English 52, 60, 100
FORMAT:
When you blog, in the Title, write your first and last name as you would as if you are turning in a paper to me. Then you do not have to write my name because I know you are in my class. Write what English class you are in whether it is English 52, 60, 100 and what College.
For example, one would write:
Yue Hayes
English 52
Cerritos College
Post #1
Homelessness
In addition, for the title, pick the topic of discussion, grammar/organization, content, current events, pop culture or literature as a TITLE that we have discussed in class. Write the posts like this: write #1 Post or #2 Post or Post #50, so I can easily keep track of them and how many you write.
Of course, you are welcome to write more than several posts, and in doing so is another form of participation and does count in the participation grade. Perhaps, in class, you may not participate all that much but in the realm of the blogosphere, you can from the comfort of your own home,
- reflect on the day's class discussion or offer up an insight that you found particularly interesting, etc., etc.
- How does it change the way you think or thought before on the subject?
- What actions might you take in the future? Anything is open to interpretation.
Of course, I need not go on and on about being respectful towards your peers' opinions and beliefs. If you disagree with another student's views be discreet about it: Do not say so and so is completely wrong because of this and that. Instead, say, I disagree with so and so and here are the reasons why I do. Go after their evidence and support and do not, I repeat do not attack someone else personally. This is supposed to be a forum for everyone to share their ideas and views.
*I will enforce the blogosphere by either deleting your hard work, making an example out of you here in the realm of the blogosphere or in class* . . .

The Great Debates are done with the first phase (at least half of all the groups went in most all the classes with an exception), and the second phase will be done in due time when the week finishes---out.
Nation Elects First Black President is the title of most if not all major web pages I look up.
Thank you for all those that voted!
Your voice was heard round and round the nation.
Proposition 8 is still too close to call, so we will have to wait a day or so to find out.
The decision here bears tremendous resonance to those other states that look to California in terms of legislation and rights.
It should get interesting in that regard.
Good work to all the debaters out there and ones anxiously prepping for the the big day!
It is funny how the debates and the topics deeply coincide with some of the propositions and ballot measures is it not?
Hhhmmmm. . .
Mr.Hsiao I think that you did the debates on purpose but their fun and we learn to expand our minds btw great stories you made us read very interesting cant wait todiscuss them in class.
(¯`'·.(¯`'·.¸(¯`'·.¸(¯`'·.¸ .CONGRATS YUE!!!¸.·'´¯)¸.·'´¯)¸.·'´¯)¸.·'´¯)
All those that got us here as well!
Perhaps, no more debates, Yue, but there may be other presentations in the works--you will have to see!
However, this is the final stretch.
Pack it in and hold on tight because we are almost there: We are almost done.
A couple weeks until Thanksgiving, and then a couple weeks after that, and Wallllaaaaaahhhhhhh, Christmas is upon us.
Presents, presents, and presents. . . a new stressor, but that is not what the Holidays is really about is it?
Rhetorical question. . .
Absolutely, Claudia,
I do not know what you are talking about, perhaps?
You were going to tell a joke?
For those that have voted, hold onto your .·:*¨¨*:·.I VOTED.·:*¨¨*:·.stickers.

Mr. Hsiao. President Elect Barack Obama is only half black. It is a big step towards the future, but he still is half white. =D
Josh,
Excellent work as the Moderator for your team.
Excellent
You did a great job!
Yes, you are right.
I will take that.

Thanks Mr. Hsiao. I appreciate the comment. I just felt like saying the half white part, because loop holes are fun to poke around in and find. I look forward to the debates in class tomorrow. See you then
Thank you, Josh.
You really did do a great job
as
well as others.
We can still think about those that win in each individual class and what not challenge other classes championship Master Debaters, but this is but an English class after all.
(Sigh)
No I was not going to tell a joke it was Jessica I thought it was hilarious.
And the stories I mean of the Separation - encounter - return by Richard Rohr from wild man to wise man and The way and its power by Lao Tzu (1934).
I also liked the idea you came up with debating with each other winners vs. winers until their was one from each college then each debates for the all time title then you burst the bubble with saying everyone stays w/each other as in college wise
Right, Claudia.
Ahhhh, those deeply spiritual readings with kernels and kernels of wisdom waiting to be unraveled.
Yes, I agree too.
In the realm of imagination, a utopia resides.
Thanks for the clarification.

So I read the way and its power. This explaining some of the stillfullness of mind is one of the first steps in becoming intune with the universe that the 'Quietness' of the mind is able to create a mind within mind. The power over the chi is by achiving a clear mind a deeper or Higher conciseness. It also speaks of how the power is achived though the act of least restistance. In away its better to fallow with the power of the energy of the universe then agaist it. Though the one thing it doesn't speak on the Yin which is the active energy only of yang the passive. It also talk about Chi being the power and infinite well inside but only when we become in tune do we achieve the power to pull from that well.
James,
You should talk more about it since you are the one most steeped in philosophy in that particular class.
Shed some more light if you have time on what is the Tao and how one achieves the ultimate Chi?
Just possible points of departure. . .

It looks like prop 8 will pass. HOW MUCH OF FARSE IS THAT. People of California Care that much about much people love each other instead of caring about other things. Yeah this is great we want to take away the rights of people who HAD them. Well people it looks like one step forward and
One step back.
this is poem I feel like right now but it was written a fairly long time ago
Where’s the justice
It’s lost all its luster
Polish her and maybe we won’t abolisher her
The end of it all is all flustered
Now Can I believe all the Lie of the hill on which many of gone to the great Chill
Trust, not me when I can see the Lust in the there eyes
We fight or we say we do more lies to cry about
Their fear from are leers not so
They all expect us to be dumb and drink shitty beer
Where the Justice
Maybe it’s been all hushed away
Cussed away by those who beat a man in dark room
Loom in this Gloom no light from great lady justice
She been bound and gagged left to die
On the great capital Hill high
We need to fight for real No lies
Where’s the Justice
Politics, I will not comment to that effect.
It is your personal views, but
James,
How about more on Spirituality and not necessarily Religion, but Spirituality here.
oh yeah I wrote that ^
The spirit finds truth in the teachings of the self and the master. Religion is built to help the spirit but the spirit can go beyond the constricts of any religion and gather wisdom from any where.
We often say we are a faith such as Christianity,Buddhist, hindu,Pagan, Etc.Though their is only on Spirit that extends through out all people and places- the human spirit.
I am really awake O_O
Wow, we have just elected our first african american president.
There are only a few times in my life were I have been truly and deeply proud to be an american.
Tonight is one of them.
On the other hand I DO NOT agree with prop 8. I do not judge peope that do, but I will be ashamed to be a human being if it is voted yes. It makes me EXTREMELY angry how people have twisted the campaign. I will be up all night to find out how it turns out... I will probably be asleep in class tomorow
I am open to anyone that would like to discuse this matter..=)
Well what I got out of the Separation Encounter Return by Richard Rohr
Was that people complain so much about "I want to become a better person" but yet they do nothing to become better. The fact that they want to give without having anything to offer. And how can it be that you want to be holly if you have not been in the worst? Or those who want to be great but have not touched dirt? It seems simple too be a good person but what is easier really to turn the other cheek or to stand up for what you believe in it also goes back to that story we read before I think it was Fountainhead by Ayn Rand. ok now I really lost my train of thought so I g2g because I am working on my debate for tomorrow wish us luck everyone.
Cianna
well about prop 8 i would be happy if it does pass because I have love ones who are gay lesbian and bi and if they want to get married because someone makes them happy it is no different than straight people getting married. Now like some of my fellow classmates that are against marrige for whatever reason but what I see "straight" people getting married is because it is just a thing they do its a tradition. I bet gay people and all the rest will appreciate being married more than straight. I am very sorry to hear you will be ashamed but think about it if you had siblings, friends, or just anyone you cared about is gay or whatever wouldn't you like for them to feel backed up? I.D.K. just a question and just like you said anyone is welcome to agree w/me or disagree w/me
James,
Thank you for commenting more. We will talk about this and more after the debates. . .
Claudia and Cianna,
Up late? Well, both of you need your sleep, for a full day tomorrow.
Cianna,
You commented on "How, Mr. Hsiao,
Can you have finish the debate and leave us so energized?"

You did a good job as well.
Claudia,
You are always energized.
I have no qualms about you debating tomorrow.

OH MAN! I've been studying my debate topics like mad lately. I am the Prover and the Modorater. I have a lot of information to retain. I'm probably not going to be able to go to sleep until one. Holy heck I haven't stayed up this long in lord knows how long. Anyways.. I needed a break so when I get back to the studying I can focus more. Anyways
YUE GREAT JOB ON YOUR DEBATE. ALISA WOW YOU KNEW YOUR INFORMATION VERY WELL AND I'VE NEVER HEARD YOU TALK SO MUCH.
GREAT JOB TO EVERYONE ELSE AS WELL AS EVERYONE ELSE. :)
I'm really nervous about getting infront of the class tomorrow. I don't want to mess up. OH AND the fact that Mr. Hsiao might have to step in only makes me more nervous. Like the feeling of having a hundred butterflies in my stomach nervous. Okay, I really need to go study and get to bed. Goodnight everyone! Wish me luck.. =/
Thnks Mr.Hsiao and I really hope I do good I mean Its two capricorns going head to head and if I am not mistaken Jenny will be the attacker and moderator.
James well I know and understand that I understood she is for traditional marriage and i am for same sex marriages so sorry if i cant seem to understand her or not phrasing my self correctly.
Cianna-
Unfortunately there are people out there in the world who still are not open to gayness. There are a lot of people who feel as if gay marriage should not be accepted. As we all know that the majority of the voting is the elders and that is why teens and young adults are being pushed so hard to vote. Now my point saying that if the majority is the elders they were raised very strict and gay marriage was not acceptable in their time era so they figure why should it be now? Now a days most young adults and teens are open to letting people know they are gay and they are proud of being gay, but is society really ready to accept it, is the question? Equal rights was really hard to get for the African Americans, Just imagine how hard it is going to be for the gays to get equal rights.
Just my opinion. :) Goodnight now.
WOOPS SORRY JAMES AND CIANNA TRUE TRUE i really did read wrong thnks james for catching it

PROPOSITION 8:
i voted yes for prop 8. here is why:
Proposition 8 has nothing to do with Civil Unions, which are still valid under the law for death benefits, rent sharing, and even tax benefits. So why must homosexual couples have defined marriage? i will tell you:
Under the law, if same-sex couples were to obtain actual marriage(largely symbolic when compared to a civil union), then they would be protected under descriminatory law. this means that when they want to get married in a church, and the church refuses, the couple can sue the church. Sue the church for what, standing up for what it believes? the fact is that if a same sex couple forced a church to marry them under law, they are basically spitting in their tradition and leaving it to hang dry.
This was never about rights. it was about acceptance. Why cant gays just have civil unions? everyones happy, they get monetary couples rights and traditionalists get to keep their marriage.
Being homosexual is a choice. and i for one believe we can all be criticized and disliked for our choices. Descrimination? only if you cant help it, like the color of your skin, perhaps even your creed. But a personal choice? you know what to expect when you make them.
I am all for love, and indeed they should be allowed to love whom they want. even religiously, i believe god gave everyone the ability to turn from him, and i cant take that away. But dont trample on traditions.
lastly: why would they want to get married when they can have the same rights under civil unions? like i said. acceptance. But i dont believe people should be forced to accept personal choices people make if they dont like them.
James, not a farse at all. in fact, it would be taking my rights as a believing heterosexual away. If it had passed, and i owned a church, and a gay couple asked me to marry them in my church, and i said no, they would sue, win, and i would lose my church status under the law. which means i would no longer be property tax exempt. Kinof hard to keep going when you are non-profit. its just wrong. they can be gay but to force everyone to go along is just wrong.

Mr H you should have the groups that are doing the debates to stand in front of the class and shake off all their nervousness. That would be funny and help them shake any gitters they have hopefully. But man when I heard that Obama won, almost the whole entire room i was in was celebrating and shouting for joy. They startled me haha kidding but even though im not a fan of politics, Obama is the man.

MYTH: Proposition 5 gives criminals a “get out of jail free” card.
FACT: This is political messaging, not accurate analysis. According to the nonpartisan Legislative Analyst’s Office (LAO), Proposition 5 would expand existing programs that offer treatment in lieu of incarceration, making probation-supervised treatment an option for tens of thousands of nonviolent drug offenders each year. These treatment programs include a system of graduated sanctions designed to ensure that defendants who have the potential to succeed remain in treatment and punish those who fail to meet the requirements. Similar criminal justice-treatment partnerships exist now and are widely recognized as a viable and cost-effective alternative to incarceration. Proposition 5 simply expands these successful programs.

ok first things first ...
i voted, and i felt so great about it. i wasnt going to. i was already on my way to work. but Yue came to my mind, and other people like my dad and other family members. i turned around, lit a cigarrette and drove back to my designated area to vote. i walked in nervous, and a bit frantic. i wasnt sure if i would make the right choices. so i stood there reading each prop. each little word about 2 times each. and i began to vote.
i was only stuck on 3 props. and those are prop 2,prop 4, and prop 8.
The reason i was stuck on prop 2 is because i love animals. they are not only cute and cuddly but beneficial in everyway possible. for instance, a puppy can fill a girls heart, a kitty can accompany an older person whom can not give their pet full attention, a horse can be admired by a woman who loves to ride them, a dolphin can overwhelm everyone with its beauty and i believe every animal has a person whom is symbolized by them. why torture such animals? i dont know. so i voted yes on prop 2. STOP ANIMAL CRUELTY!
for prop 4 i was stuck because it is about abortion and notifying the girls parents 48 hours before. i wasnt sure about this one. i mean, i know alot of girls make the mistake of having their "stupid woman moment" and end up prego, but is it right to notify ther parents? i mean what happens when a girl is from an abusive household and once her parents find out they beat her? some parents are understanding but some girls are too scared to tell their parents about getting an abortion. its embarrasing. (i think) and i believe that it will be harder for girls to talk to thier parents after they get an abortion. its degrading and disappointing for parents. and even though i have mentioned above that girls can be beaten if they live in an abusive household, i voted Yes to notify parents on their childs decision to proceed with such a painful and depressing situation.
NOW the good one!!!
Prop 8. Why not? ? is it because god created Adam and Eve? no Adam and Steve? well i believe that is correct. God did vreate Adam and Eve. God also intended them to not take the apple or the snake. did they listen? no Eve broke the first rule. and what happend after she bit down on that yummylicious apple? everything went to heck! God intended many things to be perfect, but HUMANS have changed that.
Why is it that people see gay marraige in such a negative way? sure it isnt something god created but how hypocritical of them to say such things. every human has a sin, some have more than others and we dont agree with their sins but do we discriminate on them? we give them chances. if people want to start pointing out that Gay marriage is agaisnt god and against how this world is suppose to be, please do tell me how it is!? is it was it should be? NOOOOO. why do people even care?
people are cruel. people are judgemental. people do not love their neighbor. people have sex before marragie. people kill. people create drugs. people lie. people steal. people are stuck up. people are stupid. PEOPLE ARE GAY! they arent perfect ... but are you? i didnt think so.
and another thing. people i work with claim that gay people choose to be gay ....
hmmm so i say this, "Really??? people whom are gay choose to be gay because they love the descrimination right? they love the feeling of being neglected. they love not being able to marry the only person they love? yeah i highly doubt it. people dont choose to be gay.
i didnt. my little heart fell in love with cherish. it wasnt an option. it was my heart telling me, yelling at me, screaming "Jovana. it doesnt matter what people think. do you feel how fast i beat when you see her? do you hear her voice poinding to me beat? do you feel the warmth that overwhelms me when she holds you?? I love her Jovana, dont be scared, ill protect you." i listened to my heart. and yes people hurt me bashed me and judged me. but knowing that my heart was fullfilled with her in my arms made everything seem like a little spec. it was meaningless. she was the only star in the sky that shined, she brightend my day, and she completed my heart.
it wasnt a choice to loose my friends because of my ex girlfriend. i loved my friends. and getting made fun of and getting called awful names was not my choice. so when people say things like that it hurts me. because they to me are ignorant.
love is about your heart, not about the people around you.
NO on 8!!
GAY PEOPLE ROCK! they are sweethearts and i love them dearly. they hold a HUGE place in my heart.
ok.... moving on.
Orlando:
Thank you! =] that was very sweet of you to say. i choked up after i said "ASS" i though i had lost for sure! lol. but thank you for your support. and i wish you the best on yours. i cant WAIT to hear it. you have some good, no not good AWESOME people on your team. strong speakers. good luck hun.
Jenny:
i agree with you. people are so ignorant and cruel at times. but thank you for standing up for us gay folk. you're a sweetheart.
Finally.
Obama won 333-175 over Mccain. he did great. but i have a concern ... this is why
According to the book of revalation the antichrist will be a man in his 40s of a muslim background, who will come out of nowhere, decieve the nations with perssuasive language, and have a massive chirst like appeal. . . the prophesy says that people will flock to him and he will promise false hope, change, and world peace. then once he is in power he will destroy everything.... the of revelations says tha the beawst will have authority for approximately 42 months (in Chapter 13) thats almost a 4 year presidency term.
at work they have these fliers posted in every room you walk into. so its making me nervous. idk. what do you all think??

Separation--Encounter--Return by Richard Rohr
This story is mostly about "...two births that are necessary to come to enlightenment (2)." We do not know how to gain wisdom on our own. We gain it from an elder and much more experienced person. The first birth is natural, basically the life we live. The second birth is when we gain wisdom and understand through either an elder or a calling. When In a sense, we are led into it and choose to understand.

Separation encounter talks about the mysteries of the bible. It talks about how the stories of the bible have meaning to them; how the stories tell of a struggle but it leads to joy, and love.
The way and its power was confusing. It talked about Chi the mind within the mind. I know about Chi from movies. i have no idea what Tao is at all.

Contestation, that is until we find our truth and even then we can prime it down to make it even more focused and circumspect, or even until we have a "clear and precise picture of it" (Frankl).
That truth eases our suffering for lack of a better word when we have found dialectically our Truth and upheld it to the light.

Today i reread Separation Encounter Return by Richard Rohr, and what i understood is that are faith is not something that you believe in its something that you learn to do and i really like that part because it is true. faith is not something you are just born with it is something that you cultivate through the years.
It also talks about two births, the first birth is Literal are actual birth. The second one is a symbolical birth it is we start to live with wisdom.

Brandon:
I hear what you are saying. and i understand where you are coming from and i will be more than glad to answer your questions.
ok lets start with this. ..
"If i choose to enter the military, am i choosing to die? no, but am i agreeing to a risk of death? yes. Its the same with being homosexual. They arent choosing to be descriminated against, but they are agreeing to the chance that it may happen.: -Brandon
ok being bisexual and coming from my point of view. its not much of agreeing with being descriminated agaisnt. i didnt AGREE to be bashed on by people who didnt know me, i didnt AGREE with being judged by everyone who heard my name, i didnt AGREE with being hurt by people's cruel remarks. its not something you AGREE with. i believe you know the way life will treat you and as hard as it might be you just cant hide it anymore. being in "the closet" is hard because you want to express yourself, you want to be with the person you care about without getting dirty fingers pointed your direction. i do not think it is much of an agreement to be homosexual or whatever the case. i knew the consequences of my actions toward my ex girlfriend would cause drama and pain, but i could not help the way i felt. i believe thats the real reason.
Like you said "if i choose the military, do i choose to die?" i believe so. its not about agreeing with it. its about knowing the consequences and doing what your heart pleads. i have alot i mean ALOT of friends and family that are or have been in the miltary, marines, navy, air force etc. and they knew there was a high chanc to die, and they knew it. All tose Marines and such go out there for their country. for AMERICA. They are proud to b americans and they are fully aware of the consequencees. but they do what they love, even when some people dont understand.
i hope that mde sence lol.
Now about the being hypocrite thing. what i meant revolves around Mr. BOB Marley's quote.
"who are you to judge the life i lead? - i know i am not perfect and i dont intend to be. but before you start pointing fingers, ... make sure your hands are clean." thats pretty self-explanatory i think. but thats what i meant. know everyone is cruel, everyone has done some wrong, but why do people who have a wife and kids or a husband and kids get to be superior then us gay people? Gay people have so much potential. we love dearly, we care deeply, and we want the best for our loved ones. im not saying we ar PERFECT because clearly tha is not the case, but we have alot of devotion.
I understand that one can not reproduce when gay, but what are you gin to do when our heart is stronger and bigger than us? we are people too, an we have rights just as well as everyone else.
you also said that just because it is love it isnt right. can i ask why? Love is one o the strongest owers on earth.
Love is what keeps us going. love is the closet thing we have to magic. so why doesnt it make it right? when everyone always states "you cant help whom you love" ... am i right? am i wrong???
Honestly Brandon, i know where you are coming from, and i respect what you are saying, but i am not the straighest line on the road. i curve, and i cant help it. i tried. and i might not know you or ever met you beforebut ill be completey honest ...
When i used to hold my ex grlfriends hand, my hand would sweat. never happened with a guy. whenher lips would slowly caress mine, my knees wuld tremble as though it was -0 degrees. ever happened with a guy. when she would stare into my eyes as we sat on the school bench, my heart would stop beating and continue once again but faster than usual. never happened with a guy. when people starred as us and whispered awful things amongst themseles, i would be hurt but she wold smile and say to forget them. i felt safe and i smiled to her. when we hugged i wear to you it felt like i could not breath. i felt as though i had been in a poolfor way to long. never hapened with a guy.
all these things that i felt for my girl where undescribable. some sound scary or even disgusting but when you feel it and witness this emotion occur . . . it is thee most beautiful feelng to with hold.
i am bisexal and i am proud. i can not help it because trust me i have tried. but its most definitly not a choice or agreement. all it is, is knowing what will happen and not caring because your feelings overcome any feeling of negativity from the world.
so hopefully i answered them the way you had hoped or wanted. if not im sorry. maybe i can explain it to you better face to face. person to person. classmate to classmate. =]
have a great rest of the day everyone!! ♥ back to work and im excited for class!!

The Way and Its Power by Lao Tzu was hard to understand. After reading it over and over again am still having some trouble with it. From my perspective it is talking about the condition are mind should be in. It says peace and stillness are good for our mind yet things like desire and greed can perturbate it.Preventing us from acheving power over outside things.

Recapping on the debate on monday. The debate was harder than i expected. I thought i was a good public speaker but when all eye are on you, it can get pretty nerve wrecking. All i can say is that the group going next is that they try and keep their composure even though it seem all hope is lost.I think thats the key component when debating.

I read the two stories and I must say they were very powerful scriptures. It is hard to write my opinion about both. They are so complex with the meanings and as well as the vocabulary. I read it twice to get the point across. Lets just say that We'll have a pretty good discussion on it today in class.... Obama Is our next president!!!! Thats amazing, and I am so glad! It is time for a change.

Although I was not able to vote because of my age, i was still very proud and excited to be apart of this historic event. The first black president! It doesn't get any better than that. Now neither I or anyone else can play the tired old race card sayin that the white male is holding us back. It is time for change and for people do get up and believe that they can do anything that they set their mind to. I see now that anything is possible and i feel as though it has made me a better person. Nothing or no one can hold me back and tell me that i can not do something. And i am very disappointed at those who chose not to vote. Those who did not can not complain if something doesnt go their way. U didnt vote so therefore you have no voice so dont complain! Because God knows if i was able to i would. I got as many people as i could to register to vote and i am very pleased with the outcome of it all. The time for change is now. Obama is hope!!! i cried tears of joy last night. It is definitely a moment to remember.

Okay. Like I know I am supposed to write about the two stories that we were supposed to read, but the honest to God truth is that I do not understand what I am reading. Someone from my class can you please help me out? I have read these stories a number of times, but it just does not make sense to me.
Briana,
These are the most difficult reading if not the hardest so far.
You will have to (re)read and then (re)repeat to get the gist of it all.
This post goes for everyone.
Briana is just brave enough to say.
For those that are disappointed about the propositions and elections, keep discussing it. This is a good forum to do so.
Juan,
Come to class!
For those that have and continue to express heartfelt well wishes and prayers for Brenda, keep them coming as well.

The way and its power By Lao Tzu talks about chi in a way that kind of jumps out and says, "i'm important you cannot live without me" sort of way. Chi is, in many martial arts, the energy a person has, that allows one to complete a task. Some have more than others because it relies on the mind, how clear the mind is and how close a person is to nature

As i read both stories i notice that they both revolved around peoples inner powers.I wasnt quit sure about the whole meaning of both stories but the message that i recieved was that everyone has their own true inner power with in them.Maybe im all wrong about the stories but this is what i gained from both stories.Hopefully, we review both stories in class.see you in class!!!!

I think that this years election opened the eyes and ears of many people. Not just African Americans, but to people all over the world. Never in my short 17 years of living, have I seen so many people interested in politics. A lot of people did not know about electoral votes and whatnot and I thought that was pretty interesting. It definitely made me more interested about politcs and made me want to be more aware of what is going on in the world. This is real. This was a huge educational experience for most. It definitely was for me.

Separation - Encouter
by Ritchard Rohr, what I understood from this reading was that we all have many different paths to go and for every their is a meaning behind it.I also got a little confused but he talkes about how there are two births one biological birth by nature and the other we choose to understand thing more. This was a hard reading to understand but something I did get from it was that it mostly talkes about religion and god. I hope today in class we get to talk aout it and i will understand it better.

I just wanted to wish every one good luck on their debait today and try not to get nerves its really hard to talk i should know also help your team don't go against them.
"all i can do is apologize. im sorry so many people are so ignorant and blinded" Jovana
What if NO would've won? Wouldn't the supporters of YES have said the same thing?
What's ignorance? Has ignorance become another synonim for disagreement? Our right might be their wrong, and their wrong might be our right.
And the end of everything, EVERYTHING we've said will only be an opinion.
What is a fact?
What is an opinion?
I ask this,
If NO would've won, wouldn't that have sparked new stuff?
For example
Incest,
Its illegal in the United States,
So, if NO would've won, what tells us supporters of incest could not have used the same argument pro gay marriage activists used.
"Love between two people"
Let me use a hypothetical example, Johnny A is 23, and loves his mother, who's 50.
Under the law they are both responsible adults.
However, they cannot get married, why?Incest is illegal. And I'm sure most if not all of us find incest disturbing. But is saying no to two adults, ADULTS that are in LOVE and want to get married the same thing as saying no to gay marriage?
What is the argument of pro gay marriage activists?
"LOVE between two PEOPLE"
I honestly could care less who marries who, but lets think about one of Newton's law, for every action there is an equal or opposite reaction. For every argument there is a follow up argument.
Lets take a min to think about this.
If we opposed incest, wouldn't WE be the ignorants under the eyes of pro incest activists?
All propositions are fishy, wether they're pro or against THEY NEVER TELL THE TRUTH. I dislike propositions.
But we still gotta fulfill that civic duty and vote.
Dictated but not read.
Oh
If you voted, I think we should thank our men and women in the armed forces.Because thanks to them Americans got to vote.
The End.
Well first, I just want to say sorry to my team. I wish I could off done better. I had everything and I knew what I was going to talk about but I got so nervous that I felt like I was going to pass out. Then I forgot everything I was going to say. It suck because we work so hard to find our information and even if I didn’t look like I didn’t know my stuff I did. Last night I was reading over and over my stuff but like I say before I get so nervous that I couldn’t even talk. It suck even more because I know most of every one there and I talk to then like what ever but that didn’t even help. Also sorry Mr. H for dropping the F bomb, is just got me so mad to read that. But anyways I just to say good job to every one!! Finally we are done.lol

hey everyone! glad debate is over. I had such a great experience comes to debate. I don't know how well i dod or poorly, but this subject had got me to think of join a debate team! talking about socialism vs. captialistm, taxing the rich vs. taxing the poor, teen pregnancy vs middle age pregnancy, and incarciration vs. rehabilitation. It was amazing listening to all the facts. Greg did a great job, Kayla hit the room run, Manh did a fabulous job, Stephen did great and got me to vote for rehabilitation. Tim also did good, and so every one else. all these facts and opinions. *two thumps up*

Good job to all of the debaters. It is tough to get up and talk in front of a group of people, friends or strangers.
If you know your material and make yourself passionate about your topic then you'll do well. Knowledge is power but passion is the key to not only getting your point across, but winning the debate.

May I share my opinion proposition 8 with you?

Prop 8 passed. I voted yes on prop 8 for my own personal and religious view. But I have heard some radical talk going on in the blog. George Carlin said there are three level of stupidiy. first there is people that are stupid, some people are full of $**T, and others are F**KING NUTS!!!!! I think if you judge people based on one lifestyle choice than you are all three levels at the same time. I understand that people are entitled to thier own ideals but thats the point i'm trying to make. Everyone has there own way of living and thinking! People have taking this Prop 8 thing as a way to damage the gay community and i frankly think thats a retarded way to thinkg! I KNOW THAT HATING SOMEONE BECAUSE THEY ARE GAY IS LIKE HATING SOMEONE BECAUSE THERE A DIFFERENT RACE. ITS JUST PLAIN STUPID! ITS BEYOND STUPID!!!!!!!!!!! I HAVE NO TOLERANCE FOR INTOLERANCE!!!
i also heard that prop 8 passed i also that there are a lot of people that are protesting it i think is kind of rediculas since it alsready passed what is the point of that. even though i voted no on that cuz i feel like if yor gonna tell kids about straight marrige they shuld also know about gay marrige. and just because they know about it doesnt mean that is going to turn them gay . and even thouhg it didnt pass there gonna hear about gay people anyway so it really doeant matter. i beleieve that people should love who ever they want no matter what and they shouldnt feel like it is wrong. but dont get me wrong i love the boys and am far from gay!! but you gotta feel bad for how people treat poeple who are different that is just my opinion.
peace out

Whats up dude!? =] hope your doing good. so here is the homework.
he gave us a sheet (front and back) with run-on's and fragments that we have to fix and turn in. if we dont then we take a really hard hard hard quiz. and then you have to read the stories from the other day.(2). and i believe they are called The Way and its Power and Seperation Encounter Return. post a blog about Richard Rohr (Seperation Encounter Return) and your understanding of the stories. if he doesnt get at least 25 posts from our class, then he will give us an extremly hard quiz (i think he wants to give us one) lol. i hope i helped.
So i'm bored and class starts in half an hour for me. Like yesterday i had somewhat of a small debate with my friend about Prop 8. It somewhat really upset me due to this called violation of "rights". In my view though, it's not about the rights really, it's more of "ARE YOU WILLING TO PUT YOUR OWN BELIEFS INSTEAD OF OTHERS?" Well before i get into dat, i wanna talk about what happened. I was on AIM and i posted like an away message saying
"CA passed Prop 8, fawk you"
yeah, doesn't really sound like me but i do. So going on, my friend IM's me and says Prop 8 has passed. I was already annoyed why it had passed and he starts saying
"Did you the Constitution protect against it anyways?"
i'm like uh huh... I dont' recall if it protects or not protects the rights of the gays but i was outrage so i was like to myself "okay, u wanna talk about LAW with this absurdness, bring it"
He lists down stuff like that the constution protects only the GENDER, RACE, and something, so on, not sexual preferences.
ME: "YOU'RE TELLING ME SEXUAL PREFERENCE DOES NOT FALL UNDER THE GENDER CATEGORY?"
i forgot how it went but i said Okay, the sexual preference counts and fits for a MALE and FEMALE, thus the GENDER tag is applied. I forgot what he said after but then he brings up that Marriage is a an institution and blah blah gays voilating dat right.
Wow, i was just like, "okay, bringin definition then, details it is". So yeah, i told the CONSITUTION never PROTECTED OR VIOLATED anything involving INSTITUTION in any place. Meaning there was never any rule or amendment that discusses about marriage within a family. Someone, if i'm wrong, tell me before i sound like an idiot ranting =/. I really don't think there is a rule book for marriage. Yes it's an instituioni of which a partnership is announced officially to lead to a family.
And yeah, we go into dat too. Discussing all 3 defintions of PARTNERSHIP, MARRIAGE, and FAMILY. NOW HERE IS WHERE IT GETS COMPLICATED.
PROP 8 was not suppose to be about rights, just plain question of "SHOULD GAYS BE ALLOW TO MARRY LIKE US?" Not, "ARE GAYS EQUAL TO US?"
Note, that the previous question is and should be YES. SO he mentions something about "OH, if you vote yes, u're telling i can dress up as a girl and go to the girl's bathroom" Dat really pissed me off. Idiocy!!!
Okay, technically the Gays can come up with another word, do a different ritual or tradition and still be fully announced they're together. Why not just give them the dam word "MARRIAGE" already you know? It's really (i don't even know the word for it) stupid on how it's viewed.
And you wouldn't believe what he said after, "I personally am against it becuz it violates my rights as a countryman to my country"
ME: HOW SO?
HIM: it violates my rights as a human being (or something like that invovling religion)
ME: (it was 12 and i needed to get some sleep, the thing keeping me awake was this guy thinking GAYs is ruining AMERICA) "i somewhat don't see how it violates ur rights, but i won't opppose of ur beliefs".
MY ass i woudldn't, he's basically saying that the GAYS are violating his rights as an american, WHY? becuz they're trying to use the american word MARRIAGE. WOW -__-.
OH, and he says "if the gays had come to America first, then they would of chose thte way for things to be run, but too bad" (or something like that)
I can assure you, i think i was winning, all he got was the dam so called "CONSTITUION" which had nothing to do with it. The way i see it, PROP 8 = TOTALLY OVERATED. The ideal of RIGHTS was applied too much and i hate to say it, but people are stupid for doing that. The media made it even worse. Schools and all that stuff.
The good news i heard they mighit appeal the prop ^__^ so let's hope and see. My class is starting soon so yeah.
PS: sorry for my typos or mispelling. If i offend you sorry, but it's freedom of speech, meaning expression (meaning any type of gender should be able to express themselves in what matter they choose)
Yeah, the guy actually said gay was a feeling "I FEEL GAY", expression? I think he contradicted himself on dat part. HA!

The reading of Separation- Ecounter-Return by Richard Rohr was very confusing, but these is what i got. It mentions different beliefs about how one becomes a hero. There has to be a call so that one is motivated to finish. There is always someone older and wiser than one that has to be there during the tough times or one might lack courage and focus. It says that the true self of one knows who it is and what to do. The true self also has the energy to do what is necessary. One will receive a return(gift) at the end of the quest. He says a great qoute that goes, "far too many of us win many battles but finaly lose the war." Poeple try and try and never seem to make it. One cannot lose if one does not give up. Giving up is the end of ones effort to make it.

Jovana,
I was not attacking you liol or attacking anybody
All I tried to do was explain how I see things work.
And why not touch the incest thing? Haha I know its mad gross, but we're starting to sound like people against gay marriage, aren't we? "Disgusting" "not right" "disturbing" I'm just trying to say that no matter what passes and what doesn't, no one will EVER be satisfied with things. NEVER.
In reality we are all ignorants. In someway or another, aren't we?
Jovana,
I'm sorry if you got the impression I was attacking your opinion. I was not.
I just took what you said in order to express my opinion, nothing else, I didn't use your words to prove or disprove anybody.
Youre a nice gal, :D smart cookie
I wanna end with this;
I live by this,
Your right might be my wrong, and my wrong might be your right. However, we all have a common ground, somewhere we can all agree on. We are yet to find it, we might not even find it, who knows, but all I know is that I'm in the search of such. I am searching for the common ground, for what puts us together. I play both roles, I am the defender and attacker, and sometimes my words get misunderstood, I tell both sides of an argument so then we can both agree that we are not different at all.

Thank you! We can totally agree on this! And I think the same thing would've been said about the YES losing and NO winning. Right?
Yes it sucks to have something you believe in fail, but isn't thata an encouragement to try even harder next time this issue is brought to the voting polls?

Big thank you to my debate team...Guys you did a fine job. Joe remember it was just a debate, things are said for the debate. That doesn't mean that person believes in it. (you know what I am talking about).
Thank you for the nice compliments from my classmates.
I have read both story's twice. I will be reading them again before the end of the weekend. I have to say the are very hard! I have an idea what their meaning is, just hard to put on paper.

i am also a christian. I would like to share some verses with you that helped me shape my proposition 8 opinion: Leviticus 18:22, 1 Corinthians 6:9, 1 Timothy 1:10. I am not placing judgement on you i just feel the need to share that with you. im sorry if that brings you pain. you were also saying God created Adam and Eve but they sinned. That is correct and that was not what God intended. He also did punish them and all of their descendants. Jesus calls us to repent and turn away from our sin. He calls us to pick up our cross (our personal struggles) and to live the life He calls us to. i dont know if this helps your or not but if you want to talk more just give me a shout out.

I know that you didnt attack me or mean to. I aint complaining. lol. but i just cant picture incest, or marrying your animal. i believe all those people are sick in the head (dont mean to offend) but i think they want attention, they want to be different, they want to keep it in the family because that's the way they think is right. i believe they need mental help and marrying your own father or mother is demented. EWWW (squints face and sticks tongue out) In reality we are all ignorants. In someway or another, aren't we?-Cookie Monster
I agree with you. to a certain extent we are all ignorant. not in school or at work, but in some of our emotions and viewing of life can be ignorant to others.

you know what, I totally agree with you. I love that during this election, so many people who have not voted in their entire life decided that it was time to vote, just like my step dad. We have witnessed a great time in history where many of us came together and voted for a better future. The outcome isn't the greatest accomplishment (although first "African American President" is a pretty huge turn in history), it was the stories of the individuals that got them to vote. It was amazing to have those people, who didn't think that their votes counted, realize that yes, their voices can and will be heard. It was a huge educational experience for me, as well. :] Like you, I wasn't able to vote, but we'll definitely be prepared for the next election, no? ;]
Kayla
My response is sooo late, but THANK YOU SO MUCH!! :] You know, I didn't think that I did well because I wasn't able to pull all the statistics that I wanted out in time and I also wasn't able to put in words correctly just exactly what needed to be said. But to hear a compliment from the outside perspective is awesome. :] And great job to you, as well, although I think you had the same problem as me, which is: too much information and not enough room in our heads. Frustrating, I know. But you spoke so passionately well that I was very impressed!! I know it was a little bit difficult because you didn't have too much to rebuttal, but overall, it was fantaaastic!
Jovana
You're so sweet. :] Thank you so much for changing your mind. I'm so happy that I was one of the reasons for you to make your vote count. I wouldn't want your voice to be lost because this country definitely needed to hear it. Imagine if you didn't vote, you'd feel even more awful about the outcome if it had gone against what you believed. Thanks for also recognizing your right, your privilage that people in history have worked so hard to give you. YAY! You're awesome, Jovana!!
Brandon
But I actually have to disagree with you on something you wrote. I'm not sure if you really meant to say this when you wrote it, because it doesn't quite sound like something that you would say.
Being homosexual is a choice. and i for one believe we can all be criticized and disliked for our choices. Descrimination? only if you cant help it, like the color of your skin, perhaps even your creed. But a personal choice? you know what to expect when you make them.
It bothered me that you said that being homosexual is a choice, because I'm not sure what you would understand about a homosexual person and why they are the way they are. It's the same way that loving a jerk or loving someone who is abusive towards you isn't exactly a choice that they've made, although staying with that person is. But I think what you were trying to say is that showing homosexuality in public (or just showing homosexuality in general) is a choice, and yes, by doing that, perhaps they are putting themselves out there and are agreeing to the chances that they might be attacked. But in no way does this mean that being a homosexual is a choice. I wanted to go further, but I know you agree that homosexuals should be more accepted into society, so I need not go on. Right? :]
To quickly change the subject (haha), I like how when you got to our little group in the morning, a tiny debate errupted. Haha. Although your post on Prop 8 puts emphasis on a different point than you had in front of the classroom, when I heard you talk in right outside of the classroom, I heard an argument for Prop 8 that really made sense to me. I kept hearing the same arguments for Prop 8 and against Prop 8, and from those arguments, I felt that being against was more reasonable. I did realize that it's very easy for people to take the side of the gay couples because they are people fighting for a right they don't have and religion is fighting to protec their right. It's a lot easier to sympathize with the gay couples because of this, although the Church and the gay couples are basically fighting for the samething: their rights. But I loved hearing the very reasonable and humane reasoning that you had for Prop 8. It's such a pity that those who think like you are put in the same place as people who might just be intolerant of gay people, just because you agree on the same proposition. Your reasoning is definitely not that of some of the other people's, I know that for sure, and I really appreciated hearing what you had to say, because it definitely softened the blow of Prop 8 passing.
Gabriel
I choose not to say monster because I just like names, but I hope that you know that I'm writing to you! I agree with a lot of what you had to say, although to tell you the truth, I did disagree with some. But I know we can agree to disagree, so I won't be saying anymore. Yes, giving everyone freedom is very difficult for everyone to handle, because that means not only do other people have to accept your opinions, you would have to accept others' opinions, as well. When someone considers something to be true, they have to understand that someone else might consider it false. It is just the price we have to pay for having this freedom. It definitely is a wonderful privilege, but I think that it can a burden sometimes.
Tri
Hey dude, great job on the mini-Debate you had with your friend. Thumbs up for that. Even if you didn't say anything to him, I think he would have made himself sound like an idiot on his own. Haha. Your friend definitely needs to stop using the Constitution without reading it first.
And I'm not sure if this is what you're talking about, but when you said
the CONSITUTION never PROTECTED OR VIOLATED anything involving INSTITUTION in any place
if you're talking about the Churches, yes, because of freedom of religion, that institution's right to its beliefs is protected under the Constitution.
I think you can really benefit from talking to Brandon, he can answer a lot of your questions. But you're right, people just care a lot about the title "marriage," and if it wasn't for that, they would get the same rights. Supporters of Prop 8 were already saying that they just don't want the tradition of marriage to be taken away, so if we call it something else and just give everyone the same benefits, it shouldn't be a problem. Besides, I don't think a gay couple would want to have a wedding at a place where they don't them to be wedded in the first place. I don't think they are looking for their marriage to be accepted in an institution where that exact act is by their standards a wrong thing to do. Suing the Church would be like suing God, which is ridiculous and I think gay couples are smart enough to know that. But yeah, your friend might be a complete idiot. He should get that checked out before it completely takes over :T
Oh wait, too late. :P

We all need something new,
something to get us through.
I understand those who are homosexual produce more estrogen, and some are gay due to their backgrounds with parents etc. [variation].
But why do they want the rights to marry? because they want all the BENEFITS everyone else has. Its all about the benefits, but mostly they want everyone to see that its ok to be GAY.
I am fine with them being gay, but why do they want something that is religious?
Obviously they are not religious, so why get married if in reality they do not believe in it.
THIS IS WRONG IN AMERICA.
WHY? because these days everything is corrupt, more than it was before. Government and church work together, it is all one, split in half to cover more ground. In different ways of course.
THIS IS WRONG IN AMERICA.
Divorce is ok!?
Government created divorce, divorce created new options in humans minds as a plan B.
If their not happy how the marriage is going, the individual can always hit the cancel button.
Instead of sticking through the hard times and pulling through it, and love each other more in the process of overcoming the problems together.
THIS IS WRONG IN AMERICA.
The homosexuals can do whatever they want behind their walls. Just do not take peoples beliefs because the government gave you a chance.
WHY DON'T YOU CREATE YOUR OWN NAME AND SYSTEM FOR Marriage.
Do not take others religion, just because you want part of that religions beliefs.
Obviously you are not religious, you want to marry the same sex.

Isaias:
Dude, ... you are ma boy. you know this =] i wont get mad at you. reading what you write is so entertaining. its so funny and true. i love it! you rock. but yea i only have one reason as to why gay people want to marry. its not much to take religion because clearly they or we are deliberitly trying to go agaisnt what the lord has created. which is for a man and a woman to marry. understandable. but i beleive they want to marry not to be like everyone else, but to be able to see thier loved one if they are in the hospital. to be able to live like a normal married couple, (sort of) since normal marriage is between man and woman.
when god had Noah's ark, i understand he had a female animal and a male animal. so they can reproduce and keep their generation growing.
so i end with this ...
even though i am bummed that i cant marry a girl (which shouldnt matter to me because i dont plan on getting married) i understand why the law did not pass. i love gay people, i am a gay person, and i wont argue that subject anymore. not because i have nothing to say to back them up, but mostly because what my classmates say is true.

The reading is a little bit hard to understand. After reading it several times, this is what I think. We have many heroes, although many people do not see them as such. The people that one might see as a hero, are nothing but images. One sees these carectors on television and asum thats how they are in the real world. The true heroes are many times ignor. I found this comment by Richard Rohr interesting, "Quite seimply, there is no room for God within us as long as we are filled with our false selves." We cannot think or belive on something when we are in a state of being false. If one lets go of that type of living than one can be themselves. We would all be heroes if we strive for what we want in live. If one has the power and will to think of others than thats living. I am sure that there is more , a lot more, to this redibg but that is all I can think of at this point. I will blog some more, as soon as I get another though in my little head.
Come on class mates, and blog about the reading. I will like to read about what other people think about it. Maybe I can see what others do and understand it better.
Thank you, and everyone have a great weekend.

The Way and Its Power, by Lao Tzu, is a short essay dealing with the fundamentals of Taoism (also called Daoism). Taoism is, in a nutshell, advocating doing absolutely nothing while being in harmony with the world. Because Taoism stresses doing absolutely nothing, success becomes failure, up becomes down, black becomes apples, and the entire train of thought is in conflict with human nature.
Taoism seems to me like a philosophy for those who don't want to have to actively live their lives, and can be condescending (intended or otherwise) to others for trying to live theirs. As Taoists, they will never speak it, because they are supposed to "not rock the boat", so to speak. In other words, extremely depressed people will find it very useful.
Eva and Jon,
I commend you both for starting the conversation this weekend about _The_Way_And_Its_Power_, and _Separation_Encounter_Return_.
Jon, interesting angle as always to your interpretation--lazy people?
However, think just a little below the surface some more like you always do with the abstract and try some more concrete--just above the abstract and way below the concrete as I would say.
Is Lao Tzu not discussing the stillness of the spirit? Yours is a more literal view of it (funny as you always are) while it may be a bit more simpler yet complex:
Out of peace and stillness, harmony comes.
There is a universal doctrine that binds all humankind together as Isaias and Gabriel have asserted so forth mentioned and as well as Jovana has exemplified in her stream of consciousness.
To be complete is to take the low ground like water. It is one of the most powerful elements because it can wither away mountains and make them mole hills and it can freeze the most powerful of monuments and crack them into ruins.
I could give you the more figurative deeper meaning here but instead I give you a metaphor for you think about it.
Why does, in _Departed_, the priest say to Jack Nicholson's character, Frank Costello, the pastoral before the climax of the movie, "Pride comes before the Fall."
Eva's comment that the true heroes are easily ignored--very profound yet very true.
Hers connects to Lao Tzu as well as Richard Rohr's theses. Both philosophers discuss a sanctification of spirit:
1) set holy or set apart
2) purify of negative aspects, sin
dictionary.com
Richard Rohr's _Separation_Encounter_Return_
describes this said changeling even in the title:
Stephen Reynolds discusses this aspect so bravely and asks pertinent questions about this same process:
Separate oneself from negativity, then encounter some(thing)(one) holy, and return back to the place one inhabits holy or set apart.
It is interesting that by way of indirectly discussing these topics about Proposition 8 and so forth, all of you and especially Stephen have discussed Rohr and Tzu.
What is the process of becoming a hero? Is one born a hero or is one made a hero through the travails and tribulations that one separates/encounters/ and /returns/ from?
It is as if to say, when one is questing,
Keep the Love,
Find the Humor,
Maintain the Freedom,
and Praise/Discover the Joy
in all things.
Rohr's article is much more accessible than Tzu, but both even though they are West/East are discussing the same thing in Tzu's a round-about way (circular thinking akin to Asian philosophy) and Rohr's a more straightforward but still multi-layered approach (linear in Western argument).

*¨¨*:·..·:*¨¨*:I just wonder to myself if more people were educated and who voted conscientiously that some of these ballot measures like alternative fuel research, drug rehabilitation and such would have been ratified and sworn into effect.
However, remember, what I said on the first week of school? One in four get a Bachleor's Degree.
Sad
That is the state of our nation.
*•:*¨¨*:•.There is a sense of urgency in my teaching as well as you as my students: We have roughly a month left in which to close out the semester, and we will be done.
There is a sense of lackadaisicalness in some of you that I may/will/should REMIND you that YOU will not pass no matter how much you plead/beg/cry etc.
I am not responsible for how lazy you have become. It is not my responsibility that your family/friends/life has taken you, and you have not shown up.
I have had students say to me: "Mr. Hsiao, we have to turn an outline in?"
"Mr. Hsiao, I still do not understand run-ons and fragments?"
"I have not turned in 2 100 point assignments/papers. Can I pass the class?"
"I have not showed up for the Debates. What can I do?"
"Am I supposed to finish the Midterm? It is too hard."
I laugh to myself that the proving ground will already be determined before the last day.
Your ethos/credibility is lost despite your pathos/passion and obviously your logos/word is nonexistent because you have not turned in the necessary work or shown up in the briefest of instances with papers and writings as it were.
I am neither responsible for all these excuses nor will I tolerate them in the last month.
An Addendum to My Occupational Duties:
I bear the burden of grading all these assignments--I will not even describe the amount of gobbly gook and sloppy sloop that I have to read: And I get these students who feel they can turn in their assignment whenever they wish.
Unacceptable
If this post is to say that I am angry, no it is not. I just contemplate to myself that if YOU were to do this in the real world, YOU would not have a job.
Easy
I know I joke around with most of you if not all of you, but I need but remind you of how serious I take my profession, and how there will be no favorites when I grade.
There will be a grade check coming.
And again for those students who do not blog for the class as a whole on Monday/Tuesday, let it be known that YOU will be the responsible/guilty party for the rest who faithfully blogged/posted and have to take a very HARD run-on and fragment quiz that will most likely take upwards of over 30 minutes.
Excuse me Mr. Hsiao. I have not missed a day of class yet and if I was to miss a day of class it is going to be this tuesday. Just to let you know, and that its not just because I don't want to come. Me n my band are playing a show for Iraq War verterans present and pass at the Seal Beach Naval base this Tuesday. Even starts at 1pm, but I am running the pa and boards for the whole event. Setup, tech, and tear down. So I will be occupied all day with this. Yeah my priorities might seem messed up, but this is music and thats at the top of my priority I'll retake this class over again if I have to if I fail because I missed one day, but I am not going to miss music.

life is not one defined meaning.
life might mean something completely different from yours, right?
Life is indeed a very, VERY complex paradox.
its meaning and its ways cannot be understood. We humans "think" we know, lets face it we dont.
but what we can do is live fully with Ethos Pathos and Logos. For those who somehow still dont know the meaning after Mr. Hsiao repeating this over and over. It means; Credibility, Passion and Word.
then again. everyone has different ways of living and dealing with life.

What the hell were the voters thinking. Why did they not pass the prop. There would be many new jobs in the criminal justice sector. More cops on the streets, yet the voters said no. We will see how much they like it when they call the police for help, yet threre will be no one responding to the call. there are not enought police on the streets now. if one wants to clean up the crime one will need more officers. The lack of ca voters shows how stupid we are for not passing the prop. GOOD JOB TO THE VOTERS WHO DID NOT PASS THE PROP. HOPE WHEN YOU CALL THE POLICE THEY CAN RESPOND IN TIME

My thoughts and results after reading this was complete support and enlightenment to my beliefs. "The hero might have a thousand paths...but there seem to be classic and constant patterns beneath"
Everyone follows a model figure, since the beginning of man.
The son follows the father's footsteps, the squair lives up to the knight's glorious triumphs, becoming a knight himself.
Except today most of us follow the negative model, someone who is rich and popular. Not someone who tells a story of wisdom, or does a good deed. Someone that gives us a message we can take into consideration, and make into outstanding innovation.
"I wonder if we even understand this stage anymore"-Richard Rohr
I say most of the population does not. Like Richard said "They just don't know."
Oh but Richard don't give them that excuse, they can know, the answers are there; you just need to ask the right questions.
You either live a life of happiness, living from the point you are born.
Or you live a life of knowledge, living to learn of what happened before you, and what is to come ahead of you.
Live for something bigger than yourself, don't just drift through time.
We are a species with amnesia, we do not know exactly how early humans created these amazing monuments. That took great engineering capabilities.
We only know as much as books can tell us. It is scary.
Seperation-encounter-return does refer a lot to the holy books. I am not going to say in negative ways, it lets you decide for yourself. It presents different aspects of our reality here on Earth.
"Christ has died, Christ has risen, and Christ will come again."
-Followed by "Life will be death, failure, and absurdity"
Died-DEATH
Risen-FAILURE
Will come again-ABSURDITY

Have individuals on this earth ever witnessed such a phenomenon as to rise from the DEAD!?
But like i said, we are a species with amnesia. Who knows what events went on in our Old World, we know not much of.
How can we be of "sin" as soon as we are born?? absurdity.
How can you as a human being have some motivation in life, when already accused of "sin" for being born! Thus, you need to be baptized in order to cleanse the "sin."
These people who COMPLETELY go by this religion, don't cuss, drink, or run around.
These people are uptight and afraid of the world.
In a different consciousness inside their minds is filled with fear, disguised self-interest, social convention[custom rules].
They have hate for others who do not follow their order.
DOES THIS SOUND RIGHT TO YOU?
I believe Jesus was a great dude, I believe he was one of the first to set apart from the regular customs. Put fort a new way of life, a common good life. To be good to thy neighbor, to be a hero. People looked up to him for this, he was a hero you might say to these people.
Now these people had someone to live up to, thus, began this cycle of a thousand paths to walk all classic and related to same principle.
Live for the Common Good.
In my life I have a model figure I live up to, for his knowledge and wisdom.
Not someone who 'Wows' me in entertainment, in contrast someone who teaches me something meaningful to REAL REALITY.
"Our real demons are interior, quiet, and disguised and often show themselves as the "noonday devil"
For you see there is no devil, we created the devil in our minds.
Your choices, your thoughts, you make all this in your minds. You can not blame something you create in your mind for your actions.

Me talking about the devil is creating it in your head.
YOU make it exist.
I am making it be through the power of the mind.
Perception is the true key.
Let go of your false selves.
WE are scared of what is out there, what created all this, what is our true purpose.
So what we do is create a shortcut with 3 letters and call it GOD.

"I just wonder to myself if more people were educated and who voted conscientiously that some of these ballot measures like alternative fuel research, drug rehabilitation and such would have been ratified and sworn into effect."-Mr. Hsiao
So true Mr.Hsiao, it is so sad prop 7 and 10 did not pass. I can not believe humans do not understand that we need alternative fuel!
Obviously the ones that depend on fossil fuels to run their businesses voted no on the propositions.
Their is more customers than business owners! we could have changed our world into a positive direction. Instead we choose not to, why America why! It brought a tear to my eye professor, i wanted my child to see a new world a great world, a world where civilization can work with the Earth.
This was something people should of been protesting about, not marriage vowels!
What a sad world we live in.....
Let me add Mr. Hsiao, when was at the voting booth i took about 15-20 minutes. As I stood at the voting booth people all around me came and went, taking only about 2-3 minutes!
I thought to myself "Did you even take the time to read what you voted for!!"
Sad, sad, sad.....
Isaias,
Remember my philosopher-in-the-making that this is your perception.
Richard Rohr's words may lend themselves to your interpretation, yes.
I agree.
However, he is a Franciscan Priest and founded the New Jerusalem Community and the Center for Action and Contemplation in which he
emphasizes liberation,
the integration of action and
contemplation,
community building,
peace and justice issues,
male spirituality,
the Enneagram, and
eco-spirituality.
These are so complex and diverse that it would be difficult to go into further clarification even study, but remember Isaias, it is about your perception and what you can glean from it: If it is contemplative, peaceful/justice provoking, and spiritual for you, than yes, you have gotten what Rohr wanted for you to get.
One can take what one wants from a message as long as one searches out the truth for oneself.
One does not necessarily have to be religious to be spiritual.
That is precisely what you have done: look to the spiritual.
You are spiritual.
You can agree to disagree.
I acknowledge that.
Good work.
Isaias, I agree about critical consciousness of people. Most if not all of us are inept at understanding fully the total truths out there. We can only physiologically use 10% (Naysayers have said up to but not including 30%) of our total brain capacity with 50–100 billion neurons, with around 100 trillion synaptic connections to conduct the messages back and forth. Just imagine if we actualized all these connections so that we could expand our minds and our range regardless of time and space. Truly something to reckon with, I would agree.
"Just imagine if we actualized all these connections so that we could expand our minds and our range regardless of time and space." Mr. Hsiao
i believe our brains keep evolving. slowly, but evolving. However, Evolution requires necessity, something we try to get rid of. Necessity is the mother of invention. How can we improve our brains if we try to avoid harder tasks, longer routes.

Greg,
Do not feel that this is a specific area inasmuch as
This budget crisis locally and nationally is not only vein from which the renewable resources, police funding, rehabilitation sourcing, and other valuable infrastructures and man power are being rerouted and cut back from: These are the collateral (monetarily versus militarily) damages based on the greed and avarice of wealthy people who took advantage of the housing market and the gullibility of families who did not read the fine print long or hard enough when they signed on those subprime mortgages, which circles back to the educators that teach literacy to those same former homeowners who now are foreclosed upon or in default. They did not have the proper literacy to read the technical discourse.
What breeds ineptitude and the vicious cycle of Haves/Have Nots will continue on.
Yes
I have written letters on behalf of my pubic school teachers who are facing budget cuts of an extraordinary sort because of this recession:
This is a credible source by
By Don Perata
President Pro Tem
California State Senate
explaining the plight of education:
California Education Budget Update
"Once again Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger is talking about improving education without acknowledging that his budget cuts would devastate California’s classrooms and leave the state nearly last in the nation in educational support."
"He balances his budget on the back of education taking $4 billion from a system that is already ranked 47th in the country in per-pupil spending."
Cutting $4 billion would mean:
• Laying off 57,000 teachers, or 20 percent of the state’s teaching workforce. Or,
• Eliminating four weeks of the school year. Or,
• Increasing class sizes by 23 percent, making them about one-quarter bigger.
Everyone including public school teachers and educators are feeling the pinch.
The economy will be undergoing some difficult/trying times.
Barack Obama will have some difficult times ahead.
Police, teachers, firefighters, etc. etc. etc., city officials, and many many more state employees will suffer and their immediate families as well as the ones they service will suffer
As we will all suffer. . .

Yue,
Thank you for at least noticing that my arguement was less about gay-bashing and more about reason. I dislike the other means of coming the the YES vote on prop 8, because it is more ofthen than not just religious bias and misinformed banter. But i can tell you got what i meant and thats pretty encouraging.
Solopan,
I agree with you, the votes have been cast, and Prop 8 passed. While i believe all these gay rights protests are unfounded, i rspect their right to assembly. Also, there are still 2.7 million uncast ballots in california. considering prop 8 passed by the narrow margin of 500,000, its difficult to make the compelling case: "majority rules".
also solopan,
it took ME just 5 minutes to cast my vote. what did you take 20minutes for? did you read the ballot measures in their entirety before you got to the booth or did you just read what the ballot said...my Point: if i knew all the answers to a test, it would take me just a couple minutes to bubble in the answers.
Brandon,
You always have a way of seeing an issue. It is what it is, and I am gladdened that you re-clarified your position on Proposition 8.
Yue, always has a positive spin on whatever is going on, and she supports all, everyone if you will. A very rare commodity indeed to behold, we are fortunate that she is in our class.
The comment you posted previously was not one of bashing as you said, but one of language and inference.
Also, Isaias is someone that you, if you met him, person-to-person, would find of like mind not issue wise but personality wise because both of you are such deep/critical thinkers that are philosophical in nature--eccentric/dialectical/intellectual
Hhhmm, these attributes remind me of myself as well.
Funny thing
Let us not feud, but search for the truth in all its forms.

BRANDON:
Yes, I understand your reasoning.
So it would take you five minutes to finish a test, if you knew the answers. Unlike yourself, I revise my tests. Which should take another 5-10 minutes, adding up to a 15 minute average time.
I read and voted carefully, with good judgment, and ran through my mind the outcome of every vote I made.
"I voted with my heart, not my wallet"
People like yourself should really think of the future, and revise your actions please.

Let us get back to the subject at hand. . .

We all have to think before we speak.
I am guilty of that myself, Isaias and Brandon.
I admit culpability in that.
No more fussing about.
Restrain yourselves.
I mean that.
"i was reading your comment about batman and the joker, and how it wouldnt be fun otherwise. Like, a hero and a mass murderer right? god it sounds so FUN. Then you contradict yourself:'power to the universal mind'. So, life is better with differences but harken to the one-mind? huh?please explain..." Brandon
you need the wrong to have a right
you need right to have wrong
you need an oppressor and oppressed.
I see where Isaias is coming from. we should all read between the lines. Like mr. H explained once. the world needs to expand its mind.
you need the crime. in order to have peace.
we all live in a codependent world. where, whether we like it or not we need the bad things in our lives as much as we need the good things.
also, you stated;
"..my Point: if i knew all the answers to a test, it would take me just a couple minutes to bubble in the answers."
I believe Isaias was talking about the hmmm lets put it simple, lets go back to your example of voting being a test. yes if you study hard you can finish it in minutes. but we have all see those individuals that they dont care about the test. theyjust write something down without even knowing. THAT was his point. all the regular joes that only cared about the next president and a couple props. If you spent a lot of time studying all propositions. thus allowing you to vote "quick" then more power to you, but like i said read between the lines.
not everybody looked at the issues in detail like im sure you did, right? those are the people his message was going to.
like Isaias once told me;
we're all colleagues.
Gabriel,
You as intercessor, I am readily impressed in how you searched for what they were saying and brought it up to a higher medium.
Yes, we are all colleagues.
we're losing our desire to explore to think to dream.--Gabriel
We have had so many conversations about this point, but it is what the world is coming down to is it not?
Also, do you notice
Brandon,
Isaias,
Gabriel,
That GWC, Cerritos, and Cypress are being represented by the most faithful bloggers of yore.
Interesting point is all.
We are all up Saturday night, huh?
Anyone else out there?
"You as intercessor, I am readily impressed in how you searched for what they were saying and brought it up to a higher medium." Mr. Hsiao
thank you,
I posted before that i felt as if my duty was to find a commmon ground a middle to anything.
we are all connected to anything. we are all part of the mirage we call life.
also.
"but it is what the world is coming down to is it not?"
time will determine that. until then all we can do is keep thinking. keep thinking of innovative ways to try and stop disaster. Time is everyone's common ground. something so precious, yet not really appreciated.
just because we know an apple is going to fall it doesnt mean we cant reach for it.
Absolutely,
Knowledge is just knowledge if we do not act upon that knowledge.
Hence, with all this knowledge is there not a call to action?
The reason we are higher sentient beings is precisely this virtue of being able to think/dream/engage/act/change
and make a difference somewhere somehow.
Very good discussion, Gabriel. . .
The threads keep unraveling, and we keep reaching . . .
Perhaps, the grasp is longer than the reach, but that does not mean to sleep is to dream but
"To die, to sleep-/No more.
For in that sleep of death what dreams may come, /When we have shuffled off this mortal coil, /Must give us pause"
This is Hamlet's famous "To be or not to be" speech, but it comes back to that dichotomy to act or not to act upon information that is morally reprehensible, yet must be done, or to seek solace in death because it is the easier of the routes chosen.
It is definitely metaphoric in choice, but the argument becomes one of choice: do we seek the easier of the two paths: the one less inspired/followed and falls in line with the masses or the other which is more difficult and the one hardly chosen that follows ideals and is rarefied in all that it asks of us.
This conversation leads me to
speak in reference to Robert Frost's poem
The Road Not Taken
TWO roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth; 5
Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same, 10
And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back. 15
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.
I do not know about anyone else, but
I choose the "one less traveled by/ And that has made all the difference" (18-19).
I know heady references, but Shakespeare and Frost are great references to the discussions that we have existentially.
Good work!
"Because it was grassy and wanted wear;"(8) Frost.
I took that as the truth, my truth, your truth our truth.
It waits for us to investage it, to explore it, to feel it
Truth waits calmly for us. and when we reach it, truth seduces our minds and helps us understand how things work,
the search for truth is an extensive one. Yet worth it. we must keep our Ethos Pathos and Logos strong in order to have the truth[our version of it] revealed
do we not?
Yes, very well said rhetorically, Gabriel.
I will not answer that question that you pose at the end because you and I and everyone knows the answer.
Good

""I voted with my heart, not my wallet"
People like yourself should really think of the future, and revise your actions please.
Think before you speak." -Isaias
Honestly, I have to say those two sentences were very very judgemental directed at Brandon. Just because he has different beliefs than you, you call him out and say he didn't vote with his heart? Maybe, he did vote with his heart and what his heart told him was different than yours. Not everyone agrees, that's what is so great about America. If everyone agreed we would have no problems, but thats not true.. example between you two.
"People like yourself should really think of the future, and revise your actions please."
Honestly!!! I mean come on that was uncalled for. No offesne or anything but how could you be so cruel to someone who was just sharing their opinions as well, but because you don't agree with them, so you call them out on it.
And what Brandon had meant by using the test example is.. if you knew all the answers to the test why would it take you so long to finish if you had already studied and reviewed the exam? Why would you waste time and go over the answers you already knew were correct?
"Think before you speak." How arrogent is that? I mean really his beliefs may be different from yours and maybe he was thinking before he spoke, but you didn't jump on the fence and see where he is coming from.
I'm not saying that you are a bad person. But that blog.. your words came off as if you were standing by your beliefs and your beliefs only, and what Brandon was saying made no sense whatsoever. I'm sure you are a great guy, but the way you came off in that blog was unappealing especially when you said "Think before you speak." That personally to me, is pure ignorance. I'm not trying to be rude here, but I fell into the catagory of what Brandon did, so I too felt as if I was being attacked. But I did vote for alternative fuel, if that makes you smile :)
---- End of Isaias ------
My Point of view:
It frusturates the hell out of me now a days people feel so obligated to attack one another if someones beliefs are different then theirs. I mean here it is: I voted Yes on 8. That doesn't mean I am bad person. It just means that my beliefs different from others. I'm not going into further details and I'm not going to argue with anyone about my decision. My point is that everyone on earth have different views and beliefs, why should other people talk down on them because they don't agree with the way one is thinking? Why does that make them a bad person? I'm not a bad person and the way I voted people are attacking me saying you have no heart, you have no compassion. All I can do is smile and let what they are saying roll off my back because it is my belief and I truly do know that I am a great person.

I've been following the blog through the conversation between the 3 reps from 3 schools, but I haven't been able to respond because my brain crashed after thinking too much.
:P
Same thing happened when I was reading the 2 stories, but I had highlighted the key points, so maybe when I review them, I can do a really good and really long post of it.
Kayla
I totally understand your frustration because especially during this election, I've seen and heard people do/say some horrible things because of difference of opinion.
There's different ways to look at this, though. Let's feel sorry for the lack of understanding that those people have.
There are some people out there, though, that have not been exposed to the reasonable argument behind the opposing ideas, so sharing the reason why you have voted for what you voted for might make those understand better.
I know this is the case with me, because hearing what Brandon had to say definitely opened my eyes to a better understanding, and I'm definitely glad that I heard his side. Don't think of this as a way of defending yourself or convincing other people of your decisions, but maybe do it for educating other people about the other side.
I hate that people get so caught up in defending their side and even get hateful in the process that they don't take the time to fully understand the opposing side, so I definitely know where you're coming from. I just wish that people were more open to discussion without feeling like they're being attacked. On the other note, I wish that people could discuss without attacking others. Haha.

Yue,
my simple overview of my blog was that if people don't agree with someone else's beliefs or opinions or such, they feel as if they have to tear them down. Now did I do that to Isaias, a little. But not intentionally. I tried to explain to him that just because Brandon does not agree with him does not make Brandon wrong in the position which he was talking about. Did i use some harsh words yes, and I apologize for that, but that is the way his blog came off to me. I do realize i did contradict myself and I will 100% admit to doing it. Explaining why I voted the way I voted is something I would love to tell you in person. Now the only reason I had brought up the way I had voted was because of the fact that I was trying to point out that there are people in the world that disagree with a certain way a person believes and so people discriminate on them. Now people may be thinking you discriminated on Prop 8, now those are those peoples beliefs and I will consider them, but this goes into my religious beliefs.
Isaias,
I'm sorry if I offended you in anyway.
But I have to go to a baby shower now, I will blog on the quiz later.
p.s.
Yue that blog was amazing. :)
Great job on calling me out. I didn't step back and think what other people would think about what I wrote. Thanks for putting me in my place. hah.

Hello everybody online right now!! I have re-read the two hardest stories in my life, over and over again. The thing is that i understand the first story better than the second one. Everytime I read the first story I do catch little hints here and there. The hint I caught this time was that, fairytale heros are not like real heros in true life, because the made up ones are too perfect and cannot happen here on this violent, greedy people and chaotic world of ours. It is truly difficult for peolpe to act civilized towards others and how does someone truly become an hero? By, giving free money out or adopting a child from another country. To me, I believe that is not a true hero, a true hero in my eyes is someone that risks their own life to safe another. Another thing would be, is someone or others that spend and devote their lifes and souls out to the people in need. Such as, Isiah house and the founder and volunteers of Kidswork. This is just my little intake on the story and heros in general. When I read the second story over and over again, I still get the same info. What i get out of it is, that it has a connection with spirtual beings and i just can't grasp it.

The debates were very interesting...i had no idea that some people were very well spoken in the class until now. it was unexpected for me to have a debate in a english class? but it turned out to be a good experience. it made me look at different viewpoints on issues that we are dealing with right now...taxing the rich vs taxing the poor? anyways...i thought everyone really tryed there best. . .for some first timers*
The Great Debates are done: the final phase with the exception of one class.
There were many good exchanges and many students quiet in class normally burst out of themselves and provided the class with great rhetoric and argument.
Echoing what Samantha and Candace have said thusly, Here is a Good Job!
Here are some low/high/lights of the Debates:
These persons are anonymous as to not humiliate or embarrass said parties:
A phone went off twice during a Debate and the person was speaking for the team and pointed to the phone and said, "That is my phone!"
A student lost composure several times during the Debate and the audience laughed so hard at both times that the speaker/student could not readily compose himself and get back into the argument.
A group tried bribing the class with In-N-Out Hamburger and Fries and succeeded in getting the class to celebrate/revel in their topic much to the dismay of the other group who came formally dressed with dress ties and shirts and were visibly and quite annoyed--they were unprepared.
Best friends were pitted against one another and would not take each other on head on in the attacker/moderator role but instead let another classmate take the other on.
Some students write how they talk and it is quite visible when they present as to how they get run-ons or fragments on their papers: It is how they talk in real life too.
There were instances when the Debates were two against four Debaters and there was a visible mismatch, and although there was a valiant battle most oftentimes the ones with the more people had a more focused and tight argument. Not all the cases, but for the most part that was the case.
Some debates got so heated that even after I called time, students still were staring at their opponent and muttering under their breath that there would be a next time.
Some students had papers upon papers of notes and could not find their argument no matter how hard they looked.
Others had reams of note cards and were just getting started when I said, "Time."
Groups that brought figures and tables and graphs out mostly used them as a decoy as a bait and switch that worked to perfection or the other group used them as the perfect attack tool to damage the argument.
One low/high/light said, "I taught the other team the meaning of Recidivism. They had no idea of the word before I taught them that word!"
There were Fbombs dropped in one debate and the other group through up their hands in defeat and all but conceded the loss. The whole class unfortunately erupted in raucous laughter.
There was another group where someone hit the podium just a couple of seconds in with an emphatic fist as if to hammer a point home.
Another student fronted at the end to bring a point home with a grunt or noise.
Students had nicknames for their groupmates and one group dressed alike in same shirts and pants to emphasize solidarity.
The attire of the Debates was duly noted from evening wear from the most earnest of ladies to the dapper dress pants and suits of the guys who impressed with dressing professionally. Some students who never wore sweaters wore them for the Debates and dress shoes as well to round it out.
However, the groups that were pitted against myself were duly disappointed because I did not debate against them, but instead opened it up with the class to ask questions, and one or two of the questions really stumped that said group while another in another class did really well. I offered up some of my questions, and the groups handled them just fine.
Personalities for the most part were evenly pitted against one another, and for the most part it was a civil matter done in an academic fashion without incident.
Moreover, there were male students who sent shout outs to their male compadres while females hugged and kissed their girls. Guys would fist pump or fist touch to emphasize their manliness while women expressed their appreciation more delicately.
Great Work All.
I know you are dying to know which group won, but you know that I have to say that these Great Debates were an exercise in presentation skills: Ethos/Pathos/Logos. It is not about who won, but how you came together as a group and delivered upon your argument.
I will give you your grades all in sum in a week or so with the grade check.
Please be patient.
Everyone did such a great job for the most part except with those above exceptions.
(¯`'·.(¯`'·.¸(¯`'·.¸(¯`'·.¸
Moreover, even when I was giving my critique/comments in one class, I saw how close the class became and was because they defended the said student I was evaluating. Good Work!

THE WAY AND ITS POWER BY LAO TZU
Like Professor Hsiao said, this short story could really help one meditate or be relaxed while reading it. I really liked the sentence in the first paragrpah that states,"Fear, pettiness, meanness-all those qualities that pollute the 'temple of the mind'-are due to shrinkage of life spirit. We may have some of these qualities that Lao talks about but energy and hopefulness will let us look past these negative emotions. It is very interesting to learn from different religious backgrounds of faith. When Tzu talks about reaching the four oceans that bound the world, figuratively it might be experiencing walks of faith. Literaly it got me thinking about traveling to far countries and exploring the world we all live in. Although I had to read a few sentences twice, it really got me thinking about life.
Kayla:
Yes i admit i came in a little harsh.
Brandon jumped in first just to let you know, he "attacked" like you call it. I was simply responding.
Although, all the statements i made were not out of hate, i do not have hate.
I simply made broad statements, not directed at anyone.
Only to those who wished to take the time to read it, from there they can take it anyway they want.

The Way and the Power: By lao Tzu
Chi is the driving life force. Tao is the air we breath and the world we live in. Does this sound familiar? Maybe just a little if one is a Christian. In the Bible God created the the world. Then from the dust of the earth he created man. I don't think there is any better way to describe his ever lasting power than the word chi. Every human posseses chi inside them. The energy flows through our bodies. We can learn to cultivate it, and use it for healt, or use it for destruction. This is again the the choice of free will God has given us.
I don't think when Lao Tzu was writing his heart and soul in to this book, he ever though some guppy student would relate his Buddhist beleifs in Chistianity. But I did and now it's done... So haha!

IN the story Separation - Encounter - Return, the story was about how some of the most popular story where actualy based on religous beliefs. it states everything from the death and the resurection of Christ ( if you believe in that), to the return of the hero. in the famouse story of The Odyssey, by Homer, he says that a man ran threw hell and came back (death and revivle) and his return.

The thesis that I got after reading these two stories, is that everyone has a journey to conclude in life. That journey may be spiritually or heroic action. This journey may be easy or hard. The path does not matter after you return back home, full with joy and celebrate. Just as Richard Rohr states,"the hero invariably returns home, back to his community. He rejoins the folks with his transforming gift." The ultimate gift is the feeling that one did an action that helps no just oneself but others as well.

I was just finished reading The Way and Its Power, and i have to say that story was really one of the complicated story that i've ever read. One main point that i might get from this story is maybe something like this. To achieve peacefulness in our life, we must get rid all of the anger, hate, greed and many other bad things that exist in this life. When one finally reached that level, most likely one would feel that their mind will return to sanctity itself.

To those who have not done your debates, I would recommend to have organized notes. One of my weaknesses was that I read my closing off my paper. I did not realize we had to almost memorize our closing. Overall I enjoyed doing the research. I really learned alot. In the end I realized I had more research then what was actually needed for the debate. I guess you can say I understand the reason for making us do the debates. I do not believe it was all about our presentation. I believe it was more about us learning, and that is why we were given topics we did not know much about. Good job professor!
As for the readings, I am completely stummped. I have read both over four times. I even tried reading them aloud thinking it would help me understand. N E who this is what I got out of the two.
The way and its power- I always heard people talk about their inner Chi. I think that is it exactly, something from within. It is our calmness that rests inside of each of us. We need to believe that it exists in order for us to benefit from it. The reading gives hope. At times we need to know that we have someone cheering for us. I believe a person's Chi is its inner self cheering and striving for acheivement.
Seperation Encounter- This was definetly talking about living in two seperate worlds. It was simple. It gave definition to a person being either holy or sinful. This reading was very spiritual in my mind. I felt the reading was trying to get its reader to be aware of their surroundings so that one can grow spiritually. Sometimes in life our religion is all we have.

ok i read the stories a couple times already biut like mr.h said they are very difficult. Not my usual type of sit-down-n-read-type-of-material.
out of sepereation-encounter-renewal by richard rohr, i got that every journey, adventure or story has the same steps no matter how u see it. it can be applied to countless situations and it all ends up being an experience at the end.
In the way and its power by lao tzu, i understood that our chi is our spirit in our innerself. that which keeps us calm or peaceful. when we feed this innerpart of ourselves with hate or anger or anythng of he sort, it shrinks oour chi (our inner peace).

Pettiness
Its all so Petty. Our Petty egos can't control a particular situation so we get angry at whoever is around. We want others to do it our WAY. Especially those who are close to us and those we love, and if they don't we get angry and that turns into rage.
In the big cities, and now the small towns of America, that rage turns into murder. People are actually killing each other because of their PETTY egos.
Release yourself from pettiness.
I was wondering, do we have school on tuesday?? its labor day, just wondering.

-Something new....
Discontentment
Are we really alive,
Living in a constant hive.
Work, sleep, eat, cheat,
All revolving in a constant chime.
The times have changed.
Only ascetic souls,
All in transient manner.
Left to roam in no honor.

Labor day was 2 months ago. Veterans Day is Tuesday, honoring current, past, and fallen military personnel. Two completely different holidays. Just thought I'd straighten that out.....
No school.
Ariadne and Chris,
Good clarification of points:
Tuesday, November 11, is the recognized Holiday for Veteran's Day.
Cerritos College Veteran's Day: November 11 Tuesday
Cypress College Veteran's Day:
November 10 Monday
Golden West College Veteran's DAy:
November 11 Tuesday
I am sorry that
We will have class as normally scheduled.
An interesting tidbit to add
Veterans Day is an annual American holiday honoring military veterans. Both a federal holiday and a state holiday in all states, it is usually observed on November 11.
However, if it occurs on a Sunday then the following Monday is designated for holiday leave, and if it occurs Saturday then either Saturday or Friday may be so designated.[1] It is also celebrated as Armistice Day or Remembrance Day in other parts of the world, falling on November 11, the anniversary of the signing of the Armistice that ended World War I.
(Major hostilities of World War I were formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 with the German signing of the Armistice.)
Interesting.
Isaias,
Interesting poem about discontent.
Freud has a book titled _Civilization and Discontent_
which speaks to asceticism versus worldly exploits.

Great juxtaposition there, and I believe Kayla mispoke or wrote the end of Isaias meaning she was done with that topic.
I agree with the pettiness part as well, which again speaks to how easily egos get bruised and how violence erupts.

Race on race, street on street, and so on and so forth. . .
We can fill in the markers with other names but the result becomes the same--
Ignorance begets Hate which inevitably leads to . . .
You already know the answer there.

Brenda discussed it and many if not most of your stories shared here on the blogosphere discuss this same ignorance.
Catherine,
Great observation, and you see the mind at work or at least my mind that is.

Separation-Encounter-Return
We are all on a journey towards wisdom, trying to figure out our true meaning in life. Everyone has their own trials and tribulations, and that’s what shapes us and gives us wisdom. One must hit rock bottom to find strength one didn’t know they had. In Separation-Encounter-Return it states, “ Life will be death, failure, and absurdity, which can lead to renewal, joy, and beauty.”

BLOG INSTEAD OF HARD QUIZ
"The Way and Its Power"
By Lao Tzu
The Way and Its Power is a story about Ch'i. Ch'i is the belief that a man (person) cannot achieve a quest without being centrally minded. A centrally minded man is one that is mentally stronger than an adversary, one that channels out negative thoughts and intakes only positive energies. Ch'i requires one's whole body to be in sync with mind and spirit. When all of these conditions are satisfied, they are referred to as Tao. Tao "... is the way that those must walk who would 'achieve without doing.' My belief is similar to that of Tao, in that I can only complete a strong body and a strong mind.
As Forest Gump would say... "that's all I have to say about that."
Rachel,
I am glad you found your earring.
You had half the class having a heart attack looking for it.
You will have to announce it tomorrow.
Chris,
Very funny as always. . .
You are the second person that has mentioned Forrest Gump in as many posts.
Strong mind and body, that goes back to the ancient times as well.
They both go hand-in-hand.
Candace,
The traveling bug is definitely one for consideration.
Isaias,
Do consider meeting up with Zack. Seriously

For the longest time I didn't know which way to go with prop 8. I felt if it passed it would turn so many gays away from the church. but after reading those verses it was an easy decision. i have very little patience and tolerance for those who don't respect gays and who are outspoken against them and hate on them. Who am i to judge them? Jesus calls us to be a servant to others. A very humbling verse that i keep close to me is 1 Timothy 1:15. And then the question about giving a child fire comes into play. I made the decision to vote yes on prop 8, to not allow gay marriage, to not promote it, and to show everyone its not ok. but I still love them. Just like I would not give a child fire, I don't want to encourage something I disagree with. but then the problem about separation of church and state starts and that is another huge conversation. i swear im done talking about this now. sorry about the lecture. Im just trying to help a fellow christian
To know who you are in God is to know the true self." To understand our live through thinking" only, is to miss much of our humanness and to be caught in a consciousness of duality. We must bring back the ancient prayer of non-thinking, of being re-minded of what we knew once. We do this through awareness, contemplation and a practice of silence and stillness. Without this third eye, "we are not able to see the human in Jesus and we are not able to see God in ourselves." – Very deep thinking from Fr. Richard Rohr, He was the founder of the New Jerusalem Community, He also participated in the film ONE: The Movie. The meaning of life the meaning of life constitutes a philosophical question concerning the purpose and significance of our human existence.
Separation- Encounter- Return
Separation-the state of lacking unity. Encounter- To enter into conflict with. and Return- To report, to Come back or bring back and make known.in this article he talks about how traditional stories or beliefs always relate to the spiritual world and they both have some relation to one another. For example in all the mythologies there is a task within a task and peace and beauty is found at the end of the task just like in all the spiritual stories.and to fully understand it we have to see the journey with different eyes. We must use our spiritual beliefs.
“We are still not in control, I am afraid; but we can control and mature our responses”- Richard Rohr.
Thanks,
Adolfo Leon.
