Beginning and Freshman Composition

Blogging in the Blogosphere
English 52, 60, 100

FORMAT:
When you blog, in the Title, write your first and last name as you would as if you are turning in a paper to me. Then you do not have to write my name because I know you are in my class. Write what English class you are in whether it is English 52, 60, 100 and what College.

For example, one would write:

Yue Hayes
English 52
Cerritos College
Post #1

Homelessness
Font size
In addition, for the title, pick the topic of discussion, grammar/organization, content, current events, pop culture or literature as a TITLE that we have discussed in class. Write the posts like this: write #1 Post or #2 Post or Post #50, so I can easily keep track of them and how many you write.

Of course, you are welcome to write more than several posts, and in doing so is another form of participation and does count in the participation grade. Perhaps, in class, you may not participate all that much but in the realm of the blogosphere, you can from the comfort of your own home,
  • reflect on the day's class discussion or offer up an insight that you found particularly interesting, etc., etc.

  • How does it change the way you think or thought before on the subject?

  • What actions might you take in the future? Anything is open to interpretation.

Of course, I need not go on and on about being respectful towards your peers' opinions and beliefs. If you disagree with another student's views be discreet about it: Do not say so and so is completely wrong because of this and that. Instead, say, I disagree with so and so and here are the reasons why I do. Go after their evidence and support and do not, I repeat do not attack someone else personally. This is supposed to be a forum for everyone to share their ideas and views.

*I will enforce the blogosphere by either deleting your hard work, making an example out of you here in the realm of the blogosphere or in class* . . .

Class 08/25/08

Im not one to enjoy writing or even like any English class but these last couple of lectures we have had, have actually been interesting. I look forward to coming to class, knowing I will learn something new. (not trying to kiss up Mr. Hsiao) :]

They say that the strict teachers are the ones that are disliked the most but in the long run are also appreciated the most. Mr. Hsiao will surely be one to prove that.

On our last discussion, he handed out a reading of Plato and Socratesl. To tell you the truth i Did not understand ANYTHING!!! Iam pretty sure we will get to the bottom of that though.

Aside from all these random comments im posting, here is one more. I feel weird writing the whole word out and using "one". One is used to texting and using contractions soegverything is in a shorter form.

Okay I will blog later. I need to run.:]

"Brain Energizers"

CD

Answer: Seedy Character.

WOW, I probably wouldn't have guessed that, even if I wasted my whole class time figuring it out. I like these so-called "Brain Energizers"; they get my mind going right before class starts (when I need to be thinking the most). I just thought I'd share a couple of brain teasers that I have found online with you, Mr. Hsiao, and whoever else is reading this. =P
Answers will be about 20 spaces down and I will post a link to the website as well if anyone wants to check it out.

xxxxxxxxxQUESTIONSxxxxxxxxxx
1. Paul is 20 years old in 1980, but only 15 years old in 1985. How is this possible?

2. A man gave one son 10 cents and another son was given 15 cents. What time is it?

xxxxxxxxxxxANSWERSxxxxxxxxxx
1. The years are in B.C., not A.D.

2. 1:45. The man gave away a total of 25 cents. He divided it between two people. Therefore, he gave a
quarter to two.

When I first began picking out my classes. I started using the website where students leave reviews on the teachers, giving you a little taste of what the teacher is like.

Only a couple of classes were open and only two worked with my schedule. So I had to make a choice it was between you and a female teacher. You had good reviews: Strict but helpful, hard grader but will work with you, funny, and etc.
The female teacher was said to be an easy grader, always late, doesnt give so much homework.

At first I thought heck with him, Im taking the females class. but Later that night I really thought to myself. Why am I going to cheat myself. So next day early morning I dropped the class and enrolled in yours.

I do not regret the decision I have made. I am very glad to be in your class Mr Hsiao.

So did anyone else get how the matrixs clip ties in with Allegory of the Cave? I am just brain stroming off the top of my head right now so i do not know if i am right but i am thinking that Allegory of the Cave has something to do with a group of people hiding the truth from the majority of the people. Isn't that what the matrix is pretty much about?

That matrix video you showed the class the other day was insane and the music added to it too.

John Hsiao said...

Darla, and this is for everyone, as one of the students so expertly had said in class, The Matrix ties into Plato's Allegory by way of ignorance and education: Who becomes enlightened and who remains in the dark, ignorant?

How can you apply the Cave to your life?

Are you in the dark or are you in the light?

What is the cave?

What is the sun?

Remember that is is an Allegory, representative of something much deeper than what is said literally in words.

In sum, I'd like to respond to the previous posts, validating and appreciating

Brenda, Monique, Paul, Jose, and Ariadne: thanks for the kind comments regarding me and my teaching!

I am honored and I laughed at your honesty and frankness--Monique--
your bluntness, Brenda--cheerfulness, Paul--creativity,
Jose--commentary, and Ariadne--depth and range.

(I will not comment all the time as I want this to be a forum for you and everyone to discuss what all we have talked about in class.)

Geraldo, you are right about the clip--it was insanely awesome!

The cave in my life is like being chained and raised with materialism or being taught that this is beauty and this is not. When in truth you do not know what beauty really is because the media tells you it is a certain body type for example. When really those are the “shadows on the wall” or in our world they are called illusions that are minds make. Also that is not the only part of my cave the other part has schooling , education, family, friends, social status and popular demand. All of these things have influence on me and want me to follow each one without any questioning. Education is there to teach me of what I should know and social popularity is there to assign me to a certain class of human being. Yes of course the world intimidates me, but it is only because of the unknown and pressure from the expectations of others. Those are the things that keep in the dark. However, I feel that by seeing society like this i am one step forward to the light. Society is my cave and the questions I ask are my sun.

I think you can see the allegory of the Cave from many different points. you can see it as people areound the world that have never gotten an education and when they are exposed to one they "shut down" because it is simply too much to handle, so they would rather just stay back in their own world of not knowing things, because knowledge becomes too overwhleming, making them uncomfortable.
You can also see it from a religious, political and I'm sure more points of view. Plato thought ahead and made sure this allegory would fit perfectly in any subject.

I enjoyed todays lecture. It really helped me understand the difference between a B and a C paper. I just have a couple questions on how to use dialogue on my paper properly but I will ask in class so that I can understand it better. I like what is being taught in the class and the energy of Mr. H.

When watched the Matrix in class it really put the allegory of the cave into perspective for me. Its about what we are taught to percieve reality as. What is real and not real. What is possible and impossible.
im really starting to like this class.

Hey people, i was just thinking today in english class how the American society classifies and judges people based on their status and materials (example: style of dress) and not on the more important traits like actions and character. What are your opinions about this? Am i looking at and critiquing just one typical stereotype of people or is it relevant in most subculture of America? Also, what defines ones character? I know its a heavy topic and all but im just really curious to find out about another brians feedback... please help!

Well first off, hello everyone and welcome newbie’s.

Mr. Hsiao I was at home listening to music. As I was listen to the music that streaming off my computer I came across a song I've heard many times before by Jack Johnson. But I never noticed it had a reference to allegory of the Cave. I heard Pluto in the song but never understood until you introduced our class to it. The song is called Inaudible Melodies.

Well Plato's cave is full of freaks
Demanding refunds for the things they've seen
I wish they could believe
In all the things that never made the screen
And just slow down everyone
You're moving too fast
Frames can't catch you when
You're moving like that
Slow down everyone
You're moving too fast
Frames can't catch you when
You're moving like that
Moving Too....

I think that the allegory describes future possibilities. Almost like a make your own destiny kindof deal. You can put your self out in the open and explore new ideas and concepts or you can just sit back and take things as they come. Attack your future or let your future attack you.

How can you apply the Cave to your life?
The Cave applies to several aspects of my life, but the one I want to touch upon is my college experience as a freshman at UC Davis. Before coming to UC Davis, I went to came from Whitney High School in Cerritos, CA. For those that don’t know, Whitney High School is a magnet school and is predominantly Korean/Chinese set in upper middle class suburbia. Needless to say, the kids I went to school with were pretty spoiled and ignorant about the rest of the world. They had big houses, nice cars, expensive clothes, etc.; everything was handed to them: “and they only see their own shadows of one another, which the fire throws on opposite wall of the cave.”
My freshman year of college I was assigned by housing to live on the African-American themed floor. I was literally one of about 3 other non-Black students that lived there. Most of the students on the floor were from downtown LA, Compton, or Riverside. The other 2 students ventured off onto the other floors of the residence hall, looking for people that looked like them. Unlike the other 2 non-Black students, I decided to make it a point to make friends with everyone on the floor, and have them accept me as I was and not as the stereotypical “model minority Asian nerd”. As they learned about me, I learned about them—it was an exchange of culture, appreciation, acceptance, and knowledge. My only friends at UC Davis were Black, and I always got peculiar stares on campus because I knew everyone (especially the white kids and other Asians) were wondering what a little Asian girl was doing hanging out with a bunch of Black kids.

Are you in the dark or are you in the light?
I’d say I’m in the light, but not completely; not just because of my college experience, but just because I’ve been blessed to be exposed to a lot of different types of people, ideas, experiences. There is so much more for me to learn about, people to know, places to be…that’s why I still consider myself to be partially in the dark. I believe that a person can’t be completely enlightened unless they think on a global level—beyond your group of friends, the type of music you listen to, your family, your city, your native country, etc.

What is the cave?
The cave represents our comfort zone; the environment we’re used to, the environment that allows us to be complacent, the environment that causes us to close our minds and ignore the rest of the world. Being in a cave means that you’re not open to new ideas, new people, new knowledge.

What is the sun?
New ideas. New people. New ways of living. “When he approaches the light his eyes will be dazzled, and he will not be able to see anything at all of what are now called realities.” It is difficult and sometimes painful to open your mind to new things and realities at first, but soon enough you’ll realize that if you don’t, you’re living in denial of what is around you.

Here you are Jon: a compilation of the best quotes of Dark Knight.

Transcendent role by Heath Ledger, who possessed potential and a mythic persona not fully realized in life but only after in death. He, like James Dean, might win a posthumanous Oscar--if he should win, it will be because of a unique and perfect, artistry that never was--for his future and not necessarily present work.

All the roles in Batman were equally given weight and all the actors given equivalent screen time:

The Joker: How about a magic trick?
[pulls out a pencil and sticks it upright into the table]
The Joker: I'm gonna make this pencil disappear.
[Gambol's thug walks over to kill The Joker, who slams his face into the pencil and kills him]
The Joker: Ta-daa! It's... it's gone.

Wanna know how I got these scars? My father was....a drinker. And a fiend. And one night he goes off crazier than usual. Mommy gets the kitchen knife to defend herself. He doesn't like that. Not. One. Bit. So, me watching, he takes the knife to her, laughing while he does it. Turns to me and he says "Why so serious?" Comes at me with the knife,"Why so serious?" He sticks the blade in my mouth. "Let’s put a smile on that face!" And..... Why so serious?

Let me get this straight: You think that your client, one of the wealthiest, most powerful men in the world, is secretly a vigilante who spends his nights beating criminals to a pulp with his bare hands. And your plan is to blackmail this person? Good luck.

Bruce Wayne: People are dying, Alfred. What would you have me do?
Alfred Pennyworth: Endure, Master Wayne. Take it. They'll hate you for it, but that's the point of Batman, he can be the outcast. He can make the choice that no one else can make, the right choice.
Bruce Wayne: Well today I found out what Batman can't do. He can't endure this. Today you get to say "I told you so."
Alfred Pennyworth: Today, I don't want to.
[pauses for several moments]
Alfred Pennyworth: But I did bloody tell you.

The night is darkest just before the dawn. And I promise you, the dawn is coming.

Batman: Then why do you want to kill me?
The Joker: [laughs] I don't want to kill you! What would I do without you? Go back to ripping off mob dealers? No, no, you... you complete me.

The Joker: [speaking to Two-Face] Do I really look like a guy with a plan? You know what I am? I'm a dog chasing cars. I wouldn't know what to do with one if I caught it. You know, I just do things. The mob has plans, the cops have plans, Gordon's got plans. You know, they're schemers. Schemers trying to control their worlds. I'm not a schemer. I try to show the schemers how pathetic their attempts to control things really are. So, when I say that you and your girlfriend was nothing personal, you know that I'm telling the truth.

John Hsiao said...

Thank you for the posts:

I will try responding quickly and briefly to each one:

Stephen: Judging people does come down to clothes and appearance or more so race/class/gender. All three are readily visible and get judgment first.

Character is beneathe the surface of all three and is at best hard to fathom without spending more time and effort. Alas, as fleeting as our lives are the more advanced and cultured take the necessary time to figure out depth below the superficial.

I like Anna and Darla's post because they do dig deep on what is perceived as reality.

Society, school, and family (and others as well) tells you to hang around those that are of similar like and ilk because that is what those institutions have ingrained in you.

You can sit there passively chained and take in everything just as Tommy has implicated or you can take control of your life and live your life according to your dreams, hopes, and values.

Gabriel makes a good point that Melissa supports emphatically. We all are Neo in the Matrix. It just so happens that we have to decide who controls us? Who are the Agents? Media, society, elders, friends, and so on and so forth. Neo is an everyman and not just a singular unique character. He represents all of us.

Melissa, good intertextuality that Ariadne upheld as well. Thinking goes above and beyond just literature. It extends to media, music, and life. Good illustration and example. Thank you for sharing and welcoming in the "newbies" too.

I liked the frankness and honesty of Shannon, and we will miss you not coming to the Museum this upcoming Friday the 12th.

Michelle, Lisa, Amador, Sonny, Wesley (you have to tell us that story sometime about your name), Trista, Natalie, and anyone else [(Jamtz who are you?)] thanks for blogging.

Good question. Anthony, of course, you must credit the quote. Give credit where the quote is taken from. Everything written has an author.

Nick, no wonder, you like speaking, you are talented at it. Hhhmm... let me see, nope, there is no way around the writing. This is English.

I think of one of the best subjects you talked about was Joker and evil.I think the Idea of evil is complex thing. The Joker while does evil actions, thinks him self as evil? It thinks of him self as a shaker of the norm as changer of ways. We as the majority hate change, and will do anything to keep the status quota on track. If we are to look at the Joker he is a man who creates him self over and over.He is Change he is Chaos incarnate so he would naturally find stability a enemy or even evil. Its an interesting concept to think about. I think we can learn a lot from Comics a lot more then people think

hmm i like the point mr. I think I might be the first one to blog from GWC... Does that mean everyone else would rather take the pop quiz? :P

Well, first off I'd like to say that this blog idea is pretty awesome, considering I'm one of those people who never talk in class. It's really irritating sometimes because I'd know an answer to something, but the time it takes for me to collect confidence is wayyy too long. I can collect my thoughts and say exactly what I want to say this way, so thank you for that little break from having to speak in class all the time in order to receive those participation points.

OH, by the way, I looove the Brain Energizers in the beginning of class, though I could never get them. It's fun to hear the answer and go "OHHHHHhhh." One day, though, I plan to think very hard and get the answer. I also love the pop culture talks that Mr. Hsiao sneaks in during class. It might be a little off topic, but I think it's a great break from the lectures!

I love how Mr. Shiao is able and willingly free to tell the class all about the celebirty life. (For example, Mr. Shaio knew every girl celeb. that was pregneant!) I think is so funny how he just talks about it like it is no big deal, which really its not. Because I'm sure all the girls know all about everything from our trash mags. Haha. I think it is funny in a good way of course. It's just I have never had a male teacher talk about celebrities and know what is actually going on. I LOVE it!

I should probably blog about something more important because I personally wouldn't count blogging about celebs in an English blog spot. But we were handed out a paper last week. It was about Plato and Socratesl. I was totally psyched when he handed it out because I love learning about this subject. It is a lot of deep thinking and I rarely ever get to do that in my classes.

But The Hills are on now and soon to be the VMAs.. and I'm going to go watch. Hopefully Mr. Shaio will watch some clips of everything so we can talk about it tomorrow at class. Seee yaaa.

Mr. Hsiao is hilarious. Even if I'm not laughing, his jokes are still funny. I cannot believe how much pop culture one man can know at one point in time! I think it would be great to see what is going on inside his head.

okay here is my intake on the VMAs:

who the heck is tokio whatever they are. and i seriously thought that the guy with the big black hair was a chick no joke!! ahh.. what is this music world coming too?!?! why can't led zep jimi hendrix the beatles be the music that kids are listening to. i mean really!?! all these people aren't going to last. they won't be legends like led zep or hendrix.. or the beatles!! it seems like every band that comes out lasts like for a year or two and then disappear. its insane how little they last. but i did like christina aguliars (sp?) preformance. but rihanna(sp?).. 1st perfomace she has a mullet..second her hair looked like john travolta in greece.. yikes! paramore really did an amazing job on preformance but travis barker totally rocked it on the drums!!! oh good for britney to turn her life around i mean thats amazing that she was in the hospital for intensive care in january to eight months later winning her first vmas awards, right? good for her. people are probably going to be like what the heck does this kayla girl know?.. like i said this is my intake on the vmas.. but russell brand AWESOME job. totally loved him. because you have to be smart to kind of get his jokes. i'd love to go see one of his comidian acts did anyone understand little wayne (i think) when he was on stage? i had to change the channel because all i heard was mummbles. haha. i promise i am no this judgemental in person!! I'm really nice. it just bums me out how the music has changed in the last fifty years. From elivs, johnny cash, led zepplin, bruce springsteen, fleetwood mac, nsynce, brittney spears. it just shows how fast things go in and out of being popular. its CRAZY!!!
alright i have class tomorrow at 9:35am.. ahhh!!

OH BUT I TOTALLY LOVED MCLOVIN!!! HAHAHAH TOTALLY FUNNY. "im freaking trashed!!" haha great.

alright seee yaaa!

In last Thursdays class Mr. H asked us if there is always an impression to be made in a relationship. I think that in this case, impressions are an inner use between couples. Impressions are based on the idea that the individual is what he/she sees. In which, a relationship should be based on happiness and love, therefore, I should impress upon the other person things that will make them happy and feel loved. Without those to base a relationship on, impressions would have no purpose and the connection between two people would be false. Impressions are necessary to make a relationship work.

I must admit...this class seems pretty challenging...and I am extremely lazy and a procrastinator when it comes to homework and what not.But i know that in order for me to learn something I must take some action as well.

I was in a dilemma when choosing my English class, the same situation my fellow classmate, Melissa was in.I was left with 2choices. It was either Mr. Hsiao or some other teacher called Lovejoy or something like that. I was going to go for Lovejoy because I saw the word "easy" on her reviews. But I thought about it and decided to go for the interesting, hard grader, and funny teacher. I am pretty happy with my choice because i know that at the end of every class I will leave with a little more knowledge than what i first go in with.

Now, about the Allegory of Plato, I understand some parts, but at the same time I have some doubts about what I understand. Like today, we had to do some drawings on it. But since I had a hard time understanding it, I had an even harder time drawing. I guess it's one of those things where everyone has their own interpretation. Some feedback would be nice. Until next time=]

So I finally figured out how to work this blogging thing!

Im making my final adjustments on my paper right now and going to do some reading before i get some well-needed sleeeeeeeep.

but before all that a couple things..
My opinion on the allegory is that it is a complete masterpiece that is very well still used today. Especially for older teens/young adults. When you think about it we have been chained together all the way till the end of our high school life. However, once high school is over, we are broken free and walk into a new reality or light. Whether it be going to college near home, going to a college away from home, getting a job, not getting a job, moving out, or staying with your parents, we are all faced with new decisions and challenges that ultimately create our own reality. Thats what i am getting from this, is anybody else?

OHHHH and about last night:
VMAs- alright, nothing spectacular. (except for katy perry that is)
new season of entourage- amazing.

See everybody tomorrow!

Wake up Peter Pan; you’re Not in Neverland Anymore

Whoever was in charge of screening potential child conceivers must have been sleeping while on the job when my “father” was up for his interview. How dare my parents conceive me without my permission! What happened to the hard working, role models you see on T.V.? They just don’t make fathers like they use to. My father has been an idiot my whole life and it seems to just be getting worse with age. He was a terrible alcoholic when I was a child, a wanna be Elvis (as far as abusing prescription drugs) when I was a teen, and now he’s exposed himself to the exciting life of a coke addict/pot head. Did I mention that on the side he is abusing the Workman’s Compensation system? It is really a shame that in his case, stupidity is not a phase but a permanent resident in his personality.
Growing up as a child, I only have memories of him drunk. His intoxications sponsored by Coors Light. He would constantly pick fights with my mom. He’d scream at her using alcohol as a personal gateway to express his frustrations he was having with the marriage. I remember my mom trying to leave the room to get away from him. Carrying the responsibility of being sober, she was sound enough to know that 1 a.m. was not a good time to be screaming at each other. I remember shutting my eyes to give off the impression that I was asleep. My mom would tell him that he was scaring my brother and me and he would claim that we were asleep. I just wanted to avoid any excess confrontation with him. When he would leave our room after an attempt to prove my mom wrong about us being awake, I would go back to pressing my ear against the wall listening to everything going on. I was always terrified of him hitting her. I would sometimes just wait for that moment when I could hear the sound of his hand making contact with her face. What a man, huh? It wasn’t until a routine checkup that he discovered Hepatitis C in his liver that forced his drinking to come to a halt. That is when his doctor would become his new best friend.
Prescription drugs became a problem as I reached puberty. My father caught hold of this prescription drug dictionary that started a new drama for our family. The book would list the drugs, the effects, and what they are used to cure or help with certain health problems. He studied it like a college student studies for an exam. He would approach his doctor with a problem he read about and the pen would start flowing across the prescription pad. My father is probably the sole reason that our local Walgreen Pharmacy has been able to keep up their business. He started with Vicodin then Oxycontin, Dilaudid and Percodan. There are probably more to add to the list, but those were the only bottles I found in his room to help the paramedics know what they were dealing with when he overdosed. Yep, that’s my pa! He’s overdosed about five times. It doesn’t ever faze us anymore. With the third overdose my brother came home in the middle of the commotion. He had a friend with him. I informed him with what was going on and his response was, “Oh, again?” and went into the house to grab whatever it was he came for. His friend was confused as to why my brother wasn’t bothered by the news. How could we be upset? My father was doing this to himself! And if he didn’t overdose enough to grant him a stay at the hospital, he swallowed enough pills to make an ass of himself at family functions. He could be found trying to blend into the background. He would be sitting with his eyes rolling to the back of his head and drool running down his chin. He is an embarrassment. I am however happy to announce that this doctor of his (who didn’t challenge my father’s self diagnosis’) has lost his practice for handing out prescriptions to anyone who wants them. It shows how smart the both of them are since drugs/pills get filtered through your liver. They are both doing more harm than good to my father. I guess with any hobby, things can get boring. That’s when some “friend” of his introduced him to cocaine and marijuana.
I have never been exposed to a real life cocaine user or marijuana user for that matter. I have only seen the characteristics of one in movies or posters. It isn’t that hard to detect the signs though. I started to notice that my father would creep around the house at three in the morning. It would be pitch black, and he would be wandering around the house with a flashlight. I don’t think he was looking for anything in particular. Maybe he was looking for imaginary monsters. I also noticed that for someone who has never had a sinus problem in his life, he cannot keep a dry nostril if he tried. There are also periods where he goes through the coke head obsessive picking stage. Some days it looked like he tore his cheek off. He can go weeks without sleep. Our walls are paper thin and we can hear him rearranging his room twelve times in one night. He started smoking pot in the house. Even with his bedroom door closed, the rest of the house would be filled with the aroma of weed. He claims he can’t sleep without it. Seriously, who does he think he’s fooling? To give you a better mental picture, he started to keep up the attractive look that Nick Nolte tried pulling off in his mug shot. Even including the Hawaiian shirt. I don’t understand what goes through his head each day. It is one thing to be an alcoholic and pill popper; but what kind of father brings illegal drugs in the house? Not a responsible one.
He is lucky in some aspect though. With all of these drug experimentations, he doesn’t have a job to lose because of it. He has been on Workman’s Compensation for the past six years. He supposedly got hurt on his job and while recovering, was laid off. I guess it’s illegal to fire someone who got hurt on the job so he sued. He’s been waiting on a settlement forever but in the mean time was able to collect money from the state. The rest of our family is led to believe that this was his plan all along. He use to counsel my uncle on how he should get a trade job and when he gets hurt he can just collect Workman’s Comp. What a role model. It wasn’t “Hey, go educate yourself and get a good paying job”. It is “Hey, go be a loser like me and look even worse because I’m supposed to support and provide for a family that I made a decision to have”.
The parental screening committee has failed me. They should have spent extra time on my father, interrogating him with tough questions on what kind of example he was planning on being for his future children. Lucky for my brother and I, my mom was strong enough to teach us how to be compassionate responsible people. My brother and I have never touched drugs and I can’t speak on my brother’s behalf, but I’m never going to damper with them. My father is long overdue to grow up and be a man. I will never be able to respect him, I can’t even stand the sight of him most of the time. So far in my brother’s and my case, stupidity isn’t genetic. I just wish my father would grow up and try to be a better man and not a lost boy.

This is in response to Kayla Marleys earlier post...

The state of music today reflects the attitudes of the masses. People now in
this hustle and bustle self serving society are only worried about the "right now", there
is no looking forward.
They convince themselves that they have no time to think therefore the music
that reflects them best is as empty as their soul. Back when music was music
it was meant to make you think, it told stories to incite thought.
Bands today come and go because they have no substance they drop a catchy beat
and say nothing worth the few minutes it takes to get through. There will be no more
legends or icons as long as this goes on. Society goes day to day only thinkin about themselves
so music with a message is irrelevent to this generation. MusiC today is all bling and no backbone.
I leave you with this:

"Revolution in their minds - the children start to march
Against the world in which they have to live
and all the hate that's in their hearts
They're tired of being pushed around
and told just what to do
They'll fight the world until they've won
and love comes flowing through

Children of tomorrow live in the tears that fall today
Will the sun rise up tomorrow bringing peace in any way?
Must the world live in the shadow of atomic fear?
Can they win the fight for peace or will they disappear?

So you children of the world,
listen to what I say
If you want a better place to live in
spread the words todayShow the world that love is still alive
you must be brave
Or you children of today are
Children of the Grave, Yeah!"

Black Sabbath "Children of the Grave"

I kept it brief to spare your time i know you have better things to do.

Hello everyone!! i'm just here finishing up my paper and i started thinking how Mr. H told us our paper should have feeling and what not. i literally put myself in the middle of my situation again and i had extreme deja vu. it was scary but perfect because now after like 5 pages i couldnt stop writing. anyway im almost done.

On monday Mr. H made us draw what the allegory of the cave meant to us and that opened up my mind even more. even though i cant draw for nothing but my stick figure man still came alive to me. ;]]

About that post earlier by danielle ..that really got to me. it really touched my heart. i could picture the whole thing and walk the scene with her. i could not stop reading her post. it brought pain even though i dont know her. just want to let you know danielle , if you read this, that i keep you in my prayers and if theres anything you need let me know.

The homework reading really moved me. I especially enjoyed the Joy Luck Club it has really pushed me to watch the movie. To alot of people these days language is something that seperates us in a negative way. I know alot of others who are classified as having "broken english" will be inspired and motivated just by reading the words by Amy Tan.

I totally agree how you were saying that music is all about bling and no backbone. i'm sure a few could agree. listening to songs from the sixties and seventies you could hear and picture the story being told.
and now all the music is about a girl kissing another girl and a pair of jeans! i mean yeah they are totally catchy and the beats are decent but these groups only have their 15 minutes of fame and will never be remembered in the next you know 50 years.
anyways. i did read everything. and thanks for replying to my blog!!

Anyways, my paper gets harder and harder to edit. I know I'm supposed to show more emotion and feeling. But my paper is about how I learned my lesson about starting fires that burnt part of my backyard. I wasn't that emotional because my backyard already lokked horrible. Maybe I can share my feelings about how funny i thought it was a few seconds later. And how it's still funny because nothing will grow on the burnt, barren land. yes! That's what I'll do! wow... blogging helped! Thanks Professor Hsiao!

Today after presenting our own interpretations of Allegory of the cave, Mr. H asked each one of us what our cave was. With out even thinking I blurted out that my family is my cave. I thought about it afterwards, and yeah...they really are my cave. My parents would be thrilled if I got married and had a few more kids like my three older sisters. I can not be like them. I can not be susy homemaker! I need to leave my mark on this world before I leave it. MUST.BREAK.OUT.OF.CAVE.

everything in my life

I'm in love with my disease
worshiping my idle time
a life I cannot seize
trapped by depression
and I sleep all day
but xanax, valium, attavan

no loving hands can sooth this ache
so much more than a war with the world
it's my own degradation

late at night my monsters find me

I was really surprised when I read Mother Tongue by Amy Tan, because this exact issue that she was talking about is what has been on my mind for about a month now.

I've started thinking about language and how for some reason, being able to speak in correct grammar and sentence structures seems to judge a person's intelligence, and this is the event that has made me think about this for a while now.

I was at my work and there are so many Mexican guys working there, cooking and making sushi. Well, there is a sushi chef there who spoke "broken English," spoke a few Japanese phrases, and I had fun talking to, even though he had trouble sometimes understanding what I was saying. He was talking to a Japanese sushi chef who is also the manager about the hours he had worked. The Japanese sushi chef also does not speak English very well, so I saw how difficult it was for one to speak and for the other to understand. Anyways, so the Mexican sushi chef decided to use his fingers and with conviction, told exactly what he knew and was sure of. This is when I realized that he was really good with numbers and he was very, very logical. I started to watch him speak to the other Mexican workers in Spanish. Everything sounded so flawless and flowing, unlike the English he spoke. I wish I understood Spanish so that I could see his real potential and understand what he had to say, because in comparison to his English, I knew Spanish would show off his knowledge and understanding of everything a lot more.

Then I moved on to my mom. We speak English at home, and although we moved here from Japan, my brother and I speak English very fluently now. We have a baby brother now, and my mother still speaks to him in English. I keep telling her that she should speak to him in Japanese so that he could learn it a little, but she refuses. I realized, when I was growing up, I had been disciplined by the same mother in a different language. She had conviction and authority, which I don't hear or see as much when she is disciplining my brother in English.

I also started to see that my step dad had been looking down on my mom when he spoke to her. Whenever she would suggest a different side to a story or tried to convince him she knew what she was talking about, it seemed as if he had always brushed it off.
If only he could understand Japanese, I thought.

I had told my mom that exact thing last Wednesday. At first she was hurt, said that basically, I'm telling her that she is nothing. But I was doing the exact opposite, I was telling her that she is more than the ability to speak this language she had not been raised with. She knew so much, but this language barrier was making it seem as if that wasn't true.

It got so deep in my head... I wasn't intending on that at all, never do, but it aaaalways happens. I kept thinking and thinking, and when I realized what I had discovered, I didn't know what to do with all the information anymore. However, I realized that I knew I should keep up with both Japanese and English, so that I may express myself in both countries, to more people.

Okay, I don't know where I'm going with this entry anymore so I'm off. I think my head is going to explode someday.

American Socialism

Freddie and Fannie

http://www. youtube. com/watch?v=6gZuG-52js0

Let me get my situation straight before I start ranting on this issue and many others to come. I'm Vietnamese American, my parents are refugees. I'm 1st generation Vietnamese American. My comments do not in any way make me unpatriotic or anti American. I just have a different interpretation of America and what freedom is. I'm a Liberal, but more brushing on the Social Liberalism beliefs. But if you were telling me what to believe in that would also limit my freedom and that is not the American way right? Or is it?

I remember 10th grade high school history, communism this communism that, American "freedom" is great.
I'm not saying communism is good neither is it bad, I just wonder why I would be fed such a biased opinion and have it be considered history to me. Especially from a public school system in the United States of America. But this doesn't mean I'm against democracy and individual rights, I just feel like if the upper end intellects have been kinda taken advantage of us because of what democracy offers so liquid of an interpretation. Now that upper intellect is bailing a bunch of there rich cronies out from a crumbling privately owned mortgage coalition that has lost billions of dollars at the cost of us home owners (my parents and your parents) and tax payers (all of us) by having the federal government take them over. That's Brushing kinda close to what they taught me not to believe in during history.

I have many more.....

To comment on the music of todays generation... or anything on todays generation for that matter. there is a theory i have heard and have fallen in love with for its philisophical view which is this: nothing in our generation is a new creation but everything is a remake and remodel of the past. also there are so many millions of artists out there and its so much easier for their voice to be heard over the internet and what not. its not like what you stated, 20 to 30 years ago when there were so few bands and they were presenting such new styles and lyrics. alright i need to go to bed.. gotta wake up at 5! thank the Lord for coffee and my job at sbux!

why do people write so much on here, it hurts my eyes scrolling through this page.

but anyways, i read that little something about music that stephen rynolds said, he is right in a way, but if it wasnt for the internet alot of music that is out right now wouldnt be cool. Now that the internet is a powerful tool people can now sell thier music on itunes through this website http://www.tunecore.com/. so that eliminates being heard by big time record companies. you can be your own record company and make 100% of your profits. you just need your music to sound 100% professional tp sell, you get me?

also i heard this on youtube about the internet. Big companies are going to charge you for internet use, kinda like cable packages only letting you access what you paid for. its crazy, idk the whole story. but look it up.

To Nick Hernandaz: I understand where you are coming from completely with feeling like a computer. I was born and raised a Roman Catholic I even went to private school for awhile, so I know that feeling of not being able to think for yourself. I actually just broke free from it too. Now I am exploring new religions where they do not tell you how to live your life, but how to live your life happily.

Music has come a long way. Yeah most of it is trying to sell sex with stupid lyrics like “my milkshake brings all the boys to the yard” or “I got it from my mama”. It is not just hip hop that sells sex with music though so does rock and country. Not as much as hip hop, but it is to a certain extent. I do agree that the media today is filling our heads with non sense, telling us that if you act/look like this, the men/women will want/like you. But not all the media is like that though. For instance I listen to a couple of groups that do not sing about nothing meaningful. Michael Franti, Flobots and Sweat Shop Union all three of these artists tell it how it is. There are no lies, no fancy lyrics just the truth. I do not mean to put down those who like to listen to the catchy lyrics of Rihanna or Katie Perry that might mean something to you. But maybe once in a while you should think outside of the box, you know change is not always bad.

Nam Luu said...

Ok well lets continue with the music situation.

First off here are my credntials to comment on this topic.

I am a seasoned recording engineer, been recording music of various artist and genre since I was 15. Ive seen it all from the growth and the collaspe of many artist, recording labels, marketting agencys, and studios.

Both of these previous comments on music are definitley valid and true. But whats really happening in pop culture, especially music has been in development for the past 2 decades. The digital era is the catalyst for what has become mainstream culture.

fucking stupid fucking firefox took up the punctuation keys for some stupid fucking search option.

Ok well let(firefox sucks)s start.
Before the digital era, not to the consumer but in the professional realm, it was expensive and time consuming to recording and distribute music. It started with the phonograph, then vinyl, casette, cds, and now MP3. First off tape, tubes, and analog sounds better then digital. But what digital innovations has brought to the table is the ability to record music at home personally by your self. The innovations of technology has grown so fast and simplified many task that was considered an art form and natrual skill to do during the production process. Digital means 010101010111011, that means everything sounds the same, its the same format. Since the 90s the accessibility of getting your hands on recording equipment has went from hundreds of thousands to about a 500 dollar budget.

The issue:

Record labels have taken advantage of the advancement of technology so they can profit even more off the artist and take more of there money. Back then you needed a good artist, a good band, with good writting and production to make a good album. Now we have one hit wonders in hip hop, pop, and rnb. Big name producers lace up beats from there home production studios, labels hand out a laptop and a portable recording interface at the budget of 500 dollars or more for them to take home to record there vocals. They get the files back and there track gets professionally mixed, autotuned(fixing missed notes and nuances in the performance using digital software, which means a crappy singer can sound good now a days), and mastered by people like me. This cuts the cost of creating an album down to about a quarter of what they use to spend before.
This allows record labels to filter through one hit wonder artist like if they were disposables. One song, 10% to the artist for record sales, 70% for touring if they even get that big, and the labels keeps the rest of that one hit song. One hit song can bring in millions and millions of dollars, especially if it picks up contracts with marketting agencys to be used in film and tv.
No band or developing artist will ever get a chance to be on the top 500 for years like previous artist have. They get one hit, some limelight and then back to there normal life with 10% royalties of that one hit song and album that problay never sold due to pirating.

Is this why music is so bad?

Hell yes it is, and its because if you! The consumer you guys have allowed this to happen by not taking a stand and not buying the records or pirating songs that you kinda like thats why you downloaded it. No one should be giving support to anything that they feel is contributing to the downfall of the entertainment industrys standard or entertainment. Parents, kids, teenagers, young adults, you let the media control you, you let them make you think what is right and what is wrong, whats good, and whats bad. America has so much freedom that is allows the highly intellectual to exploit that freedom and take from the poor and ignorant. Working class people dont have the time to sit down and understand these issues, they get home from work and dont wanna worry about anything else, and mass media marketting knows that and exploits it. We get fed to belive more is better and less is worst. It's never about quality, and intergrity.

And if you dont know:

It doesnt take them that much effort to have us grasped by the balls and vagina. Because kids are raised today to be 1uppers, they always tryna outdo the other, to pimp some bitch, get some hoes, look cool, gang bang, do drugs, nice cars, out do the other bitch because they think they the baddest bitch. Look at how people dress, gucci, louie, designer, anything close to designer, anything that is marketting more cleverly and on a mass national scale is considered as "dope" "cool" and "the shit" A must have to impress the friends, to get that girl or guy you always wanted. Or just to plain out show off. Rich and poor they have us all, in simpler terms, they just tryna make us hate on each other so they can keep feeding us more things to buy to keep up with the jones.

How does this tie in with music adn entertainment?

Thats the first market they attack, who doesnt wanna be just like there idol or hero or someone famousn that they look up to. You wanan walk the walk, have the same watch, same clothes, same handbags, same tits and ass. No one in the entertainment industry is considered close to a hero or idol on my list, they are just pawns of a business.

How can it be fixed?

Music has always had a counter culture, or genre how ever you wanna call it. In the 60's you had the Beetles, and Pink Floyd(late 60's)Sgt. Pepper and Sauceful secrets were recorded at the same studio at the same time(Abbey Road). Thats why Sgt. Pepper sounded the way it did. In the 70s you got THE CLASH, The Clash was really the counter culture from the mid 70s until the mid 80s.
Then hip hop strolled around, during an era filled with eletronic beats filled with heavy synths and pop vocals. Rakim, EPMD, Heavy D and the Bois, Afrika Bambatta, Rage Against the Machine, House of Pain, Snoop Dogg, Dj Quik, Dr. Dre.

After like 97 the only band and artist that I can say that was able to achieve mainstream publicity and still be the counter culture was Rage Against The Machine. By this time everyone hopped on the bus and road it for the $$$$$$$$$$$. Now we don't have nothing, what we consider in hip hop as underground hip hop isnt even a counter culture, underground hip hop heads are way to biased accept becoming the counter culture, they are merely now just a sub culture of hip hop.
Its not just hip hop either, Punk has gone fucking pussy, Rock has gonna pussy. We lack a counter culture, and I see no end in sight for what is happening. The dilution of music, and an artist creative ability to write and produce what he think is music by his standards, not a jewish dude(no offense but 90% of the music industry is ran by you folks and most of my favorite musicians and producers are jewish so big ups yo but yall business are shady).

I am writing in reference to the discussion at the class today.

I believe that some women want to be desired, erotic, and famous. That is the cause for some of the scandalous music videos and the magazines where women are scantily clad.

Many people assume that women do this because they are brought up in bad household, or because of sexual abuse as a child. Rarely anyone mentions the women who came from middle/upper class families, who enjoy the luxuries which many people do not enjoy. Furthermore what about the women that do this because they love being naked or next to naked?

The arguments are plentiful, no doubt. Nevertheless this whole debate is a two way street. What of the men that are in Vogue, Playgirl, or any of the advertisements by Calvin Klein...etc? Why do they do it? Money? Who cares why anyone does it? Sex obviously sells and obviously causes enough heated debate over who, what, and why anyone participates in such activities.

Sex and nudity is becoming more open in our society (as it has in Europe many years ago) and we should just let what ever happens happen.

Now for the issue about women in hip hop, pretty much take my huge explaination of the music industry and apply those marketting techniques used to suck us in to this issue. But if you want to go deeper I can go deeper.

If you read my previous post you remember the 1upper, well yeah thats pretty much at least 80% of the culture we live in. Add sex, men and dominant male figures with lot of money that are willing to help these girls out for a quick video shoot and a train. It doesn't even matter what social class you are from, money, respect, power, fame. That's all it takes to make it appealing. Thats how we grew up, thats what we were taught and influenced by the society we live in.

Produce and sell what they want, not what they need. When you need something you'll find it, not matter how unpopular or underproduced it is. But when you want something its there, its advertised, its on your street corner, your supermarket, everywhere.

I dont want to just sound negative all the time so how about a normal comment from me now.

So what music does everyone listen to. And whos a musician on here?

Who are your influences and what is your inspiration?

Is anyone on here politicaly active? Activist? Freedom Fighter? Souther American Rebel? Tree Hugger? Green Peace? Anything but the 2 main douches of the country.

I'm a musician, i listen to all sorts of music. i dnt pay attention to all that crap they say,if they are trying to tell a story i listen. techno in its self tells a story, no lyrics or anything. r&b just talks about love and relationships, and hip hop pretty much talks about everything.

What i think might me different from what other people think, music is expression, if the want to express themselves let them, its just music, and every one listens to it.

Nam Luu said...

The production of trance is probaly the most expressive I've seen with out anything else but the rhthym and emotion of the sounds used for the track. Definitley feel you on that, and for those who listen to trance is a way different emotion and feeling when your controlling the arrangement , and sound your trying to give it.

But really thought so Souljah Boy is an expression? Ok I take that back it is a form of expression. But Souljah Boy????? Should I go on to list more that is played on top 40?

Lets break down expression

Expression Of:

Art
Creativity
Ideaology
Emotion
Pain
Struggle
^these are probaly the main six I can come up with that are most general expressions of.

Now Im tryna connect the dots to how Crank that souljah is an expression of one or more of these catagories of expression.
Then you got the rest of the crap out there to try to connect the dots to.

IT IS NOT EXPRESSION, IT IS ENTERTAINMENT.

Last one I'm done great now my punctuation keys work again. My shift at work is over no more blogging peace.

I'm starting to really enjoy blogging that if something happens, I think "I want to write about it!"

Mr. Hsiao mentioned my display picture in class so I'll explain it. You see, I really like food. So I took a picture of me with a mouth-full of food and took a picture! It is very, very symbolic. Piece of art, I might add. Yes, that's what it is.

All jokes on the side, I do eat alot (and my friends would all agree!) but I like cooking just as much. I loove baking cookies right now (I go through different phases of cooking different things) and had already baked some to take to my work! I'd love to bring it in to class one day, too, but don't count on it... hehe

I was going to write about today's class, too, but I've already used up all my funniness in those last 2 paragraphs. ahah. I'll probably blog again after eating Korean BBQ with my friends!! BYEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

Today's class had an emotional toll I think and hearing what other people had to say about their "caves" was pretty deep. It made me get to know to other people in class more than just people in the class

in class our presentation was kindof a cluster but mr. hsiao never asked what our caves were so her it be...my cave is the baseball field. in college it can determine where i go whether it be a 4 year or not. if i play well i get exposure and opportunities open. play bad and u get put on the bench. It kindof ties back to my previous blog thingy about make your own future. and hearing the danity kane song without the music video it was ok. but even with the steamy video, i have a newfound dislike for em.

This comment is for stevens earlier comment about todays music and originality. Though its true most all we see is remakes and revisions, especially in films, i dont believe bands from 20-30 years ago had no muse. nor has any individual in history simply thought something into existence. I would argue that every single life experience the great artists of history(modern and prior) influenced and led up to their works.

besides the point, its not practical to assume that just because someone said it before, means that i cant think of it again while never hearing of the prior example. in fact, ill end with an example: we all learn early on that fire is hot, but that doesnt mean we learned it from somebody else.

Classes,

Let me remind everyone that your views are your own if you are a blogging community of you, yourself, and I. Blog only your opinions and interpretations but I repeat, I repeat do not slander another's views as you have done.

I will talk more about this next class meeting. And if you look at these bloggers, you can see their voice, and it represents their true personality. I see yours--all, in its entirety.

Let me not be negative in sum, because there have been a lot of life affirming and positive blogging going on. I appreciate it a great deal. Reading about your lives and even your own blogs gives me another dimension of you--not just the professor-student dynamic, right? Thank you, all for being so comfortable in blogsphere to be genuinely honest and authentic not only to yourself but everyone here.

Give me some down time, I will respond to you.

either right or wrong, "video vixens" have become part of our modern society, accepeted by some, rejected by others it has become, sadly in my opinion, something future generations will think of when talking about the 2000's. the only way to change this can be by educating ourselves first and then younger people, why? because then we can counterargue future generations by saying "Our generation encouraged, and succesfully convinced most high school alumni to go to college, or maybe we fought for more energy efficient cars, houses, EVERYTHING. with stuff like that done, young girls wont be inspired to be the next video vixen, but the next scientist who will discover a cure for cancer, or an activist that only with her presence the right decisions will be made. we have gone too deep into this argument, thus giving more fire to the video vixen dylema, so my question is, why not ignore this and let it die out, and while we ignore it, we find better ways to make our way of living better? sometimes the ebst thing to fix a problem that feeds on attention is to ignore it and let it die. video vixens have had their 15 maybe 16 minutes of fame already, so qhy cant we just move on and start dealing with serious subjects.

ahem. i'm excited to go to the Museum of Tolerance! I personally LOVE WWII related stuff and its always good to learn new stuff about it. As a relative of someone who escaped Europe in the late 30's i cannot help but wonder what if they wouldnt have never escaped?

now my final words, when mr. h asked "what was our cave" i lied when i said i could not think of anything, but some reason the blog is a better to say things, anywho here it is:
My cave has always been drugs and alcohol, I've always been in and out of them, relapsing every couple of weeks, making promises to dear ones, and crying and crying. Drugs have always been in my life, since i first tried them back in 2000, this has been the darkest "cave" i have been in. and this past March i decided it was enough, after hearing a song that said "yes the body is weak, but the mind is stronger, it controls the body, you are not a salve" i knew it was time for me to break free of my cave. the first days were the hardest, mood swings, chills, hyperactivity, depresison, in a week i experienced a lot of emotions, yet i stayed away from drugs. 6 months later i am still drug free, i get cravings from time to time, but i remember these lyrics "yes the body is weak, but the mind is stronger, it controls the body, you are not a salve" and i get back on my feet and move on with my day.
thats my cave, ive been out of it, but im still not far from it.

2 more days!

Hey everyone!
I know its really late. and I should get to sleep considering the fact that my class starts at 8 in the morning tomorrow. But I just finished hitting the books studying for my exam tomorrow. Im so sorry I was late to class I was hoping to catch some study time in the library. So I went checked out a book and sat in a little stall in the study room. I reviewed a little, looked at the time and decided to put my head down for a good five mins. The next thing I knew my friend tapped me on the shoulder. I picked up my head and my friend laughed at the fact that I was sleeping in the library. I felt really stupid when I said I just put my head down. Turned out what I thought had only been 2 seconds was half and hour I looked at the time once more and only thought one thing HOLY CRAP IM LATE! 20 MINS LATE! Sorry for that but at least I made everyone laugh...

Anyways

I came to check if anyone commented todays class. This morning when I came online to check there was only 70 something comments. Expecting to see maybe 80 I was surprised to see 113 comments. Alot of people talked about how they enjoyed the class. Its not like any class Ive had before.. lectures, papers, read and thats it. We really dig deep within and speak of our lifes and it really brings something to the class. I look forward to Monday and Wedensday ;-)

That is what I came on here to say as well. Everyone did really good on there presentations. and almost everyone had a touchy story that made me feel like I knew them just alittle bit more. Everyone had things in common and can relate to also everyone in the class. When the girl was talking about her mother being disabled I knew how she felt. My father was injured at work and his best friend working right beside him was killed. I am lucky to have my father here today. I was forced to get a job waitressing at 14 and my checks went to things I needed not wanted the light bill, gas, and food. My mom worked two jobs and as growing up she was a nurse pulling 12 hour shifts so she was never really home. After my father was injured she took nursing grayyard and working at the schools daytime. Now with the help of my syblings she got to take the summer off and now only works at the schools. I worked, went to school, and with a permit got my license at the age of 15 in a half. (I'll write more about this in a blog but wont start it til next time)

Also alot of people talked about having family in gangs and losing them to gang violence. I can honestly say, sad but true, I have been to more funerals in my life then partys. I have lost uncles, aunts, and 6 cousins alone to gang violence. 3 cousins to car incidents. and other relatives to other cuases. I have lost 4 cousins and 2 uncles to prisions and all now have found god and peace within. And many others to Drugs even though they are not gone premently you might as well say they are. My moms side of the family were part of an italian gang and being half italian Im not proud to say that about my family. (I'll also write about this)

seeing how we all related to one another was really a good feeling. Even though we are different on the outside we have similar experiences and can relate on the inside. No matter what your ethincity, age, or gender is. W are not alone and the problems we face where we feel we are alone others have gone through it before and can comprehend.

There is also something else you mentioned that I will not mention yet but hopefully soon.

Before I end this I want to say that the talk of the music is every interesting and even though my eyes were very heavy and blurry I could not stop reading everyones post. I play guitar and Piano, and I look up to alot of older music the beatles, bob dylan, john lennon, pink floyd.... list can go on..from 50s-80s... In my opinion music has gone far down hill. there is no meaning in songs or the music. Now To get a record label all you have to do is present one little clip and if its not catchy its not signed. heck with what the lyrics talk about. Milkshake or whatever just that catchy tune is what sells. No more meaning or expression. Just the tune that catchy your attention and sicks in your head like gum. thats what pop or "cool" music is all about today. just like anyhting else what where sells. We need more great artist out there to write insipring songs not nonsense.
But thats juat my opinion and you may have yor own.

well off to bed and keep writing I really enjoying reading everyones point of views.

Mr. Shiao great class once again Im happy I changed into your class. Haha you called me dollie in class that was funny but ill tell the story behind it next post!

O yeah can we still bring a friend to the trip friday. Please let me know A.S.A.P.

Thank you so much!

I am finding out that in most cases, 3rd time's a charm ! I attempted to take Eng 52 twice before this a couple of years ago and withdrew each time. I had to fight to take this class with Prof. H and it has been worth every effort ! Class goes by too fast. =)

I am not one who likes when a professor forces classes to join groups and perform group projects. They never seem to work out like they are supposed to and one person always seems to get stuck with the work. So far with our class everyone is involved with everyone regardless of which group they are in. Everyone seems to be willing to give 100% so far.

Yesterday's discussion was amazing. I love finding out that just when I think I am alone in certain situations, I find someone who is going through similar situations.

Ariadne, thank you for you comment on my post. It is hard to live with someone who is so absent in a role that requires so much attendance. I have accepted that he will never change. I just have to ride it out until I am able to break away from my household comfortably. I hope that you were just able to mentally picture what I am going through and am not personally experiencing the same.

I am excited for our field trip. I have been to this museum many times and each time I take something new home with me.

Funny thing...

As a network administrator, I find myself with alot of down time. Internet forums, surfing, Facebook/myspace seem to be in my daily routine. I'm on the computer since 6:30am till I go to bed...sad thing is, I couldn't take 5 minutes (until now...sort of an epiphany) to just add a blog.

I mean, I can spend hours answering question, and searching on the interent but when it came to the blog site...I didn't contribute.

Granted, I lost the URL to the reflectionchange.blogspot.com but, Prof. Hsiao was just an email away. Finally at 7:49am I emailed him asking for the link. By 7:58am the answer was in my inbox, just a click away....was that so hard? ::shocking::

This leads me to my point: procrastination. Every night after class I told myself, "I'm going to blog"...psssh yeeeaaah right. No seriusly...I wanted to avoid that quiz, avoid voicing my opinion in class...I really did. But my lazyness forced my weakest link, procratination.

Does anyone else experience this? Is something like 1 clip of youtube.com or collegehumor.com more important then the 4 minutes it takes to blogg (and get credit for it)???

Going on a limb here, I think this totally reflects many of the ideas in The Allegory of the Cave. We as people/consumers/students are so grid locked with other priorites we can't pull ourselves away from such virtual/material things.

As previously discussed about the "cave" that holds us back, we need to get past that. Whatever it may be, it's the obstruction to our path (path being = what ever you want it to be).

...we all have to start some where and even the little things count. Even if it is just a blogg.

Well aside from all of the discussions of class i hope that no one here has forgotten what today is? Just wanted to counterargue someones post about music going downhill. I think we can all agree there are still very inspired artists out there today. It is my belief that so called 'uninspiring' music has reached the popular niche because of its relation to most people of the world. Consider: why does sex sell? gee i wonder. so its pretty easy to see why these songs with little meaning beyond the words have become so popular. It isnt music meant to inspire. it is music meant to feed. In my opinion its a revolution of the music industry. You no longer have to have a huge message about life or the world or some deep motif. You can just be someone who likes to make dance grooves or write a cool sounding piece of music. Even the little guy with the little message can still send it down the tube. and thats not a bad thing. To a lot of people, music isnt a way of life. its something to keep the background alive while you drink or its to dance to or to listen to between destinations. So it doesnt have to be inspiring. there is tremendous inspiration in a lot of new music, the problem is theres just more bs to sort through.

I really liked the discussion we had in class yesterday. It really made me think about what is my cave and about what everyone was saying. I stayed thinking about that and i realized that my cave is my self-esteem. I always get put down easily and do not always beleive i can do things. People always say that by setting your mind to something we can do it, and that is true. So it mostly depends on how one sees it. Like me when i try something new and something goes wrong then i dont have the confidence to try it again. All of these things that i do to myself go back to when i was in 6th grade. That year was not so great and some of my class mate would put me down and i would feel bad. Ever since that year i have become more shy and never really like to try new things. Thats what my cave is and its really hard for me to forget about that past and get my self esteem up and be a happy person with myself like I used to be.

Story behind the name:

When I was little my mother had sat me in the middle of her bed while she was getting ready. As my mom was getting ready my father came into the room and took a picture of her with a disposable camera since there was only one picture left.

I dont know if anyone knows but alot of mexicans have dolls sitting in the middle of there beds or just around the house. So when the picture was developed my aunt was looking through the pictures and came across that picture my father had taken of my mother and you can see me in the background but I looked like a one of those dolls. My aunt asked my mom "when did you get that doll ive never seen it before." After my mom told her it was me my whole family was laughing that she thought I was a doll.

Being that there is 3 melissas in my family they began to call me doll but in italian. (my other twos cousins were melly and minqy). After my dads side heard the story and seen the picture they began to call me doll in spanish. And after getting older and more and more cousins almost only talked english to one another they began to call me dollie.

So thats they story behind my name. My family is all about nickname. One of my brothers nickname was Fufu becuase when he was little he would always say that and for the longest time I believed that was his real name becuase I never knew him as anything else.

so today i had to take(and fail) a quiz becuase i did not blog since my first.
lesson learned i will blog whenever i can.
probably not as much as nick hernandez though haha.
today we talked about caves again.
I think that a cave is whatever a person percieves it to be. But in a way your only cave is yourself. When i was asked what my cave was i first answered that it was garden grove. The grew up in that city and i feel like all i know comes from it. From my experiences and the people ive met. But I feel that there is so much more to life then this place. I want to venture out into the world and meet new people. I want to try new things. I want to see life through anothers eyes. i want to do so many things and yet i sit in my cave. I go about life as i always have. I say that it is my cave but its not. I am my cave. I have the choice to step out into the sunlight and see the world but i have not yet. Is it fear that holds me back? Anxiety is the better word. The anxiety of venturing out on my own. Of the possibility that what i have known to be true and important might not be that way. To see the shadows for what they truely are instead of what i percieved them to be.
My junior year in highschool my teacher taught the class a poem. it seemed so small and meaningless at the time. But for some reason it has stayed within my momory. as i have thought about it over and over again i realized that what is important to you is important because you percieve it to be.

I really liked today's lecture it was very interesting. Mr. H did mention alot of interesting stereotypes about Mexicans that people have said. I think that stereotypes have alot of truth to them but I think that our generation should not use that as an excuse to not be successful in life. I know girls that say, "Well my mom got married at sixteen so she should not be mad at me because I got pregnant or ran away with my boyfriend at sixteen". I know guys that say, "My dad gangbanged so I got to be a gangster too". I know others that say, "My parents worked in a factory all of their life and they were able to raise us so I am going to do the same". I talk about college to them or getting a better job but they do not want to listen because just like their parents they are comfortable in the living conditions that they are at. Stereotypes always have some truth in them but I think it is time for all of us in every race to make new stereotypes about our people and this time they should be more positive and honorable.

9-11 is, in a sense "drama", however it is a drama we live with daily.

I believe we should think about 9-11 and learn from the lessons of the past because history almost always repeats itself.

I've risked my life because of the events of 9-11. I've seen friends die because of the aftermath of 9-11.

I refuse to let the events 7 years ago to the day vanish into the back of some history book. I truly believe that we should be a vigilant society and act proactively vs. re-actively.

So, I disagree with the quoted comment above. We, as a society, whether American or not, should remember the lessons of the past and prevent a tragic future.

I was really inspired by our discussion in class about Sandra Cisneros today. I loved how she was the underdog in her family, namely because she was the only daughter, and was the youngest at that. I love underdogs because they don't need approval or glory from anyone to succeed. They're self-driven, -motivated,-aware. Their confidence, knowledge, wisdom, resilience, strength, and willingness to succeed comes from within. It really broke my heart when she talked about "privately wooing" her father into reading her works; it just shows her desperation, and at the same time, her hope. I love adversity, struggle, oppression because it brings out the best in people; these things put us to the test. We truly become our best when we have seen the worst. I really respect underdogs--they don't need to fulfill anyone else's expectations but their own, and they let their imaginations run wild because no one will ever expect them to succeed, anyway. If you couldn't already tell, I've been an underdog my entire life! Anyway, I'm excited about going to the Museum tomorrow. It better be good, Professor. Just kidding, I know it will be. I'm pretty sure I'm going to cry! Okay, that's all..for now. I can babble forever, honestly.

Ok, so this will be my first time blogging and seeing that im sitting in my room, in the dark and alone atm (Kinda of an insomniac, will be up for hours nerding it up a lil) I will post some creepy copypasta (I did not right his myself, just found it on other boards that got me scared :)).
Have you ever gotten a glimpse of something out of the corner of your eye? A simple movement caught in your peripheral vision. Most will simply dismiss this as a shadow brought about by a flickering candle, or perhaps a pet jumping down from a piece of furniture. Ninety-nine out of a hundred times, these people are right.

But then there's that one elusive sight. It can easily be explained by the above conditions, but something feels wrong about it. A chill down your spine, a slight pain in your side. Maybe even a complete blanking of your mind, only to recede moments later.

Should any of these symptoms be felt, there may be cause for worry. Our peripheral vision is designed to catch motion, even in the dark. This was used to defend against predators in our early days, and as with many aspects of our human nature, it has remained, but weakened.

This view out of the corner of our eyes still alerts us to danger, and although predators have dropped on the list of dangers we may face today, they still exist. Should you ever feel that queer chill in your back, try not to focus on that shadow you saw in the corner of your eye. It might be better not to see.

So I'm not sure if I'm more excited for the museum itself or the chips/donuts that we might get.

This may be the first and only time I'll be excited for something more than I am for the food there. I've had the opportunity to go to the museum of tolerance but never have been able to go :[ I've heard all sorts of things about it, so I'm expecting the good side of the rate-o-meter.

To Tyler Carniglia:
I think you will see what time it is that I am writing this, so let me just tell you how freaked out I am from your last blog.
I decided to read blogs from other people and yours was the first for today; I think it will be the last, too.
It's dark outside, inside, everyone's sleeping, I'm REALLY scared now :[ I've had one of those muscle-tightening feelings that gives me creeeeps! Now I'm going to have to stay up or fall asleep while watching my favorite channel--You guessed it--food channel!

HEY! Good Eats is on, I looove this show!

Hey everyone!!! just wanted to say our fieldtrip was awesome, even though im tired as hell. (thank you mr. H) we really got to learn ALOT.
it was really cool that we got to hear an actual holocaust survivor. hespoke on how he was able to escape before anything really serious happen to him but yet he was still there when jews were restricted from many places. (that must have been horrible). Impretty sure one of his caves was trying to get rid of that hate towards all germans, also the fear or the descicion of going back to his country. whatever it was, it was awesome.
ok i'm really tired do im not gonna write much more. just hope everyone gets a chance to go next time. =D

About the trip... WOW!that was a loooong ride back. It was so worth it though...Great experience. I have to admit it was very emotional. I wanted to shed tears at times, but didn't want anyone to know that I'm sensitive. But great, now everyone knows. That guy Rolf Gompertz had a very good sense of humor..for an old man. He was on a roll...lol...Thanks Mr. Hsiao for this opportunity=]

I would like to start off by thanking Mr Hsaio for taking us to the Museum of Tolerance. It was truly a enriching experience. Being a History major, I always enjoy hearing primary source accounts of history from people who were actually at the event alive at the particular point in time.

The Halocaust is a particularly interesting subject for me, since I'm half "Czech" and a quarter "Slav". I havent come upon many specifics of their experiences, but I do know that I had many relatives that were persecuted by the Nazi's in World War II. My grandfather's parents had relocated to the U.S. shortly after World War I. My great-grandparents never enlightened my grandfather to the reason that they left, but I would asume that they left because of post-war termoil or something of that effect. Once in America, they started a new life and had 9 children, my grandfather being the youngest. While WWII was happening, my great-grandmother would get letters from relatives still habitating the village that they had originated from. I have read some of the still existing letters out of an old photo album my grandfather keeps all of his old documents and photos in. These letters describe various happenings that you normally don't hear in history books. One of the letters is an account of Nazi soldiers stealing and raping young women from the town indescriminately. Another, accounting how when the Nazi's run out of sausage and soup rasions, they would simply steal the food out of the cabinets of homes. I have had one historian tell me that these letters were a farce and that they were simply and exaturation of the peoples troubles at the time. But dependent on what we saw today at the museum, how can you put anything past the Nazis? They threw babys out of a window into a truck to their deaths. What says that they wouldn't steal and rape while the main officers were not there to monitor their actions, or simply turned a blind eye.

I would like to thank anyone who went through the trouble of reading my historical account. I hope I have provided further insight on the subject on the Halocaust, giving an example that the Jewish people were not the only ones who were pained by Nazi's reign of terror.

The museum of tolerance was an awesome experiance that I think everyone should have at leaset once. I went in the seventh grade but never realized how many ordinary people were tortured and killed for no reason at all. Another thing that got to me was how so many people followed Hitler's crazy propaganda ideas. Its sad to see how gulable people become after such hardship. They were willing to do anything to get their country back to normal even if it ment killing millions of innocent people. THe part of our tour that hit me the hardeat was seeing babys being thrown out of the window. I just cant grasp how someone could do that and not even feel a sence of guilt.

Wow, I'm already on my fifth blog. I can't even remember what I've been writing about..

I have mixed feelings about the museum trip. I thought it would be more like an emotional trip, rather than looking around looking at artifacts. I thought it would be more like reading a novel, a story about the Holocaust (like Night) rather than reading a history text book. Maybe it's because I already knew a lot of the information given to us and I felt that not enough of the cruelty was emphasized. On the other hand, it was a very educational experience and I appreciated that.

It's hard trying to express sort of my disappointment with the museum without sounding rude or sounding like I didn't appreciate all that was there, because I do. :\

I wrote this post over and over again and still think that I could've said things differently and more precise and more correct.. But I think this is how I should post it.

K, I'm off. buh byee

Thanks again to all the students that were able to come up to the Museum of Tolerance. There were a lot of detours along the way up and back down because of the accident in the beginning driving up to Los Angeles that caused us take the 10, and side streets to Pico, and the Friday afternoon traffic that made us take side streets again to the 105. I am sure you commented on the Los Angeles housing and people and how fortunate you live where you live.

All in all, the transportation was an adventure to say the least. Our bus driver, Mr. King, was definitely a king of driving. We were driving on air because he was constantly adjusting the air suspension for us, so we were totally comfortable. Also, I did not want him to lose his concentration because he was the one driving the bus: Jazz it was and jazz it was going to be. I had no qualms.

I believe most of the students are still recovering from the trip. Thanks to those that said words of appreciation and gratefulness. There is much to be appreciative of. To the student(s) that expressed disappointment, well, not everyone is going to like the experience of the Tour and even the guest speaker, Mr. Gompertz.

Mr. Gompertz, a UCLA professor, talks to like he lectures similar to a University style teaching. For those going onto the University of California system, get used to it. Dry, little student interaction, and monotonous, perhaps, but he survived the Holocaust. He can teach anyway he chooses.

Thank you Brenda for standing, and the other students who did so after at the end.

Thanks for the insightful comments and questions by Sebastian, Mark, and Amador. Very serious ones

The Tour was innovative was it not? A couple of you told me so...The sets they designed were made out of many different media and there is only one place that we could have seen it all?! MOT

If we had more time, there was an actual Anne Frank letter/artifact she wrote before she died that the Museum had on the other floor. We also, if we had more time, moreover, we could have seen Tim, the reformed Neo Nazi I talked to you before about. His story is revolutionary, and his perspective one of kind like Mr. Gompertz's. His is just more contemporary that is all.

Did you listen to Dorothy, the other Holocaust survivor at the end of the Tour? She being the youngest out of her family and that she believed that an angel, no she corrected me once, angels were looking out for her--that is why she is still here. She like Mr. Gompertz is so young in spirit. Wow. She said that she would be willing to speak to us. Let me look into that.

Did you not all see how Mr. Gompertz was so young, huh? I just hope that I am still teaching upright and not "horizontally" at 81! That is why I asked him that question. Ha ha. I talked to him after, and he was so kind and down to earth. One would think after writing books, professoring at UCLA, and speaking everywhere that he would have a big ego--no, he thanked me for bring all of you up here to see him. So kind

I learn from example, and I respect his purpose to serve and educate those that no little or nothing about the Holocaust. The fact that he would go to his hometown and read his speech in German shows what a great man he is and was for seeing within himself how he can forgive but not forget the Great Fire that consumed his peoples. I have nothing but respect for the man.

Also, thanks to the students who took time to write to the 9/11 firefighters and police(wo)men. Some of you showed me what you wrote and it was touching! All of you, it was a nice gesture, and it comes the day after that day 7 years ago. There was extra incentive to not have to write as Nick said, but you would have done it anyway without my say so. I know this: I know they will greatly appreciate your kind thoughts and prayers. Thank you again.

9 to 17 million Holocaust Victims

In sum, at least 9 million to at most 17 million peoples were killed in the Holocaust.

500,000

Germany only had less than 1% of Jewish people, roughly around 500,000 Jews, that were sent to concentration camps.

Who were the Victims?

Among them, homosexuals, gypsies, disabled, Polish, Soviets, Slavs Jehovah's Witnesses, Romanian and more people were included in the Fire.

Ghettos

Those not shipped to the camps were housed in the Ghettos. They were left there usually 10 to a room to die of starvation and disease--usually there was no bed and they were lucky to have one. Heroics of the Warsaw Uprising pitted the remaining Jews against the more armed Germans--one knows who won ultimately.

Ironically, they exterminated more Jews in other countries than their own. Lithuania had 90% of its Jews killed.

Mass Killings

The killing of 300,000 people in four separate mass killings involved rifles and grenades only. One can imagine the blood curdling screams and slow death of those who were not killed instantly but slowly bled out. People were buried alive and some were able to dig themselves out of their mass grave.

It was not uncommon to see the German soldiers with pieces of brains, guts, and/or other bodily substances on them after such an extermination.

Concentration Camps

Each concentration camps was responsible for killing 4 and 1/2 million Jews by gassing. Out of the eight camps, taking the mean, each camp killed on average of 1/2 a million Jews.

Gassing

A gas chamber would hold 200 people at a time and some camps had 10 chambers thus killing 2000 plus people at a single gassing. It took at least four hours to remove all the bodies, so one can imagine how round-the-clock mass gassing took all those lives 24 hours a day during the peak year of 1942 where almost 3 million perished.

Entire train loads of people were sent to die.

In many countries, the Jewish people were extinguished at such a rate that many had less than 10% of the population left. The average ones were at 50% of Jews left.

Close to 6 million Jews were killed putting the other 3 to 11 million as those other peoples killed.

(¯`'·.¸(¯`'·.¸(¯`'·.¸(¯`'·.¸(¯`'·.¸***These were some of the highlights of the Tour for those that were not able to come up.***.·'´¯)¸.·'´¯)¸.·'´¯)¸.·'´¯).·'´¯)

These are two of my favorite Holocaust quotes:

Those who do not remember their past are condemned to repeat their mistakes. Those who do not read history are doomed to repeat it.

Here also is the quote that Mr. Gompertz said

First They Came for the Jews

First they came for the Jews
and I did not speak out
because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for the Communists
and I did not speak out
because I was not a Communist.
Then they came for the trade unionists
and I did not speak out
because I was not a trade unionist.
Then they came for me
and there was no one left
to speak for me.

i liked hte idea of writing to our firefighters and police personel, we might not like the police but they work their behinds off protecting us, any who, this is what i wrote on my card:
(on one side) Thanks for keepin our boys flyin'
(on the other side)you are the true american hero, yes you, not G.I Joe

If it sounds like i didnt think about what i said, well i did, the first phrase is a variation of a popular phrase during WWII and yeah, thanks our courageous firefighters and police people we dont have to worry about most things, so in perspective they do keep our boys flying. and the other one, we have a society where we appreciate things more than we appreciate people. G.I Joe, a toy, and i am guilty of this, i would look up to G.I Joe rahter than a firefighter, or a policeman, we assumed people in uniform were modeled after those action figures, yet its the complete opposite. and we saw this when many of us watched the news this past friday, we saw firefighters and police officers pull people out of the wreckage, even neighbors joined and helped doing what they could. Just like in the Museum Of Tolerance, ordinary poeple, doing extraordinary thing, those are the true american heroes, those who risk their lives and go above and beyond.

I agree with that, however it wasnt the foot soldiers who decided to do this, it was the upper ranking officers, and this has always been sort of a controversial subject. many of those foot soldiers that survived claim that they were only "following orders"So what are we supposed to believe? that they are not guilty? they were following orders, and non compliance to such wouldve resulted in their own death, so how are we supposed to lok at this? can we assume that they followed orders because they wanted to live? survival of the fittest lives within our bodies, just waiting for a moment in which we have to choose between our live or someone else's. I sadly, can't find the answer to this question yet, who is the real culprit? those who made those despicable acts happen? or those who ordered them to happen?

I’m very sorry for not going to the “MOT” last Friday w/ you guys. The reason for me not going is that I have a very important mission in life. I have to bring the meat to the table here at home. My Dad used to say” once you become a father you must become a provider”.
The way things are today. It is hard to miss even one day at work.

Guess the author for the following quotes:

1-Knowledge speaks, but wisdom listens.

2-For every dark night, there's a brighter day.

3- A friend is someone who gives you total freedom to be yourself.

4- Ability may get you to the top but it takes character to keep you there.

Answers:

a) Tupac
b) Jim Morrison.
c) Jimmy Hendrix.
d) Stevie wonder.

Thanks,

Well i know youve all been waiting for my post so here it is:
first off i would like you all to know that i am ussually a very emotional person....but when we were at the MOT i couldnt cry....not because i wasnt affected by it but it was so overwhelmingly sad that i couldnt even find the words nor the tears, i was so shocked and appalled at the fact that something like this could happen...My old teacher whom i now consider one of my best friends is jewish and i couldnt imagione just letting something like this happen to her (or her family which i have met and adore) without taking some action standing up for those who no longer have a voice.......all i could imagine was hearing the screams and cries and i was just soooooo overwhelmed......i was so affected that i couldnt belive how some others fell asleep on the speaker

John Hsiao said...

One of the best things about all the classes not to mention the races and socioeconomic groups meeting for the field trip for the MOT and the experience, but possible hookups, right Anthony?

There were students who went to Cerritos that knew students who went to Cypress and vice versa. That was the best thing--seeing that" Oh my goodness, I did not know you went to that school. How have you been?."

Awesome!

I loved hearing my students talk to each other about all myriad of subjects under the sun on the bus ride there, during the Tour (when they should not have), during lunch and in between going to see Mr. Gompertz, and on the drive back:

The courtyard where we ate with all the names of the departed in Hebrew was really cool. Funny that the wall was there and just inside were the names of the fallen 9/11 heroes. Heroes and fallen everywhere--one more than half a century ago and the other 7 years prior:

The scene of everyone mingling and chatting--There really was tolerance going on! Stereotype or no stereotype, different clicks were talking to different peoples.

Inspiring really.

I second what you say Thomas in terms of you being a gentleman and clapping and giving me thanks. I thought of Mr. King and how he drove us so expertly through the by ways and highways of Los Angeles.

Even Robert the agent for MOT was ducking and weaving because of all you guys and accommodations we had to set up. We had so many students that we could not fit in the auditorium for Mr. Gompertz and had to be seated in a completely different building outside of the vicinity.

Crazy.

Tierra, you talk about how overwhelming it was. Like I said before, students may have fallen asleep through the whole Tour and even the guest speaker--during the entire trip actually--personally, I do not understand because if you pay attention you can see the spaces between what time and life bring you. If you pay even closer attention, you will understand that all that happens is for a reason. I am getting too philosophical about it, but I am glad you said what you said because I was even contemplating am I the only one who was overwhelmed? The Holocaust is a lesson that we need to learn from to never repeat again.

Knowledge is only significant if it is remembered, applied, and a cause of change.

You paid attention and that is all I can ask.

You and Thom both did and others.

Tell me what else did the others learn?

Ahhhhhh and Anthony, I will tell you about the possible connection privately if you do not mind. Sensitive issue

Funny, that you talk about that versus the MOT trip itself.

You were not asleep were you?

Just kidding

Hello everyone
I was here doing my math assignment but i couldn't help noticing how many people were blogging about the MOT trip. Since i get my emails to my phone, i read pretty much every post.

I noticed everyone pretty much had an emotional or impacting experience. Whether one was horrified or just in awe of the cruelty that came to pass not to mention still goes on in our world today. (ex. sudan) Like Brenda mentioned, the part about the babies being thrown out the window was what really got to me as well.Especially since i want to become a doctor. it horrifies me to think that the doctors back then would actually use there practice as a cruelty instead of a help to others. a vow they took when they became doctors. ugh! just thinking about it disgustes me.
I ended up taking my mom with me on the trip. since she had gone to the museum in germany,i thought she would like to see the difference here. though she loved the trip, she did say everyone needs to see the real thing in germany.
i had always wanted to go to this museum with her but we never had the chance till now. Thank you
Mr.Hsiao. My mom mentioned how you appeared so young ,yet she told me that you were a great teacher without even knowing you. since the first day of class i've known that i would learn something from you. hopefully you get to teach whatever class i need to take next.
hopefully we have a few more of these trips.
oh yeah and your girlfriend is great. :] i didnt know who she was until like the moddle ofthe whole day LOL... anyway she has a great personality and just by looking at her i can tell shes a strong character. You guys look great together.
Alrighty then i have to finish these other assignments.
Goodnight everyone :]

so im probably a little late on this post but meh....

being able to go to the museum of tolerance was truly something else. i remember learning all about this stuff back in 8th grade but it was soon out of my head as i graduated jr high. now that im able to learn about it again, i dont understand how i could push something that happened that was this extreme out of my head. i guess i was just young back then...i didnt really know wth was important...i still feel that way now. but not when it comes to certain things like this.

its still hard to process that MILLIONS of people died. MILLIONS. what the hell...its shocking to think about. sad.
it made all of my problems look insignificant.

after we left the museum i was thinking about it on our [long] ride home. and as we were going through la. it just made me feel so grateful to have what i have.
i saw a dog that looked filthy and malnourished. i felt so bad for it. it just makes me realize that i have alot. and i should be very thankful for the life that i have.

thats basically what it comes down to for me.

im thankful for what i have.SO thankful.

oh yes,also.. thank you prof.h for the donuts, chips, and soda that you provided in the morning. i was really glad to eat something before i went onto the bus because i wouldve been focused on my stomach instead of the actual museum. so yah =] thx again.

also...QHQ due. tuesday..right?

that is all...gnight..

I really agree with what Darla said about hip-hop. As a HUGE, HUGE, HUGE hip hop head, I am only a fan of raw, quintessential hip-hop--witty lyricism; simple, but alluring beats; social awareness; profound messages. Cheap, overly sexualized, overly produced (Pharrel's fault) music is the opium of the masses. I’m going to admit that I dip my feet into the mainstream every now and then just to get a taste of what today’s rap game is about--which is mindless, shoddy, simplistic rhyming that even Dr. Seuss wouldn’t consider putting in his books. I’m just as hypocritical as the next person, I gotta say. Lupe Fiasco’s “Dumb it Down” pretty much says it all. Youtube it!

Sometimes I'm truly discouraged by today’s frontrunners like Kanye, Jay-Z, Lil Weezy, and T.I. I mean, we all know "no one on the corner has swagger" like them, but do they have to repeat that on a M.I.A. "Paper planes" sample beat like a million times? We know, we know…you’re the shit and I’m not, you have a lot of money, everyone wants to be like you, and your “gangster shit is hereditary” (T.I). Why don't we rhyme about poverty, oppression, the recession, politics, etc? OH, because no one will buy those records and Apple would have to shut down iTunes indefinitely for negative revenue. Jay-Z said "Forget talkin' about the recession; that shit's depressin’", and I was truly disheartened. Yeah, the recession's depressing, but come on, LIFE is pretty depressing, so we might as chop it up and try to work things out, should we not? Also, I absolutely loathe P. Diddy, Sean Combs, Puff Daddy, whatever you think you are, dude. He has no balls (pun intended) to admit he’s gay (disclaimer: I love gay people and have gay friends and relatives--I have no hostility towards homosexuals at all), he can’t talk right, and his music is weak as hell. Bad boy for life? I think not, you pretentious, smug, sorry excuse for a hip-hop “entrepreneur”. Public Enemy #1? Hell, yes.

Anyway, please reconsider listening to radio stations like the beat, kiis fm, power, etc. I recommend Lupe Fiasco mixtapes and albums, Tupac, Nas, Jay-Z's mixtapes (not commercial albums), Common's old stuff, Kanye SOMETIMES (Love Lockdown is disappointing and lack-luster). If you want to completely excommunicate yourself from anything mainstream, there’s always Jurassic 5, Freestyle Fellowship, Binary Starr, Talib Kweli, Mos Def, etc. to fall back on. The list goes on.. I'll burn you CDs if you really want. Hahaha.

Chris Brown croons, “Stuntin’ is a habit just gotta have it”, but I would much rather say, “Frontin’ is a habit, I just ain’t havin’ it”.

Anyway, like I said before, I can go on about anything..especially hip-hop. Alright, I think I'll save the rest for another day.

DON’T BELIEVE THE HYPE!

I'm shocked at the fact, "students may have fallen asleep through the whole Tour and even the guest speaker..."(Hsiao).

Talk about trying.

The museum was full of so many artifacts, stories and knowledge, its seems near impossible to let your mind wander. Someone really must have been trying to be lethargic...

On another note, we should be learning from history right? Preventing things such as debt, war, power etc. Something like 9 Trillion is it?...The U.S. is in debt.

Check this out:
http://www.brillig.com/debt_clock/

Hmm sounds like we're leading ourselves into ANOTHER Great depression. If any one is into the stock market, you might want to look at todays headlines. Lehman Brothers is filing for bankruptcy while Merril Lynch Co. has sold its self to B of A.

Thats all...

John Hsiao said...

David, we are heading to the next Depression. United States is in denial and so is the rest of the world. Trillions in debt...who must we thank but our own commander-in-chief. I will not get political. Good observation. Bring them up in class because you have good standing knowledge of current affairs, crooked events or the turn of events.

Adolfo, thank you for adding another dimension to the quotes. I might take your idea and run with it.

Samantha, thanks for your thoughtful comments and your take on the MOT. I am glad that you had more of a revelation this time around. It was nice meeting your boy friend as well.

Ariadne, Thanks for bringing your mother. No wonder, that is where you get your youthfulness from and also your character inside and out. You both look like sisters. Ha ha. It was funny when she asked me when everyone was having lunch, "Mr. Hsiao, do I have to fill out a card for the fallen men and women?" I laughed inwardly as I said, "Of course!" Cute

Thank you for your endorsement of me. I would not want to think of a class that did not have you in it as you talked about it the first week. I am glad you are in my class versus the other professor.

A couple of students have asked about the QHQ.

It is due next class meeting for Cypress only:

The instructions for the QHQ are as follows.

Q: What is my cave?

H: My cave was escaping stress through alcohol and drugs.

Q: I have 3 years sobriety because I realize that I cannot be free if I am in my cave of denial, substance abuse, and anger.

Include one quote of from Plato's Allegory of the Cave.

In Plato's Allegory of the Cave, he argues that " " (10)

(10) stands for the paragraph in which you got the quote.

The quote cannot be over two lines.

Q: First line
H: Second line
Q: Third line
Your whole entire paper answers your last and final question.

Nothing on the side--the starter dish--appetizer--if you will, and the main dish, the entree as your analysis and interpretation.

MLA Style, double spaced, and 1"
1" 1" 1" margins all the way around!

John Hsiao said...

Gabriel, also, I was thinking about what you had said earlier. We will discuss the bystander effect much more as the semester comes. I have a story about that, and it will be shocking although not as much as the Great Fire, the Holocaust.

"If you burn books, than humans are not far behind."

MOT was pretty good.
Didn't quite socialize as i should have done. Sometimes i just shut myself up. Weird how i do that.

Mr. H! That guy I took wasn't my bf! He was just a friend. Way to go!

That was funny though.

i've been going to MOT since middle school, i cant ever get tired of it. i always learn more and more, and everytime i go i get a different perspective since im growing older and whatnot.

thank you for the great trip.

i missed work, so had to lie to my boss cos hes so against school.

he's definetely a corporate monkey. so i told him i was in the hospital with some sort of sickness, hopefully it doesnt come true.

i felt guilty. but i realized that knowledge is much more important to me than +$104 that i missed.

so no more guilt..

cant wait for todays class!

Yes its me again i had to blog about today's class and i just ended like 20 minutes ago.....first off mr H. you are a true O.G. because knowledge is your weapon......and i like how today we talked about gender identity in a home where one is the minority i have two sisters but they are way older than me so therfore i was forced to be the only daughter amoung two sons and i always felt like my dad wanted me to be a boy....you know his last shot was me and i came out a girl how sad for him......but growing up my mom always encouraged me to be a lady while my dad lived in some sort of twilight zone in which i was a son.....it wasnt until we had a heart to heart that he began to see things from my female point of view. so i can totally identify with Sandra's story.....even though im not the only daughter......and thanks for the shoutouts mr. H..........finally somone recognizes the greatness that is tierra....well im off to my next class ill be blogging later before work....peace

After listening to your talk about "proper blogging etiquette", I started thinking about quotes that could in some way relate to what you were saying to us.

Then I recalled a quote from a book written by the author Terry Goodkind:

"Those who have come here to hate should leave now, for in their hatred they only betray themselves."

Interesting, yes?

I loved the MOT trip. It was a really good exhibt. Personally i thought i was going to be bored the whole time, but it kept me interseted with all the different kinds of media they used. It was strange to me to relearn all the information. I remember learning about it in elementary and high school, but my teachers never spent alot of time discussing it. So it was shocking to see and learn so much more that i did not know. Tierra i know what you mean when you could not cry or anything. I am also very emotional and as sad as it was i just could not cry. It was so overwhelming, but in a good learning way. I just could not believe that the Nazi's threw the babies out the window, something so precious to just throw away like it was trash. All in all it was an excellent trip and thank you Mr. H for letting me bring Trevor he also enjoyed it as much as i did.

I feel soo insensitive and wrong by saying the things that I said in the last post because when I read through others' reactions from the same trip, they were so moved and affected by it all. Maybe I'm too cynical.

I guess it's just that growing up, I had heard many emotional stories about the atomic bombing in Japan, because that's where I grew up. At the time, I didn't know the facts, statistics, and the actual events that took place and that wasn't what mattered the most to me. It was really the whole experience of what people had gone through and being able to reflect.
Maybe it's just that reading things touch me emotionally than having a voice tell me things.
All that I know is that I had different opinions of it and I feel that it had been the wrong one. I'm sorry if I offended anyone or made anyone think 'how could she?!'

i am super bitter that i didnt go to the museum of tolerence buuuuttt i did go back in like the 7th grade. when i went back in the day my card holocaust child ended up surviving and the reality of the whole situation is quite crazy. just the fact of a world without a person being able to pave their own way is nutz. and i got kicked out of class on thursday. = not good.

"We will discuss the bystander effect much more as the semester comes" Mr. H

okay, i'll hold on to your word, haha. this is something i have really been interested in and i would like to hear what others think. from past experiences, feelings are always different when it comes to this.

anywho, I agree with Mr. H, when he talks about the U.S and the world going into depresseion. we will reach a point in which the dollar will not be worth much in the global and national market. this is all happening in part because of the fluctuating fuel prices, which have the global market in awe. our economy has become really unstable. foreign markets have reduce invesments in the U.S and have moved to other nations. one of the big culprits is the war in Iraq, I was a strong supporter of going in and getting the WMD(weapons of mass destruction) however, all we found was rusted missiles that wouldnt even have made it off the runway. since then i have changed my views upon this matter, which has affected everyone. specially those of us who drive.

I just have to say I had a great experience at MOT.I have read books about the Holocaust, and it was great seeing everything that was at the musuem. I don't know if any of you read the book called ''Night" a memoir by Elie Wiesel. Its a great book if you guys are interested in reading about more stories of what people went through during this genocide.
Thanks again Mr. H for putting together this awesome field trip.

well i would have said something more about the MOT, but i just didn't really think about it, i wasn't ready was what i was really meaning. Professor Hsiao, wow you pretty much embarrassed me, but hey it had to happen sooner or later, right?
But what affected me the most was, seeing things i did not read in the books, as you said. Seeing thing in another point of view, like when the Jewish people had friends, just like you and i and eventually the turned against them because of Adolf Hitler's well thought out plan and speeches to the people. What really hit me was what if I were in one of the many victims shoes, and watching my mother or father, family being torchered. It really opened my eyes, I just could never imagine that happening. I actually saw with my own eyes what happened, not read it. I liked the experience at the MOT.

I will probably need to talk to you after class next time.

oh man. well im kind of quite in class, but i do want to point out that the Museum of Tolerance had a huge impact on me. i felt the pain that those poor people felt. i could not believe how cruel they where. its actually kind of hard to take in. like when i was with there with amador, we where talking about how dreadful that situation was for everyone. n to be walking around that museum looking at all the replicas of how the buildings had been blown up and the frames of how the people had to dress at -20 degrees is insane! it made me appreciate what i withhold alot more. i mean i complain sometimes about living at home. i wish i could move out and party every weekend, but i was so oblivious to how good my life is. i have shelter, freedom, and my loved ones ... those people didnt. im so thankful that i got to be a part of that fieldtrip, and im so glad i didnt miss it. looking forward to more. plus i met my new bestie Amador, and we talked forever and days in our lost bus that got a ticket =]

for me, it was definitely a mixture of different emotions this weekend.

this was the second time going to the museum of tolerance and i got way more out of this one. i was reading a few other blogs and i agree with them. it did really open my eyes about what actually occurred. the best part of the tour for me was Mr. Gompertz. He really had a way to grab my attention and basically paint a picture of what was going on for he and his family. after the museum, me and my friend went up to uc santa barbara for the weekend, and all we could talk about was the field trip to the mot. it may have bummed us out realizing how many people died, not too mention HOW they died, but it really hit home and made us humble for what we have in our life.

on a lighter note. ucsb..
imagine trick-or-treating on halloween combined with waking up christmas morning and the excitement you had for both as a kid..

now picture every other house in the neighborhood having a party with some brazilian girls .... ANNND im going to stop there cause i do not want my blog to be deleted by mr. h hahaha but seriously sb was really cool, there were some pretty amazing bands playing.

excited for class tomorrow! see everybody there

oh and PS for those of you who were complaining about the driving. beat this.
2 hours getting to the mot.
+
mapquest getting us lost to get back on the 101 causing us to drive through rush hour traffic on side streets throughout la.
+
4... thats right FOUR hours in traffic
+
countless driving throughout the weekend.
+
another 2 1/2 driving back home last night
=
way, way, way to much money spent on gas.

I wish i could have gone to the MOT, it sounds like it was a great experience.
An experience i learned tonight was to make sure that the text message you compose doesn't go to the wrong person. Especially if the words weren't too complimentary to the unintended recipient.
Well all i can say is, lesson learned.
I'm an idiot.

Hey everyone. I just wanted to say that going to the Museum of Tolerance was a great experience. Even though it was my second time going i had a much better time then the first time i went. Reason being is that i got to meet a living survivor from the Holocaust ,and that i did not remember much from the first time lol. Well laterz X ).
