Beginning and Freshman Composition

Blogging in the Blogosphere
English 52, 60, 100

FORMAT:
When you blog, in the Title, write your first and last name as you would as if you are turning in a paper to me. Then you do not have to write my name because I know you are in my class. Write what English class you are in whether it is English 52, 60, 100 and what College.

For example, one would write:

Yue Hayes
English 52
Cerritos College
Post #1

Homelessness
Font size
In addition, for the title, pick the topic of discussion, grammar/organization, content, current events, pop culture or literature as a TITLE that we have discussed in class. Write the posts like this: write #1 Post or #2 Post or Post #50, so I can easily keep track of them and how many you write.

Of course, you are welcome to write more than several posts, and in doing so is another form of participation and does count in the participation grade. Perhaps, in class, you may not participate all that much but in the realm of the blogosphere, you can from the comfort of your own home,
  • reflect on the day's class discussion or offer up an insight that you found particularly interesting, etc., etc.

  • How does it change the way you think or thought before on the subject?

  • What actions might you take in the future? Anything is open to interpretation.

Of course, I need not go on and on about being respectful towards your peers' opinions and beliefs. If you disagree with another student's views be discreet about it: Do not say so and so is completely wrong because of this and that. Instead, say, I disagree with so and so and here are the reasons why I do. Go after their evidence and support and do not, I repeat do not attack someone else personally. This is supposed to be a forum for everyone to share their ideas and views.

*I will enforce the blogosphere by either deleting your hard work, making an example out of you here in the realm of the blogosphere or in class* . . .

Isaias,
I'm glad this will never be the end of you because I enjoy reading your blogs and what you have to say.

Anywaysss I hope everyone's weekends were great here is the assignment!!

Richard Rohr, in Seperation--Encounter--Return stated, "When a man cannot do greatness in some real sense, is life has no universal significance or transcendent meaning. He is disconnect from the 'love that moves the sun and other starts,' as Dante said. In that sense, his life is a disaster, literally, not figuratively 'disconnected from the stars'." (Paragraph Six)

These few sentences represent to me the human life as a whole. When a person feels as if they had disappointed or made a mistake in something they become down on themselves. They feel as if they did something wrong and punish themselves, even if it is for a few moments, days, weeks, or months. No one is perfect, and I believe that Rohr was trying to get that across to his readers. Even though there are times where people have a down moment in their life something will turn around. When a person is depressed sometimes they just want to lie in a dark room and never come out, and I believe that was why Rohr had brought up ‘love that moves the sun and other stars’. When hitting such a rough patch someone’s life becomes a disaster because they feel like running and hiding from everyone. People become disconnected with people who they love, friends, family, and people in general. At the end of reading this story I believe that Rohr not only was describing a hero, but any human being in real life. When all is said and done at the end of the day we really are all heroes.

Tomorrow my sister gets to go to Disneyland, and while she is riding Space Mountain I will be sitting in Mr. Hsiao's class. I'm kind of jealous. Haha.

Anyways I'm exhausted so everyone Goodnight!

My son had me read some of these short stories and laughed at my reaction to them. In "Separation - Encounter - Return" we obviously have a spiritually stunted and jaded individual who does not believe in people doing the right thing just because it is right. He feels that it stems from "a totally unenlightened consciousness of fear, disguised self-interest, social convention or even hatred of others who do such things." What kind of crap is that??? To think that the only reason people answer the "call" of religion is because their lives are "formless" and "uninitiated" is ignorant in itself. People form their belief systems not from the fact that they feel a void in their lives or that they cannot find meaning in any other way but because they feel good about who they are and what they are doing (perhaps because it is right and correct and our spirits recognize this fact even when our consciousness does not???) And what do we call people who have no sense of moral right and wrong??? (hint: it's called being a sociopath) ..... I may be saying too much but one other parting comment.....

Obviously Tzu has not met many "real" women if he calls the female element "negative" and "passive"

that was my mother everyone. sorry about that she is usually so quiet.

I tend to agree with my mother tho. the authors said some very controversial things that we happen to disagree with the writers on. their ideas on how to gain enlightenment or religious insight and their reasons why people try to obtain then are wrong. most people do so so that they can live better lives. there are a few that do so out of fear but they are few indeed, and they do not do so for long. people do better going for the high road and choosing a path rather than wandering to and fro.

I am glad that you and your mom looked in/on this material. It is always good to see from another's experience or lens especially one with a great deal more experience--your mother. Just think if more parents were as involved as yours is.

Thank you Mrs. Rice and Tim.

Well I had the most gloomiest, weirdest, and very awkward weekend.
My heart still aches from all of these bottled up emotions and the not bottled up ones. My Best friend is one of the strongest people I know and I am very strong too but shes more than me. The thing was she wanted to go to a show or theater thing on sat (@cerritos) since for ever and her sisters ended up backing out to do "hw"(they ended up talking to their bf and ex-bf) then she dragged her oldest sis to go. It was her oldest sis, her and me to go see the show and also spend some time w/them and be their guide too. Her sister was so upset that she let my friend all abandoned and crying her eyes an heart out. I got angry but I comforted my friend. I tried everything and at first she pushed me away then when she found out that the tickets were sold out she got worse. Then yet again her sis left her all the way back so I went to my friend once again and this time she let me comfort her. She felt so bad she kept blaming her self over and over again which caused my heart to squeeze with every thing she said and a knot on my throaght for the tears she shed and I wiped away. I gave her a huge hug and held her hand while walking beside her. I didn't care that old people, young people, or even her sister saw because I was so sad and crushed seeing my friend like that. Btw it was my first time ever seeing her cry, be sad and angry. So I really didn't know how to react I just did what i thought was best so her sis got even more mad because of it. Either way they dropped me of home after our long drive and my friend had stopped crying until they left me at my house she cried again cuz she didn't want me to go home. Then today we were supposed to have fun and go to chucks and her sisters not comformed by making her feel bad yesterday made her cry today again I wanted to get in the middle of it and protect her but I knew better so I left the room. Then after I went to search to see where she was I found her in her little sis bed crying her heart out ,yet again her sis not doing anything about it I went to her side to comfort her or make her laugh which she did not so i had to jump to the other side of where she was lying down and layed next to her and hugged her side ways and she cryed even more and I felt bad cuz I couldn't do anything but comfort her. I just wanted to get crazy glue and mend her shattered heart. After she left w/her sis some where I was the one crying because I was so sad and hurt of seeing my buddy crying. Her second oldest sister asked why and I told her a part of it and she looked at me and said "just think things through. God will make everything better if you pray for it." Don't get me wrong, I believe in prayers and miracles but I know jesus gots stuff to do too. Im special but not that special for him to fix things when I want them fixed. Anyways My buddy and I ended up buying food for the fam. and watched friends(the ty show) in her mom's room. Now I am home after a long day and I am still sorta crushed about my buddy because I know why she cried and everything she does not tell her sisters, but I most of all did not want to leave her alone because she needs someone to be with her and her sis were being mean. Its sad to see someone you care about so much, sad and heart broken, specially when you NEVER get to see them like that at all. sry this is like my venting place I guess so yeah. for those who pray please pray for my buddy and her fam. for those who don't I guess wish them luck. Thanks guys and have a good night.

The NIV Bible has 89 phrases about fearing God. The bible teaches fear of God is a good thing. Revelation 14:7 says "fear God and give him glory..." imagine what the world would look like if there was no fear for God. and I believe people were made to worship God. we were made in his image and all his good qualities were poured into us. look at our creativeness which reflects his own. He gave us the ability to love. and many more but most importantly He gave us free will. A choice to love him or not. I feel humans do have a void in their heart when they are without God. Nothing is complete or perfect except God. We studied that in that one story about how everything degenerates and is destroyed and the only thing that survives eternity is God. I think humans try to fill that void with earthly things that don't last and that cause pain. money, drugs, sex, themselves, ect. what does their life revolve around? this is what the bible teaches as a false god. Like I stated in a blog a while back one of my struggles is lust and looking for women for comfort, love, and to cover my insecurities, to make me feel like a true man, whole and complete. Humans are obviously searching something. God reaches every person differently and every persons' relationship with God is completely unique from the next so before closing your mind to Richard Rohr's explanation of his view on why people choose religion please try to take that into consideration. also, Separation, Encounter, Return is an excerpt from a story he has written, not the whole story in its entirety. this essay, for all we know, could just be a means to an end. But for the most part I do believe at least part of people's subconscious choice to follow God is because of the void in there life. 1 Peter 1:17-19 even says our lives were empty before Christ which signifies a void. I am sorry this message came across as an attack. it is not this at all. i don't want to send a wrong message. I know everyone is entitled to their own opinion and I encourage that (diversity is awesome!) i am just trying to help expand the boundaries by which our minds our kept.

I definitely wasn't trying to "put you in your place," or point out any wrongdoing. I just wanted you to know that there are some out there who will attack and there are some out there who are willing to listen to may benefit from your talking and reasoning. It was more of an encouragement post than lecture post, and it's definitely intended to pat you on the back as well as to give you a little push forward, as well.

As Chris puts it,
POST INSTEAD OF A HARD QUIZ
Separation--Encounter--Return:
I remember learning about the monomyth of a hero in high school sophomore English, and the examples ranged from Oedipus to Luke Skywalker, which gave us pretty wide variety of characters, which led to a little better understanding.

I can think of so many different characters that follow the paths of a hero, and perhaps it is because they are supposed to be portrayed as the hero of the story. In any event, the hero will experience the loss of innocence, because "For the man to be born, the boy must die" (5).

In order for the hero to grow up, he must be separated from all that he knows-- comfort, safety, familiarity-- and really, escape the cave and look at the world for what it really is. This is the stage where Luke Skywalker wants to contribute to the war, this is the stage where Gandalf tells Frodo what must be done, this is the invitation to Hogwarts.

Then, he must encounter a problem in order to finally experience fear, pain, and difficulty and learn to overcome it by himself. This is the more obvious of the stages, where the battles and struggles come in.

Finally, he must return home with the "gift" that he receives from the battle, or "encounter," whether it be knowledge, destroying the ring (I don't know if you will quite catch the reference), or defeating a dragon. The hero must come back in order to better the community with what he has done.

In other words, I think we can think of the heroes as "super heros," too, because what one person does is bigger than him/herself. Often times, the superhero isn't completely happy because he or she isn't able to live a completely normal life, where they will be able to fulfill their own wants and needs. Instead, they live to save other people and keep the community safe. Hey, sound like anyone we often call "pigs"?
The enlightenment, I think, ultimately provides a man (or the hero) with selflessness and to be able to use himself in order to better the community. I think that's one of the reasons why it is important that the character returns home, because the only person that benefits from the separation and encounter without the return is himself, and that is not contributing to the future that is outside of himself. If others do not know about his accomplishments, how will they benefit from it?
At the end of all those stories that I have referenced, all the characters become very wise, confident, and most of all, powerful

The Way and its Power
I remember that it was also in high school that I was first exposed to the idea that one is truly free when s/he is a baby. This is the only time, where nothing influences us on our actions, decisions... heck, we don't even know what those things are yet! Knowing nothing is a freedom in itself, because we are free from the burden of knowing too much.

Like Tzu says, "To be perfect is to invite a diminuition; to climb is to invite a fall," I have been trying to, in my posts and pretty much by the way I present things, say that exact thing (6). There must be a balance, perhaps that is why if someone is financially successful, often times their relationships aren't very well-kept or well-developed. When we accept that we don't know all, knowledge will come to us. By thinking that we do know all, it only brings the missed opportunity in a learning experience.

--------------------

I hate that I take forever to re-read the stories then take forever to write these posts (because I revise and reword my thoughts over and over again), but I think it's worth it, especially if I won't be taking the hard quiz. ;]

I've been thinking a lot of things recently in all sort of different perspectives, so it's really nice to hear that raw religious side of things. I was not raised in a religious house, and was definitely raised in a place where the surrounding ideas were those of Buddhism (although it is definitely not Buddhism in its entirety, I'm sure that there is a branch that is more specific, but I wasn't old enough to realize this), so it's very nice to be able to hear that side.

Anyways, I think that by reading what you had to say about the bible and reading what Brandon had to say about Prop 8, I realize that there are so many ways to look at the same topic. I mean, people put emphasis on different things, and although 2 people might agree on the samething, they agree under totally different circumstances and with very different reasonings.

It is often times uncomfortable for me to listen to someone preach about God (maybe because of the way they present it, I don't know), but I found that it's very easy to understand and relate to your post.

It's nice to hear you say something with reason, rather than "You have to choose less evil of the two!" type of comments, haha. But in all seriousness, I think it's very awesome that you're able to provide reasons to your statements, just like during the debate (which, as I've already told you, you did amaaazing).

I know for sure that there are so many people out there that could benefit from talking to you, that's definitely for sure.

A road of memories said...

separation-encounter-return is talking about christianity which has died, risen, and will come again. This is the different between god and hero. One will died and will come back to life and bring harmony the people. Hero who lived and will died but will be forever in everyone memory. Mysterious is called the Holy. Holy is to rebirth, and he rebirth is God. For hero, he is a person who gives his life to something bigger than himself. Hero would sacrifice every thing of his needs to protect the people around him, he world, and the one he loves; it is something larger than his life.

This whole story is mainly talking about the differents of God and hero. God could be our hero, but a hero which never die. it is who will regain his power, and rise again as Holy and in power his people. It is who will return and brings harmony to the people. Hero is an immortal person that fight for his believe and his people freedom. Eventually, Hero will die. When a Hero conquer his quest, he will return home where he's belong.

Dang... I'm writing and posting a little bit too much... I guess it's my way of making up for not posting too much in the last few pages.

Anyways, I just wanted to share what happened at work today, since I keep thinking that some sort of challenges are being sent my way somehow in order to test myself, in order to understand myself.

I work at an outside cafe, but there are a few tables set up inside, as well. Today, it was very windy and people were wanting to sit inside a lot. This lady pulls up in the parking lot with her son, who is disabled. He cannot speak, although he grunted and made different noises, and he also cannot chew food. Well, the mother, while pushing her son in a wheel chair, asks me if they can step inside. I let them, but as I talk to her, I realize that she isn't going to order food. Now, if it was me, I would have let her stay, because there wasn't anyone sitting on the inside. However, because our manager was very frustrated at something else that had happened, I told her that she could not stay, but I showed her that there were places to sit outside. She understood, took her son to the picnic tables and they basically had a picnic.

When we were getting ready to close for the day and was stacking the chairs, she came over to help me. She also said, "it's okay. if you were a manager, I know you'd let me sit in there." I told her not to worry about the chairs, because I was getting paid to do it. She refused and said, "Things are more worthwhile if you do it to help other people."

She talked to me a little bit about the cycle of money, which my mom has actually told me about a while back. By giving back money to the community, it will come back to you. Although she was telling me how her husband is the only one that works and they used to live with a table made of bumgee cords, I saw her as a person who was wiser than me, from whom I could definitely learn a lot from.

Another weird thing that I had realized once they sat down, is that the wind had calmed down quite a bit. Things definitely weren't flying around as much. They were able to enjoy their time without having things blowing in their faces. Awesome.

However, if this was one of the challenges, it confuses me. Just like the man I gave my change to at the gas station (who, my mom saw, trying to buy beer), the ending of it all really gets to me.

When she had walked away from the picnic bench, she was pushing her son in the wheel chair. When I went to go say good bye and thanks for the help, I saw her light a cigarette and smoke right next to her son.

Solopan,

your comments about "i voted with my heart, not my wallet" disturb me. Firstly, have you ever considered that the two correlate to eachother? If i had a son, and i loved him, than he is my heart. now if i voted for my wallet, in order to have the money to take care of my son, than i am voting with my heart. I see them as one and the same. Secondly, i think it obvious i think before i speak. In closing, i would like to highlight "implied logic". let me give an example: im not an idiot like SOME people. now the implications would be that i am calling you an idiot. Which i would not do because i can tell you use reason in your words. But to argue that you did not literally say words, would not clear you of all charges. as monser says: "read between the lines". that is implied logic. attack is a loaded word for disagree in this sense

Monster,

You assume that most joe shmoes are idiots, or not on the same level as us. As if because we took a few college courses, we somehow operate on a much higher plateau of intellect than everyone else. 15% of americans hold college degrees. Most of us are not of that 15%...yet. I believe you do not give the majority of americans credit for how cognitive they actually are. Also, on your comment about "reading between the lines". When we say words, we must not only take into account what we mean to say, but what we actually say. When we go to these college classes and finally talk about higher ideas and thought, we like to think that somehow we are finally walking out of the cave. But we do not realize how many people took the same classes we took. We also fail to realize that many americans are just as enlightened as we are.

.monster. said...

"Monster,You assume that most joe shmoes are idiots," Brandon

I'm only going to say this once. DO NOT TAKE MY IDEAS AND BEND THEM in order to prove your point. Because in the process of such, my ideas can be misunderstood by others, and that is not my intent. However if you have evidence, please do quote my words if I said "idiots" or intended to. Also I will keep reminding you,

READ BETWEEN THE LINES

Instead of concentrating on the literal meaning of words.

Also, Brandon;

You sated:

"As if because we took a few college courses, we somehow operate on a much higher plateau of intellect than everyone else."

A person with the phd can be just as "blind" so to speak as those, as you put it, "idiots". Right? It all comes down to the person itself. Do we want to search for truth? Or do we enjoy living our lives with the sugarcoated lies of the media?

Nobody is talking about their achievments, or lack of those. We are exploring a deeper level. A level in which, yes, MOST americans still "blind" and simply do not care.

"I believe you do not give the majority of americans credit for how cognitive they actually are."

You are right. I don't. But I think mr Hsiao, as an educator, can agree that credit can only be given when one's Ethos Pathos and Logos are strong.

Look at our society.

We do not have credibility, our passion is extinguishing, and our word, well, we all know about our word.

So yes you're right, I don't give credit. I don't give myself credit. I don't give you credit. I don't give anybody credit. Because at some point we've all lacked one of those 3 essential points. Have we not?

However

I believe there is potential, to rise and strive. But it comes down to us. IT COMES DOWN TO US to either choose the truth or just take the easy road.

It is almost 2 am, and I have work in a couple hours. So I'd like to finish by saying. DO NOT BEND IDEAS. It is And.......yes! Read between the lines.

In Separation Encounter, Richard Rohr states, " Quite simply, a heros one who gives his life to something bigger than himself (paragraph 6) I have heard this saying brfore, yet i still think deep inside of myself. What makes a hero is it one who has a great job. How to you earn the title of being a hero, for is it when someone calls you a hero. I do not think that you are a heo just because some one says you are. The people that serve in the armed forces are true heros. Those men and women are the ones who keep America free. seperation encounter

seperation encounter was somewhat hard to understand at first. after reading it a few times though, it became quite interesting to me and made me think alot. i am christian but this story made me wonder if religion was just made up to keep order. the quote that really took me over was "one cannot usually have many gods before you or ones ego will remain the god who picks and chooses which god to obey today. this was why the biblical prophets were always trying to get the jews to love only yahweh and no other god. it is good psychology if nothing else." this really made me think about greek mythology and that they might of messed up and noticed it wasnt restoring order wich lead to creating only one god like in christiany and that sort. nothing will ever change my beliefs. this story really did make me think.

I read Separation-Encounter-Return by Richard Rohr, three times. Each time I read it I finally got my own understanding of the story.
The understanding I came up with is this...We all have heroes that we need to look up to. We may choose a God, a friend, a parent, a teacher etc...It is our own choice; it is our spiritual journey. After choices I had made, which brought me to circumstances I could no longer handle on my own, I found God to be my hero. In Separation-Encounter-Return Richard Rohr, says "Next the threshold experience normally happens when one's own system of logic, meaning success and truth breaks down"(5). In this quote I picked it tells exactly what I felt, I had nothing left within myself. I found it in a power greater than myself;God. Others may find it to be something or someone else.I needed to let someone else take the "steering wheel" of my life" because my ways didn't work for me anymore.
In the story that is what I took from it.

I like the message towards the end of this story. In paragraph 11 Richard Rohr says", there is no alternative, not other way to understand, than to go on the whole journey ourselves"11). This is kind of like the whole walking a mile in someone else’s shoes. We do not truly understand something until we actually go through it ourselves. We do not understand someone’s life and where they come from unless we have gone through all the hardships and all the good times that they have gone through.
I also really like paragraph 9. Towards the end it states,” finally, the hero is a hero precisely because he knows how to go back home"(9). Some villains start out as heroes. They start out doing what is right for people and then the power goes to their heads and they become so focused on power and having it all. All most all heroes can turn bad. What stops them is having something to stay good for. A hero knows how to stop when he has completed his goal and just go back to where it all started, where he belongs, his home. Like Anakin Skywalker in Star Wars, heroes cannot go to the dark side.

When i read this story i felt some what lost.Yet at the same time I knew all the stuff he was talking about. It opened my eyes and showed me no matter who you are there is always a journey you are on.Even though we see it through different eye and handle it different we all go through it.I thought that this story was great just for the fact that aany person can at least see one point in the story that they have been through.I guess in a way the story is showing how we are all very similar yet compeletly opposite and unique at the same time.

Wow what a great piece of literature. I read this story sevral times and I have read what others have blogged about. The great thing about this story, is that it could mean a number of things to many different people. This kind of backs my thoughts about religion. I think that many religions are similar, many different paths to the same destination. I think it's a matter of which path you choose to take. I also like the view that Shannon pointed out that, "Next the threshold experience normally happens when one's own system of logic, meaning success and truth breaks down"(5). I think this is true. Like drug addicts, a breaking point must be reached before one sees that one needs help. It really is a great read.

Wow. Another deep one from Mr. Hsiao. I had to read this story a few times because it seems like it had so many meanings. In the end i realized that to me it means one without a role model can sometimes fall into the abyss of this huge world. i decided to pick a small quote for this because i feel this one describes it all. "In that sense, his life is a disaster, literally, not figuratively 'disconnected from the stars'"(6). Truly what Rohr is trying to say (to me) is that with nothing to follow or no rules of religion to abide by we all would be wandering blindly. our heroes are what keep us motivated in our path of life. we follow and go by what they do and it sets an example for all to follow.

Monster,

i will reiterate my point about language. when we say things, we must not only take into account what we mean to say, but what we actually say. I will use Obamas campaign as an example. how many times did his staff issue a statement about what he 'meant' to say after he said it? "you can put lipstick on a pig, its still a pig". we all know his point. but if he was as great an orator as everyone gives him credit for, i think he would choose his words a little more carefully. Reading between the lines is fine. But i value also the literal sense of words. Dont get me wrong. i value your word very highly and am always eager to read when you weigh in. But i believe 'twisting words' is a loaded way of saying different perspective

Separation-Encounter-Return by Richard Rohr

Aside from the religious aspects of the reading, I feel that Richard Rohr is granting acceptance for the mistakes we will make in life. He has a realistic approach in that one has to become their own person, not effected by the influences of their peers. One has to experience life based on their own definition. No matter what forks in the road one may come across and choose to follow along the way, as long as one finds the right way back home, all is forgiven. I think it is just hard to find an individual who is not concerned even just a little as to what others may think of them. It is why we sweat over first impressions. I also took from the reading that everyone is influenced or modeled after something or someone else. I do not know how we can be encouraged to be our own person and "...go on the whole journey ourselves" (11) if we're expected to follow in someone else's footsteps.

In the first story I read the understanding I got is that as I read i noticed the reading had a lot of spirit that makes us think about religion. We tend to notice that most people believe that is all we got sometimes but the reading makes you think about the different religious backgrounds there are and basically think about life itself.
The other story from Tzu it sorth of gives a person hope. As if one needs to know they have support. It makes us forget about what bothers us at times inside and gain inner peace within each other. One needs to reamin calm and think about ourselves and not let your hate take over inside of you. These things that bother us can be controlled only by our own selves.

The Way and Its Power by Lao Tzu

I have a great appeciation for Taoists. To be able to obtain and maintain that type of balance is admirable. It is hard not to be effected by grief and joy, delight and anger, desire and greed for gain. There is always an opposite to a positive to keep a type of balance, but the acceptance and understanding is my personal challenge. I am more of an "everything happens for a reason" type in oppose to "where there is a will there is a way". Which I guess classifies me as lazy, both physically and mentally. =(

As the story Intel talking about heroes in what seems to be the christian community, Jesus being the main character. It gos on saying that no matter the path one takes stick with one don't go bouncing from this one to that one, like it says in in paragraph 4 it says " one cannot have many Gods before you or ones ego will remain the God who picks and chooes which God to obey today." its like idolizing a statue an inanimate object there shall be no other before him. Chooseing your own path and sticking with it will ensure your righteousness for all eternity. There is only but one God no matter how you look at it there all symbolic of the one true savior.

Sparation encounter return is a crazy interesting story to me because it talks about the life someone lives and finds out that they dont like it thats the sparation. so they go on a little mission to find what they really want in life, that is also part of the sparation. and when they do find it again ,encounter, they are reborn again.

First things first...

I want to apologize to my friends, Cely, Isaias, Sal, Talini, & Amador. I'm sorry i couldnt make it on Friday night. that was def a "MA BAD". next time for sure ill go. =] hehe

ok i read the stories (Practically a gazillion times) and i put 2 in 2 together and i concluded that both of the stories had a great thesis. The thesis was that everyone is here for a reason. we are put on this earth to do something, to accomplish something. we dont know what but once it is done and accounted for, we think "this is exactly what my purpose in life is". The stories were hard but i have to admit that they where great stories. a challenge is always good right? you feel Accomplished, Satisfied, and Relieved after everything.

Stephen Reynolds:

It's completely fine, dont apologize for helping a fellow christian. i appreciate it greatly. thank you very much!! =] but yes i agree with you. i love gay people, and i wont bash or say mean things to them (because they are human as well) but i agree that we cant say it is ok and make it public. kids shouldnt have to know about anything sexual (in my point of view) until they are in middle school. they should learn about sexual intercourse and how to be safe around that time. I COMPLETELY AGREE WITH YOUR PHILOSOPHY ABOUT THE KIDS PLAYING WITH FIRE. You are correct and i awknolegde it. =] You are AWESOME! thanks once again Stephen.

General:

OK i love ma boy Isaias and Monster is another friend whom i like talking to (hope to meet next and final fieldtrip) but what is up with all these conflicts between you guys?

im the type of person who doesnt usually say mean or hurtful things because i wouldnt want anyone to do so to me. but you guys need to cut it out. its honestly, ANNOYING! All you guys are intelligent and if you dont agree state why you dont agree, and what you beleive. dont bash eachother using sarcasm because that is not what the blog is about.

i dont want to lecture or anything but it just makes me upset to read these altercations between you guys EVERYTIME i come on here. Isaias you know you are like one of my close friends, but you are WAY better than this. why dont you guys just meet up (on the fieldtrip or something) and TRY to talk without bashing one another. i think you guys gotta get to know one another and see if it flows like how it does on here.

im sorry i dont want to regulate or sound like an uptight girl but im just annoyed with the whole thing. it makes me mad to see my friends being bashed for the SMALLEST things.

If there was anything that i learned from the Getty Museum it was this ...

"there is no point to be upset at the little things in life, because in the end we are just little specs surrounded by things that are way bigger than us!"

This is very powerful writing. One must be able to understand by reading times many. I basically have to agree with what is said. We live for a purpose and their will always be a re-birth of some sort. Be it a death in the family or a divorce with a loved one. One must find it in their heart to move on and keep on going. Like i said before it is a very powerful scripture and I can't seen to find the words to express myself fully. I hope this will not hurt me in the end.
Sorry Mr. H

The first Story Separation-Encounter-Return By Richard Rohr gives the reader a sort of spiritual religious comfort. It provides us with relevant information on how many times people only believe in religion and nothing else. But Richard gives the reader a different perspective on the topic.

The second story The Way and Its Power by Lao Tzu is similar in some ways but basically gives the reader hope through its text. It gives inner peace to one and helps you understand the universe in a more calm and peaceful way. Kind of like ignoring everything bad around you only letting you see the good thing that make you feel in peace.

What I think about the story is that one can be his or her own hero without looking for it in a celebrity or someone that has more than one. The author gave a lot of examples of different religions that have heroes. I personally have gone through a stage in my life where I felt empty inside and feel that there is something bigger in life. I felt empty inside and going out all the time, or buying something new did not satisfied me anymore. That is when I turn to god and came across one of his apostles St. Jude. St. Jude intercedes for me and my family so we do not get that feeling of emptiness inside. My faith has permitted me to be spiritually satisfied. I do not look for entertainment at clubs or buying new things anymore because I do not have that emptiness anymore. I am still in the journey where I know there is something bigger in life. The journey continues because if one thinks ones tasks are done there is another task waiting for you. That bigger task I believe is to be able to give up my selfishness. I think we sometimes do this without noticing that we are being selfish. I have passed from one state to another and in order to keep myself from going back to my old state I must go on this on my own. Like Richard Rohr said, “There is not alternative, no other way to understand, than to go on the whole journey ourselves.” (11)

Today i re-re-read Separation Encounter Return by Richard Rohr, and from my understanding it is about our faith and i liked when he said it is not something you believe, as something you learn to do. He continues to say," life will be death...which can lead to renewal, joy, and beauty." When something bad happens in life it is like we are reborn because we see life with different eyes we see it with a different perspective. For example when i loved one dies we try to make the best of our life and we do not take what we have for granted.

SEPARATION- ENCOUNTER- RETURNS
RICHARD ROHR

THIS WAS A VERY DIFFICULT STORY......
WELL A HERO IS SOMEONE WHO SEPERATES, AS TO SAY HE/SHE LEAVES ITS COMFORT ZONE AND GOES OUT INTO THE REAL WORLD. HE/SHE WILL ENCOUNTER MANY DIFFUCULTIES IN THEIR NEW LIFE, BUT STILL LEARN TO OVERCOME IT.IT IS WITH ALL THOSE ENCOUNTERS ONE FACES, THAT ONE LEARNS HOW STRONG HE/SHE IS. IN THE END THE HERO WILL RETURN HOME TO SHOW EVERYONE WHAT GREAT THINGS HE/SHE HAS DONE, AND TO TEACH THE KNOWLEDGE THEY HAVE GAINED.

THIS TENDS TO BE THE PATTERN FOR ALL THE HEROIC MOVES. THEY ALL FOLLOW THE SAME PATTER, LIKE JUSUS, OR HERCULES, ETC. AND IT IS GOOD TO LOOK UP TO SOMEONE OR HAVE A HERO THE ONLY PROBLEM IS THAT WE DONT ALWAYS PICK THE RIGHT PERSON TO LOOK UP TO, SO WE CANT DO EVERYTHING JUST LIKE THE HERO THEREFORE WE HAVE TO GO OUT THERE OURSELVES AND DO IT. EXPLORE AND LEARN!

THE WAY AND ITS POWER
LAO TZU

I DONT QUITE UNDERSTAND THIS ONE BUT I BELIEVE ITS ABOUT CLENSING YOUR MIND. ALLOW THE CH'I TO TAKE OVER THE MIND AND BODY TO OBTAIN PURITY.ITS IS ALL ABOUT MIND POWER. WE HAVE TO POWER TO CONTROL OUR MINDS WE JUST HAVE TO LEARN ITS WAY AND ITS POWER.

I feel that when you eqaute monotheism with Clearly of your spiritual path you Limit the possiblities of the spirit. He also talks about the protective figure such as Obi-one to Luke skywalker. Though this teacher is often wise i think the love we feel for them is more perental "falling in love" often elludes to a Romantic love.I read it but I disagree.

Separation-Encounter-Return by Richard Rohr

I think what this story is trying to say is that when we get a good role model or someone that will make us believe in something we loose them. The reason we loose them is becuase they are too good to be around us and some people might not like them and hurt them or try to stop them from whatever they want to do to help the other people. It was a religous story and what richard was mostly talking about was Jesus. He is a good example of how he was helping people belive in something good and change for the good. In the end he died and is away from us physically but they are still close emotionally.

I couldnt really understand this story but it hink it relates to the one by Richard Rohr. just in the way of how there is usually always someone there that will insipre you and make you want to belive what they believe. What i think i got from this story is that you learn from your mistakes. When you are small you dont really know whats going on or if its right or wrong. As we get older we have more things to do and we are not free anymore.

I want to say about paragraph3 because it is what I understand very well. "Do not fret, do not let yourself be perturbed and the Accord will come unsought"(3)Accord suddenly come to our mind when we are ready. To be ready to balance our mind, empty our mind, and don't worry and don't be disturbed myself. It is not easy to be pure in our lives.
I heard about Tao many times because I'm Asian. But I have not thought about it seriously, and I have not concerned about my inner things I have. I hope to get below my surface, but I cannot do it. I think I am not ready to observe myself.
Our homework on the weekend was not easy. I tried to understand both story, and find all the words that I don't know. The vocabulary in the story are very hard, and I have not seen almost all words.
I hope I can get thesis and the contents of story in the class.

Separation--Encounter--Return

What I got from this story reminded me of that Kidworks video we saw. The author says that life is death, failure and absurdity, which eventually leads to renewal, joy and beauty. In other words, if one wants to live, one has to die. If one wants to succeed, one must fail. I found that quite inspring. I agree with what he said in the 7th paragragh. He says that one shouldn't waste their time being prideful, negative or to full of themselves, since it will only hold them back from their "reward".

The Way and Its Power

It took me awhile to find the meaning of this short story, but what I got out of it was that if one wants inner peace and tranquility, one has to keep away from "grief and joy, delight and anger, desire abd greed for gain."(3) Harmony and stillness should come naturally to the body and mind. Even though it's right under our nose, it is still something hard to aquire, what with life and all.

Lao Tzu's story was really hard to understand. what i got out of it was that in order to succeed you have to fail, in order to win you have to lose. In richard rohrs story it was not as complicated as it seemed. I read it at least twice and went over it with a couple of class mates. I guess wat richard rohr was doing is exploiting religion, on all the falws and how all of them follow the same story line. I beg to differ his opinion. But then again that is his opinion and of course a lot of people are gonna disagree.

Any how i had a long weekend, and last wendesday i had the balls to talk to a girl that was attracted to, hopefully something happens. I worked all weekend and had fun, but had no time for myself =[

Dang, Girls......so hard to understand at times....but most of the things i know about them is because i was the only boy in the family growing up with three sisters... and still they are hard to understand. ITS NOT A BAD THING!
(to me) I am the one who wants to understand these things, very curious.

QUIZ ??

I have read both Seperation-Encounter-Return and The Way and Its Power about 35 times(literaly). I found that i like the way the ideals complement eachother. In "Seperation" it talks about the journey a hero must take in order to acheive greatness. It aslo says that people cannot change things around them, but the things around a person can change the indivdual. In "The Way..." it talks about Chi and The Tao, and it says that one needs to be humble in order to reach true enlightenment. I find that both of these concepts are parallel to eachother in that in order for a person to become whole they must look within and about them. There must be a balance of both external and internal influance in order for a person to reach thier true potential. A person must have self-knowledge, and must also be pushed to the darkest pits of humanity, in order to truley achive the greatest potential possible. I have said before EVERYONE HAS THE POTENTIAL FOR GREAT CREATIVITY OR DESTRUCTION, DEPENDING ON WHICH IN NOURISHED. A PERSON CAN EITHER PREACH DEATH AND DESTRUCTION, OF LIFE AND CREATION, DEPENDING ON THE EXPERICANCES THAT ONE GOES THROUGH. I find this to be the main concepts of both stories.

Separation Encounter and The Way and its Power

Mr H was right, these two readings are the toughest yet. I had to read them both multiple times just to understand them. I think that I get the message. They both are about how we all have the ability to be good people. Separation encounter is more about the path we must all go through in order to become what Richard Rohr refers to as a “Hero”. He explains that there are stages in life that we must all go through in order to be a good person. We do not go through these stages alone; often there are people along the way to help. However, we must still make the right choice in order to accomplish the goal of being a good person.

What Lao Tzu is trying to say in The Way and its Power is that we must balance our “chi” in order to let the inner good out. This was a harder read for me, but I think he’s trying to say that there is good and evil inside all of us. Without one there cannot be another. We must become aware of our inner selves, and cultivate that person to become the most righteous person we can be.

Separation Encounter by Richard Rohr:

This story talks about christianity.Basically the bible is the guide to christianity,it is the path which we are suppose to follow and is all around us but we tend not to seek it, we often walk around it. This story talks about faith and being heroic. Richard Rohr states, "Life will be death, failure and absturdity, which can lead to renewal, joy and, beauty." From my understanding it means that anything negative, can in the end become something positive. Being a hero means making mistakes and learning from the, having faith, and being a leader. Eventhough the hero is capable of all that there is always going to be someone inferior, a wise elder a patron or a guardian angel etc.

The Way it is:

The story is basically talking about the chi. Chi is the life spirit that defines fear pettiness and meaness. Until that pool dries shall the four limbs fail. For example, you should be able to explore heaven and earth, have no thoughts that perplex, and suffer without calmity. Chi is within the mind and is so small that nothing could go beyond it but nothing can exsist beyond it. It is basically the meaning of life. Chi is grief, joy, delight, anger and desire that are the basic ways of life. The Accord wich is between the mind and the universe that supplies power is there but unseen. We are unable to see it, or keep track of it but it is still there. Tai the way of vital spirit, cannot be tracked but it fills our body and it is mystical but it is hidden deep inside our mind because it was given to us by birth. Quietism wich is the mind within the mind. Tao a principle is used daily by people that cannot walk but achieve thier goals without doing but with thinking. Tao depends on thousands of certain things to occur and without it anything fails but you can susceed by using it to your advantage.

To me, Seperation-Encounter-Return is about people. In order to find our true self or a spiritual meaning we must find our path or journey in life. Through the journey, we are able to remove ourselves from our caves. Also, the thesis is about people looking up to "hero's" for their prestiege, and forgeting their journey.

I believe what Richard Rohr is saying is that everyone can be their own hero if they believed
on themselves. It also talks of how you live twice and that means basically that once is living their life all over again. It really talks about the religion of Christianity and how once belives on it. The story was complicated for me but what i read this is

The story was confusing to me. Most of the vocabulary is difficult for me to understand. I took from it however that our society has lost the sense of what a real hero. A hero gives himself to something greater than himself. A true hero is selfless. So why do we as a society worship celebrities. We idolize them making them our heroes. What about them makes them a hero...they are the most selfish people alive driven by their own personal gain. A real hero doesn't have time to self pity or gloat. Self absorption is our biggest demon and it is inside every one of us. Often the best and wisest way of life is the simplest without petty worries about self image and wealth.

The Way & Its Power

Every human being should always remain with the heart of a child. It seems that human-beings throughout the years, we kind of lose power of the mind and also kindness of our hearts. It seems that the older we get, the more afraid we become. Fear is a major reaction as an adult. The fear to get hurt emotionally and physically is one of the major problems we face daily. The fear to fail is also a huge issue. In reality is not that serious, everyone should see failing as a learning experience, instead of regretting it for the rest of your lives.

Separation Encounter Return

The majority of people in this Country belief that in life everyone has to be part of a religion, in reality, it does not matter what you believe in. Some people might believe in Mother Nature, budda, the Sun, and others simply just lost. Whatever beliefs you and I have, they must be strong enough to keep us moving towards our sight. The sight that many people would not even put the time to even think of. The real search for the truth. I strongly believed that everyone has a task to finish in this life, and before we pass into internal light, our task must be completed. My task has not been completed yet. I am still in the process of searching for the clarity of my task. For many of us, is very rarely to even think about a task. Right! Many of you do not even know what I am talking about, but that’s perfectly fine because one day, you will realize what your meaning in life is completely different.

Mr Hsaio,
I was talking with a friend about the debate, and in doing so, we came across a question.

Does being content make you lazy and/or dumb?

I made a comment that people who work picking fruit –for a long time- are either lazy or dumb. How else could you explain someone settling for this type of job for the rest of their life?

They can’t be happy doing that for a living. Thus the question, is being content the same as being happy? And if you are content, shouldn’t you strive to be happy?

Anonymous said...

So yeah, didnt' have time to read about the Prop 8, i actually been pretty busy and now i'm just to lazy to read what's going on haha.

Anywayz, our assignment was to read The Way and Its Power by Lao Tzu.

Personally i say really genius but not all too significant. I guess it's becuz my interpretation on that which is viewed in mind and body is rather different.

So during my analysis, this is my interpretation of it...

The concept of which how we perform things is shaped is based highly on the construction the construction of will. For it is within the very roots of ourselves that we must fully overcome first. Our heart (although, Lao doesn't even mention the heart but for him, it's all about mind and body. Through my years, i have seperated the 3 things to mind, body and heart but because i choose to accept the category as a main subject instead of subcategory under the mind; this allows it to be a triangle ^_^) is filled with essence on which we are faced with and it corrupts our minds for it.

Fear in ourselves... (love, happiness, sadness, anger...)

Pettyness in ourselves (want, control, desires, etc...)

Meaness (definition, understandment, leveling, balance...)

Lao Mentions "A great well of energy must be stored within, 'a fountain that never dries,' giving strength and firmness to every sinew and joint..."

That, in my standard, is the expression that if our mind holds to our strongest that of our will, we then can keep rebuilding. Concentration and focus must be essential in order to fully balance between things. Do not give in to the that so called "power" of which gives control of outer things; faith???.

Anyway i would write more but i read this at the last moment and i still got a big exam in math tomrrow (seems like the same excuse and yes it is, but really, i'm failing math :( )

But i thnk i know a good exercise for this (i tried doing it one time but haven't had much time for it so hopefully others can try it and expalin some results)

>> CONCENTRATE ON ONE THING FOR AT LEAST 5 min << (harder than you think)

meaning if u focus on a landscape, u cannot leave that landscape whatsoever and neither can you put objects, animtions, or anything into that landscape. The flow must be constant and the perception of the mind must stay focus at all the times.

The flow of the river is to not be touched or contaminated at all. Indulge the reflections off it and look deep inside the roots of the soul...

oh, and all emotions must be controlled. Try to block out fear and desires....

Bottomline, it's meditation...

Wow! the first story Separation-encounter-return at first i was completely confused, but towards the end i undestood more about what the writer was tryin to say. We use people to worship, there are pople who never sin. In reality the people who say they dont sin, really do by hating on others who dont do as they do. The One we look up to, had to sacrafice his life in order for us people to realize and appreciate him. In the story the writer states "The real hero's task is to keep love, to find humor, to maintain freedom, to discover joy, to expand vision in the process of killing the dragons."(line 7) A hero can be anybody as long as they believe in themselves. I think that is what the writer is trying to say, to believe that there is a hero inside us. The journey to find ourselves should take our whole lifes, to truly undestand ones existence.

The other story The Way and Its Power, completely lost me. It talks alot about "taoism", what the heck is that! So i looked it up and it means they way or pathway...every action creates a counter-ction as a natural, unavoidable movement. To me i think the writer is just explaining another belief. Explainig more of the taoism, like the writer says "the art of the mind". Thats all i got for this story.

Oh yea and im still having trouble with run-ons and fragements!ugh!

So I am making my way to English class down the path way, with my muse, Araceli.

I notice two tall men of African decent coming from the opposite direction.

I look at their eyes, their eyes are on my girl.
I understand shes beautiful, but this stare went on for to long.

As we pass each other, one of them mumbles "hey"

Obviously at my woman.

As they pass us, their heads turn to take a last look.

Of u know what, damn primates.

Little did they know my head remained on them

I catch them in the act

Furious at this point i tell them

WHAT THE F**K!!!

They look at me dumbfounded

I was ready for a fight, and i guess they were not up for it.

I tell I run into you another day, i'll break your FACE!

It was just complete disrespect, my girl not knowing whats happening. I tell her "C'mon lets go to class."

Im sorry to the girls i debated against, I might of came on a little strong.

Well this was why.

Sorry Mr. Hsiao completely off topic, but can you believe the nerve this people have.

Separation- Encounter- Return
Ok so i read the story and it was pretty confusing. At one point i was re reading it, and totally did not notice I was reading out loud until my sister told me to shut up haha. I dont know you might think im weird or something, but when i read the story it reminded me of the "Da Vinci Code." Maybe because of all the religious issues involved. To me the story seemed rather controversial because it didnt only give u one side of the story, but both good and bad. "The journey never happens alone. There is always a wiser elder, a guardian angel,a patron saint, a spirit guide, a wiser teacher who somehow sends us in one crucial direction and warns of the dangers and obstacles that will be encountered along the way." (Paragraph 4) To me this means that everyones decisions are in one way influence by others. Some people choose to be very religious and be guided by a higher power, whether it be God or a saint. Then there are some who dont believe in God, who are then influenced by others as well. Like the story said, the journey is never done alone, which in a way i believe is true. I still have to re read it again...ans see what i get out of it then! :)

I thought it was really weird when I was reading Brittany's comment. In Separtation-Encounter-Return one quote really stuck out like a sore thumb. Richard Rohr said, "For the man to be born, the boy must die" (5). I think i must have read that small sentence at least seven times. Children live such carefree lives and have such open minds. However, you must give that all up to become a true man. I'm not sure if I'm willing to grow up. I don't want my inner child to die. I guess no one ever wants that to happen, but it will eventually. Sometimes you don't even realize that the boy in you is really gone. Still being a child has a downsides. I have absolutely no idea what I want to do with my life. Maybe the child needs to die down in me so I can find some answers. I'm not so positive that I want to leave the all the fun stuff behind.

On the optimisitic side, once I get to where i want to be, I can find the kid within me again to share with my own children.

The story Separation--encounter--return I did not really like. So I will talk about the structure of the essay instead of its content. I really like the way the author uses three words that have a cause and effect on each other. The title for example. The words inter are connected to each other. Another example would be in paragraph 1 were he says, "Life will be death, failure, and absurdity, which can lead to renewal, joy, and beauty." I think it catches the readers attention to keep going and fine more of these connected words.

Well of course I would pick this reading to blog about because I am Asian and it is written by an Asian character, so just put two and two together...haha =p

Anyways onto my analysis of the reading. I love ancient Chinese philosophy, especially how this reading is about Taoism. It does not really define what it is, but it is basically your own interpretation of which I think is the fundamental or true nature of the world through your own experiences and setting them free with your mind.

Experiences such as naturalness, vitality, peace, refinement, detachment, anger, receptiveness, spontaneity, ways of speaking and guiding behavior. What it wants for you to do is to be free from all these experiences and just be left with the "art of the mind", maintaining the life-spirit of your inner-self.

As stated in paragraph 4, "For Tao fills our whole frames, yet man cannot keep track of it. It goes, yet has not departed. It comes, yet it is there in the mind. It is dim and dark, showing no outward from, yet in a great stream, it flowed into us at out birth."

Meaning whether we can or cannot see, hear, or feel Tao, it will always remain a unity amongst all.

I am probably talking out of my rear end about this reading, but I am just trying to think outside the box if I am not mistakenly doing so...

Seperation-Encounter

It is not about religion, but about patterns. Patterns that shape a man. Patterns that can be interpreted in anyway, and still have the same conclusion of good or evil result. The two births reflect everything that has happened in this world. Their must be good to have evil and vice versa. The pattern can occur to a man, an era, and history. Bush to War, and now we Have Obama. Drugs to to rock bottom only then to become man or a victim of man. If you interpret everything in Separation Encounter as an analogy and insert names, figures, and events that happen in histories time it will all come together. Then it gets more specific as in heroes. A hero is built by his struggles and his enemies.(Can really relate to that) What he does with his wisdom and presence of influence can be good or evil. You don't just go out one day seeking to do good and become a hero. It falls into your hands with out you expecting. It is how you handle the situation determines if you come out a hero or just a survivor. It is not about you, but yet about the essence that you chose to follow. All in all to have good their must be evil. From religion, to evolution, and what science can provide us it has been shown time to time. Their must be war to have peace. Life to have death. Light to have dark. Heaven to have hell. Hot and Cold. Bush to have Obama. Religion, Evolution, and Science should not waged upon each other. They are all different interpretations of this natural occurrence of pattern. Personal belief, and human nature disrupt the peace between this general pattern. But with out this disruption we will not move forward as a whole as shown by history.

Mr. Hsiao. I'll see you Thursday. This show tomorrow is all voluntary for the Salvation Amry which is holding a veterans day BBQ and recreation function for military veterans at the Los Alamitos Naval Base. Separation-Encounter-Return reminds me of heroes of popular fiction. Batman, Spider-man, Superman, and luke skywalker all were in the back of my head when i was reading this story. This is like a outline of those heroes journeys and struggles."Invariably, there is a friend,a "god-father",a biography,a saint,a mythical image which aids, encourages, and gives strength and direction to the would-be hero. This is alfred to batman and obi-one to luke skywalker.

Nam, Good luck to you and your comrades at Los Alamitos Naval Base: Had you given me more advance notice, perhaps, we would have joined you.

It sounds like a very worthy cause to celebrate this country and those that served earnestly with their lives, so we could enjoy the freedoms we take so very casually.

This question will be beneficial to all, so I thought I would post it for everyone or anyone asking questions about the Research Proposal:

*******************************************

I have some questions regarding the proposal that is due Wednesday. It states the proposal should contain the topic chosen for research, and should be tilted as such. What does should be tilted as such mean?

***************** Motivation for research?

***************** Does that mean my personal motivation?

***************** Potential sources to use? Does that mean

***************** Where I am going to look for my research?

My answer to all those questions is

Yes.

John Hsiao said...

If I left it at that, it would be a disservice, and my class, as Kevin and Nam have both successfully, adeptly, illustrated is that I want for everyone is to push deeper and longer into ideas to extend them and draw out the very essence of the Truth.

Nick Sember said another "Deep one" from Mr. H.

Yes, I concur.

So here is my real response to the above questions:

I am glad that you are reading deeper into the instructions for the Proposal:

Yes, do give me the motivation in terms of why you want to write this paper although you and I already know why but state it for me anyway?

Tilted more so means that you need to look into where you will skew/direct the research?

Where do you see yourself pushing the topic and its constitutent parts:

Which organizational part are you going to pick?

Obviously the topic is a given, but in terms of setting up the organization contra/opposition, cause and effect, compare/contrast, how are you going go go about it.

Which organization?

Yes, where are you going to look for the research?

Do you have ideas or have you started looking already?

I didnt really undeerstand the story. I Think it was talking about how When we are young we dont really understand the outside world, and as we get older and start to understand things, its like we are reborn again. we become mature and become focused. Orlando,

A person picking oranges, if s/he is content, satisfied and not wanting of more, but finds enjoyment/fascination with the shape/color/roundness/size of oranges, then, they are content, i.e. the state of contentment.

However, to be happy, one has to be pleased or glad over one specific thing, which in my mind brings materialism or objects because of this society and inundated with by media and such.

I do not know about you Orlando, and I mean this congenially, really, but I often marvel at those who find contentment in the little things and are happy with these little profundities rather than look at the big big illusionary place holders like status/power/ and even ironically I should say this because I hold this position, authority.

Does that make sense?

I have had conversations with friends about returning to my own garden, as a gardener and working on my fruit trees and tending to my KOI because it brings me little contentments/joy that I could never possibly get working as a Professor.

Most of my work does not get its fruition over the course of the semester or even after.

Notice, I am not saying that these two positions: gardener and Professor are not mutually exclusive, in terms of joys, but if one is blessed with tending the small things, nurturing a garden for instance, is that not a blessing rather than aiming for the upper echelons of fame and power.

These are just points of departure: I just know I miss my garden, and I will return to it when the semester is done.

So, in a round about way I am saying that contentment is fine and happiness if great if it is rooted in one's own curiousness of the world, and it can be in the smallest of things.

That is also the basis for Taoism and _The_Way_and_Its_Power
and even to a certain extent
_Separation_Encounter_Return_

Agree to disagree of course, and talk to me about it if you choose either here or in class.

Remember, this post is in response to Orlando's, and I do not want to start another tete-a-tete with anyone except Orlando.

If you are interested, do weigh in, but do not do so if you want to start another testosterone-charged debate.

philosophy is always kind of hard for me to comprehend for the 1st time i read it, but i get the hang of it after reading it a couple times. the main idea of this excerpt was the guidelines to living a free spirited life. in our life we are encountered with things and ideas such as, grief, joy, delight, anger, desire, and greed for gain. according to paragraph 4, if we put all these away , our mind/heart will be cleansed & restored to its full purity. Tao is the way of the vital spirit. thus, it fills us with well-being of unity and without it, we would just be individuals.

monster,
apologies for the tiff. im sure you, like i, harbor no hatred, so thank you. I read your post about thanking the veterans. i just want to bounce my thoughts around and see what you think. All current military personnell are voluntarily enlisted. there are multiple benefits and incentives for doing so, as we all know. Why dont we thank teachers for their service? why dont we thank municipal workers? is it because servicepeople risk their lives? this is true, but i believe teachers/doctors/garbagemen GIVE their lives. to their profession. Dont get me wrong i believe the military is an important asset and it takes a lot of bravery. but it is someones personal choice. Perhaps i know too many personal stories about people using the military as a 'way out'. Then they take advantage of veteran status and the gratitude of americans. Again, this isnt a one-size-fits-all label im throwing down. im a little torn on my stance.

To be completely honest i didnt understand the story Separation-Encounter-Return. I've read it a couple of time n i still dont understand, maybe is because im sick and cant realy consentrate or maybe im just not smart enough for it. i dont know. the story talk about wat a hero is, and wat a hero does that makes him a hero. the author talks about a rebirth or enlightment that that particular individual has, that then changes the path he takes which will then leads him into becoming a hero.

Yeah, this story was a tough one. You definitely have to read it more than once to ge the story. I have been reading a couple of the blogs and what Brittany had said was, I think, a really great quote to have a better understanding of the story. It was "For a man to be born, a boy must die." Everyone has to grow up sometime. All the carefree and no worry life that one was use too, is now gone. We are left to grow up and be adults. Follow rules in society and look up to our role model, or I may say hereos. Those hereos can be anyone that someone looks up to, a figure I may say. Whether its with religion or not, a hero can be within anyone.

I had a hard time focusing on this writing because im still in a lot of pain, but what I read, and understood, was a little disturbing for me.

This passage is pointing out opposites between a religious hero, and a real and/or fictional hero. I.e. Death, failure and absurdity is seen as renewal, joy, and beauty to a Catholic/Christian. It also talks about how we can easily live for ourselves and by ourselves, but we fail, and surrender to being followers, and end up needing a guide and leader. Example.... Jesus.

That's what I got from it.

Agreed.

And we do so, silently. Yes they are the unsung heroes of society, yes we don't give them as much credit as we ought to.
I'm niot clear on what your message is, so if I'm not on the ball please correct me. What you're saying is that everyone, in a way, is giving their life in order to achieve something good for everybody? If so, I agree. We all do our fair share of hard work in order to create progress. Our soldiers are the fence to our factory, and WE are the machines, the oil, the nuts and bolts that make this factory run.

I dont know if im out of it or what? but both of the writtings are so hard to undersatnd. The main things I understood from The Way and Its Power is not to be influenced by the things around you. I guess what Lao Tzu is saying is that you are born with clean slate and as you go through life everything changes it. He talks about the mind and how we cant controll it. I know my explanation is not organized, but the writting is so hard to explain.
I hope we talk about it in class.

After reading Seperation-Encounter-Return for the third time, I was finally able to notice the deeper meanings it has. I am agnostic and choose not to have a certain religion; Richard Rohr seems to be summing up the christian beliefs and showing his viewpoints on it. My favorite line would have to be when the author states, "There is no alternative, no way to understand, than to go on the whole journey ourselves". I agree with this statement; it's similar to the stories you hear from friends and at the end they say something such as, "it was a lot funnier if you were there". If I want to figure something out, I'll learn it and take what I could call and "educational journey".

Although, I still rest my case as to when I said that this story is basically a summary of the bible, in the author's point of view.

See you soon Mr. Hsiao

Homework: Seperation-Encounter-Return

What I got out of this story is that we are all born into this world whith the option of doing something great with our lives or letting time pass us by. It is up to us to decide what path to follow. We can choose to listen to those "callings" that we receive and give into them completely in order to reveal our true potential. We can all have the capacity to become heroes in many different ways. Choosing to become a hero means taking all of the hardships that come along with that choice. There is always work to be done, and there will always be someone around you to try to take you down.

I find it funny that in seperation - encounter that the author hints towards Jesus being a hero by saying that it is not enought to just die at the cross. But earlier in the story he says that a hero shows no self-pity or hopelessness. Yet Jesus himself before he was punished cried out to his father asking why he had to die, showing self pity. So the two statements in the story actualy contradict eachother. just my 2 cents.

Hey everyone...haven't been on in a while. Had to get away on another adventure.

It's terrible I come back to thrashing, bashing and slashing on the blog. Realistically we're the cherries in the fire. We all give off light but nothing is forever. Lets just contribute and stop trying to put one another out.

Heres another chapter in my book:

Its been years since I've been on the east coast. But last weekend I showed it some love. New York as always makes you feel so small. Confusing. Amazing. Hypnotizing. That city puts in retrospect what we do and don't have. I walked the quite streets very early in the morning just to be ambushed by the cities bees by dawn. Everyone had their destination...except me. My feet took me to the bones of the fallin' towers. The sight bottle necked my emotion. Couldn't swallow nor could I initiate a sigh. An overdose of emotion if you will. It puts perspective on what america is all about. What we stand for...its so shameful that we easily forget why we're here. Catastrophic events shouldn't have to pry the nails out of our souls to open up to others. No love. Now the foundation is being rebuilt and/repaired. NY has been glorified by its rich multi billion dollar corporations, but what about the workers to the bee hive? They are not much different. Everyone is shoulder deep...everyone has a story.

Behind the scenes or "between the lines" there is a whole new consept to the city. Down in the caves of NY the walls and rails are unclean. What once was treasure now was static trash in the lair of the subway. The silver bullets shuttle tough crowds. Eye contact is dangerous and not advised. Keep to yourself, and you'll be in the clear. As you stare and judge...you are not alone. There were many hungry homeless who I'd seen. Many talked to themselves, others held up signs. One walked up trying to sell poems...it was hard to say no.

Connecticut was my other stop. Beautiful. The fall leaves were mother natures blanket. She [mother nature] is a master of exterior decortator. The trees stood as naked statues waiting for the spring months to arrive. The houses/buildings were made out of bricks, to fight against weather. I made a stop at Sacred Heart University (SHU) with a friend. A very nice school I must say. Something to apprecaite was the fact there wasn't any graffitti or etching in the desks. Regardless at the fact its a university and we go to community college...respecting property doesn't matter of location. Maybe think for a second before you put that piece of gum on the walls or under the desk. Obviously I'm attacking students other then those in Professor Hsiao's classes...just something to singe in the back of our minds.

Traveling, as always is a great experience. Leaving home to bring a new one back...sometimes its what we must do in order to keep our own sanity. 3000 miles away and 37000 feet in the sky...I realized something. No matter rain or cloudy days...above it all the sun will continue to shine. Keep spirits high in the gloomiest of days. Be kind to one another because you won't get out of this life alive.

It is, in a way, an odd thing to honor those who died in defense of our country, in defense of us, in wars far away. The imagination plays a trick. We see these soldiers in our mind as old and wise. We see them as something like the Founding Fathers, grave and gray haired. But most of them were boys when they died, and they gave up two lives–the one they were living and the one they would have lived. When they died, they gave up their chance to be husbands and fathers and grandfathers. They gave up their chance to be revered old men. They gave up everything for our country, for us. And all we can do is remember.

I feel that Richard Roher is trying to get across to the readers is that a person has to choose there own path. The path in which a person will follow in order to have a good life. A person cannot count on anothers person's ways of life. Separation-Encounter-Return by Richard Rohr, stated, "And that, in a word, is why true spirtual teachers like Jesus are always amrginalized, dismissed, killed, or worst of all, worshipped. Then, we can admire tham at a safe distance, like a pious icon, but cleverly ignore their message and their actual journey"(11). Meaning that a person can still look up to them a higher being, but not to follow the journey that they took in life. Use them as an example and go your own way.

In Separation Encounter Return the author talks a lot about heroes. He says that they do not become one by themselves. There is always an experienced elder, or someone of that nature, to guide them. It is not something that they believe already, but something that they learn to do. They have to put their ego out of the way and give themselves to something/someone greater. It has to be something that is more important than his own life. At the end he says that a real hero always knows how to go back home.

I for one can honestly say i did not understand a whit. I am the kinda guy that is into fantasy reading and such about background stories, these kinds of literature that go on and on about a persons ideas make me sad :( ANYWAY. onto teh assignment at hand. I personally disagree with the quote "There are no loners among the great heroes." You look up most heroes and you will find out that they actually are, that is the reason they were pushed to become heroes, or even VILLAINS in the first place. As an avid player of video games and the stories behind them most of the RPG's main focus is on the so called non-existant "loner hero." They find something wrong with the world, nobodies seems to want to do anything themself so the hero strives to fix it. End of story in my opinion.

Separation- Encounter- Return by Richard Rohr:

This piece explains alot of truths about life. We, in and of ourselves, focus on ideas and objects that we really shouldn't. I find alot of similarities with this composition and Sparation Anxiety from Alain de Botton. They both go on to say that their is a greater meaning in life, and people are too caught up in petty ideas of what makes a hero. People, observed by both authors, are too worried about what the content of your pocketbook is as opposed to what time type of life they lead. Stripping away the "Sins" or "Status Symbols" is the only way we will be able to find our true selves. This also reminds me of a song that I really liked in JR High School from Avenged Sevenfold, named Bat Country, which goes something like...

""He who makes a beast out of himself,
gets rid of the pain of being a man".

Caught here in a fiery blaze, won't lose my will to stay.
I tried to drive all through the night,
the heat stroke ridden weather, the barren empty sights.
No oasis here to see, the sand is singing deathless words to me.

Can't you help me as I'm startin' to burn (all alone).
Too many doses and I'm starting to get an attraction.
My confidence is leaving me on my own (all alone).
No one can save me and you know I don't want the attention.

As I adjust to my new sights the rarely tired lights
will take me to new heights.
My hand is on the trigger, I'm ready to ignite.
Tomorrow might not make it but everything's all right.
Mental fiction follows me; show me what it's like to be set free.

Can't you help me as I'm startin' to burn (all alone).
Too many doses and I'm starting to get an attraction.
My confidence is leaving me on my own (all alone).
No one can save me and you know I don't want the attention.

So sorry you're not here
I've been sane too long my vision's so unclear.
Now take a trip with me
but don't be surprised when things aren't what they seem.

Caught here in a fiery blaze, won't lose my will to stay.
These eyes won't see the same, after I've lived today.

Sometimes I don't know why we'd rather live than die,
we look up towards the sky for answers to our lives.
We may get some solutions but most just pass us by,
don't want your absolution 'cause I can't make it right.

I'll make a beast out of myself, gets rid of all the pain of being a man.

I've known it from the start
all these good ideas will tear your brain apart.
Scared but you can follow me
I'm too weird to live but much too rare to die."

For some reason, I was listening to this song while I read the passage. About half way the song, something clicked in my mind. The song talks about being shown the light, and experiencing the breakdown after looking upon it. The chrous also draws a direct line to what Richard Rohr calls a, "protective figure." Avenged Sevenfold is asking the listener to become the protective figure. Later in the song it sings about the deterioration of the person, and I tie this to Richards explaination of what happens to a person without the figure. Implosion happens to the person trying to achieve and become the hero when he does not have this figure. I believe these all to be truths, and would like to read further into the story "Wild man to Wise man"

Separation-Encounter-Return

We are all on a journey towards wisdom, trying to figure out our true meaning in life. Everyone has their own trials and tribulations, and that is what shapes us and gives us wisdom. One must hit rock bottom to find strength one did not know they had. In Separation-Encounter-Return it states, “Life will be death, failure, and absurdity, which can lead to renewal, joy, and beauty.” Richard also points out, “For the man to be born, the boy must die.” This means that everyone has to hit a low point to reach their goal.
It’s so easy to get caught up in worldly things, and our sense of meaning and truth become blurred. Richard based this short story around Christianity. He Explains, when one feels at a loss, the one we can always count on and turn to is God.

I felt as though this author was speaking to me. He talked about the journey that we all face in our lives. It the journey that makes us who we are. Throught my whole life I have wondered about my meaning. I have felt empty for so long because i do not know my meaning in life and feel as though i have accomplished nothing. The quote in paragraph six explaines the way i been feeling fully, "When a man cannot do greatness in some real sense, is life has no universal significance or transcendent meaning. He is disconnect from the 'love that moves the sun and other starts,' as Dante said. In that sense, his life is a disaster, literally, not figuratively 'disconnected from the stars'."

I have read both of the readings to many times to keep count and all those times i read i still am i little unsure about what i read. so here goes...in separation-encounter-return i understood richard's difference of heros. How heroes use to be and now what we think heroes are. For instances in paragraph 6 richard states that "Feathering one's own nest has become so acceptable that we largely subsitute celebrities for heroes. now one is a hero if one makes a million dollars, and a fool if one gives it away." This is one of the passages that stood out to me the most because it is so true. Most of our heroes today are just people who make money and most people do not know why they call that person a hero. What happened to all the people that make a difference in our world why cant anyone look up to them for a change? In the way of its power what i got from the story was that in life in general we need to have a balance of peace. being able to have that peace is be free of anger, dispear, and burden thoughts. this is a path that i have been trying to find and i admire those who can find that balance in their own life.

What this reading from Richard Rohr is trying to say is that everyone needs a hero, but it does not have to be a superhero. Every hero will recieve something for finishing this quest that they are trying to accomplish. These hero's are not greedy and take these gifts for themselves, they give out to the community because they want good to come out of it. He is saying that many of us are not following these examples anymore and are keeping things to ourselves. We as people do not know what to do with this kind of responsibility so keeping it for ourselves is what we think is the right thing to do.

In the way and its power by Lao Tzu, it reminded me of a kung fu or karate movie. In how the master always says find the inner strength, and let your body and mind be one then you would find a higher sate of power. To be more specific it reminded me of that movie Berry Bordy's Last Dragon. It also relates to me in the same way of when you clear your mind to be ready for a test or when your playing a sport. You throw everything your thinking out and focus on that moment.

My mother has recently stated to me that she thinks that my age bracket has been brainwashed by liberal teachers in their respective school environments and are just parroting these, "Liberals," when we say that we don't think gay marriage would be such a bad thing. I am not a gay, or overly liberal man. I am however, I hope, open minded. We are all a product of our environments, and I've been raised in an environment where I was taught being gay wasn't so bad. I was also raised in an environment that stated that nobody should be denied any civil liberties. I believe marriage is a liberty, a freedom, we should allow all people to partake in. I don't care if your gay and want to get married. Far be it for me to say that you shouldn't marry someone you love. That is just the environment i was raised. In a related topic, i go to my own Grandmother on my mom's side. In her opinion, it is morally repugnant to gave interracial marriage. Now, I know most everyone on this blog thinks that interracial marriage is just fine (including myself), but again, it's all about the environment. You do ultimately make up your own mind, but your environment makes it so that you are influenced in one way or another. My mother (along with many others) were raised in a world where being gay was social deviant. And even though that is still true today, it is much more widley excepted than any other time in the United States' history. And so, being a product of my environment, not just off of the say so of one or two college professors, I am for gay marriage.

Peter: My Rock, My Hero

As I read “Separation—Encounter—Return”, a memory of an old, recent flame (ha, I hate that term; it’s lame, but whatever) was brought to mind. “The journey continues often with a protective figure. Invariably, there is a friend, a “god father”, a biography, a saint, a mythical image which aids, encourages, and gives strength and direction to the would-be hero. The journey never happens alone.”(4)—his name is Peter. (Coincidentally, the same name as my dad.)
There I was more than one year ago, absolutely miserable and at my rope’s end as a sophomore at UC Davis. I met Peter; we happened to go to the same high school, but never talked before. He was 24 years old and a college senior, I was a precocious, but still curious sophomore. He was a troubled mind, but a compassionate soul, and on top of it all, a Pastor’s son. I was leading a life of debauchery: unprotected sex, copious amounts of alcohol, sleeping pills, insomnia, red bulls, monsters, marijuana, etc. I was majorly depressed, and I was ready to give up and die.
I wouldn’t eat or sleep for days, but Peter would stay in my room and study while I tried to fall asleep, and he also brought burgers, pizza and burritos which he forced me to eat. I couldn’t understand it, his actions—“it is a decision, not an obligation”, he’d always say. “Alright, if you say so,” I’d reply back. He even proposed to me, and that just made me infuriated. His passion and intensity was too much for me at the time, and I thought he was being selfish—I thought proposing meant he was looking out for his own interest, and not mine. I also thought his attraction towards me was borderline-obsession, but I was just in denial of my own feelings for him. My close girlfriends approved of him completely, but I kept trying to find ways to push him further away. I was a coward.
The threshold experience: Peter is probably one of the most rock-solid human beings I will ever meet in my entire life, and for that, I am truly grateful to have met someone like him, let alone know him inside out. I’m always going to think he deserves someone better than me, and I stand by it to this day. My “system of logic, meaning, success, and truth” (5) did, indeed, break down, namely because of Peter. His character was very didactic, and it came naturally to him. He taught me life lessons inadvertently, which is the best way that I, and most, can learn: through example.
I burned holes in his wallet, wasted his gas, lost him a lot of sleep, gave him headaches, held him back one year in college because he didn’t study when we dated, and ultimately, I broke his heart. I occasionally degrade myself for committing such things, but I am reminded that “there is no room for pettiness or petulance or self-pity” (7).
The Rebirth: Believe it or not, as ridiculous as this may sound, I met Jesus Christ in my room the night I took 5 pills of Tylenol and 5 shots of vodka. I was about to die, I could feel the cold chill of death over me. Then, Jesus appeared, stretched out his arms, and told me to go back home and start over. (a psychiatrist would call this a “manic hallucination”. I, along with my priests and pastors call this an encounter, a miracle.) Thus, I was born again.
The return: If not for Peter, I would not have returned back home to Southern California, “the hero invariable returns home, back to his community.”(9)
Because of my immense, ineffable gratitude, I am doing all that I can to show how thankful I am—giving back to my family, my community, my high school, my friends, my school, etc. all for God’s glory.
I don’t regret the relationship I had with Peter, and I do know that our relationship was not a mistake. Through him, I learned the meaning of love, sacrifice, and humility. At the end of the journey I met Jesus, and embarked on a new journey with my new hero.
You may call it “poetic nonsense” (10), but I call it Truth.

After readinSeparation- Encounter- Return by Richard Rohr explains alot of truths about life. He talks about how we focus on ideas and objects that we really shouldn't. We have become a materialistic society that only cares about achievments rather than the type of life we have been living. Only clasifying our does and donts.instead of appreciating what actually takes to live a life full of happiness.

Separation-Encounter-Return
By Richard Rohr

I believe that the story is trying to tell the reader to be yourself. Do not let yourself be a follower by not taking the initiative to become the leader of your own crusade. There are examples out there of those who chose to lead their own way. Now, we must do the same and lead our own life story through to the other end of the book. We have confused the true meaning of a hero, as well. Everyone now-a-days searches within a television to find a celebrity to define as a hero. "Quite simply, a hero is one who gives his life to something bigger than himself. He goes for something and is not just along or the ride, but that something must be larger than his own life" (6). You are not a hero if you make a million dollars. Real heros do not take their gift at the end of their journey for private possession. It should always be for the community and the common good.

"There is not alternative, no other way to understand, than to go on the whole journey ourselves." (11)

mmmmmm Hello everyone!

I think both The Way and its Power and Separation Encounter are really hard readings. I believe Separation Encounter is about the path everyone has to walk to become wiser. I think the author is saying that nothing and no one is perfect overnight or by themselves. Everything and everyone around them influences them. The second reading, mmm,I think its talking about the Taoist philosophy?I really didnt get it :(

I believe this story is showcasing the similarities between Christian faith and great novels. Maybe I read it this way because I'm an Atheist. In paragraph 7, "It is not enough to kill the dragon, save the maiden....The real hero's task is to keep love, to find humor, to maintain freedom..." I disagree with the author because in these stories for the Hero it IS enough to kill the dragon to save take maiden. In a good story a hero will do this while finding humor, discovering joy, and maintaining freedom only because it is a good story. I also think it is ironic for the author who is preaching Christianity is comparing it to stories.

The fact that a believer is happier than a septic is no more to the point than the fact that a drunken man is happier than a sober one. The happiness of credulity is a cheap and dangerous quality. - George Bernard Shaw

I can relate alot to what Richard Rohr said in this story. What I got was that every person makes their own outcome in life, their own path. I like reading these kinds of writings because sometimes I feel like being with the people that I did not follow. I feel alone in this path that I am taking but I when I read something like this it helps me to stay motivated and keep going.

I was raised in a household that had strong religious beliefs. I definatly don't take my religion to the extremes of fearing god. In Separation-encounter-return i think it is sending a message that there should be somewhat of a fear in order to make sure that the beliefs are followed correctly. there shouldnt be a fear in a person's god. if anything it should be a comfort factor.

just my insight though...

Danielle, Mr H,

I agree that you don’t have to make a lot of money in order to be happy. That being said, I have a hard time believing that someone can be truly happy with having that type of job. Being an animal trainer, a firefighter, or a personal trainer are all jobs that people do for the love and for the money. However, picking fruit is not one of those kinds of jobs.

I would like to use myself as an example. I am able to provide a comfortable living for my family. However I am not happy and want more for my family. I am not happy with that. There are still goals that I have to accomplish before I can be happy. At this point, I can be content where I am in life. But I do want my family to be in a safe neighborhood, I want my daughters to go the best schools, and I want my wife to be able to quit her job. Until I accomplish these things I will only be content, not happy!

This is why I have a hard time understanding how someone could be content in life. Do we want to be content with our spouse or happy? Try telling your significant other that you are content with them, see how they respond.

I want the best for my family and will not be happy till I achieve that goal. It doesn’t mean money, it means a better life.

Thoughts?

Isaias,

Sounds like you were disrespected. Try and remember that you have a beautiful girl and this will not be the last time that a guy will disrespect you over her. Next time, let her handle it. She is strong enough and smart enough to handle the idiots herself. Over the years I have learned a few things about women, here are some tips.

1. Women are turned off my jealousy. They don’t want to feel like property. They want to be part of the relationship not your possession.
2. They like confident guys. That means that they don’t want to worry about how their man is going to act when they go out.
3. They want to know that you can protect them if needed, but don’t want the drama of people fighting over her.

I had the same thing happen to me years ago. I just sat back and let the guys try and pick up on my girl. All the while sitting on the side and looking at their faces when she told them that she was with me. At that point, it was more embarrassing for them to get SHOT DOWN than it was for me to let them try and hit on my girl. Plus, you have a good girl. No matter what they would have done to try to get at her, she would not have given them any play.

I guess what I’m trying to say is; be confident in the fact that she chose to be with you. That should be enough. Who cares about the guys that will try to hit on her. Let them try, and let them get shot down. It’ll make you a better man. That I can promise.

Homework:

_Separation_Encounter_Return_

The simple dynamics of every novel, or published movie follow these boundaries. Take for example: Lord of the Rings, The Gladiator, The Patriarch, even Superbad. They all had little battles. Winning and losing throughout. Doubt was the plains before the plateau. There the "hero" made his own choice finding inner strength to peak. So we "religiously" go to church, temple, what ever it might be. Antsy to get out, we watch the clock. Finally it lets out and the stampede to the parking lot becomes a Olympic sport all of a sudden. Pulling out of the complex some one cuts you off...you throw them the bird and say a couple precisely chosen words... In church minutes before were you not just learning about love and treating others with respect? "Love thy neighbor"? We read it because we feel OBLIGATED to read or watch it...but we never really implement the true lesson. Like Richard Rohr says at the very end, "There is no alternative, no other way to understand, than to go on the whole journey ourselves." Sometimes we just have to wait for that life altering experience to motivate us. Once and only then will the epiphany, striking down like lightning, will it open "new" eyes to the world.

Hello Tim,

I would prefer it to be one of the service learning topics that we have done for field trips out in the community:

i.e. Homelessness

i.e. Racisim/ Prejudice/ Discrimination

i.e. Materialism

i.e. Poverty

i.e. Teenage Pregnancy... any of the Great Debate Topics we have discussed and you all have debated thus far. . .

pertains here.

I would *prefer* these topics, but I am opening up the field for you to choose almost any topic within reason.

Some students have chosen

Cosmetic surgery as a new form of materialism.

Designer Drugs: the new trend of drugs

Cigarette Smoking as addiction

Alcoholism and its effects on Family, Self, and Friends

Drunk Driving pertaining to its effects on the abuser, victims, and families

Bulimia, anorexia nervosa, and other eating disorders once prevalent in women have male victims

It is as wide and as deep as you want to range and explore.

I am opening up the field.

You may run it by me, but most likely, I am turning in for the evening. I will respond in kind tomorrow obviously.

There are so many more topics out there. . .

My heart is in service learning/ social justice as a preference though not as a must.

Does that make sense?

I've read many of your posts and you're usually the one answering questions that other people ask, so it's somehow in my head nice to see that you've got questions to ask, too.

Anyways, I've probably brought this up too many times before, but I think the difference between happiness and contentment is the balance.

I think that in order to achieve happiness, one must first understand suffering. If one encounters happiness first, then that person will later have to suffer. However, I think that with contentment, there is no counterside to it.

It's just like when you play the Game of Life, the best strategy is to choose the $80,000 salary because if you choose anything higher, there's a high risk of someone taking it away from you.

Now, it's more difficult to just be content with things, because it's not the best. We're always striving for the best, for more. However, I think it is stable than happiness. On the other side, for some people, the suffering is well-worth it for the happiness that will come along, yes?

This is my take on it. Well, this is what I came up with at the end of my thinking session. I went in a circle again in my head. It happens when I think too much, and this subject definitely got me thinking a lot.

Nick/nizzle
I was wondering where you were in the midst of the argument/discussion between the 3 reps from the schools!

Wow, it was so great reading about your trip. It sounds so fun. Well, I can relate to what you are saying about New York, because I grew up in Tokyo. As a little kid getting off the subway, I was always afraid that I'd lose my mom. Yeah, everyone is always so busy.

It's like they have this fire chasing them. The fire could be the fear of being unemployed. I mean, the school systems there are getting kids prepared so that they can get out there and do exactly the same thing that the adults are doing.

Connecticut, on the other hand, sound like a beautiful place. I would love to go there one day. Oh, and you write about these places almost as beautiful as they actually are. It's definitely a talent.

"She [mother nature] is a master of exterior decortator."

just amazing.

Finally, your entire post reminded me of the concluding thought that de Botton made in _Status_Anxiety_:

A fine remedy for our anxieties over our low status in society may be to travel-whether literally or figuratively, by viewing works of art-through the gigantic spaces of the world.

Last week after the elections were held and proposition 8 passed, a group of over 2,500 protesters stormed the Los Angeles temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day-Saints. Two squads of LAPD officers in riot gear set up along the inside perimeter while SWAT team members followed the mob as they swarmed the temple. Several protesters attempted to climb over the protective fence that surrounds the temple grounds which are considered sacred to the LDS community. The following is one woman's response to the attack:

Ah, the lessons we learn about ourselves when we are in pain. Hundreds of thousands of "no on 8-ers" are puzzled and hurting, struck by what they perceive as a resounding slap. In utter sincerity, they ask, "Where is the harm in it?" They cannot see the pitfalls, and because they can't, they shrink in revulsion and swallow the proffered lie that a "yes on 8" vote means a "no" vote for gays as people. Their painful question resounds: "Where's the harm?"

Yet less than 48 hours since Proposition 8 passed in California, the answers to that plaintive question begin to emerge. A people who've longed to be seen as harmless and peaceable came forth en masse and disturbed the peace of those who also voted from their hearts, just as passionately, and with just the same desire to promote right. With the first angrily-scrawled picket sign, ugly seeds were strewn; and they're quickly taking root.

Heedless of the needs of innocent drivers and their schedules and worries, people swarmed into the street, effectively proclaiming, "My needs trump yours". That was a small selfishness, but it was a beginning. It grew. Police resources were siphoned away from averting existing dangers, and who can catalog the pain that ensued when cries for help went unanswered, or when help was delayed?

Some protestors marched on the short access road to private property: a holy place for millions, some of whom chose to vote no on 8. The crowd spat. They profaned. They shouted and raged, but no matter, because the people they bullied disagree with them. And so it became acceptable to mock and malign.

They came back the next day, emboldened and angry, although there had been no retaliation, no rebuttal in kind. (In fact, the opposing campaign was markedly void of contention, derision, or hate.) Shrieking and hurling obscenities, even making a mockery of things sacred to others, they flung their vitriol at peaceable people who spoke no ugliness but who simply stood up for their beliefs and voted their consciences.

Watching the news, we could quickly see the harm; and nothing in their behavior demonstrated anything else but the intent to force into our lives their "rights', even if those rights infringe on children's rights to innocence, parents' rights to teach the things they embrace as sacred, or workers' rights to refuse to perform actions and speak words that are in violation of their beliefs. It speaks volumes when someone, even in rage and pain, is capable of viciousness, of force. In the moment that they turned their anger into active, undulating hatred, their true colors emerged. If within hours of an election people use brute force and intimidation to further their agenda, then what else will they do? What else will they demand? Who else will they terrorize into compliance? The forecast is tragedy.

If people are so quick to denigrate, deride, and blame an entire ethnicity that was but a tiny part of a vote, then what hypocrisy! The insistence on silencing those of opposing views borders on fascism. I stand stunned, because this mob mentality is in stark contrast to the gentleness I thought I'd felt from the gay community. So, to those who sincerely ask, "Where's the harm?" I answer sadly, "It's in the headlines".

This is a layout for a considered Research Proposal:

Quick Question.. I was wondering if my topic would be acceptable. I was going to write on the Holocaust. I was going to do the Issue (why the Jews were blamed-- bankers -- ww1) then solutions (concentration camps, the night of the broken glass, the ban of books, star of david on doors, ect.) then the call to action/truth would be about the americans finding the camps and seeing all the men and also what happened to the nazi's (put on trial and then death) and how hitler killed himself on April 30 1945.

Is this acceptable?

*:•-:¦:-•:**:•-:¦:-•:**

This is my response:

(This might be offputting to the person who wrote me this e-mail, but I believe that it is important as a learning experience for all)

Yes, that is a good start, and the only caveat that I would explore is shifting everything over to the left:

Issue: Holocaust--concentration camps--as a result of prejudice/discrimination/racism

Solutions: Nuremberg Trial

Truth: What can we learn from this tragedy and how not to repeat it?

Step everything to the left and it steps up your voice especially in the last paragraph.

*:•-:¦:-•:**:•-:¦:-•:**

Look to the organization and this person picks the difficulty level of 9 organization wise.

Also, this topic is so broad that it will probably not fit in the confines of 5/6 pages, but in the spaces of 10 or more.

Difficult topic to be sure

Separation--Encounter--Return

I was initially skeptical about where the words were going, but i ended up completely agreeing with the message. This passage connected with me on an immensely personal level. The way Rohr places belief separately from "learning to do". I could write a paper just on that. Also Rohr highlights the individuals who live not with sin, but still within sin(those who dont cuss, drink, or run around, in his words). The last line: "there is no alternative, no other way to understand, than to go on the whole journey ourselves." i agree. It is exceedingly difficult to learn from another's mistake. We can all hear about how hard the road is, but when we truely walk it, we finally feel how hard it is for ourselves.

Ahh!! Was up with filmmaker now in days? They cannot come up with something original, so they have to get old films. I don’t mined if they remake a movie because ether it suck or just suck, but when they trial to remake a B-movies that is a different story. I am a big fan of B-movies; I love my black and white horror films. So to see that they are remaking The Day The Earth Stood Still is like a joke to me. I seen the preview and I look “ok” but they cannot compare to the original. The original was way better. I believe horrors B-movies are way better then the new horror movies. But the funning part is that in the end I am going to go see it, just to see how good it is.lol

Picking a topic to write about is so frustrating, i am having such a hard time deciding what to write about. I am thinking that i should write about the long and short term effects after a child has been molested, or raped. The thing is that there is so much to choose from.

Everybody’s free to wear sunscreen by Baz Luhrmann was really good i really enjoyed reading it. My fav part was "enjoy the power and beauty of your youth; oh nevermind. You will not understand the power and beauty of your youth until they've faded." and its so true we never know what we have until we don’t have it anymore, we always think that something is wrong with our appearance, or what ever it is. but everyone is beautiful in there own way and youth in its self is beauty.

Solopan,
I owe you an apology. Im not sure where the ire in my prior dealings came from but i would, as monster said, like to bury the hatchet. I think i disagree with you so much because i actually value what you have to say and find things of substance to disagree with. So i thank you for your contributions and apologize once more.

Also, a couple pages back on your posts about humanity being a cancer. i think youve got it right. when i re-looked at it, i agree we are a cancer, but i also think we have the potential to move away from being a cancer on the earth.

Jovana,
I re-read your post about prop 8, and have also been doing a lot of thinking. I wish i could go back and vote no on 8, because of the fine print involved. For instance, i didnt take into account its retro-active nature. So many already same sex married couples effectively got slapped in the face with a forced nullification and i can hardly imagine the pain and grief that caused. It wasnt right. And lately ive been valuing personal freedom more and more. Id have to agree with you that love has many definitions. I apologize if i came off as rough or hostile. I only wish i could say these things in person, because my tone and speech would reassure that i mean not to attack.

Tim,
Good post on the protests, but im not sure i agree. ill leave it at that.

Monster,
I agree with you. Materialism in essence is disgusting. But on an economic standpoint, a lot of folks owe their livlihood to peoples eagerness to purchase new, and purchase now. Still, i wish the bar of happiness were lowered to more essential and less material posessions. I also want to clear up that when i used the word 'idiots' it was in an example. i hope you dont think i would honestly say that.

Thank you. It's always great to visit. Your quote from Status Anxiety is perfect.

Coming back to an online brawl is a little interesting. Maybe more of a informal debate. Personal attacks, gorilla warfare tatics, alliances, seems like the begining to a digital World War 3. And Yet we really have no concept nor reason for it.

Is it easier to pick out flaws or blemishes in the rose. A sharp thorn perhaps or a undeveloped pedal are quickly noticed rather then the goodness it brings...joy to its gardener, pollen to its visitors, and realistate for its roots are easily over looked by us pessimists.

As students we should listen to what "educators" (basically anyone) have to say before interrupting. Form conclusions later rather then before the story is done. The answers come to those that wait patiently and are kind....

I think at this point we're all a bullet without a target. Lets focus our aim on world problems rather then have a midwest showdown on the forums or in the class room.

So the stock market is having a tough week. DOW is down under 8400. A drop of about 250 points. Students...save your pennies and spread the word. Prepare yourself for more lay offs, and remember this happened in the 30's and 80's. Everything will bouce back after a couple years. What takes more time, to climb the mountain or sled down it?...

I am not 100% sure if we went to the same high school. i went to Norwalk High.

Mr. H

I was and am honored to be in your class. you are a great teacher. You are pretty funny, no Ron White but good enouph. I thank you for everything you did for me, for the class, and everyone.
( i am not trying to kiss up to a professer. i am just saying)

To all

In these days we live in, filled with fear, hate, war, and pain. there is one thing that keeps all going. it is the love we have from all we care for. mat it be your mom, sister, brother, dad, friend, BF,GF, or 2nd uncle twise removed. who ever it is. love keeps everything going. The Beetles said "all you need is love". well, going threw what i am now, and i know a few of you are going threw the same or worse, just remember, i love every one of you like a friend. And will be here if you need me.

may you all have a blessed life, a great Thanksgiving, and a happy Holiday season.

Brandon,
Thanks for stepping it up. You are absolutly right about how deep thoughts sink in over time. Little seeds they are, they grow and inspire new thoughts/feelings/emotions or whatever the case may be.

Jovanna,
Today Conecticut issued its first marriage license after their proposition 8 went into law. Since it didn't pass in CA I'm sure the efforts might be targeted to not calling it "marriage" but something else which eventually will allow it here in Cali.

I guess over time the definition of marriage has been bent. I'm sure Websters one day will have it listed as: The act of two inexperienced people who don't know what they are doing nor can comprehend being with the significant other for the rest of their lives. SOME people are explicitly unprepared for that type of dedication. Who knows, but I hope people start really apprecating what they have.

Keep the spirits high. The sun always shines, even if you can't see it.

ok this homework was
1.)Global Warming Q&A,
2.)read sunscreen by Baz Lurhman
3.)One Page Proposal in MLA format
4.) Take home grammar quiz.

ok so number 3 and 4 i believe you cant possibly do at this persise moment but ill explain them to you anyway. =]

the proposal is about the final research paper that we will be writing for Mr. H. it has to be 6 pages long.
so this is what it is...
write a one page proposal for your research topic. it should contain the topic you chose for your research and that is the title. it must also contain a decription of the topic, the motivation for your research and the potential sources to use it. it must be well-written, grammatically correct, and be one page long. its basically a plan. and if you do do this make sure you have a second topic just incase the first one is voided by Mr. H =]

the other thing the grammar quiz, i can probably scan for you here at work and email it to you. then all you have to do is print it and work on it. let me know k =] i hope i helped.

Nizzle:
I think that was hilarious. hahaha websters is going to have a definition saying: The act of two inexperienced people who don't know what they are doing nor can comprehend being with the significant other for the rest of their lives. hahaha you're so funny. =]

I'm not sure how many of you are actually thinking about going on to English 110 with Mr. Hsiao (GWC), but I hope that there are enough of you doing so, because I would love to be in class with all of you again.

The difficulty of the work that's involved might turn more people off from the class, but I think this class teaches people to love writing because they can write about what they love. I'm giving you a good grade on ratemyprofessors.com, Mr. Hsiao. haha

By the way, I just checked for you on ratemyprofessors.com because when I checked before I was in your class, there wasn't anything there, and there are some interesting comments. You should read them, even though you "don't take compliments well". I know what you mean, I'm also Asian. :P

Zach
Like Jovana said, your life isn't pathetic and your posts definitely aren't a waste of time. I'm sorry about what happened to your friend, it seemed like she was a great person, I think she will miss you just as much as you miss her. But yes, also like Jovana said, she is in a better place. I know that she will be protecting you, because you loved her, and I know for sure that she loved you, too. That kind of friendship doesn't just end, it's forever. It will bring you two together again, in one form or another.

Just look forward and live life to the fullest for yourself and for her, and I know she will be very happy. :]

Also, I just wanted to tell you that you've came a long way since your first blog posts. I mean, many people were offended and whatever, but your posts have become more and more readable and personal. I really, really encourage that, because people could relate. When people could relate, they'll be ready to encourage you and are more ready to talk to you. :]

Jovana
Yay! Congrats to them! I know that your feelings go out to them because of your beliefs. I'm happy for them, and I'm also happy for you. It lets you know that there are some who share your beliefs and there are places where people with different sexual preferences are treated equally.

I know that we've both come to a different conclusion about prop 8 after hearing both sides, but it's definitely just nice to hear those kind of news, yes? :]

Brandon
You know, it's always great to hear the other side that you present, so I definitely don't want you to be discouraged to do that anymore. But I also know that you come across very strong and perhaps a little offensive. There are ways to disagree with people while agreeing with them. It's an art form, really, but it's worth learning, especially with a mind like yours.

Like that one time in class, where Mr. Hsiao slipped up, I think many have learned that the presentation of your ideas is just as important as the information you're presenting.

Learn to be tactful, yeah? Because it'll be easier for people to relate and listen to what you have to say.

It's awesome that you're taking responsibility and are apologizing, too. It's really nice to recognize something you did and own up to it. It's the greatest and responsible thing you can do, and I know that people are going to respect you more for that, too.

Nick
I think that Jovana would agree that you should write a book! Haha

And we should get credits in the front of the book because we've encouraged you to write it ;]

Hehe. Kidding about the second part, but you definitely should write a book!!

Mr. Hsiao can even use it for his class! Wow, what a plan!

Why?

Because I've decided to finish this class with flying colours. I'm choosing the highest level of difficulty for this essay so I'm gonna focus completely on this essay. I'm very excited about it, I have a couple options as in what my topic will be. What my collage is going to look like and what my poems will be about. Plus winter is coming up so in a way I'm hibernating early haha. :D. I'm taking a break from the blog since we're on peace time and evertine is fine.

Brandon and Isaias; I really think our classes exagerated a little, I believe we weren't fighting, we were just hmmm having a very heated yet healthy debate. Its been a pleasure sharing theories, opinions and facts.

Yes, we are all colleagues indeed.

AYO MAN I FIND THAT THE REASON LOVE IS DIFFERENT NOW THAN IT WAS IT OUR PARENTS DAY IS THAT PEOPLE DONT HAVE THE SAME BELIFES THAT WERE ONCE USED TO BUILD A RELATIONSHIP. PEOPLE ARENT AS PATIENT AS THEY WERE, MEN ARENT ACT LIKE MEN, A REAL MAN ADMITS HES WRONG AND MOST YOUNG MEN ARE TOO DAMN PIG-HEADED TO TRY AND WORK THINGS OUT. ALSO THE MORAL DECAY OF SOCIETY HAS CAUSED MORE PEOPLE TO CHEAT, CHEATING THE NORM AND THOSE THAT HAVENT CHEATED ARE LIKE UNICORNS, DAMN NEAR IMPOSSIBLE TO FIND. I LOOK AT WHAT OUR GENERATION HAS BECOME AND I'M SADDENED. THERE WILL BE NO GREAT LOVE STORIES FOR OUR GENERATIONS, JUS A BUNCH OF STDS. THE YOUTH OF TODAY DONT WANNA KNOW EACHOTHER THEY WANNA KNOW EACHOTHERS BODIES. THAT IS WHY THERE IS NO LASTING LOVE IN OUR SOCIETY TODAY. ITS RARE THAT A GOOD MAN AND A GOOD WOMEN CAN FIND EACHOTHER...

I enjoy reading your posts, so it's a shame that you won't be coming back here for your input.
But I'm sure you'll be back, you'll miss it... I know it :D haha

Anthony
I agree with everything that Amador has said. I think that everyone in general held their religious beliefs and morals very close back then, and that was why love was love. Now, people can only know each other for a day, be in a "relationship," and tell each other that they "love" them. A week later? They're no longer together.

Back then, people married a lot younger. However, the marriage lasted longer than the ones that do now. They might have married without loving each other, but they didn't dare break the promise that they had made to each other and to God. Nowadays, if things aren't going well, divorce is easily a choice. People even recommend it.

No patience, definitely. The theme of our generation is 'instant gratification,' and we aim for that all the time. But look at where it's gotten us. The price that we are paying for, is it worth it?

People's priorities and morals are all over the place, if even in any place. I think that's why love is different now. I couldn't agree with Amador more.

Mr. Hsiao!
When are we going to have that party? I've been wanting to bake some cookies for my fellow classmates for a loooong time!! haha

Jovana,
Yeah. I got owned. Haha your to fast for me. :)

Possible ideas for my project are:
• Methamphetamines (Personal experience where an ex. gf got into it)
• The World Trade center/ 9/11 (Since I was just there)
• Neurological/Psychological effects on children from family influences.
• Sexual Addiction (history/Reasons/effects/repercussions)
• International Gun Launderers/laundering

Not sure yet...so many options...

What will you be writing about? Anyone else willing to share what they are going to write about? I'm sure it might help others who are having a tough time thinking of different topics: Groups/events/places etc.

Yue,
As always you are inspiring...maybe I'll start with children's picture books lol...you know the ones with the pop-outs? :) Maybe the professor could be the editor.

A goal: one day I'll be able to pour my ingredients into the pot. Stir vigorously for hours/days/weeks/months. Let it cool for 30 minutes and feed the 5 senses we posses something like never before.

I would like to hear some of your "too many" stories regarding individuals joining the armed forces simply as a "way out". I would like to speak to these individuals of such high stature and ask them "why the hell did you break the law in the first place to be put in such a predicament?"

Nevertheless, a veteran is a veteran and you should respect that regardless whether they knew what they were getting into, or volunteered, or were "forced" to join. The government benefits those individuals with with the balls to stand up for freedom and preserve it, IE Veterans Affairs. You can rest assured that a majority of veterans will utilize that status, including myself.

Veterans Day is a day that I hold close to my heart, because until you've seen your friend die because of another person's agenda... you can run your mouth off all day long about who should be thanked for their jobs. While you're out thanking the garbage man and the newspaper boy or your colon hydro therapist... people are risking their asses for your freedom of speech. What I am trying to say is... just because you have the freedom to say what you want, doesn't mean you always should.

Don't be fooled. I don't want your thanks. I did what I did for my personal beliefs and to be part of a legacy. While you can say all day long "I knew what I was getting into", you don't know what you're getting into until that first round snaps off the wall next to your head.

I challenge you to do something great... Not toss around meaningless banter, but perhaps risk everything not knowing what the outcome might be.

If you want to argue about something I said (which I am sure you will)... I'll be at class early on Monday. School me.

Mr. Hsiao, sorry for beating a dead horse...

Proposal

“The Effort to Save Trestles”

Trestles, one of California’s premier surf breaks, is under attack from the state which it calls home. The State of California is proposing the extension of the 241 toll road, which currently runs from Yorba Linda to Coto De Caza, would extend the 241 toll road from Coto De Caza to the San Onofre State Beach. Not only would the toll road extension be detrimental to the few wilderness areas left in Orange County, but it would also devastate habitat surrounding Trestles. As part of all free way construction, heavy equipment is used. Heavy equipment will destroy the dense brush area directly inland from trestles and affect the erosion patterns coming from San Mateo Creek. For nearly 15 years, the Transportation Corridors Agencies (TCA) has been attempting to complete the 241 toll road. During those 15 years environmentalists as well as the Surfrider Foundation (joined with other organizations) have taken the TCA to court to fight the extension of the 241 toll road. The issue at hand has worked its way through the city hearings all the way up to California Coastal Commission. The battle for the 241 toll road extension has been raging for several years now with heated demonstrations and passion filled debates. The two main sides of the argument are the workers for the toll road and the few commuters that would use the toll road and the environmentally conscious persons and organizations who wish to preserve one of the most historical and best surf spots in the world. I want to write my paper on this topic because I feel that I will be more educated on the topic so that I can make a well informed decision on what side I wish to choose.

or perhaps those individuals did not break the law... maybe they have other issues.

Post ??

So I posted I did not like Seperation--Encounter--Return but I never explained why. Here is why I did not like.

1. In paragraph one it says, "faith for Christians is not a credal statement as much as a Christ-revealed, but also discernible pattern. It is not so much something you believe, as something you learn to do." I highly disagree with that. I am a Christian and according to this guy I dont believe, but that i learned , I just follow. I do believe i was never forced to learn.

2. Towards the end of paragraph one he says, "The pattern is everywhere, but we just dont want to surrender to it. we need a model and guide." In this part he is saying the everything has this patterned and that Jesus is not the only one. Well the issue with this is that Jesus is the only one and the reason why it is in every book or story he reads is because Jesus was the first one to set this pattern and everyone is trying to copy so its not like this pattern was there before Jesus. I do believe we all need a guide a model other wise we would be lost and have nothing to follow.

3. In the second paragraph the author generalizes everyone that tries not to sin and makes them look like the bad people and he makes sin not something bad. Yes I understand that that there are people maybe that are like that, but they at least are doing something for the guilt they feel for SINNING. What the author seems to be missing is the fact that no one is perfect, but at least these people are trying even though it is impossible for a human being to do it by himself but anything is possible with God.

4. Finally what I dont like about the essay in an overall basis is that the author puts Jesus in with Odysseus and other characters of mythology as if Jesus was the same. He makes Jesus seem just like another story and that just does not go with my beliefs. He makes the Bible just another book of stories just like mythology. I dislike that about the essay very much.

Chris,
First, thank you for serving our crountry. Many of you go unappreciated for the heart ache, burrden and weight of America resting on your shoulders. Not everyone can bear such a task. For that you are inspiring and thanked. But I must say, please be patient with those who have not seen what you cannot forget. I would not call it ignorance just a measure of experience. Was joining the armed forces exactly how you imagined it years prior? No matter what the media veils to its followers we can never recreate your every moment. Thus not being able to FULLY understand your mentality. Please share your story of influence and paint pictures in our minds. Forgive what we're told not what we've tried. When you signed those papers you secretly signed something many people will never understand or even attempt. But please do not forget...true greatness is undefined. Words cannot disect, promote or publish greatness. Its a feeling beneath all layers of self recognition. Its all around us: doctors, service men, educators...even garbage men. We've all been told "the path", but by walking "the path" we're lead on different explorations.

Ambush tatics may not always work on the human mind. Don't corner it, as that leaves it clamed up and unwilling to accept different ideas. Instead, draw it out...tiny bits at a time.

Isaias,

Brandon and Gabriel have taken the low ground, and you must do so as well.

Do so in however you feel you must, but you may not take the high ground here.

There are no victors or winners here, and just as you said before in a long long ago post, "No escapes. . ."

I wanted to point out that emphasis, and your humility is shown in class, but not here where it needs to be shown.

Does that make sense?

No more fighting. . .

Anyone. . .

Chris,

Thank you for your comments: I was waiting for you to come out and voice what you and I have talked about many a time.

However, again the message is a bit harsh, we will leave it as it is because you have earned all that you have to say.

Let us take it easy on the last month--we are reaching the finish line and in store for us is the Truth. . .

Good work all

Its a marathon. The last mile to go. Our lungs as stretched balloons, grow weaker. It feels like we're "choking on glass" and the bass to our beat has our heart over flowing. Do we give up? We've gone this far. Our quarrels, heated arguments, are all contrabutions that have feed our strengths putting aside our weaknesses. It's a last "hurah!" before we depart from the gates...make it count.

proposal

My topic has changed during class, so I am writing a new proposal. My topic is going to be about prison gangs. I am going to distinguish the different types of gangs in a prison. Then explain why an individual has to join a gang once they are incarcerated. The reason I chose this topic because it is intresting. I have friends who has, or still are in the "joint", and they happen to be one of the most interesting people I know, with many fascinating prison stories. I plan on using them for my research as well as reliable websites. I also plan on using articles and books.

Thank you!! you are awesome too. like YOU ROCK!! he he love you man.

Why are our parents love different than the love from today. i think this has alot to do with the way people have changed. evolved if you will. if you watch movies from back in the day, or even hear stories you'll hear nothing like now.
Now-a-days a girl falls so hard that they loose respect for themselves and their life revolves around the guy they are dating.
Bak-in-the-days guys did anything possible to be with the girl they wanted. they where romantic and when they fell for a girl, they werent afraid to show it.
now guys have to look and act "tough". so i believe that is why our parents love is true pure and forever.

i dont want this class to end. i want to keep going to Mr. H's class and i hope im able to. and i hope we dont have to stop blogging after we leave the class. i promise ill be on topic Mr. H. just teach us online lol hahahaha
