In addition, for the title, pick the topic of discussion, grammar/organization, content, current events, pop culture or literature as a TITLE that we have discussed in class. Write the posts like this: write #1 Post or #2 Post or Post #50, so I can easily keep track of them and how many you write.
Of course, you are welcome to write more than several posts, and in doing so is another form of participation and does count in the participation grade. Perhaps, in class, you may not participate all that much but in the realm of the blogosphere, you can from the comfort of your own home,
- reflect on the day's class discussion or offer up an insight that you found particularly interesting, etc., etc.
- How does it change the way you think or thought before on the subject?
- What actions might you take in the future? Anything is open to interpretation.
Of course, I need not go on and on about being respectful towards your peers' opinions and beliefs. If you disagree with another student's views be discreet about it: Do not say so and so is completely wrong because of this and that. Instead, say, I disagree with so and so and here are the reasons why I do. Go after their evidence and support and do not, I repeat do not attack someone else personally. This is supposed to be a forum for everyone to share their ideas and views.

**Finally a break in the action.**
Man...whats with the posters? Please don't tell me we're getting burned out? For myself and I'm sure for many others this week and the next are the dreaded midterms.
Keep the spirits high, eat and sleep well. Your brain is a muscle, exercise it! Feed it!
Hopfully our post rate grows...
Amador,
I know what your going through, I've been at the bedsides of many of friends. Many events haunt even my nightmares. 'Tis a curse I battle. Be strong for your friend, your companion. Guilt of fault/blame is the following factor which tales us. Hold on, don't let go...and I'm sure he wont.
Life always landslides our path every now and then. Either pull out the winch and crawl over the rubble or go around. There is no right or wrong way. In the end you'll make it though. Keep up with the class work, I know its tough, but your tougher.
-----------------------------------
Ah so going back to something that I wanted to talk about earlier. Which I didn't have a chance to get back to last night.
Heres my question:
For what reasons has our society become so sleazy?
********************
Is it morals? Influences?
the examples
Look at any freeway here in SoCal, LA, the parking lot of Dodgers staduim...
What do they all have in common? Trash. Cigaretts, baby diapers, bottles, cans, condoms(yeah sick)...the list is infinite. WHY? Are there servents to clean up? Disturbing.
I really can't wait for the beach clean up...I think its a great idea.
What about grafitti...
I must admit, I've seen some mad skills with the rattle can, but why not put it on paper. Instead certain individuals vandalize others hard work and money. Even something such as etching in a desk are eye sores. Do we really lack respect for possessions other then our own?
We're a growing population and at this consistant rate what are we going to leave behind for our youth?
What I'm getting at:
Often seen by young children, the dishonerable influences work their way in. We all desire respect but repect takes many shapes and forms. Why not expand ourselves and try to honor those other modes.
Here is one of my favorite quotes from Confucious:
"A youth is to be regarded with respect. How do you know that his future will not be equal to our present?"
From what I can see...it wont be. Not unless we practise more preventative measures...
---------------------------------
Lets get the post counts moving, Prof. H is having to pick up our dead weight! Glad to see we're over 1600 though.

The topic of conversations during class tends to get very intense with my classmates. Everyone has their own opinion and its great. Sometimes the topics can become very sensative subjucts to certain people, but I think that people have to understand that everyone has thier own opinion and we have to respect that. We may encounter certain topics that we may not feel comfortable with, but I think that those are the times where you need to speak up and state your feelings or opinions on that certain subject. I really respect the people that speak up in class and state exactly how they feel. Thats something I have a hard time with, but I am working on it. I wanted to comment on the topic of abortion. I know that was something we briefly spoke about; but I agree with a fellow classmate on pro life. That is all there is to it. Everyone has their own opinion and this is a subject that could go on forever, but that is what I stand by.

Midterm Review
In The Allegory of the Cave, by Plato, he had wrote, “And now look again, and see what will naturally follow if the prisoners are released and disabused of their error. At first, when any of them is liberated and compelled suddenly to stand up and turn his neck round and walk and look towards the light, he will suffer sharp pains; the glare will distress him, and he will be unable to see the realities of which his former state he had seen the shadows; and then conceive some one saying to him, that what he saw before was an illusion, but that now, when he is approaching nearer to being and his eye is turned towards more real existence, he has a clearer vision, -what will be his reply? And you may further imagine that his instructor is pointing to the objects as they pass and requiring him to name them, –he will not be perplexed? Will he not fancy that the shadows which he formerly saw are truer than the objects which are now shown to him?” (Paragraph 15).
I decided to do pick this paragraph because this shapes the way society is today. There are many people out there that are reluctant to change and they will do anything not to do so. People are so dependent on the objects or daily routines they have now they may even be scared to change. In this paragraph Plato states, “At first, when any of them is liberated and compelled suddenly to stand up and turn his neck round and walk and look towards the light, he will suffer sharp pains; the glare will distress him, and he will be unable to see the realities of which his former state he had seen the shadows;”(Line two through four). This to me represents the people who are willing to try to change and these are like the baby steps. For example, say someone is an alcoholic and they are wanting to become sober. The person knows they need to change and are willing to, but when they see what they are going to have to give up they become frightened. The person knows that this alcohol they are addicted to helps them with their problems and they know they can no longer turn to it if they want to become sober. This is one of the hardest processes in life. Trying to change things for the better when one is having to give up something they are so dependent on. The person will not be able to see what life was like when they were not alcoholics because the person would be so focused alcohol. It is addicting and the person will have withdrawals, thus being the shadows. Changing something for the better is very hard and especially when the change is life changing. In _The Allegory of the Cave_ I believe that in this paragraph Plato is trying to say that life is hard and changing is even harder. There will be times when someone wants to fall back down and go into their cave, but I think Plato is trying to say that even though there are hard times, people should surround themselves with the ones who care and will be there for one another during the time that they want fall. When a person is showing someone the right thing to do, would one think that the other person is right, right away? Or does one think that the other will need time to perplex about the situations, even if it is the right answer. People are scared to change, and that holds them back. Just like the cave does in this story.

Well, I saw Eagle Eye this weekend...... Pretty kick ass. Good plot, crazy twists. Over all I was very satisfied. One thing that caught my eye was how well everything ties in. Seriously, its crazy some of the things it does. And by it, I mean what's calling and controling them. Anyhoo, I recommend this movie.

good luck on the mid-term everyone
this is my take on status anxiety, paragraph 2. i think that a successful person should proud of his/her own accomplishments rather than aqquire it through an inheritance or will. money is something that is only good to you depending on ow much you hae of it. in other sense, money cantt bring you happiness, and if it does then its brief. in paragraph 8 it also says that if people have too much money they tend to show it off. for instance, people all of a sudden start having money, and lots of it, hen they will want to spend it, especially if they dont know what to do with it. also, usually, otther people tend see this and think of ways to take advantage of it.

I picked paragraph 16, of Status Anxiety:
"Christian moralists have long understood that to the end of reassuring the anxious, they will do well to emphasize that contrary to the first principle of optimism everything will in fact turn out for the worst: the ceiling will collapse, the statue will topple, we will die, everyone we love will vanish, and all our achievements and even our names will be trod underfoot. We may derive some comfort from this, however, if a part of us is able instinctively to recognize how closely our miseries are bound up with the grandiosity of our amibitions. To consider our petty status worries from the perspective of a thousand years hence is to be granted rare, tranquilizing glimpse of our own insignificance.
THESIS: This passage is telling the readers that everybody will die someday and the world will end as well. Being a person with morals or a belief in God will be rewarded after death, even if was not rewarded so much during their time on earth. Also, being a person of wealth, richs, fame, and just caring about material possesions, already got their reward in life. Now in death all that stuff that mattered in earth and life, does not matter no longer. It is pretty much worth nothing.
This is what I believe the thesis is in this passage.

I picked paragraph 17 from Status Anxiety.
I would like to support the idea of what this paragraph is trying to tell us. Most of us humans think of ourselves as the greatest thing on earth, never stop to realize what we really are sorrunded by. Because we covered all of it with cement and fences. We quickly turned to material goods, and made our lives to strive for one purpose; material goods. But we must understand that material goods kill the soul, it derives our values, imagination, effort, and limits our perception. The earth has much more beauty, which we have forgotten through the illusions society has put in our minds. We used culture to make the world into what we want it to be. All of us see the world through imagery that is fed to us by television, adds on the street, radio etc. But is it really the image of the real world? or just an illusion. We are told what to buy, what to wear, and what is good and what is wrong through television. Its like we have gotten to the point that it feels like we are being farmed just like the livestock we feed on; the population is so big that the ones who have the power/rich are investing in us, we are the product in a way. We keep them rich and their future generetions rich. How? they want us to keep populating, having babies...becuase those babies are going to be adults in a couple of years, and what are they going to do? buyn their products, consume, buy buy buy have more children. And the cycle begins all over again. we are their product, almost every country does this take china for example, only a few are rich(10%) and the rest are poor(90%) their is no middle class. Its the same here in America, just not that noticeable. Why? because we are afraid of the truth, or just plain naive and arrogant. But most are just lost to the subconcious control of the images and sounds of televesion. So please throw away your television. Why dont we know anything about the fore fathers who founded this country? only the first president. Why have they been hiding in secreacy? why are they calling themselves the government? or so they say. who is they? you will only find more questions...
...pleaze excuse any misunderstanding, i wrote this in ten min during break....

I chose paragraph 14 from Man's Search for Meaning.
Mr. Hsiao, the paragraph is too long and i have to get back to work. I'll just give the thesis.
Thesis: Its saying that the decisions one makes has nothing to do with their past. One can't blame their poor decisions on the lifestyle they had or have. People blame their life for the poor decisions that they make. One's past only plays a small part on the decisions that are made. Everyone has the power to decide what is going to be made of them, one cannot keep on blaming an event that occurred earlier in their life. Any choice made, mentally or spiritually, one has the power to make it a good or bad decision. In the end, it all comes down to an inner decision one makes on their own, and cannot be blamed on one's past.

And so it is both strange and remarkable-to me that-among those dozen of books I have authoed-precisely this one, which I intended to be published anonymously so that it could never build up my reputation on the part of the author, did become a success. Again and again I therefore admonish my students in Europe and in America: "Don't aim at success-the more you aim at it and make it a target, the more you are going to miss it. For success, like happiness, cannot be pursued; it must ensue, and it only does so as the unintended side-effect of one's personal dedication to a cause greater than oneself or as the by-product of one's surrender to a person other than oneself. Happiness must happen, and the same holds true for success:you have to let it happen by not caring about it. I want you to listen to what your conscience commands of you to do and go on to carry it out to the best of your knowledge. Then you will live to see that in the long run-in the long run, I say!-success will follow you precisely because you have forgotten to think about it.
This paragraph is about just letting happiness and success come to you. Forgetting about happiness and success and just letting life happen, yours will reap the rewards in life. This is what happened to Viktor Frankl in Man's Search for Meaning, he states, "Don't aim at success-the more you aim at it and make it a target, the more you are going to miss it"(1). Viktor Frankl did exactly that, he had intended to publish this book anonymously. What happened is the book ended up being a success.

"I would like to mention a few similar surprises on how much we could endure: we were unable to clean our teeth, and yet, in spite of it all and a severe vitamin deficiency, we had healthier gums than ever before. we had to wear the same shirts for half a year until they had lost all appearance of being shirts. For days we were unable to wash, even partially, because the frozen water-pipes, and yet the sores and abrasions on hands which were dirty from work in the soil did no suppurate (that is, unless there was frostbite). Or for instance, a lighter sleeper who used to be disturbed by the slightest noise in the next room, now found himself lying pressed against a comrade who snored loudly a few inches from his ear and yet sleep quite soundly through the noise" (Frankl's "Man's search for meaning" 3).
What I gather from this paragraph is that people can come together in hard times and be one with each other. All differences are set aside so that they may live harmoniously. Through my personal experiences I have witnessed this first hand, where men from all walks of life can became the best of friends through harsh conditions. When in extreme conditions, the simplest of joy's become incredibly important. The fact that Frankl states "we were unable to clean our teeth,... we had healthier gums than ever before" is evidence of the excitement in a little joy of life.

In Amy Tan's _Mother Tongue_, she states, "I think my mother's English almost had an effect on limiting my possibilities in life as well. Sociologists and linguists probably will tell you that a person's developing language skills are more influenced by peers. However, I do think that the language spoken in the family, especially in immigrant families, which are more insular, plays a large role in shaping the language of the child. And I believe that it affected my results on achievement tests, IQ tests, and the SAT. While my English skills were never judged as poor, compared to math, English could not be considered my strong suit(7)."
I chose this paragraph because not only was it a pretty easy straight forward topic, but also because I believe that everything she states is what's really goin on with families, better yet, immigrant families, families where the parents do not know how to speak well(proper English). They don't know how to pronounce many words the correct way. Even worst, they don't know how to express or communicate their thoughts well, that they come off throwing some of their native languages in to finish off or to complete their thoughts. This is how they tend to talk to their peers and others around them, but those who are greatly affected are the young ones who go on day by day, listening to their language skills. The worst thing about it is that these young ones adapt to it because nobody seems to be correcting anyone. I think this has an impact on everyone because like Amy said, it really does limit one's possibilities in life, and it limits one's thoughts/expressions as well.
So the thesis in my opinion is:
One's language skills are influenced by one's peers.
But in reality, one's whole life is influenced by those in one's life.

In paragraph 10 of Only Daughter by Sandra Cisneros says, "When my oldest brother graduated from medical school, he fulfilled my father's dream that we study hard and use this-our heads, instead of this-our hands. Even now my father's hands are thick and yellow, stubby by a history of hammer and nails and twine and coils and springs. "Use this", my father said, tapping his head, "and not this", showing us those hands. He always looked tired when he said it".
This paragraph is saying how Sandra's father does not want his children to have to work as hard as he did doing physical labor. He knows that his children are intelligent and are capable of using their intelligents to get them through life. Her father had to work hard to support his family and does not want his children to have to go through what he had to go through.

Status Anxiety Paragraph 9
"Life seems to be a process of replacing one anxiety with another and substituting one desire for another-which is not to say we should never strive to overcome any of our anxieties or fulfill any of our desires but rather to suggest that we should perhaps build into our strivings an awareness of the way our goals promise us a respite and a resolution that they cannot, by definition, deliver."
I believe that this is the thesis of paragraph 9. Its a very complex sentence and one has to read it a few times to get the meaning of what the writer is trying to say. To dumb it down a little this sentence is very simple. We live our lives with all these material things for a quick fix but one should stop and think about the things that money cannot buy. Commitments that are called goal in life should be what makes one happy. To be able to surround oneself with the non material objects and appreciate what one has should be the main focus in life.
This is what I feel that the thesis is trying to say.
Wal-Mart is just one of the machines that drives all private businesses under: Mr. Hsiao
I agree with what you stated
However,
Dud they come to be one of the biggest retailers overnight? Or did it take hard work and smart maneuvers to make it to the top? Aren't they an example of the american dream? Wasn't walmart a samll business once upon a time?.
I agree walmart has put small businesses in bankrupcy, but isn't that part of our nature? The strongest survive, the weak don't. The world of business is tough, some make it, most don't. Competition is hard, and Wal-Mart just found a way to make better deals for its costumers.
Honestly
Would you rather buy something for 3 dollars, rather than 4 or 5 at your local tender? Hmm
Shit, I'm not rich, I count my pennies and saving each penny is important to me.
Do I support private business?
Yes, yes I do, but when I see a better deal for me, I'm taking that deal.
Why am I deffending Wal Mart you may ask?
Because to me, Wal Mart is a clear example of the american dream, the dream many have, the dream so succeed, to be the big fish, to become a magnate.
Ps
Maybe if we stop thinking every succesful business or person out there are trying to get rid of us can help us live better? Idk

Mid Term Review
"And now, I said, let me show in a figure how far our nature is enlightened or unenlightened;--Behold! human beings living in a underground den, which has a mouth open towards the light and reaching all along the den; here they have been from their childhood, and have their legs and necks chained so they cannot move, and can only see before them, being prevented by the chains from turning round their heads. Above and behind them a fire is blazing at a distance, and between the fire and the prisoners there is a raised way; and you will see, if you look, a low wall built along the way, like the screen which marionette players have in front of them, over which they show the puppets." Allegroy of the Cave (1)
I think this paragragh is about the people chained up since their childhood only to live the life already set out for them. They could not venture out in the world to see what else is out there. What is stopping them is a wall and the chains on their legs and neck. An example would be like a mean dog owner; would not let his dog play with other dogs or let him out of the house.

In Status Anxiety by Alain de Bottom, to me I feel he writes about how simple yet confusing creature’s humans can be. We love, want and may think we need certain things, but when we get them we get bored. The state of boredom is mostly seen in the rich. They have the means to get new things everyday if they please, but the poor can also suffer from this. de Bottom states in paragraph 8
“A car Advertisement will, for example, be careful to ignore aspects of human psychology and of the overall process of buying and owning that could spoil, or at least dampen, our joy at coming to possess the featured vehicle. Most notably it will fail to mention out tendency to cease being excited by anything after we have owned for a short while. THE QUICKEST WAY TO STOP NOTICING SOMETHING, MAYBE TO BUY IT-JUST AS THE QUICKEST WAY TO STOP APPRECIATING SOMEONE MAY BE TO MARRY HIM OR HER. We are tempted to believe that certain achievements and possessions will give us enduring satisfaction. We are invited to imagine ourselves scaling the steep cliff of happiness in order to reach a wide, high plateau on which we will live out the rest of our lives; we are not reminded that soon after gaining the summit, we will be called down again into the fresh lowlands of anxiety and desire. “(8)
What I believe is the Thesis, and my favorite sentences in the whole story says to me people are never happy with what they have. One may think they have everything (like the rich), but when the new gadget, car or game comes out then need it. The need these things like if to say they need air, food or shelter. The poor are not any better; they want what the rich have. If the poor were able to acquire the same wealth they would be grateful for what they have, till their greediness consumes them in wanting more.
This boredom can also happen with people. Like the thesis say THE QUICKEST WAY TO STOP NOTICING SOMETHING, MAYBE TO BUY IT-JUST AS THE QUICKEST WAY TO STOP APPRECIATING SOMEONE MAY BE TO MARRY HIM OR HER. I being engaged should disagree with this quote, or at least hate it. I find the quote strangely amusing and truthful. I can hope for the best with my marriage, but no one really knows if it will last. The divorce rate is through the roof, Prof H. said about 60% (if I remembered correctly), but what group has the most divorce? The divorce rate may be mostly the rich, when the feel their 26 year old wife is getting old and needs a newer model. One should not just pick on the rich, yet the poor has divorce as well, but for what reason? I feel half of all divorce has something to do with money.
Not to get off the subject of thesis, everyone does have a tendency to take advantage of the things we have. Once are love one, car, or processions gone one whished one had it back. So I think Alain de Bottom tells us to cherish everything we have, before we lose it.
Wal-Mart is definitley an "American Dream". The product and abuse of "Free Market", "NAFTA", "Tariffs", and "Capitalism". The list of abuse goes way way way longer then that. They put their profit before everything else. Companies in such high positions should be an example and model for the rest to follow. Wal-Mart is not a great example to follow. Every successful company abuses something some type of policy, or morally. But to be at the top and continue to excersise those wrong doings is well - it is just wrong.
Everyone wants everything for a bargain. A bargain comes at a cost. Not a cost to you, or the retailer, but the cost of someones right to live a decent life and earn a decent wage.
Wal-Mart is the only company I am lashing out at. Their is responsibility that follows with power. Go watch some spider man and listen to Uncle Ben. He'll let you know whats up.
Low Wages
Sweatshops
Censorship
Pollution
Liability to public safety
Monopoly
Destruction of private business
Manipulative health coverage
Manipulative employee benefits
The list goes on.
Small town like Findlay Ohio. Wal-Mart buys a huge lot and constructs their building. They open up shop and give them a decade. Everyone in this town will end up working at the 3 biggest retail stores in town. An Electornics Store, A clothing Store, and WAL-MART. All private business gets shut down, and the quality of living drops. They set the standard now in this small town as for wage, and health coverage. When the employees become the shopper and their wage is not even providing enough for them to support their family shopping for those bargains at Wal-Mart turnmoil starts to happen in the community. Wal-Mart sees this and fear the loss of profit and production in this community. Bam they leave and just leave this huge lot vacant. Lights on, Unsecure structure, and a haven for pest and rodent infestation. The town is now left in shambles. Everyone that lived in this small community works at Wal-Mart. Wal-Mart gets shut down and everyone loses their job. Homes get foreclosed, people earn unemployment, and the community is left to recover by it self. While all of this is occuring they get massive tax breaks and waiveers. They get grants from the government for openning these mega stores because they provide jobs for the community.
Why take on such a big responsibility and not make something out of it then just profit.
Monster I understand where you are coming from because I have had the same views instilled upon me by familiy members and friends. But I still stand by what I believe even if I don't make that much money. I just prefer to know that I am not supporting such a big contributor to our countrys downfall in the long run.
Wal-Mart is the same perception as those big finnancial companies and we are the blinded victims. It just has not hit us at home yet. But soon very soon everyone will see the impact if you have not been part of a degrading Wal-Mart dominated community yet.
A solution for finding cheap prices. I go to mom and pops hispanic markets all the time, and Northgate and I'm frekaing asian. Those places have deals just as good as Wal-Mart and they are privately owned. It would be different if I said I shop at Trader Joes and Kohls instead of Wal-Mart. But I do that to. I prefer target over Kohls and home depot over lowes. Diners over Mcdonalds. Portillos over Weinersnitzchel. The local tire shop over Pepboys.
More tips to support local companies. Buy california products, eggs, milk, cheese, meat, chicken, pork, fruits, juices. (Just read the label)
ALTA DENA all the wayy woohoooo and I'm trying to cut back on that swineeee.
By the way. Buying clothes from a 5 for 10 store is just supporting the sweatshops on the same caliber as Wal-Mart. But I prefer an independent to profit off it then them.
Last but not least. I like Nikes, but I hate to know that they are made in Vietnam. Some people are proud for that, but I am not no where close to proud.
We who lived in the Concentration campsremember the men who walk threw the huts confronting others, giving there ast pice of bread. They may be few in number, but they offered sufficient proof that everything can be taken from a manbut one thng: The last of the human freedoms- to choose one's adittude given any set of cicumstance, decides. To choose ones own way.
The thesis of thisis of this pargraph (12, Man's Serch For Meaning) is that eve when you one losses everything. there is one thing no man can lose. that is the fredom of choice. A friend of mine is going threw some what of the same thing. she is geting devorsed and is going threw hell. And i am the only one there to help, while my family is also going threw a devorse.
Ohh and I forgot.
That is how the world is.
The stronger survive and the weak gets eliminated.

I never said I didn't support small business, I admire the struggles they get out of, and yes, Nam, you are right, if more people actually wanted to save money they would shop at 4 or 5 different places rather than only one,
So I think the keyword here is balance,
WE ARE THE ONES THAT KEEP COMPETITION BETWEEN BUSINESS ALIVE.
If we centralize our shopping at a place were just as guilty as buying at Wal Mart
"But I still stand by what I believe even if I don't make that much money." Nam

"A fine remedy for our anxieties over low status in society may be to travel-whether literally or figuratively, by viewing works of art-through the gigantic spaces of the world."
This is a quote from Status Anxiety by Alain de Botton.I believe this is the thesis because it shows a way of forgetting about one's anxieties. To travel the world might make someone realize how different things really are.The world is filled with beautiful art and cities that are so ancient you just feel special being there.I personally forgot about all my probelms at home when I traveled to Europe after high school.A piece of me just wanted to stay in London. The people were so nice and the scenary was something I could not even show in a picture. But you do not have to travel literally to lose one's anxieties.Traveling may be school for some people or going to rehab for others.Moving on to something better besides where one is at is the remedy to all anxieties.

In Mother Tongue, Amy Tan writes," I know this for a fact, because when I was growing up, my mother's "limited" English limited my perception of her. I was ashamed of her English. I beleieved thather English reflected the quality of what she had to say. That is, because she expressed them imperfectly her thoughts were imperfect. And I had plenty of empirical evidence to support me; the fact that people in department stores, at banks, and at restaurants did not take her seriously , did not give her good service, pretended not to understand her, or even acted as if they did not hear her" (8).
I chose this quote because I think that many people share this perception: if one does not know enlish, then he or she is inferior. It is sad to see how some people treat these "limited" enlish speakers. Amy saw people disrespecting her mom so often, it shaped her impression of her mother. She was influenced by all those around her, much like most are today. She began to take others' views as her own. I think that this quote is similar to how people are influenced today. Some people cannot accept other cultures in the US. Amy's mother could not communicate effectively enough in English, so those who understood this took advantage of her. If she could just speak english, her quality of life would have improved. It sounds so easy for those of us who speak it because that is all we have known. I would like have seen those bank tellers that disrepected Amy's mother go to a foreign place where they ineffectively communicated. They would see the difficulties Amy's mother faced just living in a place that neither she understood, nor understood her fully. Empathy in this world is gone. I try to treat everyone respectfully, regardless of status, race, or gender. I really think that a little courtesy goes a long way.

In Man's Search For Meaning by Viktor Frankl he says, "Every day, every hour, offered the opportunity to make a decision, a decision which determined whether you would or would not submit to those powers which threatened to rob you of your very self, your inner freedom… ". These decision, choices, and freedom lead to one thing and that is the power of changing your life to the better or to the worst. Everyone says, "It is because I did not have a choice I had to" but really everyone does have a choice even if they put a gun to your head you have a choice to do what the person with the gun is telling you to do or not. I believe that even in the simplest choice one makes can be a way of either giving up on ones true freedom or fighting for it.

Man's Searh for Meaning
Paragraph #1
And so it is both strange and remarkable to me that-among some dozen of books I have authored-previsely this one, which I had intended to be published anonymously so that it could never build up any reputation on the part of the author, did become a success. Again and again I therefore admonish my students both in Europe and in America: "Don't aim at success-the more you aim at it and make it a target, the more you are going to miss it. For success, like happiness, cannot be pursued;it must ensure, and it only does so as the unintended side-effect of one's personal dedication to a cause greater than oneself or as the by-productof one's surrender to a person other than oneself. Happiness must happen, and the same holds for success: you have to let it happen by not caring about it. I want you to listen to what your conscience commands you to do and go on to carry it out to the best of your knowledge. Then you will live to see that in the long run-in the long run, I say!-success will follow you precisely because you had forgotten to think about it."
Thesis: This paragraph says it all, word for word. If one goes for what one might think is success, then one can miss out on the real meaning of ones success. There is no right or wrong answer for what success is. Everyone has a different opinion on what one can consider success. I think success can be put in different catagories, like success in school, in the house/family, on the job, ect. I know a girl that attended a four year university and got her teachers degree. Ever since she graduated, she works managing a buissness. She realized that she did not want to be a teacher. She is very happy doing what she does. She mostly wuent to school to make her parents happy. On focusing to make her parents happy, she miss a few years and did not realized that becoming a teacher was not her success. Some might think that making the parents happy is a success, I think is just apreciation for all they do for us. Do not look for success, one can not see it or find it. One fells success inside If one is compleatly happy with ones way of living, then one will be successful in live.
I wish success for all the students. I recomend to do what your heart tells you to do. You might disapoint many people, but what really counts is making yourself happy. Many times I do things that are successful in someone elses eyes. It goes againts everything I just posted. I have to take my own advice and stop trying to make everyone happy. If my success is not what others consider to be a success I should be happy with myself and get away from the people that put me down. I am not as young as many of my class mates,(I am 30, going on 31 this January, and not embarrass to say it) but like they say it is never to late to do anything.

Oh my god everyone I am worry about the mid term. I have been studying every change I get. It is going to feel good if I get the chance to go to Santa Ana, Kidz Work, and think about the children insted of worrying about how I did on the test, at least for that day.
I have always had everything I wanted. When I was born up to about when I was seventeen, my dad had his own buissness. I have never been the kind of person to spend money on myself. I will buy anything for other person, no mather how much it coust. I like to help out and donate stuff bacause I have a little girl and a little boy, if something happend and I could not provide for my children, them it would be nice to know there are people out there that will help. All my childrens cloths I have donated to a church in Ensenada, Mexico. It hurts me to see so many children suffering in the streets. I cannot help feel a little anger with the moms and dads that are having theses babies, knowing they can not support them. Big families are nice to have, but only if one is going to be able to support then equally. Giving the same things the oldest one got, and I do not mean hand me downs, means one is capable of the large number of children.
Well it is late and I have to get my little ones to bed, so that I can study some more.
Man's Search For Meaning
Paragraph 4
Strangely enough,a blow which does not even find its mark can, under certain circumstances, hurt more than one that finds its mark. Once I was standing on a railway track in a snowstorm. In spite of the weather our party had to keep on working. I worked quite hard at mending the track with gravel, since that was the only way to keep warm. For only one moment I paused to get my breath and to lean on my shovel. Unfortunately the guard turned around just then and thought I was loafing. Then pain he caused me was not from any insults or any blows. That guard did not think it worth his while to say anything, not even a swear word, to the ragged emaciated figure standing before him, which probably reminded him only vaguely of a human form. Instead, he playfully picked up a stone and threw it at me. That, to me, seemed the way to attract the attention of a beast,to call a domestic animal back to its job,a creature with which you have so little in common that you do not even punish it.
I believe that the thesis of this paragraph is that one can make another human being feel worthless without using their fist or their words. The guard in the paragraph does not feel like wasting his words or, using his strength to punish Frankle for not working. Instead he tosses a stone, carelessly, and playfully to Frank,as if he were animal. The guard doesnt even realize the pain that he has caused. Its funny becuse the saying "sticks and stones may break my bones" is in effect here. Except the stone did not break his body, but his spirit.

For my paragraph I chose number 4 of status Anxiety. In status Anxiety by Alain de Botton states that,"The reason,it turns outare not so mysterious.the very act of earning money frequently calls upon virtues of characters.Workingat and keeping almost any job requires intelligence, energy, forethought, and the ability to cooperate with others. And the more lucrative the position, the greater the requisite merits.Lawers and surgeons not only earn higher salaries than street cleaners;they also bring to bear on their work more sustained effort and greater skill.
This paragraph is descibing that if you want to make alot of money then you are probably going to have to go to school for a long time. Then as you are working and the more you work the more resposibility you are going to have.Such as the surgeon they have to deal with human being live where as a street cleaner odes not have live on the line.Im not saying that they do not work hard but they just have one task. Then the surgeon never know what is going to come at him daily.
I think that the surgeon deserve the money they make.I just feel that the street cleaners is just underated.they are just taken advantge of.When is the last time do you think someone has told them thank you.

Mother Tongue by Amy Tan
Paragraphs 13 & 14
Fortunately, for reasons I won’t get into today. I later decided I should envision a radar for the stories I would write. And the read I decided upon was my mother because these were stories about mothers. So with this reader in mind-and in fact she did read my early drafts-I began to write stories using all the Englishes I grew up with. I wanted to capture what language tests can never reveal about her: intent, passion, imagery, rhythms of speech and nature of thoughts.
Apart from what any critic had to say about my writing, I knew I had succeeded where it counted when my mother finished reading my book and gave me her verdict: “So easy to read.”
I believe Amy felt that she finally found a way to involver her mother into the part of her life that made her an outcast. I believe she did this to give her mother a voice. Through her writing she gave her mother a voice. That voice could be understood by those who spoke fluent English, and those who spoke “broken English.” To many just being able to write a book, or even a movie script would be a great success. Amy created aimed for her own success. Her finished writing was her success. I believe all she really wanted was her mother’s approval. Her mother’s ability to read and understand her writing was her grasp at her success. Amy created writings that now brought her and her mother together.

The paragraph that caught my attention was ¶13 for the story Mans Search For Meaning by Viktor Frankl. Viktor says "And there were always choices to mske. Everyday, every hour, offered the opportunity to make a decision, a decision which determined whether you would not submit to those powers which threaten to rob you of your very self, your inner freedom..." I believe the thesis in this paragraph is that only one can robs ones self from by the choices we make. Life is surrounded by desicions and it is up to one to make the right or best choice. Only one can choose to give up and miss out on the outcome. Like the begining of the semester I mentioned about choosing my teachers and the first choice I picked would have robbed me from the education I would be getting by Mr. Hsiao. Life consists of choices and it is up to one to choose their future.

This entire allegory, I said, you may now append, dear Glaucon, to the previous argument; the prison-house is the world of sight, the light of the fire is the sun, and you will not misapprehend me if you interpret the journey upwards to be the ascent of the soul into the intellectual world according to my poor belief, wich at your desire. I have expressed whether rightly or wrongly god knows.
I believe this is the thesis for paragraph thirty six, In it platos explains how the human life acts following one path always, either in the past or in the future, civilized or uncivilized we follow this marked path. When he says the light of the fire is the sun, into the intellectual world. It means some one is looking at the sun. Which could be translated into he is looking at him self thinking of all the good and great things around him.

Allegory the Cave Paragraph 15
And now look again, and see what will naturally follow if the prisoners are released and disabused of their error. At first, when any of them is liberated and compelled suddenly to stand up and turn his neck round and walk and look towards the light, he will suffer pains; the glare will distress him, and he will be unable to see the realities of which in his former state he had seen the shadows; and then conceive some one saying to him, that what he saw before was an illusion, but now, when he is approaching nearer to being and his eye is turned towards more real existence, he has a clearer vision, -what will be his reply? And you may further imagine that his instructor is pointing to the objects as they pass and requiring him to name them, -- will he not be perplexed? will he not fancy that the shadows which he formerly saw are truer than the objects which are now shown to him?
When he saw the light of the sun or the light from God, he was not actually saw the light of the sun. The best way to describe it, is that he was actually saw himself, not the man who was totally lost in his cave, who thought that the cave was his "real world". He accepted the truth and came out from his "real world". Now, his eyes are all wide open and finally feel the pain from accepting the truth. In the end, he in some way could be the best person he could possibly be after seeing the real world.

And there were always choices to make. Every day, every hour, offered the opportunity to make a decision, a decision which determined whether you would or would not submit to those powers which threatened to rob you of your very self, your inner freedom; which determined whether or not you would become the plaything of circumstance, renouncing freedom and dignity to become molded into the form of the typical inmate.
Every day one faces a myriad of decisions that can shape and mold what one becomes. Even indecision is a decision that can change one's life. Everything one does or does not do alters ones course in life. The question is not merely "to be or not to be" but what shall one become. In life there is no such thing as stasis, one is always moving in a direction, whether forward or backward. The question then becomes: which way are you moving? This is why one must always set goals and attempt to be moving toward them.

In _Status Anxiety_ by Allain de Botton, it states, "In sum, we may best overcome a feeling of unimportance not by making ourselves more important but by recognizing the relative lack of importance of everyone on earth. Our concern with who is a few millimeters taller than us may thus give way to an awe for things a thousand million times larger than any human being, a force that we may be moved to call infinity, eternity-or simply, and perhaps most usefully, God." (19)
I belive that this quote sums up what _Status Anxiety_ is really about. While we are on earth, what is it we are all truely working towards? To have that high paying career and flashy car? What is that going to make of you after this life?
Also, it is so true when Botton says, "we may best overcome a feeling of unimportance not by making ourselves more important but by recognizing the relative lack of importance of everyone on earth." (19)
Why is it we feel the need to put others down to make ourselves feel better? When in reality, we are putting ourselves below them.

paragraph 2
"recently, i was made keenly aware of the different enlishes i do use. i was giving a talk to a large group of people, the same talk i had already given to a dozen other groups. the nature of the talk was about writing, my life, and my book The Joy Luck Club. the talk was going along well enough, until i remembered one major difference that made the whole talk sound wrong. my mother was in the room. and it was perhaps the first time she had heard me give a lengthy speech, using the kind of english i have never used with.i was saying thins like, "the intersection of memory upon imagination" and "there is an aspect of my fiction that relates to thus-and-thus"- a seech filled with carefully wrought grammatical phrases, burdened, it seemed to me, with nominalized forms, past perfect tenses, conditional phrases, all the forms of standard enlish that i had learned in school and through books, the forms of english i did not use at home with my mother"
i chose this paragraph because it explains what the entire story is about.
my thesis is that when she had remembered her mother being there, she felt as if she was being two-faced her whole life. she felt emberessed of her culture. at the same time her mother was emberessed because she was not asian enough.

Only Daughter by Sandra Cisneros
Paragraph 4:
Being only a daughter for my father meant that my destiny would lead me to become someone's wife. That's what he believed. But when i was in the 5th grade and shared my plans for college with him. i was sure he understood. I remember my father saying, "Que bueno, mija, that's good." That meant a lot to me, especially since my brothers thought the idea hilarious. What I didn't realize was that my father thought college was good for girls-good for finding a husband. After 4 years in college and 2 more in graduate school, and still no husband, my father shakes his head even now and says I wasted all that education.
Thesis: What this paragraph is saying is basically that Sandra's dad never believed that it was a good idea for her to go to College. He believed that it was best for her to just get married and be a housewife. Sandra's dad always believed she was not as good as her brothers, for the reason that she was not a male. He never thought she was going to become a great writer one day.

What the writer is trying to convey, is that we should stop concerning ourselves with unimportant things, and concentrate on the larger more important things in life. In the content of the paper, he drives the point that we as a society place a lot of importance on material possessions. The type of car we drive, the clothes we wear, the size of our house, all are things that illustrate how much money one has. A Honda works as well as a Mercedes, yet people with money opt for the pricier more prestigious Mercedes. It is their way of demonstrating to others that they are successful. A billboard of sorts, the Mercedes advertises how important they have become. It is a tangible demonstration that through hard work, they have achieved something that the majority of the public has not.
Much in the same way that a car says “look at what I can afford”, the clothes that one wears makes a statement of how important they are. In business, a man is expected to wear a suit. However, the more expensive the suit, the more successful that man is perceived to be. I guess that the meaning behind it is that anyone can afford a suit, but not everyone can afford a Tom Ford suit. It does not mean that the person wearing an off the rack suit is less capable of closing a deal. Nevertheless, society associates a nice, tailored, expensive suit with success. This is something that has become widely accepted. For example, if a Real Estate agent is showing homes in an old wrinkled suit, people will consider him less successful and subsequently will not give him a deal. Judging someone at a superficial level is not only unfair, but also immoral.
Additionally, people buy homes much too big for their needs. How could a family of four ever need a mansion with seven bedrooms and six bathrooms? They purchase homes with rooms that they do not need. Having more space, they now need things to fill these rooms. Usually, these spare rooms are furnished with a price tag of tens of thousands of dollars. Money that could help a hungry family eat, or buy a car for father who takes the bus to work. I think that these ultra wealthy people purchase larger than needed homes as a display of how much money they have.
This is something that has been widely accepted by society. The decadent spending which goes on is not only prevalent with the wealthy, but also in some of the poorest neighborhoods. For example, when Michael Jordan came out with shoes, they were the most expensive tennis shoes out. The number one buyer of these shoes were not the wealthy, they were the urban kid who lived in the ghetto. Kids in poor neighborhoods were spending an insane amount of money to show others that they had the hottest shoes. Knowing that it’s not only the rich that try to show off their possessions, the poor do it as well, we could be part of the solution. If we begin to ask ourselves why we are making a purchase, we might be able to begin to change society’s way of thinking.

In paragraph 19 of Allegory of the Cave it states "And suppose once more, that he is relunctantly dargged up a steep and rugged ascent, and held fast until he's forced into the presence of the sun himself, is he not likely to be pained and irritated? When he approaches the light his eyes will be dazzled, and he will not be able to see anything at all of what are now called realities."
The thesis of this paragraph is once one is showed the truth it can be hard for him to accept. The paragraph is about a person dicovering the truth. A lot of times when someone discovers the truth of what he's believed for all his life it's hard and painful for him to accept. When it says " When he approaches the light his eyes will be dazzled, and he will not be able to see anything at all of what are now called realities." It's saying, when someone finds out the truth, he usually is surprised and in denial about whatever he finds out. For instance, when a girl thinks her boyfriend is cheating. When someone tells her he saw him with another girl, she may be so surprised at first she's in denial. She may not even believe it and it may be very painful for her because it goes agaisnt what she has believed and what she wants to believe about her boyfriend.

I chose paragraph eight in Alain de Botton's Status Anxiety.
A car advertisement will, for example, be careful to ignore aspects of human psychology and of the overall process of buying and owning that could spoil, or at least dampen, our joy at coming to possess the featured vehicle. Most notably, it will fail to mention our tendency to cease being excited by anything after we have owned for a short while. The quickest way to stop noticing something, may be to buy it--just as the quickest way to stop appreciating someone may be to marry him or her. We are tempted to believe that certain achievements and possessions will give us enduring satisfaction. We are invited to imagine ourselves scaling the steep cliff of happiness in order to reach a wide, high plateau on which we will live out the rest of our lives; we are not reminded that soon after gaining the summit, we will be called down again into fresh lowlands of anxiety and desire.
This paragraph talks about two aspects of happiness in ones life. The first is instant gratification. Where the process is taken out to reach the goal, and then at the goal happiness it attained. The second talks about the process and how horrible the outcome may be. I believe the second is closer to the truth. Happiness is not about the feeling when one reaches the goal. It is about the feeling of what one did to reach the goal, and how much greater that made one feel once the goal was made. Attaining the goal does creat a good feeling, but it becomes greater depending on how the goal was reached. For example, if someone put an hour a day for a week in and reached their goal, they would feel alright. The person that put two or three hours in a day for a few months would feel much greater. They would have a feeling of greater accomplishment. Once the goal has been reached we are knocked back down to continue on another journey. We have the choice whether to enjoy the process, or just bash our way through. The happiness is determined by the hard work put in.

The thesis of this short paragraph is clearly in bold. We believe that having or owning the a certain status symbol will make us happy. When in fact it is only temporary. i completely agree and disagree with him when he states that the quickest way to unappreciate someone is to marry them. That is such a controversy. We see many couples that were so in love at there courtship time. once they have lived together and tied the knot, it seems like they dont even care about each other. thats when divorce comes in. at the same time i disagree completely because you get to appreciate a person in time if one accepts each other for who they are. Botton finishes it up saying that once we have reachced our goal or acchievement and we feel like we have accomplished all, reality creeps up in time. He states that its not a lifetime satisfaction. I understand we will never be satisfied and settle on one thing for a lifetime.

We who lived in concentration camps can remember the men who walked through the huts comforting others, giving away their last piece of bread. They may have been few in number, but they offersufficient proof that everything can be taken from a man but one thing:the last of the human freedoms to choose ones attitude in any given set of circumstance to choose ones own way.
The thesis for this paragraph is thaat even though every possible little thing had been taken away from the people in the concentration camps the people still decided on there own attitudes. They didnt want to let it get to take the best of them so they chose to have a have a good or bad attitudes.

In status anxiety(that would be underlined but i don't know how to do it on here) Alain De Button says, "Life seems to be a process of replacing one anxiety with another and supstituting one desire for another--which not to say we should never strive to overcome any of our anxieties or fullfill any of our desires but rather to sugggest that we should perhaps build into our striving an awareness of the way our goals promise us a respite and a resolution that they cannot, by definition, deliver. The new car will rapidly be absorbed, like all the other wonders we already own, into the material backdrop of our lives, where we will hardly register its existence--until the night when a burglar does us the paradoxial service of smashing a window to steal the radio and brings home to us, in the midst of the shattered glass, how much we had to be grateful for"(9).
I think the main message here is that people are never happy with what they have. People never realize how much something means to them until it is gone. Someone can have a loved one that they take for granted and not even realize how much they really loved them until they walk out the front door or even worse die. People need to realize that what they have right now is good enough. they need to stop trying to get the next best thing and notice that what they have in front of them is pretty amazing. Someone can say to themselves, "I just need to get this new purse and my life will be complete," but will it really? Or will it just be complete until a new purse comes out that that person must have? People need to stop trying to live their life for what they must have and live it for what they do have.

Good job with the consistent posts! I am proud we are not getting too side tracked with the topics in this blogosphere. I thought I would be reading more about the election. No?
I try not to push my political views on others because everyone should be able establish their own opinions. That can be done by educating yourself with the current events that are going to be affecting our future. Yes we can all be blasé about voting, because our generation does it so well. Haha. Numbers do show only a small percentage of the youth do actually vote compared to the other demographics. Because of the small percentage of young voters, of course we the youth are not going to be a big force when a politician drafts their presidential campaign. So if we want to see change we all have to contribute. If you do not, please do not complain about government decisions you do not like. You have no right to if you did not exercise your vote. Vote because you can, you never know you might wake up one day and CANNOT. Haha jk….not really.

In this paragraph you can tell where Tan got her inspirations to be come a great best seller. How a negative generalization on her abilities inspired her to do something unconventional. This was getting an English degree. Breaking these implications that were made about Tan was the main force of her discovering her passion.
Of course we would like to break all negative stereotypes we have about one another. Majority of the time we do not like to be put in the same category like everyone else. It is how you take the generalization and change it into something positive. Her thesis is mainly about being unconventional while searching for her passion. You should not let stereotypes and negative generalizations hold you back from your dreams. No matter how big or far fetched they might be. Let it be your motivation break those walls of generalizations.

Allegory of the Cave
(15)And now look again, and see what will naturally follow if the prisoners are released and disabused of their error, At first, when any of them is liberated and compelled suddenly to stand up and turn his neck round and walk and look towards the light, he will suffer sharp pains; the glare will distress him, and he will be unable to see the realities of which in his former state he had seen the shadows; and then conceive some one saying to him, that what he saw before was an illusion, but that now, when he is approaching nearer to being and his eye is turned towards more real existence, he has a clearer vision, -what will be his reply? And you may further imagine that his instructor is pointing to the objects as they pass and requiring him to name them, -- will he not be perplexed? WILL HE NOT FANCY THE SHADOWS WHICH HE FORMERLY SAW ARE TRUER THAN THE OBJECTS WHICH ARE NOW SHOWN TO HIM?
Strangely enough i believe the thesis is the last sentence of this paragraph. it is true, that when moved from our zones of comfort, we prefer to return to where we know the cadence and order of things. Plato was touching on humanity's reluctance (or inability) to relinquish truths, which at a later date, are proved to be a lie. So as not to beat the dead horse of drugs/alcohol cave ill choose another example. Political affiliation can be a cave. It can be said and agreed upon, that no matter what happens some people will never change their party. This is true of red team and blue team. And if we're honest enough, we'll admit that we just dont like the idea of rooting for the other side. Instead of following the truth, we subscribe to a close-minded cave. I will end with a quote: "believing the wrong thing, for a long time, gives it the impression of being true." -forgot.

In a story about the holocaust, Man’s Search for Meaning by Victor E, Frankl he writes,"They may have been few in number, but they offer sufficient proof that everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of human freedoms-to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way”(12). Out of all the worldly possessions the most important is free and could never be taken. A persons will to choose. From the moment one is born he or she is given free will. What one decides to choose determines what kind of person they eventually tern out to be.In my life I chosen many different paths to walk. Some good and some not, but the the main thing is that I have chosen to walk down each path with my head held high.

Status Anxiety Paragraph 7:
"A car advertisement will for example, be careful to ignore aspects of human psychology an d of the overall process of buying and owning that could spoil, or at least dampen, our joy at coming to posses the featured vehicle. Most notably, it will fail to mention our tendency to cease being excited by anything after we have owned it for awhile. The quickest way to stop noticing something, may not be to buy it-just as the quickest way to stop appreciating someone may to be marry him or her. We are tempted to believe that certain achievements and possessions will give us enduring satisfaction. We are invited to imagine ourselves scaling the steep cliff of happiness in order to reach a wide, high plateau on which we will live out the rest of our lives; we are not reminded that soon after gaining the summit, we will be called down again into the fresh lowlands of anxiety and desire."
Thesis
Alain de Botton is in reality saying the truth about the rich and poor. When you want something, you go out and get it. Once you have it you forget about it and never acknowledge it. As humans we tend to forget about what we have in front of us. We always want something bigger and better. It's like buying a new game. This new game just came out and its the hottest thing to get. Once the new edition comes out your liable to forget about the one you have. Its the same game just new features. The same thing can happen in relationships which is really sad. We tend to forget about things and stop appreciating what we have. He is always saying that certain prize possessions will give us happiness and bring us joy. Thats truth itself. We are all guilty of doing just that. I think he proves a big point about how humans feel towards something that is of value to us. This paragraph just summarizes how we can appreciate something on moment, and the next moment forget about it.

“Being only a daughter for my father meant that my destiny would lead me to become someone’s wife. That’s what he believed. But when I was in the fifth grade and shared my plans for college with him, I was sure he understood. I remember my father saying, “Que bueno, mi’ja, that’s good.” That meant a lot to me, especially since my brothers thought the idea hilarious. What I didn’t realize was that my father thought college was good for girls- good for finding a husband. After four years in college and two more in graduate school, and still no husband, my father shakes his head even now and says I wasted all that education.” (Cisneros, 4).
Thesis
The thesis of paragraph four in Only Daughter, by Sandra Cisneros, is clearly when she says, “What I didn’t realize was that my father thought college was good for girls- good for finding a husband.” Basically what she is saying is that her father thought the idea of her attending six years in college were just a waste of time for her because she did not find a husband. Yet be did not realize that she accomplished something she loved, to become a writer. He, at that point did not realize that she did this just for him to realize that she was his daughter, his only daughter.

In mans search for meaning by Viktor E. Frankl he says while in a concentration camp," i did not know whether my life was alive, and i had no means of finding out(during all my prison life there was no outgoing or incoming mail): but at that moment it ceased to matter. There was no need for me to know;nothing could touch the strength of my love, my thoughts, and the imige of my beloved. Had I known then that my wife was dead, I think that I would still have given myself, undisturbed by that knowledge, to the contemplation of her image, and that my mental conversation with her would have been been just as vivid and just as satisfying." Set me like a seal upon they heart, love is as strong as death." (paragraph 9)
I believe that the thesis of this paragraph is to show that love is the meaning of life. The love that he had for his wife was so great that to him it was stronger than death. It was a force so strong that it impulsed him to keep going through so much misery. The mere image of his beloved was enough to keep figthing to see her once again although it is ironic that his wife had died by this time. This leaves us a lesson we should never waste time, life is to short to waste, we should give ourselves the opportunity to love.

Ever since he recovered from a stroke two years ago, my father likes to spend his leisure time horizontally. And that's how I found him watching a Pedro Infant movie on Television and eating rice pudding."
The main emotion about this paragraph is love. She has a sympathy because her father became weaker than the past. He likes to spend his leisure time horizontally, and she wanted to show her writing to her father. I thing it is the thing what exists between family member.

"Status Anxiety"
Paragraph 2
A successful person may be a man or women, of any race, who has been able to accumulate money, power, and renown through his or her accomplishments (rather than through inheritance) in one of the myriad sectors of the commercial world (including sport, art, and scientific research). Because societies are in practice trusted to be "meritocratic," financial achievements are necessarily understood to be "deserved." The ability to accumulate wealth is prized as proof of at least four cardinal virtues: creativity, courage, intelligence, and stamina. The presence or absence of other virtues-humility or godliness, for example-rarely detains attention. That success is no longer attributed, as in past societies to “luck,” “providence,” or “GOD” is a reflection of the collective secular faith we now place in individual will power. Financial failures are judged to be similarly merited, with unemployment’s bearing some of the shame. Money is meanwhile invested with an ethical quality. Its relative quantity indicates the virtue of its possessor, as do material goods it can buy. A prosperous way of life signals worthiness, while ownership of a rusted old car or a threadbare home may prompt suppositions of moral deficiency. Aside from its promise of high status, wealth is promoted on the basis of its capacity to deliver happiness by gaining access to an array of ever changing conveniences and luxuries.
THESIS:
I find the thesis of this paragraph to be that money does not make a person worthy. Although the perceived message is that money makes you worthy I find it to be a sarcastic tone in this passage. Botton states “The presence or absence of other virtues-humility and godliness, for example- rarely detains attention,” which is stating that a person can be devoid of morals and character and still succeed. He is also saying that a person should not be judged by what they own. A person should be judged by the merit of their character not by what material items they happen to own. People are much more than what they possess and achive. Success is defined diferently by many people. Many people see wealth as the love a a family and not just monetary. This reminds me of a quote from a song called "Something I Would Do" by SPM "Money ain't happiness y'all some fools, your babys brown eyes are your diamonds and jewels." The ideal being conveyed in this passage is that all men/women are equals and should remain treated as such until they open their mouths and let their true character spill out. One can also conclude that the author believes that people should put more faith in a religion instead of the dollar. It can be said that this passage reflects the entire writing, which is that one cannot survive the test of time solely based on ones wealth. In order to be remembered throughout time one must be an exceptionable person and lead a righteous life. In the lamest terms, love thy family, live a life clean, and remain honorable.
"UPDATE"
TO ALL THOSE WHO ARE CARE MY HOMIE IS DOING ALOT BETTER, HE IS NOW BREATHING ON HIS OWN AND IS AWAKE. THE DOCTORS SAY THAT HE IS GOING TO BE PERFECTLY FINE, EXCEPT FOR A POSSIBLE PERMANET LIMP. BUT WHO CARES ABOUT A LIMP, HES GONNA MAKE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THANKS TO EVERYONE THAT SHOWED LOVE AND SUPPORT.
And so it is both strange and remarkable to me that--among some dozen of books I have authored--precisely this one, which I had intended to be published anonymously so that it could never build up any reputation on the part of the author, did become a success. Again and again I therefore admonish my students both in Europe and in America: "Don't aim for success--the more you aim at it and make it a target, the more you are going to miss it. For success, like happiness, cannot be pursued; it must ensue, and it only does so as the unintended side-effect of one's personaly dedication to a cause greater than oneself or as the by-product of one's surrender to a person other than oneself. Happiness must happen, and the same holds for success: you have to let it happen by not caring about it. I want you to listen to what your conscience commands you to do and go on to carry it out to the best of your knowedge. Then you will live to see that in the long run--in the long, I say!--success will follow you precisely because you had forgotten to think about it" (Frankl paragraph 1).
To me, the thesis of this paragraph is to not hunt down success. You have to let it follow you. The only way to succeed and be happy is to live yourlife to the best of your ability. If you do something you love, you will ultimatly succeed in the end. If you love it, you will be good at it.

"Mother Tongue" by Amy Tan; paragraph 5
I know this for a fact, because when I was growing up, my mother's "limited" English limited MY perception of her. I was ashamed of her English. I believed the her English reflected the quality of what she had to say. That is, because she expressed them imperfectly, her thoughts were imperfect. And I had plenty of empirical evidence to support me: the fact that people in department stores, at banks, and at restaurants did not take her seriously, did not give her good service, pretended not to understand her, or even acted as if they did not hear her.
Thesis: In this paragraph from "Mother Tongue", Amy Tan talks about her mother's "broken" English and how other people look down on her mother as if she were worth less in society. If one speaks in "broken" or "limited" English, they are seen as somewhat uneducated and dumb. This is true for not only the English language but also any other language that a non-native speaker is trying to communicate with. I believe that if one human being cannot fully communicate with another person the way they know how, it is seen as the other person's fault for not knowing how to communicate a different way. Therefore, they are seen as stupid and unable to understand a lot of things. This is why some people treat them like they are below the rest of society. Using my personal experience as an example, I can say that I have felt mistreated because of my "broken" Spanish. I understand Spanish and I can speak it but it is very hard for me to say things the correct way. I have an especially hard time saying "perro", or dog, because i cannot roll my r's. Whenever I try to communicate with a spanish-speaker, they usually laugh at me or say "never mind" when I try harder. It sometimes feels like they are judging me as a person based on my language skills. I think it is just best to remember that what people say and think are too different things. And ALWAYS be open-minded.

I chose Only Daughter by Sandra Cisneros, Paragraph 10: "When my oldest brother graduated from medical school, he fulfilled my father's dream that we study hard and use this-our heads, instead of this-our hands. Even now my father's hands are thick and yellow, stubbed by a history of hammer and nails and twine and coils and springs. "use this," my father said, tapping his head, "and not this," showing us those hands. He always looked tired when he said it."
Thesis: Their dad did not want them to live their lives working like he has. He mostly showed that he wanted the best for his sons but Sandra was included in it too. Her dad wanted her to go to college and use her head but to find a husband that would work hard and she wont have to work. For Sandra using her head was going to college and becoming successful and making her dad proud. The whole main idea of this paragraph was the advice thier dad gave them, use their head not their hands.

MIDTERM REVIEW
"Life seems to be a process of replacing one anxiety with another and substituting one desire for another which is not to say we should never stirve to overcome any of our anxieties or fulfill any of our desires but rather suggest that we should perhaps build into our strivings an awareness of the way our goals promise us a respite and a resolution that they cannot, by definition, deliver. The new car will rapidly be absorbed, like all the othere wonders we already own, into the material backdrop of our lives, where we will hardly register its existence--until the night when a burglar does us the paradoxical service of smashing a window to steal the radio and brings us home to us, in the midst of the shattered glass, how much we had to grateful for" (9).
Alain de Botton states this in his philosophical work, Status Anxiety.
My interpretation of the thesis in this paragraph is that we humans are always wanting more yet we are taking things for granted. Furthermore, we do not realize what we have until it is gone. He gave a clear example of the car and I liked how he makes us think with his work. I think that taking things for granted is wrong because in the end we are only hurting ourselves. We do not realize what we truly had until we lose it. It hurts us when we lose that object because it cost our own earned money. If it was me with the car, for example, I would be totally excited and just thrilled to have a car. After some time though as Button claims, "the new car will rapidly be absorbed like all the other wonders we already own, into the material backdrop of out lives..."(9)
We as humans need to focus on what we have and be thankful for it. Materialism is not everything, we should also be thankful for the people that surrounds us as well. We should be aware of the desires and anxieties that we have. We should replace them but in a timely manner and not in a selfish way. We should see how hard we work to get to somewhere and appreciate that outcome. Objects really have no true existence to us until something terrible happens and its gone. This idea, true as it is unfortunately can also be applied to the people who surround us.

"And now look again, and see what will naturally follow if the prisoners are released and disabused of their error. At first, when any of them is liberated and compelled suddenly to stand up and trn his neck round and walk and look towards the light, he will suffer sharp pains; The glare will distress him, and he will be unable to see the realities of which in his former state he had see the shadows; and then conceive someone saying to him, that what he saw before was an illusion, but that now, when he is approaching nearer to being and his eye is turned towards more real existance, he has a clearer vision, what will be his reply? and you may further imagine that his instructor is pointing to the objects as they pass and requiring him to name them, will he not be perplexed? Will he not fancy that the shadows which he formaly saw are truer then the objects which are now shown to him?"(The Allegory par.15)
One may ask themselfs "what is the point to this"? well what socrates was talking about was that to find the truth and better ones self, one has to escape ones bindings and face the light. Even after one may escape the life that one formaly knew as ones reality, the struggle realy begins after one escapes ones chains. Only after one accepts that what one formaly knew was to be but a mere fake existance, one can finaly begin the ascension into ones truest form. Socrates knows that the struggle may be difficult and painful but the reward for succeding in the struggle is infinite and beautiful.

Viktor E. Frankl states, And there were Always choices to make. Every day, every hour, offered the opportunity to make a decision, a decision which determined whether you would or would notsubmit to those powers which threatened to rob you of your very self, your inner freedom; which determined whether or not you would become the plaything of circumstances, renouncing freedom and dignity to become molded into the form of the typical inmate.(13)
The thesis of this paragraph is stating that there is always a choice, that an individual should never misplace their beliefs. The ones that hold true to their principle, under any circumstances or consequences, determines the strong from the weak."[...] renouncing freedom and dignity to become molded into the form of the typical inmate." The person who does not submit to "those powers" are the strong, who still have hope and their dignity. The weak are the "typical inmate". They are the one's who have lost their inner freedom and self, they are the one's who has lost their souls.

Mother Tongue paragraph 13 amnd 14
"Fortunately, for reasons I wont get into today, I later decided I should envision a reader for the stories I would write. And the I reader I decided upon was my mother because these were stories about mothers. So with this reader in mind-and in fact she did read my early drafts-I began to write stories using all the Englishes I grew up with. I wanted to capture what language tests can never reveal bout her: intent, passion, imagery, rhythms of speech and nature of thoughts.
Apart from what any critic had to say about my writing, I knew I had succeeded where it counted when my mother finished reading my book and gave me her verdict: 'So easy to read.'
These last two paragraphs in Mother Tongue show that Amy Tan has a strong love for her mother. She chose to write stories so that her mother could could understand it. Out of all the different types of people that may read her books, she decided to write her books so that foreigners who do not speak English well are able to understand and relate to her stories. In the end, Amy Tan does not really care what anyone else says about her reading besides her mother. All her life, she felt embarassed that her mother could only speak "broken English." She didnt like the way people looked down on her mother, and thought that she was a low achiever, since she could not speak English well. The last two paragraphs show how she was searching for her identity in a society her family could not fully relate too. For example, People always feel out of place and embarrassed when they go somewhere, and the person they are with speaks broken English. By the end of the story, Amy Tan realized that she does not need to feel embarrassed when her mother speaks broken English. She loves her mom and husband, and that is all that matters. She feels more comfortable using broken English than her fancy English that she was taught in school.

Midterm Review
Life seems to be a process of replacing one anxiety with another and substituting one desire for another-which is not to say we should never strive to overcome any of our anxieties or fulfill any of our desires but rather to suggest that we should perhaps build into our strivings an awareness of the way our goals promise us a respite and a resolution that they cannot, by definition, deliver. The new car will rapidly be absorbed, like all the other wonders we already own, into the material backdrop of our lives, where we will hardly register its existence-until the night when a burglar does us the paradoxical service of smashing a window to steal the radio and brings home to us, in the midst of the shattered glass, how much we had to grateful for.
The thesis of this paragraph is how the material objects that you once desired so much at one point will soon be forgotten like all the other material objects one used to desire so much at one point and not notice it and how much it meant to you until something dreadful happens to it. So basically its like an old saying where some of the things in life we take for granted, until its gone then realize we even had it. Try not to take things you have for granted. Be thankful for what you already do have. Instead of bickering for what you don't have.

Mans Search for Meaning
paragraph 1
" And so it is both strange and remarkable to me that-among some dozen of books i have authored-precisely this one, which i had intended to be published anonymously so that it could never build up any reputationon the part of the author, did become a success. Again and again i therefore admonish my students both in Europe and America: "Don't aim at sucess-the more you aim at it and make it a target, the more you are going to miss it. For success like happiness, cannot be pursued; it must be ensued, and it only does so as the unintended side-effect of one's personal dedication to a cause greaterthan oneself or as the by-product of ones surrender to a person other than oneself.Happiness must happen, and the same holds for sucess: you have to let it happen by not caring about it. I want you to listen to what your conscience commands you to do and go on to carryit out to the best of your knowledge. Then you will live to see that in the long run-in th long run, i say!-sucess will follow you precisely because you had forgotten to think about it".
THESIS:
One should not consume themselves with wishes of sucess. you should not do what you think will bring you sucess. This will only bring more unhappiness and failure. Instead, you should do what you love not concerned with whether it will bring sucess or not. Those are the happiest and most sucessful people, those who do what they love ( Jay Z, Bill Gates,Kobe Bryant, Mr H. :D)When you dedicate your life to something you love it will bring the ultimate success and happiness that will last a lifetime because one is doing what they love to do. It is the same with love....you do not marry someone who will fill your life with riches, those that do are miserable. One marries somebody they love and you dedicate yourself to that person and they are what brings you happiness because they are who you want to be with. This is what Frankl is trying to teach, do not occupy your thoughts with ways to become successful. Instead live your life to the fullest, enjoy every minute, do what you love and be with who you love because life is too short not too.It is easy to get caught up in the world of wealth and riches. " the advertisment stays quiet too, about the relative inability of any material thing to alter our level of happiness, as compared with the overwhelming power of emotional events. The most elegant and accomplished of vehicles cannot give us a fraction of the satisfaction we derive from a good relationship, just as it cannot be of any comfort whatsoever to us following a domestic argument or abadonment" quotes Alain De Bottom in Status Anxiety (paragraph 9). A life consumed with the pursue of sucess will only cause us to miss it and bring unhappiness. Live your life doing things that you love, lead a life as good as one can, in a difficult situation do what one thinks is right and success and happiness will come and find you. Do not chase it, have ambition, but do not run yourself tired chasing it.....let it come to you, then you know it is there to stay.

(Socrates) and now, i said, let me show in a figure how far our nature is enlightened or unenlightened:- Behold! human beings living in a undergroumd den, which has a mouth open towards the light and reaching all along the den; here they have been from their childhood, and have their legs and necks chained so that they cannot move, and can only see beofore them, being prevented by the chains from turning round their heads . above and behind them a fire is blazing at a distance, and between the fire and the prisoners there is a raised way; and you will see , if you look, a low wall built along the way, like the screen which marionette players have in front of them, over which they show the puppets.
Thesis:
the thesis is that people are trap in a "cave" that they will not question nothing else but what they know. the people will only be in their own little world, and will not come out of their world. they will stay in their comfort zone. for example like me, im not really comfortable blogging. so i stay in my world which is that i do not like to put myself out there. i do not like people knowing my life. so i close my cave and i don't let no one come by. so society they are being brainwash, by authority

Only Daughter
"I was/am the only daughter and only a daughter. Being an only daughter in a family of six sons forced me by circumstance to spend a lot of time by myself becuase my brothers felt it beneath them to play qith a girl in public. Not that aloneness, that loneliness, was good for a would-be writer--it allowed me time to think and think, to imagine, to read and prepare myself."(3)
I think the first sentence from the paragraph is the thesis. Sandra Cisneros has come to terms with herself and finally accepted that she is the only daughter. Since her brothers felt embarassed and immasculated playing with a girl in public, it forced her to become isolated. Instead of wallowing in her own self-pity, she made good use of her free time by reading, writing and learning a lot about her herself. This type of solitude only expanded her mind, making her more imaginative and creative, and certainly preparing her to become the exceptional writer she is today.

In “Status Anxiety” Alain de Botton states, “The reasons, it turns out, are not mysterious. The very act of earning money frequently calls upon virtues of character. Working at-and keeping-almost any job requires intelligence, energy, forethought, and the ability to cooperate with others. And the more lucrative the position, the greater the requisite merits. Lawyers and surgeons not only earn higher salaries than street cleaners; they also basically bring to bear on their work more sustained effort and great skill.” (4)
This paragraph sends a message that in order to make it big, one has to apply everything one has to offer toward their desired career. One can get by on a regular entry level position because they usually do not take much skill or schooling to maintain. If one wants to be financially wealthy and live a life a luxury, effort and determination must be utilized. This statement implies that we are not to sit and shake our heads at those who are making it big in corporate America. The opportunities to join in on the reindeer games are out there for us to play. We cannot afford to sit around and wait to be invited, we need to offer our capabilities and strive to make a contribution.

In “Mother Tongue, by Amy Tan, she writes in paragraph number two, “Recently, I was made keenly aware of the different Englishes I do use. I was giving a talk to a large group of people, the same talk I had already given to half a dozen other groups. The nature of the talk was about my writing, my life, and my book The Joy Luck Club. The talk was going along well enough, until I remembered one major difference that made the whole talk sound wrong. My mother was in the room. And it was perhaps the first time she had heard me give a lengthy speech, using the kind of English I have never used with her. I was saying things like, “The intersection of memory upon imagination” and “There is an aspect of my fiction that relates to thus-and-thus” –a speech filled with carefully wrought grammatical phrases, burdened, it seemed to me, with nominalized forms, past perfect tenses, conditional phrases, all the forms of standard English that I had learned in school and through books, the forms of English I did not use at home with my mother. (2)
The thesis in this paragraph is, Amy Tan never was aware of the different englishes she uses. It was until her mother was sitting down in the room that she became aware. Amy was speaking her Standard English. The English she learned in school. To Amy it sounded so wrong because she never used that English with her mother. I can strongly relate to that because I also speak different English. When I’m at work my Standard English, with friends some slang with Standard English, and with my mother I speak my Spanglish. I speak spanglish with my mother because that is what she understands. Amy Tan was ashamed of her mothers English but at the end she realized that she would write about all the Englishes she grew up with.

alright. WOW.
thats all i can say. ever since class ended yesterday everything has seemed to be in a whirlwind.
(mr. h im gonna talk about my last paper), but i found out some devastating news yesterday right as i was walking out of class. i wrote this on one of those facebook notes right after i found out the news, i dont really feel like explaining it again so i copied and pasted the facebook post...
right now im in... im in.. i dont even have a word for it. i guess you can say im in a state of blank. i dont know how things could have possibly changed this quickly. not for me. no. for my cousin.
let me take it back a few 4 or 5 months ago. my cousin is sick. minor cold, no big. he starts to have back pains, no big again. goes and checks with a back specialist. the specialist cant figure it out. the pain is horrible, he cant walk, he cant do anything. gets checked into the hospital.
alright now let me take it back waaaaay long ago. im an only child. my cousin is an only child. we were always together as kids, especially during the holidays. thats just the way my family is... very close to each other. i looked up to him, i wouldnt say as a brother figure because we werent with each other all the time. but i still admired him as an elder sibling. he was always cheerful, energetic, etc. etc.. basically, a person you would like to be around all the time.
now back to a few months ago. i go see my cousin in the hospital like one of the first couple days he was there. i was speechless. cords going up and down, left and right, around him, IN him. and they (the doctors) were JUST doing tests to find out what exactly was a matter with him. they said the tests will tell what was a matter in the next week or less.
it was some time in april i think. yeah april or may. on a friday. gorgeous day. sun was out. school was out for the weekend. it was may cause i remember sadies or one of those dances was that weekend. anyways i get home. my dad isnt himself. and for all who know my dad. hes well. crazy but thats probably an understatement.
my dad was silent. quiet. didnt say a word until..
he explained to me, my 21 year old cousin has leukemia. TWENTY ONE. i sat in a chair and reflected what, and how this could happen.
he has been in and out of the hospital receiving chemo ever since. but lately his body hasnt been reacting well all.
fast forward to today. great day at school. i got out of my prob my favorite class. sun is shining (once again). and i have a few missed calls from my grandma and mom. but no voicemail. my mom calls later, crying to say the least, telling me his system isnt receiving the chemo like its supposed to and there gonna try one more. but-- the words nobody wants to hear--- "it doesnt look good." comes out of my mother's mouth. and if he doesnt take it well he has around 2 weeks. TWO WEEKS. for a man who was always lively, ecstatic, i dont have the words in my vocabulary to describe how good of a person he is.
i dont know what to do right now. but think about what just happened the past couple of months and how fast it happened. your only here for a little while, so you have to try your best to live up to that quote, "live each day as if it were your last".. even if it may sound impossible on a crummy day..
thank you for reading this blog i didnt think id write as much as i did. but your prayers are needed for my cousin and my family.
dont let anything get in the way of the person you want to become....
everybody ima get to posting the study guide for my paragraph on mother tongue shortly. sorry for being late.

5 If it is good
They are bewildered
7 If it is bad
They are ashamed
(it only said ashamed in your book not sure if it was a typo)
Anyways.
Simple just put it in question form right? I hope.
If it is good will they be bewildered?
If it is bad will they be ashamed?
Definitely relates to my writing and form of speech. What is good to WCW's standards leaves his audience bewildered and confused. When his writing is bad the audience and critics are quick to be ashamed. Nothing is able to satisfy, for there is only shame.
Ok time to give me some cushion.
Pigheaded Poet again...
9 At great risk

WCW's put so much passion in his essence that he is at risk of jeopardizing his relationship with his family. His perspective, writings, and subjects are probably scrutinize constantly by his family. His dedication to his work is also probably another variable to the so called quicksand he said he walks on.

We real cool. We

Thesis:
My thoughts of the thesis for this poem is about how sinning leads to an early demise of any individual. Living the life where every action or choice that one makes that is the opposite of what is considered amiable will indeed lead to the afterlife with haste. A character with corrupted morals without the light of hope on their side...well ask yourself if that is a "real cool" route to go.
I heard an interesting conversation today, and wanted to get your thoughts.
Should a person with a warrant out for their arrest be allowed to vote?
Thoughts?
I think everyone should be allowed to vote. Everyone single person regardless of what they've done. What they have to do to rehabilitate from what they have done, and their quality of life in a correctional institution is affected by representatives that get elected. To get elected you have to get votes. Therefore everyone should be allowed to vote. Maybe quality of life is going to far for some people. Let put it as their safety in a correctional institute is affected from a state and federal level.

I chose Man's Search for Meaning by, Viktor E. Frankl,(par. 17) "I became disgusted with the state of affairs which compelled me, daily and hourly, to think of only such trivial things. I forced my thoughts to turn to another subject. Suddenly I saw myself standing on the platform of a well-lit, warm, and pleasant lecture room. In front of me sat an attentive audience on comfortable upholstered seats. I was giving a lecture on the psychology of the concentration camp! All that oppressed me at that moment became objectice, seen and described from the remote viewpoint of the science. By this method I succeeded somehow in rising above the situation, above the sufferings of the moment, and I observed them as if they were already of the past. Both I and my troubles became the object of an interesting psychoscientific study undertaken by myself...Emotion, which is suffering, ceases to be suffering as soon as we form a clear and precise picture of it."
Thesis: I belive that the sentence that states, "I was giving a lecture on the psychology of the concentration camp!" Viktor E. Frankl is stating that he gets to be the teacher. He gets to give his opinion on concentration camps and how he lived through it. Getting the point across of the suffering that they all went through. How the ones that survive only become stronger.

Whew! The midterm was not that bad. I am glad i studied, it really prepared me for today. I was really sad that Michael had to withdraw from our class. It is always nice to hear what our elders have to say. Hopefully he still checks out the blogospere every now and then. I do have to agree with Michael when he told all of us to stay in school. Some may say that school is not for them, but it does not hurt to have an education. Like me I got caught up in a job that decided to pay me a decent amount of money for a common sence job. I have been at my job for almost 4 years now. Everyday I sit at my desk and take the same calls everyday. Nothing new to learn that i have not already taken in. I made it a choice of mine to take my schooling and put it at one of my main priorities. For everyone out there who thinks school is not for them just hang in there. Money is not going anywhere it rotates round and round in a circle.

Man's Search for Meaning (4)
Strangely enough, a blow which does not even find its mark can, under certain circumstances, hurt more than one that finds its mark. Once I was standing on a railway track on a snowstorm. In spite of the weather our party had to keep on working. I worked quite hard at mending the track with gravel, since that was the only way to keep warm. For only one moment I paused to get my breath and to lean on my shovel. Unfortunately the guard turned around just then and thought I was loafing. The pain he caused me was not from any insults or any blows. The guard did not think it worth his while to say anything, not even a swear word, to the ragged, emaciated figure standing before him, which probably reminded him only vaguely of a human form. Instead, he playfully picked up a stone and threw it at me. That, to me, seemed the way to attract the attention of a beast, to call a domestic animal back to its job, a creature with which you have so little in common that you do not even punish it.
The thesis is him saying that there are things that hurt a lot more than any physical harm. It is the first sentence of the paragraph and that is proven when he restates it further down when he says, "The pain he caused me was not from any insults or any blows."

In "status anxiety" the author states, "a car advertisement will, for example, be careful to ignore aspects of human pschology and of the overall process of buying and ownning that could spoi, or at least dampen, our joy at coming to possess the featured vehicle. Most notably, it will fail to mention out tendency to cease ceing excited by anything after we have owned for a short while. The quickest way to stop noticing something, may to be to buy it-just as the quickest way to stop apprecitating someone may be to marry him or her. We are tempted to believe that certain ahievements and possessions will give us enduring satisfication. We are invited to imagine outselves scaling the steep cliff of happiness in order to reach a wide, high plateu on which we will live out the rest of out lives; we are not reminded that soon after gaining the summit, we will be called down again into fresh lowlands of anxiety and desire". (line 8)
This single paragraph stood out most out of all the stories that we have read. The meaning to this paragraph is simple, people are never satisfied. We will always want something better than what we have, even though what we have is not broken. I say broken to mean a variety of things, not just in a materialistic matter. People buy things to cover up whats inside, to take the place of those missing piecies. In the end everything gets old and everyone is forgotten. In conlusion, we desire things that we want at the moment, but as time goes on we are once again unsatisfied.

Status Anxiety, Paragraph 8:
"The quickest way to stop noticing something, may be to buy it-just as the quickest way to stop appreciating someone may be to marry him or her. We are tempted to believe that certain achievements and possessions will give us enduring satisfaction. We are invited to imagine ourselves scaling the steep cliff of happiness in order to reach a wide, high plateau on which we will live out the rest of our lives, we are not reminded that soon after gaining the summit, we willbe called down again into fresh lowlands if anxiety and desire."
Many people today don't actually value what is important in life. We are never going to be fully satisfied. Our thirst for material things is never quenched. Once we get what we want, we get bored and move on to the next best thing we can get out selfish little hands on. In this paragraph, de Botton sets an image in our minds of a person climbing a cliff wishing to get to the top. Metaphorically, happniess is there waiting for him. Once the climber reaches the peak, he no longer wants what is there for him. Maybe we need to stop and count our blessings. Maybe we need to stop and smell the roses. Maybe we need to be thankful for the cards we are dealt with. We never really appriciate things until they are really gone. It is nice to have expensive things. However, they are that much nicer if we actually VALUE them.
Unhappy with the riches cause you piss poor morally.

I am choosing to write my thesis on an Assorted Poem by William Carlos Williams called
PIGHEADED POET
Everything I do
Everything I write
Drives me
From those I love
If it is good
They are bewildered
If it is bad
Ashamed
At great risk
To the love they bear me
I walk barefoot
In quicksand
Basically, the thesis is that whatever you do in life its always going to make someone upset. You cant always please everyone. I think its important to please yourself first. because its YOUR life. I feel that you should live it the way you want it to. Lines 5-8 I feel i can really relate to. Whenever I do really well at something and I let my family know about they always question me. Like I wasnt able to do it on my own. It hurts. It makes me think that they think I'm not capable of doing great things by myself.
However, when i mess up they are disappointed in me and as it says in the poem...ashamed. But in the end they love me no matter how many times i mess up. i guess you could say in a way...i am a little pigheaded. meh. thats life.
I would also like to do Status Anxiety Paragraph #9
because that poem was short.
"Life seems to be a process of replacing one anxiety with another and substituting it one desire for another- which is not to say should never strive to overcome any of our anxieties or fulfill any of our desires but rather to suggest that we should perhaps build into our strivings an awareness of the way our goals promise us a respite and resolution that they cannot, by definition, deliver. The new car will rapidly be absorbed, like all the other wonders we already own, into the material backdrop of our lives, where we will hardly ever register its existence-until the night when a burglar does us the paradoxical service of smashing a window to steal the radio and bring home to us, in the midst of the shattered glass, how much we are grateful for."
The thesis for this paragraph is dont let your materials items such as a fancy car or your brand name leather bag and couture clothes define you. I mean theres nothing wrong with buying nice things with the hard earned money you made, just dont let it become who you are. Material items and money can be gone instantly. And if you let these things become you...then a part of you will be gone in a way too.
Nice things are nice to have...but it really wont matter like 2 years from now. no one is going to care how you dressed, what you bought, or the type of car you drove.
everything i do, i do for myself.
Also I would like to mention a topic we covered lightly in class our last meeting. LAZY MOMS.
okay...so nick said that his mom basically didnt do "shit" if i recall correctly.
and i would have to agree with him when it comes to my mother as well. I know she works and such. But there is so much more to being a mother than just providing food, clothes, and shelter.
I remember during my freshman yr. in high school i was having boy troubles and i was extremely sad. I went to my mom to ask her for her advice and the only thing she could bark at me was "you dont need boys right now."
and i was just like "wtf thanks for your useless advice." hearing her say that...it made me feel like she didnt really give a damn. i mean....i guess i couldve taken it the wrong way but it didnt help the situation. i still had to deal with it.
till this very day my mother is still the same way. her idea of playingg a role in my life only includes depositing 150 dollars into my bank account. and thats pretty much it. she throws her money in my face and says that she taking care of me. thats nothing. she doesnt call me. she doesnt ask me how im feeling. she doesnt nurture the way a mother should
shes not really in my life anymore. and were not on good terms.
i think its important to have some sort of mother figure in your life. but if not...thats okay too.
good night.

"I know this for a fact, because when I was growing up, my mother's 'limited' English limited my perception of her. I was ashamed of her English. And I had plenty of empirical evidence to support me: the fact that people in department stores, at banks, and at restaurants did not take her seriously, did not give her good service, pretended not to understand her, or even acted as if they did not hear her.
I feel so angry towards that people that act that way. Those who automatically judge at the first impression, whether its the accent or clothing. It is not right how a person speaks English affects the quality of what they have to say just like how a persom dresses affects how they are portrayed. Many people still today are close minded about certain issues. For example, most hispanics with an accent are mostly looked down upon because most people would care to of what they have to say thinking that they are too dumb to say anything smart. Now THAT'S dumb! That is just like thinking every middle easterns are terrorists, which could lead to racism. Again people who are close-minded! I think Amy Tan also touches on this subject because she is also a minority. One of the themes, I think, in her story Mother Tongue is to send out a message to not judge a book by its cover. She is trying to relate to every minority that people are different but thats okay.
GOOD LUCK on the midterm everyone!

Status Anxiety-Paragraph 7
"A car advertisement will, for example, be careful to ignore aspects of human psychology and of the overall process of buying and owning that could spoil, or at least dampen, our joy at coming to possess the featured vehicle. Most notably, it will fail to mention something, may be to buy it--just as the quickest way to stop appreciating someone may be to marry him or her. We are tempted to believe that certain achievements and possessions will give us enduring satisfaction. We are invited to imagine ourselves scaling the steep cliff of happiness in order to reach a wide, high plateu on which we will live out the rest of our lives; we are not reminded that soon after gaining summit, we will be called down again into fresh lowlands of anxiety and desire."
THESIS: "We are tempted to believe that certain achievements and possessions will give us enduring satisfaction." Early on in our lives we are taught to believe that unless we have actual proof of succeeding at something then we really have not accomplished anything at all. Proof can be anything from an "A" on a report card to driving around in a flashy car. The more possessions you accumulate the better you can demonstrate to others that you have succeeded. Society has driven us to the point of believing that status symbols are the only thing worth striving for. It is a sick little cycle. Once we attain what we have been chasing after we get bored and start looking for our next hunt. We do not stop and realize that there is so much more to life than showing off that we have come up in the world.
Nam;
I understand what you are saying. However, I wonder if these people who have not been able to keep their lives in order have the mental ability to make an educated desicion. The majority of warrants issued are due to not appearing in court. Therefore, if someone can find the time to make it to a polling location, yet unable to make it to court, are they making the right decision. If that is the case, do we want someone that makes such a bad decision to vote on who is going to run the country? Essentially, every vote will affect millions of people. I would feel better if someone who did not have their facts straight, not vote. It is easier to vote for a president or many propositions than it is to get a drivers license. It's easier to vote than to get a credit card or buy a car.
As to “Their quality of life in a correctional institution is affected by representatives that get elected”. I’m sorry, but we are talking about convicted criminals. They are supposed to be punished for their actions. I think that we should make their living conditions worse. Lets make their “hard time”-hard time. We should take away any entertainment that they currently hve. I have to pay for cable. Inmates get it free. Let’s make it as unpleasant a stay as possible. Let’s not encourage their return. That is true rehabilitation. I’m not against programs that help inmates learn a trait or get an education. I’m against making criminals, super criminals by allowing them to work out and hang out. They pass on information and help each other learn how to commit more crimes. I think we should take away visitation rights as well. These things should be rewards not rights.

Status Anxiety (Paragraph 18):
"Then, too, whatever differences exist among people, they are as nothing next to the differences between the most powerful humans and the great deserts, high mountains, glaciers, and oceans of the world. There are natural phenomena so enormous as to make the variations between any two people seem mockingly tiny. by seeking these out, and experiencing a consoling sense of the insignificance of all humans within the cosmos, we may mitigate whatever discomfort we feel over our inferior position of the social hierarchy"."
Thesis:
Professor Hsiao briefly spoke about the significance of the meaning of this paragraph during class. Basically, the difference between two people is TINY in comparison to other wonders of the world. When someone is comparing themselves to another, they might think it is the BIGGEST difference, and often give it too much unnecessary importance. We often spend too much of our time on little things that don't really matter, when we could be out, exploring, and truly valuing what is important to one. When we actually experience the natural phenomena of the world, we will realize how tiny we really are, and what silly mistake it was to be worrying on such things like comparing oneself to another human being.
Best of luck to everyone on the midterm!..

In paragraph 11 in Man Search for meaning by Viktor E. Frankl states, "As the inner life of the prisoner tended to become more intense, he also experienced the beauty of art and nature as never before." In my interpretation I think it means as life gets harder we notice the little things that were unimportant and we do not appreciate what we have. When everything is given to us, we do not see how hard people work for just to have what some of us have today. The prisoners had it really tough when they were all locked up in a carriage. They appreciated every breath they took. Maybe at times if they were lucky enough they would even get food to eat. For example at times when we eat andndo not finish the food most of us would tend to throw it away. Someone that is starving could of have what we threw away. We as human at times take for granted what we have and the only time we realize something is when we struggle. It may be hard but i try my best to do what I can to not waste anything or not take anything or anyone for granted. My thesis would be, We don't need
pain for us to realize what is taken for granted.

Man's Search For Meaning
Paragraph 4
Strangely enough, a blow which does not even find its mark can, under certain circumstances, hurt more than one that finds its mark. Once I was standing on a railway track in a snowstorm. In spite of the weather our party had to keep on working. I worked quite hard at mending the track in a snowstorm. That guard did not think it was worth his while to say anything, not even a swear word, to the ragged, emaciated figure standing before him, which probably reminded him only vaguely of a human form. Instead, he playfully picked up a stone and threw it at me. That, to me, seemed the way to attract the attention of a beast, to call a domestic animal back to its job, a crature with which you have so little in common that you do not even punish it.
to me, he basically says that nothing is more painful than not being worthy of being punished. being treated as though you are an animal. being called back to work. not speaking, just acting out with slight physical abuse. as if stopping to punish him would be a waste of time. he feels as if though he doesnt esxist as a human, but as a meatless water filled sack. no posture, but yet is forced to do hard physical labor with the little strength that he has left. thats what i feel he is trying to get across.
Oh yeah

Well maybe a filtration process, or a process implemented into the rehabilitation process that lets them earn back the privileged to vote for the ones that want to. It is a broken system is it not? Or should all criminals and felons on any degree be denied the right to vote. Felonies range from a wide array of crimes that can be committed. A process back to earning the right to vote sounds like a good idea to me.

Status Anxiety: "Life seems to be a process of replacing one anxiety with another and subsituting one desire for another-which is not to say we should never strive to ocercome any of our anxieties or fulfill any of our desires but rather to suggest that we should perhaps build into our strivings an awareness of the way our goals promise us a respite and a resolution that they cannot, by definition, deliver. The new car will rapidly be absorbed, like all the other wonders we already own, into the material backdrop of our lives, where we will hardly register its existence-until the night when a burglar does us the paradoxical service of smashing a window to steal the radio and brings home to us, in the midst of the shatterered glass, how much we had to grateful for."
Thesis: Paragraph 9 discusses about how we should be aware of the effort we put out to obtain material objects. Once you have worked hard for that paycheck, you buy something that will fulfill your desire, and over some time the pleasure for that object will fade. Most of us will take what we buy for granted, until the day it is damaged or stolen, and will realize the effort that had been wasted. So reflecting upon this I think we should make sure the things we buy will be of valuable use, and don't take things for granted.

Man's Search for Meaning:
Paragraph 5
"When the last layers of subcutaneous fat had vanished, and we looked like skeletons disguised with skin and rags, we could watch out bodies beginning to devour themselves. The organism digested its own protein, and the muscles disappeared. Then the body had no powers of resistance left. One after another the members of the little community in our hut died. Each of us could calculate with fair accuracy whos turn would be next, and know the symptoms well, which made the correctness of our prognoses quite uncertain. "He won't last long," or, "This is the next one," we whispered to each other, and when, during our daily seach for lice, we saw our own naked bodies in the evening, we thought alike: This body here, my body, is really a corpse already. What has become of me? I am but a small portion of a great mass of human flesh....of a mass behind barbed wire, crowded into a few earthen huts: a mass of which daily a certain portion begins to rot because it has become lifeless."
The very last sentence is the thesis. But, if one so chooses to be spontaneous, I believe, "This body here, my body, is really a corpse already" could be a thesis as well.
Comments:
Self motivation and control has been lost for our lives. We no longer carry the spark for personal will. Are we not a society of cattle, branded with influential "likes and dislikes"? In this paragraph this camp pulls the physical life out of men, but for us as a society we are clearly bounded by a crystal walled cage as well. In life we are ONLY required to do two things: Live and Die. We really are nothing but, "...skeletons disguised with skin and rags..."(Frankl). Envious of others we put on a mask when released in societies wilderness. Its almost as if we've lost a little piece of our human integrity as our clocks count down.

HW Thesis
Assorted Poems by William Carlos Williams
Harlem/A Dream Deferred/by Langston Hughes
What happens to a dream deferred?
Does it dry up
like a raisin in the sun?
Or fester like a sore--
And then run?
Does it stink like rotten meat?
Or crust and sugar over--
like a syrupy sweet?
Maybe it just sags like a heavy load
Or does it explode?
I think that the main thesis of this poem is what happens to a dream deferred is up to the dreamer. Anything can happen to a dream depend on what the dreamer does or does not to keep his/her dream from disappearing or coming true. This is only one thesis out of many this poem is very complex and could have many more. This is my take on the poem and the message i got.

Paragraph # 11
“Fortunately, I happened to be rebellious in nature and enjoy the challenge of disproving assumptions made about me, I became an English major my first year in college after being enrolled as premed. I started writing nonfiction as a freelancer the week after I was told by my former boss that writing was my worst skill, and I should hone my talents toward account management.”
Thesis: The thesis in this sentence is to believe in your instinct and seek the path you believe is right for you. Amy Tan‘s boss actually told her that writing was her worst skill. She thought otherwise and proved him wrong. Society was placing her in a category but she broke free of that stereotype.

mother tongue par. 4
"Lately, I've been giving more thought to what kind of English my mother speaks. Like others, I have described it to people as "broken" or "fractured" English. But I wince when I say that. It has always bothered me that I can think of no way to describe it other than "broken", as if it were damaged and needed to be fixed, as if it lacked a certain wholeness and soundness. I've heard other terms used, "limited English," for example. But they seem just as bad, as if everything is listed, including people perceptions of the limited English speaker."
Thesis
Not only in this paragraph, but throughout Mother Tongue, Amy Tan believes everybody's English is somewhat "broken" and/or "limited". She is embarrassed by the way she speaks to her peers at work compared to the way she speaks to her mother and husband. Overall, Mother Tongue shows that we not only judge people based on there appearance (clothes, hair, etc), but also by the way they speak. Individuals that speak with slang or poor English may not receive the same recognition than a person with excellent English.

Status Anxiety
paragraph 13
Ruins reprove us for our folly in sacrificing peace of mind for the unstable rewards of earthly power. Beholding old stones, we may feel our anxieties over our achievements-and the lack of them-slacken. What does this matter, really, if we have not succeeded in the eyees of others, if there are no monuments and processions in our honour or if no one smiled at us at a recent gathering? Everything is, in any event, fated to disappear, leaving only the New Zealanders to sketch the ruins of our boulevards and offices. Judged against eternity, how little of what agitates us makes any differnce.
The Thesis in my words is:
We should not be blinded by status or monuments because they do not stand the test of time.
This paragraph is arguing why we should have any axieties over how our actions are viewed by other people. We should not stress about our achievements-and lack of them because in the end EVERTHING is fated to disappear. I do agree with this paragraph, we should only streess about our actions that will affect us in our life time.

The Allegory of the Cave by Plato.
Paragraph 21
He will require to grow accustomed to the sight of the upper world. And first he will see the shadows best, next the reflections of men and other objects in the water, and then the objects themselves; (# 21)
then he will gaze upon the light of the moon and the stars and the spangled heaven; and he will see the sky and the stars by night better than the sun or the light of the sun by day?
Thesis
My take on the thesis of this paragraph is that after letting go of this vice, this person will look at the light which is the truth, but at the same time he/she will still be drawn to the vice. It will take some time for this person to forget the past, but when he/she does they will finally see the truth clearer. In this paragraph Plato states, " And at first he will see the shadows best, next the reflections of men and other objects in the water, and then the objects themselves; then he will gaze upon the light of the moon and the stars and the spangled heaven; and he will see the sky and the stars by night better than the sun or the light of the sun by day?" (Lines 2-4). This to me reminds me of something i did not to long ago, when i plagerized in college. Plagerizing is what got me into my cave and taking this class is me looking at the upper world. Things i see when i escape my cave will be hazy because i will still see the darkness of my cave, or plagerizing, but things will clear up when i finally look to the sky.

Status Anxiety Paragraph 8:
"The quickest way to stop noticing something, may be to buy it-just as the quickest way to stop appreciating someone may be to marry him or her. We are tempted to believe that certain achievements and possessions will give us enduring satisfaction. We are invited to imagine ourselves scaling the steep cliff of happiness in order to reach a wide, high plateau on which we will live out the rest of our lives, we are not reminded that soon after gaining the summit, we willbe called down again into fresh lowlands if anxiety and desire."
Thesis:
The Thesis stated by the authur in this paragraph seems to be that the imaginings of wanting an item are grander than the actually object. We spend our whole lives striving for objects that we do not posess, and in that lose sight of what is really important. To exemplify this, I point to everyone with a working car. I do not currently own a car, so a main drive in my life is to obtain one. That is a so called, "Status Symbol," that I would like to obtain. People who own or lease cars don't think about what kind of advantages it grants them over people without. It is a, "Plateau," that many people have quickly decended from. In short, this thesis asks us if it is worth it to strive our whole lives for material objects when we will quickly absorb their existence into our daily lives?

I believe that the thesis is the line that says "We are tempted to believe that certain achievements and possessions will give us enduring satisfaction." This line is everything that i live against. i think that no one should get any kind of satisfaction from a material object. Any happiness should come from with in one's self. Also in the beginning of the paragraph it says that when we want somthing so bad, but when we finally get it it is like the want is gone. It is so sad to see society like this. Those kinds of people are the ones buying the high ticket items to be recgonized high in society. Wanting objects is just a cycle; you want, you buy, you get over and then it repeats again. The truth is, when you take everything away we are all the same.

I think the thesis is “We are tempted to believe that certain achievements and possessions will give us enduring satisfaction.” When we want something but don’t have it, we are used to think: that is all we need, and we really need, and we try to have it anyway. But no long after owing it, we get bored and may don’t even remember that we have it.
To me, human being is greedy and never satisfied. We want more and more. The more we have, the more we want of new things. Sometime, we may just try to get what we want, but forget what it is for. Thus, there is only the scene of possessing. We exaggerate the feeling of lack that make we feel we need the thing more than we do actually, or we overflow the satisfaction after achieving the target.

I chose Paragraph 12 from "Status Anxiey" by Alain De Bolton
"My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings:/Look on my words, ye might, and despair." reads an inscription on the pedestal of a statue of Ramses II of Egypt, according to Shelley's " Ozymandias" (1818). But there is need for the mighty, or even the humble to obey the second command, for the pharoah himself lies in pieces on the ground, and " round the decay/ of that collosal wreck, boundless and bare/ The lone and level sands stretch far away.
The thesis of this Paragraph is that all things you posses will eventually be nothing. An inscription on the statue of Ramses II of Egypt declares, "My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings:/Look on my words, ye might, and despair." This man, once mighty and exalted, now lays in decayed ruins. It shows that we are just humans, We all will die and become nothing. Our possessions, no matter how important at the time, will become nothing as well. The only things that can survive time are not material at all. They cannnot even be touched physically. The things i speak of are memories and love. Only these things are mighty enough to stand the test of time.

Mid-term review
In a sense, everything I have ever written has been for him, to win his approval even though I know my father can’t read English words, even though my father’s only reading includes the brown-ink Esto Sports magazine from Mexico city and the bloody alarma magazines that feature yet another sighting of La virgin de Guadalupe on a tortilla or a wife’s revenge on her philandering husband by bashing his skull in with a molcajete (a kitchen mortar made of volcanic rock). (7)
The thesis in paragraph number 7, Only Daughter by Sandra Cisneros is where she wrote that “In a sense, everything I have ever written has been for him”. Sandra was referring to her father. Sandra felt rejected from her family because of her father's behavior towards her. His rejections make her believe that she was not important within her family. For example, every time her father would introduce his children with people, he would introduce them as seven sons, not as six sons and one daughter. Sandra’s stubbornness helped her change her father’s mentality. She only wanted to be noticeable in front of her father’s eyes. She knew, that the only way to make her father think differently was, for her to finish a career. Her father wanted his sons to succeed one day. Once, her father told his sons, to used their heads, instead, of their hands towards life. Sandra kind of knew her fathers thoughts towards education. Achieving a career was probably her best shot for his acceptance, and perhaps accepted her as a successful daughter, not as a successful son. So that is why, Sandra pursued her dreams. I picked this paragraph because in a way, I am like her. I enjoy challenging any people’s opinions. Being part of a Mexican family could be challenging most of the times. When we think differently than ordinary woman, we are just not accepted by our people. Mexican females who are trying to succeed could be criticized and judged unjustly because of the mentality of our race. As for me, all those years trying to fit-in are over. Now, all I care about is the well-being of my daughter, her spiritual believes, and her financial needs.
Hopefully reviewing some of the blogs will help me on my midterm

Man's Search for Meaning: "Happiness must happen, and the same holds for success: you have to let it happen by not caring about it. I want you to listen to what your conscience commands you to do and go on to carry it out to the best of your knowledge. Then you will live to see that in the long - in the long run, I say! - success will follow you precisely because you had forgotten to think about it."(1)
My conclusion of which line was the thesis was the first line. Correct me if I am wrong, but what I think Mr. Frankl was trying to get across was that one should not stress his or herself out by trying to achieve success. Success should ultimately be a goal which draws happiness towards the person reaching for it. When a person works too hard at a job he or she calls it work, and not a career. That is because the person is unhappy. Success should in no way appear that way at the finish line. Enjoy the training and path which navigates one's life towards a better being. Like what Mr. Frankl said, "Don't aim at success - the more you aim at it and make it a target, the more you are going to miss it."

Man's Search for Meaning
"When the last layers of subcutaneous fat had vanished, and we looked like skeletons disguised with skin and rags, we could watch our bodies beginning to devour themselves. The organism digested its own protein, and the muscles disappeared. Then the body had no powers of resistance left. ONe after another the members of the little community in our hut died. Each of us could calculate with fair accuracy whose turn would be next, and knew the symptoms well, which made the correctness of our prognoses quite uncertain. "He won't last long," or, "This is the next one," we whispered to each other, and when during our daily search for lice, we saw our own naked bodies in the evening, we thought alike: This body here, my body, is really a corpese already. What has become of me? I am but asmall portion of a great mass of human flesh... of a mass behind barbed wire, crowed into a few earthen huts: a mass of which daily a certain portion begins to rot because it has become lifeless".
Thesis:Their body's are becoming corpses.
They began to loose everything, from their muscles to themselves. People were giving up and would die. It seemed like they had a certain innocence to themselves. They realized everything was bad and saw people passing away but still made a game out of it. Like when I saw a dead body when I was a kid it did not shock me. I actually went to my friend and told them about it. It's the hope and innocence that kept them alive.

Status anxiety (paragraph 1)
Every society holds certain groups of peopel in high esteem while condemning others, or ignoring others, weather on the basis of their skills, accent, temperment, gender, physical attributes, ancestry, religion of skin color. Yet such arbitrary and subjective criteria for success and failure and far from permanent or universal. Qualities and abilities that equate with high status in one place or era have marked tendency to grow irrelevant or even underseriable in others.
I think that the thesis is that we judge others based on many aspects of their lives. However its says that failure and success is not permanent and subject to change depending on the circumstances. It has a lot to do with how we precieve others.

I got some questions about the homework for monday. I know we must have 5 questions for the Intro, Body, and the Conclusion. However, i am a little bit confused with what kind of questions that i need to ask? Does it start with what, where, when, how, and what is the last one for those type of questions? Could you give me at least one example for the question and the answer? That would be great sir. Thank you before.

What are you looking for in this world why do we as human want more and more. Such as myself there has been many times in my life where i have wanted to tell someone or ask someone a question. Why do i have such a hard time in asking a person a simple question? I know what the answer it is going to be yes or no. I still have a hard time expressing myself. Why do i still have this problem? There was a time when i had a false front, on the outside i was happy but deep inside i had low self esteem. I have broken the false front but still i have a hard time just asking a sipmle question. The answer will be yes or no its just that simple. I do not know if i will ask the simple question. If the answer is yes then it might go somewhere and if no it is all over. I need to work on my problem.
The best thing i have heard is you will never know if you do not ask.
It That simple will i break this cycle or will i go back to what i know and use excuses on why not.

Hello everyone. Well I feel the same way many do about the test. I do not think I did a great job. I get nerves and I draw a blank. The only thing we can do is try to do better on the next one. If there is a next one. I hope I do not have to drop the class, do to a low grade.
It was sad to see Mike go. He is a good person with good advice. I got to know him a little bit more when we took the trip to the Getty, along with Alicia and Orlando. Orlando is smart, outgoing, and yes girls he is cute. Alicia is also smart, sweet, and looks a lot like my son's godmother. Everyone in the class has something that will help me remember them.
Well everyone have a good night and a great weekend.

Yes Prof H. we are going to hit your target with the 2000 by Halloween. I thought I would take a break on my midterm stuff for my other classes and catch up on the posts. You miss a lot even if you do not read them for just a couple of days.
Hope everyone is keeping up the Presidential election....looks like we are going to be witnessing some more history. But hey you never know we live in a country where anything can happen. Ha-ha. That is all; my brain is fried from our test I need some sleep.

Try and save paper and print it on the back side so this Take Home Midterm will be in its entirety a couple pages instead of 5 or 6 that I am expecting.
Does that make sense?
************************************
Good work on the Midterm.
Again, I want to say that those who did take it with the class this past week should congratulate yourself.
You have made it this far, and we are at the halfway point.
Like Danny said in terms of a pep talk to himself and to you all, remember that you are almost to Christmas.
Keep working hard and focus on what you have to do.
In spite of the setbacks or life seemingly taking control you must cut out what is unimportant and focus in on these last 8 9 weeks as the case may be.
I will have the midterms returned in as many weeks (a couple).
Try not to think about what/how you did.
I will give everyone a grade check in the coming weeks as well.
Be patient.
Again, I want to acknowledge those that have stayed and done their best.
That is all you can do.
Keep the Midterm reflections coming in and even discussions about the presidential election and other current events as well.
America is changing right before our eyes and the world is as well.
No longer is New York the hub of the world: London has taken over.
In as many weeks the stock market has lost close to 1000 and gained back close to that amount and gone back down again: It will be a roller coaster ride until that bailout takes effect and even then consumer confidence and credit is at an all time low.
It is definitely a buyer's market out there: everything is for sale. Businesses are going out of business for lack of a better word.
I have got my 20th Macy's coupon even when I have not shopped there in as many years. They are desperate as all retailers are.
I appreciate the reflections by everyone: You notice the difference in Isaias and Greg's posts versus the earlier strands of posts about videogames and this or that: It is serious and heartfelt.
To our English 52 class,
Michael was and always will be an O.G. in my opinion because he always maintained his integrity and principles in the face of life and hardship. Trust me, he had a very difficult life.
Divulging, he shared with me before class how hard his life was and no matter what how he would graduate with either a two or four year degree no matter how long it took him.
Inspiring, really
Did you all see his tears and the amount of emotion in his voice? He really meant what he said and said what he meant.
He will be missed.

Stay positive all.

WELL I JUST GOT LAYED OFF FROM MY JOB YESTERDAY.I HAD BEEN WORKING THERE A LITTLE OVER A YEAR,AND I REALLY LOVED MY JOB :( I WORKED FOR AN AEROSPACE COMPANY NAMED CARLTON FORGE. THEY LET GO 50 EMPLOYEES, IT WAS A SAD DAY FOR ME YESTERDAY. IN THE PAST YEAR I WORKED THERE, THERE HAS BEEN 3 LAY OFF'S THE FIRST ONE I EXPERIENCED WAS A MAJOR ONE, THEY GOT RID OF ABOUT 150-200 EMPLOYEED, AND THE OTHER TWO LAY-OFFS HAVE BEEN ABOUT 100 IN TOTAL.
IT JUST SHOWS HOW BAD OUR ECONOMY REALLY IS AND SO MANY PEOPLE ARE LOSING THERE JOBS. WHICH IS WHY WE NEED TO STAY EDUCATED AND EARN OUR DEGREES SO THINGS LIKE THIS WONT AFFECT US. WHAT WAS SAD TO SEE AT WORK FOR ME, WAS THE OLDER MEN LOSING THERE JOBS, WITH ME KNOWING THAT THEY HAVE FAMILIES OUT THERE THAT THEY HAVE TO SUPPORT. EVEN A MAN THAT HAD BEEN WORKING THERE 25 YEARS GOT LAYED OFF, I COULDNT BELIVE THIS, AND ITS JUST SCARY TO KNOW THAT WAY MORE LAY OFF ARE GONNA HAPPEN, AND NOT JUST AT THIS COMPANY BUT PRACTICALLY EVERYWHERE.
WELL IM BUMMED.......

Michael, I have much respect for you. Since the first time we spoke in class, I felt your strong vive as an individual. A person that truly has gone through a lot of tough times. Nonetheless, i know you still are going through tough times, just like most of us. Yet you still stick through it, and go to work to support your family plus go to to school. You are a strong person. There is not much people in this world like you left, I think we should all take the advice you left us with in great thought. They where strong truthfull words, that i personally will carry throught out my life.

I'm still recovering from the Midterm. This was one of the hardest test I've taken so far. I've had a two year break from school, so this exam was not easy. Hope everyone gets somewhat of a good grade....
...I took my dog to the vet today because he's been having these "Hot Spot" that keep recurring. He basically keeps on licking the same spot till it becomes an open sore. Poor dog I love him soo much but he's getting to become very expensive. The doc told me that he is allergic to fleas,TO FLEAS!!! All dogs have fleas. Why must this happen. If he doesn't get any better I am going to have to put him up for adoption =(
I adopted him back in Feb. at the local pound not knowing he had such a skin problem. Oh Buddy your a handful. What shall I do with you?

Oh yeah, to the people going to Kidworks! Have Fun!!! See ya guys on the next trip.

The Great Debate
In 1970, the first televised Presidential debate aired. The debate was between Kennedy and Nixon. Nixon was sick and when he arrived to the studio, he refused to have make-up applied. Kennedy in contrast, had his hair and make-up done.
They had the debate and the issues were discussed. During the debate, Nixon was seen sweating and looked nervous. Kennedy, who had make up applied and his hair combed, was calm and was visually more appealing. Following the debate, people who saw the debate on television were polled and asked who they felt won the debate. Almost 70% of people who saw the debate felt that Kennedy easily won the debate. A separate poll of people who heard the debate on the radio was held. The results were totally different. 70% of the people, who heard the debate, felt that Nixon easily won the debate.
There was no difference between what was said on television and the radio. Therefore, how could the two polls have such different results? The answer is that we judge people based on their looks over what they say. During this election time, we are being told what to think by the media. The majority are not making decisions based on the facts or the candidate’s platform. Recently, everyone appears to want to talk politics. When people come out and tell me who they are voting for, I ask why. I get answers like “he’s for education” or “he’s for the average person”. When I probe a little further, nobody could tell me exactly what they mean. I can’t imagine a candidate that would be against education or against the middle class. If we cannot perform our due diligence and research the candidate’s platform, we should not vote.
Remember, the government cannot fix all of the problems in your life. It begins with ourselves.
VOTE BASED ON WHAT YOU KNOW, NOT ON WHAT KANYE WEST SAID.
Thoughts anyone?
