those stuff and what one make out of them to survive. This links to Dalia Lama to me when he says that one should not hold on to the material stuff and is true cuz when thats taken why you are left with the reality of things and one can be truly happy. Is obvious that he was not happy for he was prisoner, but because he saw it within himself to hold on to what was really important. He was even away to see to the beauty in his tormant. Is like a song i like from Frou Frou " Let Go ( Beauty in the Breakdown).

Satyagraha - Gandhi

The main point of Gandhi in Satyagraha is to convey that violence solves nothing. The ways of non violence are much more powerful than the use of violence. Satyagraha is powerful because it "excludes the use of violence in any shape or form, whether in thought, speech, or deed." Man are not able to punish because they cannot understand the absolute truth.

A Simple Path and An Open Heart by The Dalai Lama

In A Simple Path, he has a good point that, "Human nature is such that sometimes, in order to justify our adoption of a new religion, we may criticize our previous religion and claim it is inadequate." This is exactly what happened to me! Ever since I became a Christian, when I read or hear things from other religions, I would assume that it must have something wrong. It just naturally came out of my thought, but this should not happen. Just like Dalai Lama says, all religions have potential to develop a good heart. Instead of comparing and criticizing other religions, Dalai Lama emphasized the similarities between them. In paragraph 7, he says, “The point is that through these different traditions, a very negative person can be transformed into a good person.” It is true that most religions encourage people to do good things and be a good person, and it is one of the reason we should respect other religions. However, I disagree with him when he says that is the purpose of religion. If the purpose of religion is just to change negative people into good people, then we can say every religion is suitable for everyone for that the ultimate goal is the same. But this is not the real case. Obviously, people choose different religions for more reasons, and that is why one particular religion might work for some people but fail on others.

In An Open Heart, he says he believes that everyone has a desire to pursue happiness, and I believe that too. The key to happiness is a positive mental attitude. It is not by something external to make us happy; it is actually because we have our inner peace and positive mindset that make us happy regardless of all the surroundings. He also uses secular ethics to promote love, compassion, and forgiveness rather than talking about religious views. I love his peaceful idea that he keeps saying we are the same. We should not build so many boundaries and create so many differences; we are all interdependent in this small world. We should not only think about ourselves but think about the interest of others.

It is funny that when I read through this, I found myself trying to find anything that against my Christian belief and had the intention to criticize Dalai Lama’s point of view. But after all, I do agree with him on many points in his message, and I respect his open-minded approach to different religions.

When Prof. Hsiao wrote "Frankl" on the board, I could have sworn I read Frank I as in Frank the First. I thought we were going to be reading an excerpt from a king from back in the days of yore. Maybe I should change my contact lenses.

Man's Search for Meaning - Viktor Frankl

This is a beautiful piece of literature. Inspiring in strange ways.

Frankl starts off by letting telling us this, "Don't aim at success..." Completely different that what we usually hear, "Shoot for the stars!", "You can do anything if you put your mind to it!" Frankl complete puts a twist on these cliches. He lets us know that, as far as success goes, "you have to let it happen by not caring about it." Who says that? He does have a point though. If you try your hardest to be successful, you are only setting yourself up for a huge disappointment. You have to let success, like love and happiness, just come to you. Let it happen on it's own.

Frankl goes on to tell one of the most vivid stories I I have read about the Holocaust. The way Frankl describes what he went through is troubling and heart wrenching. It was a great read after visiting the Museum of Tolerance. Of course, Frankl goes and twists what could have been another bleak, sad, melancholy Holocaust story, and twists and flips it into a beacon of hope. He lets us know that in the darkest of times, hope can and usually prevails. That the most random memories can keep you alive when you are facing death. He teaches us about a different type of freedom during oppression, an inner freedom. The Nazi's may have taken away every outer freedom he had, but deep inside his heart and mind lied a true freedom that no matter what, could not be taken away.

Man's Search for Meaning

To have happiness, one shouldn't look for it. one should just live his or her life and it will come to them. In this story, It shares a lot of views that the Dalai Lama spoke of. one of these ideas are of finding inter peace in the midst of horror and pain. He also speaks of looking at all men as equal as does the man in M.S.F.M.

Hello everyone. I was currently writing a research paper for my psych 103 class and I got writer's block so I decided to come here and blog a little & finish my other homework at the same time. Now, I thought my attention squandered a little bit when I read Ghandi's work, so I will not write about that. The Dalai Lama's work was so good. It was just so simple and well put. I felt that it had all the goodness and passion to offer, sort of like MLK's work, but definitely a more passive tone. I still almost got the same feeling from it because I felt they were pushing for the same thing: equality, however, Lama is pushing for equality on a different level, a more spiritual level. I love the prayer that he mentioned and I definitely feel that although we are very different, I share the same view in my Catholic faith. The three most important commandments of being Catholic are to love your God more than anything and love your neighbor as yourself. Now if I love myself and if I love that I am Catholic, then I should be able to love my neighbor whether they are atheist, Buddhist, or Muslim. Sometimes it is hard to see eye to eye, but we are definitely all equal in the structures of our bodies. I do have to say that I thought it was really cool that he won some sort of award the other day. I was eating breakfast while getting ready for class and he totally came on the news! It's nice to see that this has been presented to so many and not to just ourselves as a class level. Sometimes being stuck in a classroom and with our busy schedules we tend to forget what goes on outside in the world. Good way to put it into perspective.

Satyagraha: Civil Disobedience

Im sure I totaly understood what was being said in the story Satyagraha, but I think that It's saying that one should practice self disciplin always. We should always refrain from violence of any sort. We should'nt curse on the freeways during rush hour. Rush our, who invented that term anyway? It should be rush day, because I don't care what time of day I get on the dam freeway in route for my destination I encounter some sort of traffic. I don't mind some traffic, as long as it is moving, and not at a crawl. No cursing on the telephone when we call an 800 number or any other number for that matter and we get a recording prompting us do this and do that. It's next to impossiable to get a live person on the phone when we need one. So in other words go with the flow, and except it.

Man's Search for Meaning by Viktor E. Frankl

So good sir Frankl kindly points out to us, the reader, that happiness is not something we should directly aim for. Instead, we should simply listen to our conscience and wing it. This, according to his hypothesis, is a way to happiness.

What Frankl says goes along with the people who say, "Oh, just do what you love and love what you do. You'll be happy." There is certainly a measure of truth in that kind of statement. By no longer dwelling on the issue of being happy or fulfilled, one can grasp what they seek. Somewhat like trying to catch a fly in ones hand: the more one focuses on the fly itself, the less likely one is to capture it.

So like, use the force mastah grasshoppa, and like don't "aim at success" and like junk, like like.

Satyagraha: Civil Disobedience...
Mohandas K. Gandhi

This is a pretty interesting excerpt as it talks about different needs that need to be met for successful Civil disobedience. The name itself is self-explanatory: "Refusal to obey civil laws in an effort to induce change in governmental policy or legislation, characterized by the use of passive resistance or other nonviolent means" (websters). It is very difficult to disobey in an orderly manner, as one may be threatened with their lives if one does not comply. This holds true with the events taking place in India, which I'm assuming Gandhi is speaking of the Amritsar Massacre. From what I know, this was a very tragic massacre involving soldiers murdering several people who were unarmed, and practicing a form of passive resistance.

Gandhi goes on to talk about how courage and discipline is needed to execute a successful act of passive resistance. the enemy wants people to be horrified and running for their lives, as they feed off it. Once people stop running and are not subdued into "crawling on their bellies", then a successful resistance is completed.

Gandhi also emphasizes that one must not feed into their anger and rage, as their emotions will be tested greatly. If one is to succumb to the "greatest provocation", then one will have accomplished the enemy's goal. The sole purpose of the enemy is to break people and disburse the crowd, as it is easier to pick off people one by one than as a large group. Very strong read on civil disobedience with history to back it up.

Is a story which he suffurs thru the clutches of death and survives the nazu rule. he is one of many who survive the nazi empire and almost saw the worl come to an end. he kept his sanity by visualizing his wife and family as well as some conversation. he only thougth about the godd things as well as some happy places. hu used a method called reframe were he sees a past event and expirence the same thing he did during his time. he also speaks in some what of this era and i tend to do on what je says in the text. if you think about aiming for something, it tends to misleade you. if you do not aim for it, you find it closer to it than most people ever do. when i was little i would tend to buy those yugioh packages and i would try to get the card i want but i never got it. then on day i got tired of it that i was not thinking about the card. i already knew the outcome so it did not bother me if i got it or not. in that same package i got the card i was trying to get. so in a sense but not thinking about it i got it. the same is being told in mans search for meaning, during his endurence and life from the nazis he refreame his thiougth in the place were he was and looked at tha happy moments. we migth feel pain and agony but the mind is the only tool were no one can take away exept for ourselfs.

Reading A Simple Path and An Open Hearth, by The Dalai Lama was very interesting to me. I always knew the concept of what Buddhist simply was only and wanted to look a little further into it. I like how it is straight forward and goes straight to the point. Also, it does not criticize nor say that buddhism is superior than the other religions. On the contrary, all religions are placed equally and states that they should also respect one's believes. I think that is very true. I have had people come to door from a different religion and try to persuade me into changing mine to theirs instead of respecting it. It gets frustrating sometimes because they would just keep on insisting and would not give up. The author points out how Buddism is the best religion there is for them, however not for everyone. Therefore, every individual is giving right the to find and belief a religion that is suitable for themselves. Also, I agree how religion makes influences us for the better and does make a change in each person.

His Holiness, The Dali Lama

Finally a story in which i can relate to. As i began to read this story i could not put it down. I was attracted to it from the start, and that is not an easy task for a book or story to do. I love how the Dali Lama talks about happiness in this story. He has a very philisophical way of talking and he does it with such wisdom that one cannot help but be drawn in to what he is saying. He first begins by talkng about the Four Noble Truths and how one must understand them in order to practice Buddah Dharma. He also talk about how not one religion is the best for anyone, but if one were to ask him personally, then he would say Buddhisim of course. He argues his side describing what Buddhisim is and what it teaches. He says that it is every human being's desire to find happiness and does not want to suffer. He believes that every person has the potential to experience this happiness and develop inner peace. He says that we need to steer away from material desires because they keep us from focusing on our inner values. we neglect what is truley imortant to our happiness. And I completely agree with what he is saying. He emphasizes that we are the same, that we all as humans have the same potential to achieve happiness and inner peace. it is the way we think that determines if we will ever reach that level of happiness. He also emphasizes that we all depend on each other as humans to fulfill our happiness. If we neglect the interests of others and harm them, than we will ultimatly suffer ourselves. So it is up to each indivudual to find their own happiness and to be a kind and warm-hearted person

Man's Search for Meaning

While i was reading this story one line stood out to me. Frankl says," ... they offer sufficient proof everything can be taken from a man but one thing; the last of the human freedoms- to choose one's attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one's own way"(12). I agree with this statement because attitude is a major factor in how one may get through or perceive a situation. Frankl kept a positive attitude throughout his time in the concentration which gave him motivation and stamina go get out. He kept his mind on the positives in his life, like his wife, which pushed him to keep going. I feel most people in this situation, being in a concentration camp, may give up right from the beginning and have a horrible attitude making everything much worse. Overall, i feel people have a lot of power when it comes to the way they deal with a situation.

Man's search for Meaning

After all that the author has been through, he still sticks with the optimistic approach. It is difficult to stay postive, especially in the worst circumstances, but keeping self calmness helps. In the begining he mentioned a book he wrote, which he aimed for success, but it did not happen. "For success, like happiness, cannot be pursued; it must ensue, and it only does so as the unintended side-effect of one's personal dedication to cause greater than oneself or as the by-product of one's surrender to a person other than oneself". Meaning, we cannot chase after success, we must be happy for what we do, then for that, success will follow, when we stop aiming. We learn from past experiences, that tell us to do or not to do the ideas that are intended, to learn from them. Everyones learns from past experiences, either when we were a child or now. For instance, when i was in Color Guard in high school i would not eat throughout the day, one day we had a hard practice that made me sick, next day i kept throwing up the whole day. I learned that i need to eat something before i practice, cause if not, i would get sick.

In the end, the author speaks about the harder times in the camp, that he would no give up. He says that once you think about suffering, then that's all we think about, which will eventually be lead up too it. It's true, once something bad happens, it's all we think about.

Having a positive approach will mentally and spiritual help through the struggles in one's life.

Man's Search for Meaning
by Viktor E. Frankl

The Dalai Lama strongly empasizes on the importance of emotional and mental strength. Frankl's personal story is an example of what this inner strength can do for one's self. The whole concept of Frankl's, Man's Search for Meaning is practicing mind over matter and finding purpose/meaning in one's life. He himself suffered such tragedy while struggling in the concentration camps. With such harsh conditions, how could one survive? The use of his imagination and memories were his survival technique. He might have been physically prisoned, but mentally he was free to roam. Frankl envisioned his wife and conversed with her. He also pictured himself in a classroom giving a lecture on the psychology of the concetration camp. By doing so, he was able to "rise above the situation". Viktor Frankl is proof that anyone can make it out alive through all of life's tragedies. As long as one is determined and optimistic, anything is possible.

Dalai Lama:

I go to a christian church and at church they preach about how our religion is the right way and we should reach out to those that don't follow our religion to help them, to save them...that that is part of the duty of being a christian.

i never really agreed with this concept. Who am i to tell someone that their religion is wrong, in their eyes i am the one who is wrong and they are right. I love Dalai Lamas words on this topic, that all religions are good and have potential. That the purpose of religion is to change people into compassianate people.

I also love his views on love and how we are all the same and we should all love eachother becasue we are all connected in some way. To harm our nieghbors brings us harm.
I don't know much about Buddihism so it was interesting to see their views and a little of their beliefs such as peace, friendship, and non violence and even though i am Christian i agree with these Buddhist beliefs. I mean who doesn't agree people and the world need more love, peace, friendship and non violence.

Mans search for Meaning
by Viktor E. Frankl

To go through hell and back would be an under statement when taking into consideration what viktor went through. ironically taking all of this into account seems not to be enough to suprise me when i find out how he feels about everything. Viktor for some reason seems to have gone back to not only a normal life but a great one. After going what he went through just to live an awsome life is an insperating thing in itself. If one was to be put into a consistant life and death situation over and over just for it to get worse everyday one has to ask ones self how would one survive? to be put through rediculous manual labor, to be told made to feel as though that you are even lower than dirt, to see death as a mere joke, and to know that all of this is just a speed bump in ones life is just insane to imagine. yet out of all the things that viktor endured he has still found the will to move on and make sothing of himself.

Man's Search for Meaning

Frankl has a way of describing his realization for a higher purpose in life without talking only about his experiece in the concentration camps. This is because what happened to him mentally is what kept him alive through the physical agony he underwent. He says if we dedicate ourselves to life, and do our best and follow our concience, success and happiness are side-effects of this. One must aim to do good outside of oneself in order for happiness and success to happen. In paragraph 3 he describes how things that would bother most people are just aspects of life and not seen as bumps on the road, this is so because of one's higher life in purpose and ability to rise from these little situations. What gave him this strenght to overlook these hurdles in life was his love for his wife, and the thoughts of little things that made up his past (such as entering his apartment, turning on lights, etc). One usually bypasses all these little aspects of our life, but what would we do, how would we react if they were suddenly taken away? His appreciation of things one usually bypasses grew. For example, when he and 2,000 other prisoners are transfered by train, the scenery he sees is an experience that cannot be taken away from him, no matter who much he physically suffers. In paragraphs 12-14, Frankl explains how any outer influence does NOT ultimately determine the choices we make, these choices are freedoms that cannot be taken away from us under any circumstance, we have the choice to determine the type of person we are by the mental choices we make for ourselves. He says, "It is this spiritual freedom- which cannot be taken away- that makes life meaningful and purposeful" (15). The lessson for us in his essay is that no matter what life has dealt us, these situations do not make us who we are inside, no matter how bad things get, how much we may suffer, we still have the inner freedom to chose the person we want to be.

after going over the reading of the dahli lama i have realized that religiong is just more that a faith someone belives in. to me religion shows who people are and how they can be. to some people religion is everything, to others they only belive in it when they need it. the dahli lama expalins that all religions can come together and proceed as one. the can come together and become stronger as one.

Reflection on Man's Search for Meaning

This would be my second time doing this reading. Honestly it is just as sad as when I read it the first time.I have read and understand all that was going on during the time of the Holocaust, and I feel he is one of the strongest. I believe Viktor Frankl's strength came from within. What else are you really left with when something so powerful such as the Holocaust strips you from your freedom? One thing that could not be taken was his inner thoughts. Though I probably would not have been strong enough to overcome such a tragedy, Viktor Frankl I believe knew he would come out alive. His success developed when he made the decision not to have his inner self torn away like all the others. He aimed at what he believed to be an accomplishment even if it was just a simple daily thought throughout the day. I believe he had a better understanding of what was actually going on around him at the time, and being more aware is keeping yourself ahead of any situation. I became sad when I started reading paragraph 9. This paragraph he was stating how at one point in time he did not even know if his wife were alive, and that there was not a need for him to know. He did not need to know, because the memories he had for her were so unconditional her love could not escape from him. She may have not been physically there, but the love he kept inside of him for her was just the same. Now that is true love.
It is also so hard to come back to reality and realize that this is only one of many people. It is depressing to think about all the others that have experienced the exact emotions of Viktor Frankl, especially all the families that had been sepereated.

Man's Search for Meaning
By: Viktor E. Frankl

Frankl writes about the hell he went through while being a prisoner in the concentration camps. Although he described how miserable and horrible it was during that time for him, buy yet he still kept fighting for the meaning of happiness. Basically he wants us to learn is that we need to appreciate happiness and the life we are living because we might not know when it’s going to go away. Like Frankl said many people in the concentration camps were accustomed to the accommodated life that once were now the ones suffering the most. We need to learn to appreciate everything we have now because we never know when it might be taken away from us. Sometimes a person is willing to give everything they have but are never willing to give their dignity from them. The prisoners were not only taken everything they had but as well as their dignity, respect, and spirituality. Happiness and love is what prevents a person from falling. If a person thinks he can no longer keep living and thinks he or she is going to fail in life they are not going to fail. This is due because the because of the love they have for someone or something that keeps them going to accomplish everything. Love and happiness is what makes a person strong, not matter the life they are living, if they have love they are able to accomplish almost everything.

Dalai Lama
ok so i read the a simple path an open heart. i liked it alot only because i have the same mentality besides minus the whole people think im a great person. i like the fact that he encourages all religions and has respect for every single one. Good people don't always have to be ones of faith but in the dalai lama's eyes it's better i mean who in this world doesn't want peace i'm sure we would all want it but it gets bamboozling when theres people who want it and yet not everyone practices it. but yeah i honestly like this piece pf literature alot.
"may the poor find wealth, those weak with sorrow find joy." it kind of reminds me of how my mom when she says "By the grace of GOD go I".

Man's search for meaning.i don't care how masciline you think you are but wow if this story doesn't bring tears to anyone's eyes i have no idea what will. honestly i'm not one for love and mushieness but come on for Frankl to thrive to live just to see his wife's face that has to be the greatest love on this earth, to read, hear about, and for him it was 100x better because he expierenced it and yeah with love comes heart break but OHEMMGEE i do not think i would have had that much will power. ugh it gets me teary eyed just to think about it.

Gandhi

As i was reading this story i placed myself una soldiers shoes. they are trained to fallow orders anf are expected to do as they are told. With Gandhi he gave great importance to being calm you have to teach yearself how to react in certain cituations. i agree that non violence is never the answer to anything it just looks down upon us. i think that temper can be calmed if we just take time and thik before we act. many times people take action before thinking thing through and that is wat causes more problems. if everyone just took time to think things through we would handle things very differently.

Man's Search for Meaning

"Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms-to choose one's attitude in any set of circumstances, to choose one's own way"

I have a friend who has had a pretty nice life. She always had a nice house, toys, great friends, funny brothers and awesome parents, yet she still thought her life was miserable. She always complained because her brothers teased her, her parents were too protective, and she didn't have what others had. It was a constant pity party. I always tried to show her the positive things about her life, or different ways to look at things when they couldn't be fixed. She insisted on wallowing in her self-made misery. I would always tell her, "If you look at things differently, then they'll be different. Change the way you think." Frankl puts what I've always wanted to tell her into words. He went through one of the worst situations that a human can go through, yet still maintained his sanity and dreams intact. Our attitude can make or break certain situations. We can look at life as an adventurous learning experience, and have fun with it, or as one tragedy after another. Its all our choice.

Man's Search for Meaning by Viktor E. Frankl

In many different ways I have heard something similar to what the opening message has for the reader. Success will come but in order for it to come one must forget to think about it. It will follow as a result of the commitment that one has for the thing they love to do. It will be like happiness all around. How can one not be happy when surrounded by the happiness due to the love they have for it.

Viktor Frankl being a psychologist made it apparent for me to see why he thought the way he thought. It seems like his strong mental state was due to what he saw and went through at the camp. He would think of ways to stay strong in his head as he saw others fall. He had memories and the love he had for his wife, even if dead, to keep him company when alone. One advantage I saw was that he had a clear undertanding of his surroundings. Even though of all the suffering around him, he chose his own path and decided he would not have his inner freedom stripped down from him. That is something that others at the camp did not understand.

Gandhi

As I was reading this it made me happy to hear someone talking about peace. And not in that like hiipie type way (nothing against hippies) but he spoke it very well and wanted us to not resort to violence. His way of living was one of non-violence and i totally loved that about this story. He encouraged everyone to not be so violent. Seeing as how the world is today and how people are so violent is sad. If you think about it for the most part violence has never solved anything. When you fight with someone the words that you tell them are the ones that hurt the most. You could physically hurt that other person but the words that you say hurt the most, so what was the point of violence? It is good that he tells people not to be violent, and it does not matter what kind of person you are, what you believe in or what your gender, we just need to be civil and resolve things like humans and not be violent.

Ok, I am a little behind now on my blogging, it's been a little crazy at home! Anyways, I am going to do my blog for earlier this week, and the one for today.
First, I want to talk about the 2 pieces from Dalai Lama, A Simple Path and An Open Heart. I really liked how he talked about respecting each others religions in A Simple Path. I liked that idea, because nobody has the authority to be able to say which religion is the best. I, personally, do not believe there is any one religion that is better than the other. Every religion has its good and bad points. I was raised in a very strict Catholic home. I do not now claim to be a full believer and follower of the Catholic faith. I do not know if it is right for me, but that is something I have to figure out for myself, no matter what anyone else, especially my family, may say about that. I am sure that if I were to become a member of any other religious community my family would probably not agree and would most likely try to talk me into rejoining the Catholic religion as they see it as the best choice. I also really liked his second piece, An Open Heart. I really liked how he talks about the problems that humanity currently faces and how everyone depends on one another, even without knowing. I would like to believe that his idea of living in a nonviolent way could one day become reality, but I do not see that happening. I appreciate The Dalai Lama's views on everything, and how he talks about everything without putting a specific religious view on what he is talking about. Everything is written in a way that anyone could feel comfortable agreeing with him. I really liked the prayer he ended his second piece with.
May the poor find wealth,
Those weak with sorrow find joy.
May the forlorn find new hope,
Constant happiness and prosperity.

May the frightened cease to be afraid,
And those bound be free.
May the weak find power,
And may their hearts join in friendship.
This little prayer, to me, inspires me to want to change things around me for the better.

Ok, now on to the current part of my homework. I have read Frankl's piece before, but I never tire of it. His piece is a truly inspiring piece. The first time I read his story about what life was like in the concentration camps I was just in shock. I could not understand how someone could go through such an awful, traumatic experience and still keep such a positive outlook, and keep that hope. Frankl's story just goes to show you that anyone can overcome anything in their lives as long as they keep a positive inner strength. I like how he mentions in the beginning of his story how success happened for him. I have heard that theory many different times in my life, and I always try to remember that when I'm working for "success" or recognition for good that I have done. I have had a rough path to go down since I graduated high school, and at times I get caught up in trying to prove my success. When I try to prove that I've done good, i usually end up with difficult times, so I have learned to let go. Success has to happen, just like happiness. It cannot be pursued or it will never be caught.

Dalai Lama -A Simple Path and an Open Heart

After reading this essay a few times, I figured the message he is trying to bring out is finding peace and good. Finding “good” for him is religion, no matter what religion it is any religion will bring you good. Also, he expresses him-self a lot when it comes to peace rather than violence. Since when someone does something in a violent way, there is always no solution, and only more problems come about. If people communicated more about their problems and take time to sit down and express each others dillema, there would be less violence and a better, calmer solution. This essay in a way reminds me of MLK’s “I Have a Dream” speech since the both want peace without violence.

In the second paragraph, he mentions how while working on a railway track in a snow storm, despite the weather he had to keep working. He paused to take a breath an at that point the guard happened to look and thought he was loafing as he says. He says that he wasn't even hurt at the fact that he received blows from him nor swearing. What hurt him was the fact that he threw a rock at him calling his attention. To him, that was a way to call the attention of a beast. It was as if he was throwing a rock at a dog trying to call his attention. In a way it is the same with men and women. When guys call girls in the street trying to get their attention they call them by whistling or "Chcht!" WTH is that? We are not dogs!

I agree with Frankl when he says that one thing that cannot be taken from us is your choice over your attitude. A lot of the time, we feel like we have no control over our situations. What we do have control over is how we react to any situation.

Satyagraha by Ghandi

First of all I have to say I admire Ghandi and reading this piece is an admiration from beginning to end. The Parragraph that struck me the most was the Non-retaliation on sentence one " Victory is impossible until we are able to keep our temper under the gravest provocation." He knew nothing would have gotten resolved through manifesting anger, to get a respolution and non violence one person must be peace. I think that should apply to the world with all these wars it will never come to an end for everyone to have civil disobedience. Ghandi made a difference as all it took was peace and cool courage.

i recall reading this story spring semester...even though we did a paper on it and write quotes down that related to our story i have not gotten tired of reading it. the beginning itself relays awesome advice on being successful in life. since i read "dont aim at success--the more you aim at it and make it a target, the more you are going to miss it..." last spring i have been following that advice and even used it on my little brother and older sister once or twice. i dig it. so, now i go by it. (dont quote me on that) ahaha but deeper in the story it gets incredibly descriptive of how they were not able to clean their teeth not shower nor change of clothing yet they had the best gums, lived through their human deterioating stench, and survived through the coldest of winters in thinning rags. it said to look at someone that past bys you and know that they are next to pass away. imagine the same constant unpleasant routnie over and over. insanity nor being fragile killed them but the hopes of the future and reuniting with loved ones kept them alive. frankl goes in depth on how the "sex drive" (as raul said deeply) was lost and how spiritual belief and looking forward to the future (i repeated myself) helped them get by slowly day by day. these two pages of the story describes an ample amount of events that frankl went through specifically and covers all...its just amazing how two pages can express an incredible amount of tragic and vividly paint the picture in your mind. the story overpowers the pages and leaves a message saved in your head.

Logotherapy

I couldn't possibly read Frankl's work too many times over. I do believe that if there were any text we might be able to read in it's enirety, it would be Man's Search For Meaning. Frankl discusses his experience in a concentration camp during the holocaust, via shorthand notes that he was able to smuggle throughout his stay in the various camps.

The entire passage provides evidence for the closing sentence: "Emotion, which is suffering, ceases to be suffering as soon as we form a clear and precise picture of it." (Spinoza)
He illustrates with vivid detail how the prisoners had a greater appreciation for things such as the arts when viewing the beautiful sunrisen landscapes. One might never imagine such a reference to the arts in such a terrible state of imprisonment and near death, but Frankl knows the power of the mind. Visions of things past, present and future kept him alive, pushing forward to realize his freedom. His wife had been killed, but her image is what kept him. This image was created by the mind and the mind alone, just as he created the future image of his lecture on what was his present experience.

Suffering is what you make of it.
It's all about your state of mind.

Although I believe the essays written by the Dalai Lama were my favorite of the three we read, I also really enjoyed A Man's Search for Meaning. The timeliness of reading that essay could not have been better, because I felt that it really ties into my Allegory of the Cave essay. In fact, I actually ended up quoting Viktor Frankl in my final draft!
The holocaust setting of the story was very intriguing. That's one of my favorite areas of history and it is always fascinating to hear different accounts of it.
I really admire Frankl and the way he was able to survive the horrible conditions. His account finally made me understand the phrase "Mind over matter." I particularly loved how he stated that no matter what else they took from him, his thoughts were his own. And those thoughts were powerful. They gave him something substantial to remember and look forward to. I think its very powering that the very thing that helped him survive is something that we all have within us. Outer strength matters not at all when in competition with the power of our thoughts.

Satyagraha: Civil Disobedience, Passive Resistance, Non-Co-operation by Mohandas K. Gandhi

This excerpt seems to lay out a lot of what I understood about Gandhi's teachings.

I love how he talks about non-violence and discipline. I've always thought it harder to keep your hands to yourself instead of retaliating when attacked, because it is our first instinct to fight back. It is always more difficult to fight nature.

With that being said, we do have the capability to fight nature that other animals do not. We have the capability to keep ourselves from retaliating, from destroying each other, so I think that we should use our our capabilities to our advantage, instead of ignoring that, and doing what pea-brained animals do in that situation.

Man's Search for Meaning

It is amazing to hear stories of survivors who went through great ordeals of suffering, yet their optimistic heart continues to persevere through dark times. The best parts of his excerpts highlight the “last inner freedom that cannot be lost” and the possibility for “spiritual life to deepen in spite of all the enforced physical and mental primitiveness of the life in a concentration camp.” What I find interesting is the fact that Frankl, whose life is plagued with horror events during his stay at concentration camps, continues to retain his own sense of inner freedom. Ironically, we as free people who are not chained down by another human being, are not as spiritually rich as those who have endured a lifetimes worth of harsh cruelties. It goes to say, the human heart shines the brightest during times of utmost darkness. We only shine when we endure hell’s blazing fire. We can only see the potential of life if we are chained down, immobile to move and to think freely. Until then, ordinary people will take what they have for granted. Their outlook will be blurred and what they see will be only perceptions of what they yearn for and what they want. This growing desire to have more is a plague that is undoubtedly harming. Society should look back at stories such as Frankl’s and learn from them. Even when they did not bathe in over 6 months, even when they did not have adequate food for countless of days, they are still optimistic and continue to persevere to make the life they have meaningful and purposeful.

Mans Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankl

I love this reading. Viktor Frankl shows that no matter how rough a situation can be if a person has a goal then they are capable of getting through it. I think that Viktor Frankl's book is so deep with showing someone if they really put their mind into something they can overcome any obstacle. Like I have said before I have read this book and would recommend it to anyone. Although the book is a short read one will have to read the paragraphs a few times because everything Frankl says is deep. I think that when Frankl was saying how the gaurd was throwing a pebble at him he thought of himself as a beast was really ironic because in the end it was the Nazi soldiers that were treated like beasts because they were the ones that were looked down upon all across the world. I am really excited about this discussion tomorrow. :)

Man's Search for Meaning

After reading Frankl's piece, I could not think and imagine the difficulties he'd been through in that concentration camp and still be able to remain positive and be successful in life later. At first I thought that the story is about his preachings on how to be successful in life and things that we should do. But as I read deeper into the story, I realized that his story was about his time in the holocaust camp. For the first paragraph, when he stated "Happiness must happen, and the same holds for success:you have to let it happen by not caring about it" (1). I somewhat agree with him about that line because the more a person thinks about and stress out on how he's going to be successful the more likely that he's going to fail because of the roadblocks and setbacks that's going to happen due to trying to make the perfect plan for the future. The next line that caught my attention was when he said "...everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms- to choose one's attitude in any set of circumstances" (12). I agree with him because an individual's attitude is their own freedom that cannot be taken away because that is one thing that a person is going to have for the rest of their life. It is also up to that person how he/she's going to act in certain situation. As for Frankl, even though some people in the camp had given up his attitude remained positive all the way which help him survive and be successful later.

I find it interesting how Frankl refers to animals a couple of times in his writing. He writes how he felt more hurt when a rock was thrown at him because he felt like he was treated like an animal, "a creature with which you have so little in common that you do not even punish it", and nothing more. It hurt because had the guard cursed at him, made an insult, or even a blow, he would have felt more like a human. The guard throwing a rock at him was worse because he felt less of a human, one that was not even worthy of an insult or a blow. However, Frankl found a way to survive his physical and mental suffering by focusing and experiencing the beauty of art and nature of the mountains of Salzburg glowing in the sunset. The beauty of nature was a way for the prisoners to excape their suffering mentally and sort of appreciate the "art" surrounding them (the mountains and the sunset). Prisoners were able to stand and survive their harsh experiences by taking advantage of the last of their human freedoms; "to choose one's attitude in any given set of circumstances". Through this spiritual freedom, it can be said that they were worthy of their sufferings. And as Frankl said it, "it is this spiritual freedom - which cannot be taken away - that makes life meaningful and purposful" (15).

First, Satyagraha means Truth-force. The truth also means sould or spirit. The author explains the ideal truth can never be obtained by men, so we should not use violence to get what we want.Human can not gain happiness or victory as long there is violence. In order to get a Successful Satyagraha, men should avoid the use of violence in any means, whether in opinion, language, or action. Victory is still possible if we don't fight back and if we try to seek for calmness/peace/compromise during a fight, victory will certainly be on our sides. Courage and discipline are necessary in order to seek of non-violence action.Men and women must feel the same way, target for the same goal, work together to solve problems without the use of force or war.

Man's Search for Meaning

This is a very touching piece. Victor Frankl gives us a peek into his mind during his days in a concentration camp. He describes in detail what it was like to be in the camps. The hardships, the work, and undernourishment they received. I think the message he was trying to relay was that no matter the hardship or suffering someone is going through the mind can be an escape. A person's imagination is a powerful tool. "This intensification of inner life helped...find a refuge from the emptiness, desolation, and spiritual poverty of his existence, by letting him escape into the past." The prisoners and Frankl were able to stay sane and block out the suffering they endured.

A Simple Path and an Open Heart
Only a Buddhist can say their religion is best without anyone hating them. The Dali Lama's writing is easy and straight forward; he loves his faith, but respects each and every one. He knows Buddhism is not for everyone yet it is the best suited for him personally. I believe there is something behind his words though when he says, these other religions have great potential to create a good heart. I believe he is already telling you what the emphasis or practice of Buddhism is about, and how that is why it is so different. The teachings of Buddhism are so hard to accomplish, just because we live in such an incredibly materialistic world. Pursuing the life of luxury has definitely become an obstacle for me, and I would say about ninety percent of American teenagers as well. If we spent as much time developing our mental attitudes as we did shopping this would be a completely different place. The Dalai Lama goes on to say how this mental state we are in is what causes most of our problems and it is true. People like to play games, and see others hurt even though they know it will come back to them. Buddhism and his words do not even need a religion; they are states of being that everyone needs to practice.

Man's Search for Meaning by Viktor E. Frankl

"Don't aim at success-the more you aim at it and make it a target, the more you are going to miss it." This quote really got to me. So basically what Frankl is saying is that have a goal, but don't dedicat your life to that goal. Do other things as well. And without knowing it, you will have achieve your goal you wanted all along.

I found this story just plain sad. I have read point of view stories of the Holocaust, but even in this short two page expert, it seems to have more detail than others. I was not sure if this was about the Holocaust until it mentioned the "mass behind barbed wire". Then I knew what it was about.

In paragraph 7 when Frankl writes about passing Vienna where he grew up, you can just picture a little boy playing there. And now he is there for a totally different reason. So horrible to think people could do that to someone. For no reason at all. It makes you think.

I can not imagine what Frankl went through. I do have major respect for someone who can come out of something as horrible as the Holocaust, and be able to speak about it.

Question for everyone: The book Frankl is talking about...Does anyone know what that book is? I wouldn't mind reading it. It sounds like an interesting book.

Viktor Frankl

This story is a travesty, yet beautfiul. To read about all the horrible things that happened to this man (even though we were only informed of a small portion) was absolutely devastating. However, he was able to always keep his composure and take himself to a better place. It is sad that he and the others were forced to do so, but they brought themselves back to the trivial apects of everyday life. This is what consumed their minds during the days. He was treated like an animal, robbed of his freedom, was away while his wife died, and was still able to come out civil and lacking hate. I think it takes an amazing person to take his approach. It shows much self respect and discipline. Imagine the feeling he got when he was riding by his home: not long before he could have been found inside with his wife. That life for him was over, and he understood it. I have never met someone who lives this way. I am sure that with changing times, people change, too. I can only hope to encounter people with as much character and pride that this exemplified throughout this piece.

Man’s Search for Meaning

True life stories of the Holocaust are rare and can hit you like a ton of bricks. Realizing what horror and pain that the people held in concentration camps went to just to survive another day, another hour, or just another second is immense. Their will to survive was greatly challenged and the mass majority was defeated. Clinging to their last drop of life and energy made many of them desperate and value what little light they saw in their dark hell. I think that this reading is based on perception and the freedoms you allow yourself to have. Even with what little they had their inner love and spiritual life could not be lost. His optimism did not allow room for all the surrounding negatives. Viktor Frankl is one of the survivors and has not let his past cast a spell over his present or his future. Through his life struggle of the memories that he has of the concentration camp he has found happiness and success.

Spongebob Facts

I thought this was funny and it related to writing. The other day I saw Spongebob where Patrick was trying to write a poem. He keeps procrastinating, asks Spongebob, "This pencil is broken, why won't it make words?" Then when he's ready he says, "I wish not to be disturbed, for I am about to erupt with a masterpiece." It turns out the reason he is scared to write and share it is because he is tramatized of an incident that happened to him when he shared his poem in high school. It turns out he is a terrible writer, but he and Spongebob like his finished poem! So we must remember, as long we are writing to the best of our ability and we have each other's support, we should be ok! :)

Man's Search for Meaning by Viktor E. Frankl

I remember reading this book when I was in high school. I'm pretty sure it was Mr. Hsiao, whom I had as a student teacher, required the reading. I remember dreading reading the book until I started. This book is an amazing piece of literature. Frankl's expression and intense connection to the concentration camp and his reaction to it is incredible. The way he overcomes the struggles that would be unbearable to others never ceases to amaze me. He make the best out of a terrible situation, which is hard to do. I love the part which quotes "The book addresses present-day concerns and how it is possible to "say yes to life" in spite of all the tragic aspects of human existence. To hark back to its title, it is hoped that "optimism" for our future may flow from the lesson learned from our "tragic" past". I admire this quote because it is almost like saying "rise from the ashes". Don't dwell on the past, but instead learn and grow from it. Don't sit in sorrow and pity yourself because it will get you nowhere. Instead take your experiences and teach the world from them. His words are inspirational. If you liked this excerpt, you would love his book.

in viktor frankl's man search for meaning, i believed that the main character, viktor, was a hero. most everyone has heard of the holocaust and how devastating it was to the jewish race. viktor was thrown into a camp and was put to work or inspected almost daily. the other men around him decided to play a game to see who would die next. i remember a quote from the story that went something like this, "we have turned into mere courpses of what we were, mere skeltons." viktor never once wanted to give up and the only thing pushing him to stay alive was to see his wife one last time. sadly, you find out she died but, viktor went on to teach others about his horrible experience and how to prevent something like what the holocaust was from happening again.

The erosion of civilization by Jared Diamond Paragraph Three
Now that one understands the cause and effects of the infertile crescent, let us see if there is anything we can do. One would like to be sympathetic to the author’s pain toward this region. There seems to be a connection that he has toward the people there and the pain suffered around the world in similar regions that are suffering similar fates. All of these regions seem to be on the same latitude line that has been void of rain for some time. That was the key to Jared Diamond’s whole writing. Animals and plants all need the same thing; they need water. One can agree with him that the cause and effect seems to have come from one common problem, ‘lack of rainfall’. So if we can make rain can we turn back time for these people? If not, should we donate food and money to help them in time of need? One looks at today’s technology and offers a choice of solutions. One idea might be to loan the country money for a dam project so when there is rainfall it does not just wash out to the sea. Another Idea although expensive may be cloud seeding. It is sure that the infertile crescent area could not afford their own dam due to the greed of their present oil families, but could we take the region over by force and use the oil money to feed the poor and re establish an irrigation system. Those who are hungry and thirsty would agree. It is not the people who are to blame, it is the situation. As long as the rich will not hear the poor, the poor will get poorer. Donated money will only run out if it is not replenished. People with something to look forward to and consequences to answer for will not kill each other for the most part.

I think I am going to change my career path, and for some odd reason I feel guilty. Like I am letting people down or something. I know I shouldn't, and that people change their minds all the time. Wow Monique that is a powerful picture! I can relate somewhat. My son's dad will be deployed to Iraq soon. While he was away at training for 3 months, my son had a picture of him in his complete armed forces uniform. He came for 10 days, and when I picked him up at the airport, my son did not know how to react to him. He didn't want to hug, kiss, or say anything to his daddy. He was in his uniform. But for the next 10 days, they were inseperable! My son would leap up whenever his daddy came to pick him up. But this last Tuesday, I drove him back to the airport. He was wearing his uniform again, and my son started to cry as soon as he saw him. He cried and ignored his daddy all the way to the airport. He's only 2, but I know he associates daddy's uniform with his absence. Luckily, his attitude (miraculously) changed and was happy and loving to his dad until we said goodbye. We waved goodbye together until we couldn't see him anymore. He will be gone a year, and I know that my son will have a difficult time. I can't imagine how he will react and how he will adjust to his dad's return after a year of deployment in comparison to the reunion after the 3 month absence.

Figured I'd get this out of the way asap in case I forget!

Well, that was my very first time ever doing any type of community service, and I have to say it was amazing. I'm considering going every month now, but I can't help but wonder how they manage to do all of that without having as many people as we did today. It really was an amazing experience, and pretty fun at the same time!

Also, I helped man the extremely important coconut station, and restocked them as fast as I could. First time in my life ever holding a real life whole coconut, and I had the time of my life shaking them. ^.^)d

Besides the feeling of doing a great deed in the community, the best part was when ERIC CONTRERAS FROM ENGLISH 103 CERRITOS COLLEGE locked himself out of his van shortly after telling him a story of a time a friend of mine locked himself out of his car when we went out. Ironically she was just telling me about a time in which she had locked her keys in her car once before... Curiously thinking about what just happened, I looked at my car door and noticed that the it was locked and my keys were in the ignition. Veronica turns to me and asks if i have my keys. I very calmly say " No they're locked in my car and i can't get them out" She of course does not believe me because i was not panicing or freaking out. But this was a very serious situation indeed. I called my friend who used to have a spare key for my car but when i asked him, he said that he didnt have it. So i told the Professor (Mr. Hsaio) and asked if anyone had a hanger in their car so that I can unlock my car with it. Fortunately someone did!

I tried and tried to unlock the door but my attempts failed. What surprised me the most is the help i recieved from the different people around, like Charleen, Brian, and a few students from Golden West. It was actually incredible to see these people, complete strangers to me, come to my aid and even care enough to assist in any way. I have so much appreciation for not only those who personally helped me but for everyone now. Surprisingly this has changed my point of view on how people are. Maybe they were secretly anxious about leaving on time and were very angry with me because I was holding them back from leaving at the expected time of 7:30 not 8:00. My apologies everyone! It will NOT happen again.
But still I am greatly appreciative of the help i recieved.

The food drive was a great cause that I am very glad to have experienced. It has opened my eyes to some very important issues. I have realized that there are way more people who have been affected by poverty and homlessness. It was a surprise to see how different the people we served looked as far as their clothes and general appearence. I at first thought that we were going to serve people that were suffering extreme situations who looked like some of the homeless that are seen on the streets, but they seemed to be better taken care of than other homeless people that i usually see. They honestly looked like ordinary people. It kind of makes me realize how close we can be to that line in which we could very much be homeless ourselves. I am not in any way wealthier than any of those people i served today. I am sure that we share many of the same qualities. I did not see sorrow or hatred in the eyes of any of them. They all seemed thankfull, appreciative, and happy for what they were recieving, and it only made me happier to give it to them. I not only gave them food, I gave them hope, love, and I showed them that I care. Incredible experience for me. I guess i really am a warm-hearted person. Thank you Dali Lama.

Now I await the time of humiliation by Professor Hsaio on Monday, and it is not all about the situation prior to getting on the bus. It will hopfully be very entertaining to the class. It's all in good fun i'm sure...

Posting is fun I don't care what anybody says...lol

So, I just emailed Mr. Hsaio my outline for the midterm paper. It took me awhile to figure out how to do it too. As you all know we have to email through microsoft word and I thought I was doing it right. But, I wasn't. I had to somehow sync my aol email to microsoft outlook. I did it. Thank god! Here is a helpful hint for the midterm: There are grammar quizzes you can take online to practice. Just google run-ons and fragment quizzes. Hope it helps, because it's helping me. I hope everyone is having a wonderful night. Peace!

Well, it's only Saturday night and already I have had a long weekend! I went to my church this morning to take my son to religious ed classes and to help my aunt, who is the director of religious ed. After that, my sister came with my kids and I to the Fire Safety Expo that Santa Fe Springs had at their fire station. My kids had a good time, and I did too. We got to go in the ambulance and check out everything that they have inside. I've been in an ambulance 3 times now, and it was nice to be able to sit inside an ambulance without being strapped to the bed or being with my child strapped to the bed! At the end we went for a ride on their antique fire truck, my boys really enjoyed that! After all that I took my sister to her house and my kids and I went home, ate, and went back out to get last minute necessities for my grandparents' 50th anniversary party next Saturday. I am so tired right now!! I had a good day though, and I hope tomorrow is not too rough on me, I'm tired of fighting to stay awake in my classes all day long! Anyways, the reason I'm on here is to post some of my homework!

Here are my run-ons and fragments:

Well to start off: Have a great game today! Angels shall yet again bet Boston. Can't wait to see that...again!

I do not know if I am the only one; but does anyone have a clue about the analysis of the midterm? I want to write on it, but I am not sure how to format it I guess. Well not really format, just organize it. Do we start off just by summarizing the story we are doing; or do we just give our opinion about the story? If someone can let me know that would be great. Thanks.

Second Harvest Food Drive:

Waking up at five in the morning was hard to do, but it helped that I was not the only "teenager" getting up that early. Along with all of us getting up early, my lovely mom had to get up also.
Since my mom also went on the trip she insisted on waking up early, as well as getting to the college before anyone else. We were there at 6:45. Like I told her before we got there, no one will be there that early. Instead of staying there we went over to AMPM across the street to get something quick to eat. By the time we got back, at 7:10 about, the parking lot looking full. Now we were not the first people. I could not be happier.
After waiting for someone [Eric I guess, since he posted earlier about it.] to get their keys out of the car, we were on the bus back to where my mom and I just drove from.
I was one of the lucky ones when we got to the church. I had a paper and pen to take notes. Well more actually my mom had paper and a pen to take notes. "Poor have a special place in God's heart." I really enjoyed when the guy said that. That must mean a lot to the people who show up every month. To hear that 80% of the public are in poverty is crazy. I knew the number was high, but 80%. Something needs to be done about that. We actually should not have food banks. But that is not possible with all the mouths that need to be feed.
Helping give food to people in need was a great satisfaction, and a surreal memory. My mom, brother, and I used to actually go to food banks for years when I was still a kid. We were one of the families that were at the 80%. It felt incredible to give back to people who once assisted us. It was an experience I did not actually want to end. Actually from now on when they have the Second Harvest Food Drive my mom and I are going. [Also if anyone else wants to go, just let me know.] It was a great experience, and I cannot wait to do it again.
After helping out with the food drive we went to Los Sanchez. Cheapest, and yet most filling Mexican Food I had in a while. I ended up having lunch and dinner all for one cheap price.
The bus to and from the church seemed long, even though it was not. Luckily I brought my book and was able to almost finish the whole thing.

Dalene - I am in the same boat. I think we are all just a little nervous about the midterm. Anyway, below is what I have in my notes for the structure of each essay...

Cause and Effect
BP1: Causes
BP2: Effects
BP3: Analysis. Why?

Compare and Contrast (MLK/Obama)
BP1: Similarities
BP2: Differences
BP3: Has change happened? Analysis

For both essays, your first two paragraphs will be an objective analysis. The third paragraph is where you're supposed to express your opinions about the issue. Does that make sense? If not, let me know, and I'll do my best to help!

On another note... I noticed that some people are posting their entire paragraph for the midterm; however, I think he said to only post your outline for the third paragraph. Just wanted to let you all know!

Hola everyone!!! Well it has been a while since I've been able to blog. I missed class late week, and I feel on one of the most important days. What has been happening on my end, lots. About 4 weeks ago Pancho’s uncle became sick with fever, nausea, body aches. He went to visit his doctor, and he told him that he had a virus to wait it out. Two weeks passed and hid uncle did not get better. He returned to his doctor and he told him the same thing. A week and a half later passed, same symptoms, and now loss of weight, appetitive, depressed, and just really down in the dumps decided to call Pancho, actually his wife did. Pancho had an uncle that is a doctor in Rosarito, Mexico so they decided since they were not getting any answers to his uncles questions, how they kept saying it was a virus, they went to the uncle/brother. When seeing the doctor/brother he quickly referred him to a specialist, the blood and urine test signaled it was something. Their feelings went two ways 1) it’s not just a virus and to wait it out 2) something serious, but what? I’m not exactly sure how but the idea of “hotchkins disease was thrown in, WOW!! About 10 years ago one of Pancho’s aunts had passed to do that disease. The doctor had Pancho’s uncle go through an MRI, the readings found a 13cm abscess in his liver. The MRI ruled out cancer but now they would need to perform immediate surgery. If he had it done there they would charge $3,000 on top of the $700 he had already spent on tests, exams, and the MRI. Pancho suggested going back to his doctor/Kaiser and show them the exams. This way he can go through his insurance company and not out of pocket. They returned Thursday and went straight to Kaiser and that evening they performed the surgery. So many emotions went through everyone’s mind; it was a very fearful time for the family. Pancho’s uncle is still in the hospital ICU they figure he will be till mid-week. Let’s see what else has been going on. Pancho still has not found a job. My poor husband not finding a job is hurting him as a ‘man’ he feels he isn’t providing for his family. I try and reassure him that it is a bad time for a lot of people and WE will get through it.

Within the last week I’ve been offered 4 jobs!!! Getting to that step has been such work, constant calls, emails, interviews, trainings, ash!! I accepted the position as an RSP Assistant for a Charter School in; oh man I forgot the city!!! Well it’s off the 210 west so that way. I begin as soon as my LiveScan clears. The position is 30 hrs a week, with benefits that take effect the beginning of next month. YAY, insurance!!! I have been so worried about one of my girls getting sick and not knowing what to do. The bad side to this position is I will be coming in max out. I will not be receiving any raises, boooooo. I had to fight them on the salary rate they wanted to start me at what I think is low considering my education and experience. They met my asking rate but because of budget that is the most they will offer and that is where it will stay. It’s been a very difficult few months for my family and I and it seems with my new job things are looking better. This blog/post is a little off sleep has not been a part of my night. I guess it’s the stress.

Second Harvest Food Drive Reflection

The primary memory I have was the smiles on my students’ faces as well as those who were hosting at Village Bible Church. I cannot count how many thankful workers, families, and people came up to my students and I and very sincerely, from the heart, (can there be any other?) shook our hands, hugged us, expressed words of dear gratefulness, and much more. Even though the weather was cold and the sky overcast there was so much warmth around us. It was freely given and received the entire morning.

Yes, we had gotten to the food drive late because of Eric locking his keys in his car, which I will discuss later. However, the outpouring of support and help came fast even before boarding the bus. Students from both schools lent a hand to Eric, and I called Campus Police but to no avail. Some students went to the police station of their own volition, and Eric posted how willing everyone seemed to help or listen to his plight. It really was the spirit of the morning manifested in that first instance of unfortunate circumstance.

Then, the police jimmied open the door, and Eric was able to turn off the radio. We boarded the bus, and headed off. We arrived to the church, and Fred, the elder, was giving us a broad overview of the socioeconomic area. We packed the small room, so that some of my students had to stand! His directive and that of the church was to serve the 80% or more residents in the area who qualify for free or reduced lunches and socioeconomically are well below the poverty line. The directive is to serve the poor or homeless. There are also many high density dwellings meaning that there are many families living close together in small spaces.

Fred had some hilarious moments as he discussed his knowledge of America and Christianity as well as students and their economic situation. He is an educator at Long Beach State, so it makes sense that his passion and humor for his work spoke volumes of his character. He discussed the choice of homelessness—that some choose it as a personal lifestyle, others do not choose but suffer from psychological disorders, and others have little in the way of resources local, familial, or associative. The discussion centered on how Second Harvest and Village Church partner up to emulate the American Red Cross to temporarily stem the hunger of all those who live in impoverished conditions.

Despite the varying religions of Roman Catholicism, Jehovah’s Witnesses, Evangelical, 7th Day Adventists, and Protestant, parishioners in the area, they serve all regardless of denomination. And as servants for the poor, I could easily see the love that they had in their souls for what they do. Pastor Ron discussed the beginning when they started the food drive, and how the Second Harvest trucks did not come. They had to improvise; they drove to local supermarkets and bought food to feed the families. Their work is something that I greatly admire and the reason why coming back to help out has always been a priority for me.

Exhibition A

A Man's search for meaning

I admired Mr. Frankl, his thoughts and expressions through his experience was very touching. He evolved to accept and learn what he went through and not many people can do that. On parragraph 16 and 17 I like how he states that he pictures himself standing across and audience giving a lecture of what he went through. I believe you always have 2 options in life when you go through any experience , you either learn from it or you close and loose yourself. Frankl suffered but never lost faith through his whole story he kept his head. As on paragraph 16 Frankl states "... -even under the most difficult circumstances- to add a deeper meaning to his life."

Second Harvest Reflection

My Students

Everything from seeing Andy P., Kevin S., Bee, Sarai, Aaron, Charleen, Oscar, Brian D., Danielle K, Jessica, Tom, Alonso, Ray, Gabriela go back and forth carrying food for the families to their cars to Priscilla, Samantha S., Kevin L., Nicole, and Brian J. teach the family’s children to play “Simon Says” or “Duck, Duck, Goose” to Veronica, Lulu, Eric, Kim, Samantha N., Dalene, Jessica, Diana, Janice, Andy T. (and Joy), and other students manning the food tables distributing coconuts, peppers, baby food, and many other miscellaneous foods. Thank you for Mariana taking the pictures as well as Isela being the intercessor before families entered the food line.

Rejection

Several of my favorite moments were: how everyone realized there was a task and they went and took on different roles without a second’s notice; how everyone worked and did not take a break except for the bathroom, how some of the older people rejected those who would help—an elderly woman rejected my request to help her, and I knew my students were laughing at the dramatic scene. I helped her friend, and the rejecter, she, eventually apologized to me for hurting my feelings; the circle that we came together after this great experience, and the good news that was shared all around; the twin towers of boxes in which we took our pictures for.

Second Harvest Food Drive Reflection cont. . .

***

Random Notes

Priscilla and Samantha being the thespians that they were, were quite raucous, a pleasant loudness, and I penned the name lost sisters separated at birth because they finished each other sentences and laughed in terms of a higher pitch off one and then the other.

***

Of course, Tom, “the life-of-the-party,” Rios sat next to them when we ate at Los Sanchez. Between the three of them and Priscilla’s friend, I was not able to hear anything out of my right ear.

***

Also, I enjoyed chatting with Dalene’s mother, and of course embarrassing her, but her mother was quite in the spirit and she shared some lovely stories about her daughter: Of course, you know that I asked for more, Dalene, right?

***

Danielle, Bee, Jessica and friend, and I discussed our class and the all the various personalities that have come together—gelling rather nicely.

***

Every time, I passed by Eric he was spouting off on how great his English class was and how he enjoyed the professor! Ha ha.

***

The best memory of the entire morning was the smiles and looks of appreciation given to each and everyone one of us from others.

***

Ending Thought. . .

Mirrors, just mirrors for the world, that day, service to the poor was the penultimate message. The ultimate message was camaraderie and good good times.

***

There are more random notes that I am sure I will think of later, but I have to move on. Thank you for all those who came and served, and the encouraging thing was that some said they would go back and serve in the future.

Great!

Third Body Paragraph Outline

1)Question: Has change happened, or will it happen?
i)Has change happened since MLK’s speech? How?
(1)Yes, change has occurred.
(a)No public segregation
(i)“We couldn't get any books from the library to read. For instance, if I wanted to check out a book on black history, I couldn't do it because I was black. If I wanted to do it, I had to get some white person that I knew to go into and get that, you know, check out that book in her name and just let me read it or use it. And another thing that we had to put up with was in walking to school sometimes--now the girls wouldn't do it but white boys, if you were on the sidewalk and there were three or four white boys coming, they would scatter themselves out so you would have to get off the pavement to pass them. Or maybe they might push you off the pavement, if you didn't get off the pavement.” – Constance Baker
(b)KKK membership in 1960’s: Approx 20,000
KKK membership today: In the low thousands
1.Source: http://afroamhistory.about.com/cs/kukluxklankkk/a/kukluxklan.htm
(c)Encouraged “nonviolent protests” which aided in drawing the
public’s attention to the issue of segregation
(i)Lead the Montgomery Bus Boycott
(ii)His Christian ideals and teachings (non-violence) looked good on both sides of the segregation issue (brought people together)
(2)No, Change has not occurred
(a)Governmental level, change has occurred. However, the minds of some people have not changed (personal, not national)
(i)KKK – Although low in number, still exists
(ii)We segregate ourselves
1.African American neighborhoods vs white neighborhoods
2.The projects – Heavily African American
3.Black income equals only 58% of white income
Source: http://www.cyberlearning-world.com /nhhs/project/1998 /seg.htm
4.April 2007 – A high school in GA had their first integrated prom. In previous years, students chose to have their proms separately based on race
5.The Jena 6
a.Six black teenagers convicted of killing a white student in LA
ii)Has change happened since Obama took office? How?
(1)Change – ambiguous
(2)MLK changed and inspired the hearts of people. Obama’s changes (ambiguous) have been done on a governmental level. No heart involved.
(3)Has change occurred?
(a)In my perspective no. Not in the same way MLK brought change to our country.
(4)Documented “changes” since the Obama presidency
(a)Cash for clunkers. Did it change anything? No. Some argue it may have made it worse
(b)Idea for Health Reform. Did it change anything? No. Great arguments ensued
(c)Bailout. Did it change anything? Hard to tell. Was it natural cycle of the economy, or was it Obama’s bailout plan?
iii)Closing thoughts
(1)MLK inspired a people=greater cause. Obama has not done the same. Presidency is young. May be premature to document the change thus far. Based on facts, change has not occurred in the same way. Not even comparable.

SECOND HARVEST FOOD BANK

Were to start, well guess I start by talking about the morning. The timing was not good at all, because it was a bit too early and on top of that it was cold. Then got a lot better when we arrived at the Village Bible Church, where they were waiting for us. I really enjoyed when Mr. Fred broke down everything for us, in terms of WHY we were there. Indeed, I appreciated the time he took to explain what they do, why they do it, and for whom they do it, because it answered a lot of my questions. I also like the fact that he said that it did not matter if you were or weren’t religious to help out a community in need. Also, the fact that he explained that they were not trying to convert you into their religion. At the begging when the trucks arrived we separated and arranged all the produce on the tables, fixed the grocery bags, and carried stuff around.

I would have to say that one of the best parts about this way meeting an interesting lady named Pat. As soon as we got there she walked towards Gaby, Samantha, and myself and just started talking to us. As soon as I meet her I said to myself, what an interesting lady. She just had an incredible personality that made you want to be like her in a way. Indeed, she was very charismatic, extremely funny and nice. We were in the same table when distributing the food and I can say that she made my morning. Especially when she saw Mr. Hsiao carrying the groceries for someone and said to him, “Oh I know John, he is a wonderful gentleman.” Then as Mr. Hsiao was walking away said, “Oh I don’t even know John”, as she looked at me and Samantha and gave us a smile. Mr. Hsiao was standing right behind her and heard everything, which made it hilarious.

The other best part about this trip was serving others without getting anything in return. I love participating in events like this where you get to help the less fortunate. Not only do you experience a great feeling of satisfaction, but you realize that you take a lot of things for granted. Indeed, I realized that those less fortunate seem to appreciate life more that others, because they appreciate even the tiniest things. I was amazed when one of the gentleman’s from church shared with us, their experience about the previous month Food Drive. How he said that the trucks never got there, so they had to go out and get the families groceries. It was just amazing to hear that someone could go out of their way and spend their own money to help others. He said, “They came for groceries and they were going to leave with groceries.”

3rd Body Paragraph Outline

•There is change comparable to past, Obama first black president for example.
•People are more united than before, out in the open.
•No Segregation laws for races or genders.
•People cause stereotypes; laws cannot do more to help w/o affecting freedom of speech.
•Although Obama has to face a world with existing subtle discrimination, and carry the burden of being the President of a falling nation, he understands people need to unite and change as a whole, not have one single person resolve all problems (Yes –We- Can).
•His speech is more focused on “bigger” problems, not racial tension that we shouldn’t be having in the first place.
•Have come a long way from just a group of people wanting change, to now the nation wanting it as a whole.

Food Drive

The food drive was a very wonderful experience and the first time I have done this type of service. I only slept three hours but somehow I had a ton of energy and was talking to everyone. It started pretty funny because one of the students locked his keys in the car, his name was Erik. The bus was to leave at seven in the morning but had to wait until Erik opened his car and did with the help of a staff member of the police department at Cerritos College. After that the class entered the bus and took off to the food drive. I did not know what to expect once we arrived there but knew it was for a good cause so I did not mind. When we got to the church I walked around and looking were we were and a few moments later one of the staff members told us what to expect and how we were going to help. He told us that Mobile Pantry trunks would deliver 5,ooo pounds of food that consist of fruit, vegetables, and dry foods. The churches name is Village Bible which the people there were really nice. One of the girls was giving us name tags which I put on mine “Hello my name is ……Brian” and others had just their names and one had captain amazing which was also very funny. I got one of the little prayer cards they were giving out and thought it was pretty cool. I dealt with different colors and what it represents to the church. Red is for the blood He gave when Jesus was dying on the cross for us, the nails in His hands and feet made Him bleed. Green is for the grass He made God wants us to enjoy His wonderful creation. Yellow is for the sun so bright like a new sunrise, Jesus rose from the grave on Easter morning. Orange is for the edge of night the Holy Spirit’s fire burns within us and leads us. Black is for the sins we made our sins darken our hearts and make us live in darkness. White is for the grace He gave. Purple is for the hours of sorrow: purple is the royal color, a reminder that Jesus is our King. Pink is for a new tomorrow and for everyday God gives us. This was the colors they talked about and it was called the Jelly Bean Prayer. What made this trip fun was playing with the kids and making them laugh. That’s where I came in the made them laugh but I have to give credit to Pricilla and her crazy ass friend for playing different games with the kids, they both did I great job. I one thing that got me very sad was the joy of one of the parents faces mixed with sorrow, of one of his child in the group, as he saw us playing with his children making them happy and laugh. I will never forget that face of joy.

Second Harvest Food Drive

To those that volunteered we might not have done much, a couple of hours out of our day to help sort out and pass out groceries, then we go back to our lives. But a little effort from us means a big help to those who received the food and the organizers at the church who need help sorting it all out, and their gratitude makes this little action a big one that really counts. I woke up Saturday morning at 6 am (ok I snoozed until 6:40), not knowing what I was going to do that day, but I knew people needed help and I was going to help them. I almost thought about not going because of two upcoming midterms this week and the need to study for them (and the extra one-pager didn’t help!). Nonetheless, I made it. If it wasn’t for Eric locking his keys in his car I probably wouldn’t have made it because I arrived right at 7:30, so I look at it as a blessing in disguise (sorry Eric!). Anyway, my favorite part about being a part of this food drive with this church is that though their work is fueled by their faith and their duty, the do not try to convert those helping or those receiving help. Not only do they not try to change one’s beliefs, but they help those who need it no matter what thetir religion might be. After we were done with sorting and handing the food out, we were ready to eat! Though I was hungry, I only ate about a quarter of my food (so much food!) and I took a nap on the way back to school. Like I said, we go back to our normal lives after donating two hours of our time, but today and for a few more days the people who received food are not worrying about where they will get the money to feed themselves and their children, and knowing this is worth it, our decision to wake up early benefited those who needed it.

Second Food Harvest Drive

Let me start off to say that it was a great way to start my Saturday morning. Even though I did not get to sleep in like I usually do on a Saturday morning haha. Waking up at 6 in the morning, well a little after 6 because of the cool snooze button haha, but anyways, I was excited and at the same time did not know what to expect. I did not want to get left behind so I quickly got dressed and jammed out my front door with a strawberry pop tart mmm. I quickly got to Joy's house and totally forgot about my bags! After begging Joy for some bags, I got some haha. When finally arriving at the school parking lot, I looked at everyone's face and noticed the same look similar to...zombies! It was hard to wake up early but it was worth it! When getting on the bus, I immediately fell asleep. Thinking we were heading towards Los Sanchez as we did for the Museum of Tolerance, all I had was a strawberry pop tart. I then woke up and found myself at the Village Bible Church and not a Los Sanchez (LOL!)...After getting off the bus, we quickly went into a briefing room with Fred. Fred was quite a funny fellow. I don't think anyone noticed but, Joy was sleeping right in front of Fred haha! After the briefing, we walked out to the back to wait for the trucks of food. One of the ladies handing out name tags was funny. She told me I could be anyone...so I chose Captain Awesome haha! Throughout the food drive, I did not know there was this "Who's Captain Awesome?" gossip thing going around...Made me kind of famous when I was spotted by a couple of people. Anyways, when the two trucks arrived, it was like Christmas. Boxes of foods poured out the back(Not literally). I was amazed at how much food there actually was. Boxes of mushrooms, melons, potatoes etc. When it was time to get to get everything packed up, it was pretty fun! Joy was spontaneous and wanted to do everything so we moved from table to table bagging up all sorts of foods. When finished bagging, the line started to get packed with families carrying big boxes and baskets. When we got to distributing, I was staged at the chili and bananas table lol. That sounded funny haha. I kept saying Chili? with the spanish accent and the people in line were just laughing...Was it my accent??? Some of the students told me they saw the same people in line a couple of times haha. The funny thing about that day was when Joy and I had a big box of food by the end of the day. Kind of looked like we stole the food or something lol...but John, one of the staffs at the church, told us that this was the second round and so we could take some of the foods that were extra. And for him, he had his eyes locked onto the huge portabella mushrooms haha! By the end of the day, a lady that was part of the church approached me and said how thankful she was that we came to help distribute the foods that day. That particular day was special because they had a two trucks coming in this time. Usually only one truck would come in but since the Anaheim convention center had something going on and had extra foods, they donated extra. I had a warm feeling inside of me...a happy feeling knowing that I was able to contribute towards the hungry and families. Thanks Mr. Hsiao for letting us come out and help!
